Having fun is a big motivator, for sure. I think understanding shapes and form go a long way in understanding anatomy faster, too and seeing your shape language and designs evolve is definitely proof of that.
Totally agree! Incorporating shapes into my forms have been really helping me exaggerate the human body in the spots i want more precisely! Thanks for watching man✊🏽💯
I hate drawing, everything about it. It makes me feel horrible when i sit there and work on something i dont like. But i really want to get better, thank you.
you’ll get better man, it just takes time. I remember feeling similar at certain points in my art journey, there’ll be days where you love it, and days where you hate it. keep up the work though, drawing is a skill that is very worth it in the long run!
Remember this quote, “The man who loves walking will walk further than the man who loves the destination.” Have fun don’t just do it because it pays well or comes with bragging rights. Take your time.
I feel like if someone first learns basic shapes in 3D space by breaking down work they like as grid and then practicing it with tubes and then cubes of any angle and a 360 turnaround both vertically and horizontally and get these stuff down, then anatomy should come to them a lot easier since they will already be able to understand and depict any sort of shape in 3D space
Definitely true and really good advice. I guess you could say thinking in shapes and 3d would be the pre-requisite to this video lol.😅thanks for sharing.
Yeah, doom scrolling and spending a lot of time on absorbing pointless information really fills up my brain so I've been trying to avoid it. It's like my brain gets full on junk food and refuses to eat it's "vegetables". Even if I manage to start trying to practice (or chew), it barely even helps cause I can't really absorb it (or swallow it I guess). Thanks for the tips and it's nice to see someone farther down the line showing off their progress.
Thanks!! And good analogy for that. Yeah I've been there too. Two years ago I completely left socials to focus on art and real life and it was the best decision I made for myself. It definitely is worth considering if doom scrolling becomes a serious problem. Helped a ton with focus for me. Thanks for sharing🙌🏽
Wow! You have really developed your skills in such a small time frame! You managed to say so much in such a small video in a simple yet eloquent way! You would make a great tutor!
I was definitely doing that art grind at the start of this year, kept it strong but when I hit the 3rd month I started feeling burnt out. About halfway through March I started slacking because it felt more like a chore than something I was excited to do, now hitting April I'm feeling that itch ~ that desire to start drawing again come back! I think I might have been focusing on my drawing too much, to the point where I was depriving myself of other things I liked doing - kind of like being on a diet and being too strict yeno? I think going forward I need to find a way to make my daily drawing more fun and less like a grind, or else I'll keep getting this burnout feeling.

if you haven’t done so already, I really recommend using life references to help with that. I struggled with drawing 2 people interacting with each other for the longest time but it’s a little easier now after studying for a bit🙂
Ay that's a lot of massive improvement in just thirteen weeks, it's godly seeing you incorporate the shadows along with the anatomy as well Not many people mention it but overthinking can also kill the fluidity of the art, would you say that letting go of "trying to get it right" helped improve your process drastically?
Oh yeah for sure! I think perfection holds a lot of artists back. Instead of trying to render one perfect torso, time is better spent drawing 10 lesser torsos. You end up understanding ALOT more quicker. You hit the nail on the head though. Thanks for commenting and preciate the words bro🤙🏽💯
Take the rest, you'll thank yourself later🙌🏽I sympathize with you though, wanting to draw and not being able to is the WORST. Hope you get better soon🤙🏽💙
who/what specifically did you study to get to a point where you could really grasp anatomy? awesome video btw, this was super helpful genuinely. anatomy is something ive been trying to understand for years and it just never clicked as someone who grew up drawing animals. preciate this video gang
Thanks for watching! I looked a lot at Burne Hogarthe 'Dynamic Anatomy', it really helped break down the forms of the muscle groups for me which in turn helped inform what I know about anatomy. I look at ALOT of photos for reference(especially ones with definition in the muscles) to understand how everything looks too. Hope this helps!
ok tomorrow I will start learning anatomy because for now after burning out I only draw portraits, anime characters e.g. pokemons and some other random things
Do you have any recommendations on when you should begin learning anatomy? I've been trying to learn figure drawing, gesture, anatomy, clothing, coloring, and shading/lighting/rendering, but there's so much to learn and it can be a bit overwhelming at times.
I suggest focusing on JUST one of those topics rather than all of them at once. Gesture/figure drawing is really important for the energy of drawing so that's a good starting place imo. That's what I did😁 Hope this helps🤙🏽💯
This is some rad stuff, you're lowkey an inspiration man! As someone who draws via mouse (as I do pixel art stuff mostly), I've been wanting to start using a recently bought tablet but I have a hard time adjusting to it, what sorta tips would you give me to make me more comfortable using the tablet instead of the mouse?? I was also thinking of just ditching training on my drawings digitally all together and just do it via pencil, but I fear that most of the muscle memory won't be useful when I want to do digital art again.
First off, thank you so much for watching dude! Really appreciate it! Secondly, that's awesome you got a digital tablet to do some art on! I'd say for me, it was just a matter of making it a habit to do something small on the tablet everyday or every other day. It helps break yourself in to using it gradually, and before you know it, you'll be spending hours on it! Lastly, I absolutely support working traditionally! I kind of think the practice is a little more authentic that way. And your skills will absolutely translate going from traditional to digital. The same goes for digital back to traditional, however the feeling is not as natural for a lot of folks(at least that I know). Hope this helps!
@@ChrisMason_01 Right on! Thanks a lot for the reply, will keep this in mind. Hey, tbh, it's really just Pinterest ATM. There's a lot of timed figure drawing sessions on youtube if you search for them as well! Those are great for warming up. Hope this helps🤙🏽
@@ChrisMason_01 I've been practicing for about 3-4 weeks, and I spent around like 5-6 months of me just drawing things, and I'd say I got some tomato applesauce of an improvements skill
thank you for making these tips realistic and applicable! every time i try to pick up drawing anatomy again, i give up quickly. any tips for just pushing through, even if the art is ugly?
Of course, when I really don't like how something looks, I try to take a break from drawing for practice and either draw something I enjoy, or pause on drawing altogether for awhile until I can look at the piece again with a fresh set of eyes. I think pushing through can sometimes lead to burnout. Thanks for watching and hope this helps!
Yeah thats a good thing to do too. Sometimes it can be easy turning off our brains while practicing with references. Always good to remain intentional with how we practice. Thanks for the comment!
Do you think practicing specific body parts each day for five days, and then drawing a full piece that combines everything I've learned over the past few days on the last two days of the week, is a good idea to improve within a year? I feel a bit awkward about where to begin on my journey, lol. Your tips were helpful; thank you🤍🤍!
Cool video. Do you have a set schedule when you do draw and practice? Like practicing a certain body part for an hour and then drawing a project for 2 hours? Also how long would you go on, let's say hands, before moving onto feet? A week, 2 weeks, a month?
Thanks!! It highly depends! I try to hit a minimum of 30 minutes on purely figure drawing studies, daily. For individual studies on specific body parts ill maybe focus on one for about a week and then ease back into the figure drawing studies. I usually find something that I don't feel confident in drawing correctly and try to tackle that next.
A lot of the art advice I see on here is not for me and it’s a pattern. Everything in this video is what I learned already but I’m desperate on finding a person I can relate to
Either references, or I create lines of action and usually my hand starts to move on its own. But if figuring that part out is hard, I say mainly do gesture studies until your brain is comfortable freestyling it! Hope this helps a little bit :)
Shape language kinda came with gesture and figure drawing sessions for me. After doing those for awhile, it gets easier to incorporate. Sorry that this is a little vague. I'm gonna see if I can word it better in an upcoming video!
Digital art takes a bit to get used to. When I first started out It took me a while to get the hang of it. Drawing with a pencil and sketchbook is always the optimal way to study though(imo at least) so either way, I think you'll be okay!😁
Lol opposite for me, digital with all the editing tools make it easier. Making mistakes on paper is like losing on an arcade game with limited tokens/credits.
Improvement is slow and sometimes takes awhile to see results! Sometimes it also helps to change up your strategy for learning too. For me, I stayed pretty stagnant in my art for awhile because I didn't take the time to study. But after studying this year for the first time SERIOUSLY, I saw massive improvements fast! There's so many things I could say/list but if you enjoy art, you'll eventually improve, and how fast you improve may depend on how you decide to learn. Wish you the best on your art journey :D
currently, im able to draw anatomically correct stick figures, yno. Boxes for body, thighs, head. sticks for arms, and legs, yno. Im starting to be able to put the figures in perspective. Once Im good with that, should I move on to gesture drawings?
yeah the way your going is great, definitely keep breaking down the forms as you’ve been doing! I think incorporating small gesture sessions into that will help with your progression also. Short answer: Yes you should move on to gesture drawings if you have a pretty solid foundation with basic primitives in perspective.
Hello! Question, what would you think would be the best refrences to use to help improve drawing? Ik pintrest is a big one but, would there be any other options?
Hey quick question, what type of brush do you use for sketching? Because I’m trying to find one that suits me, and I’m having trouble doing that. I like the brush you’re using however, so I wanted to give it a try.
it depends! the ‘technical pen’ was one I used for a long time but I’ve been trying various creator brushes for a bit now! I’m currently starting to create my own brushes and hopefully I’ll be able to share them with everyone soon
These tips are to vague to help for me. ( The compare to your self. Is really helpful. But its hard to do that when looking up for tutorials.) These tips are easier said then done. So these tips aren't really that helpful in my opinion.
super fair! yeah it’s hard to make tips that can specifically apply to everyone’s situation perfectly😂hopefully there are other tutorials out there that you find more helpful! thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching and hope this helps!
thank you this is so helpful!!!
now i just have to actually get off my lazy bum and draw lol
Hahah! I'm glad you got some value out of this video! Happy drawing :D
good stuff
Thanks for watching!!!😁🤙🏽
@@ChrisMason_01 np man, u got some great advice
1:29 feet pics
My only tip is that don't draw and copy blindly always try to understand things.. understanding them will help memorize body parts.
Yeah thats a good thing to do too. Sometimes it can be easy turning off our brains while practicing with references. Always good to remain intentional with how we practice. Thanks for the comment!
@@ChrisMason_01 Agreed. Also no prob
That could definitely be effective especially since you're building on top of your previous practice sessions!
so im not the only person that after i try antomy and do dencent i add a woah face at the bottom corner
Haha! Yeah I always like to doodle the little mascot in somewhere loll
Yes.
😎🤙🏽
A lot of the art advice I see on here is not for me and it’s a pattern. Everything in this video is what I learned already but I’m desperate on finding a person I can relate to
what are some good referances
Prokos website for figure drawing, and figure drawing reference sessions on RUclips for gesture🙌🏽😎
Nice 😊
one tip: turn down the volume on ur intro
Heard😅🤦🏽♂️i got u next video💯
(that ACTUALLY work) caught my eyes lol
🤣🤣🤣lol nice!
Does anyone have any website that could help understand muscles
How do you think of poses to draw?
Either references, or I create lines of action and usually my hand starts to move on its own. But if figuring that part out is hard, I say mainly do gesture studies until your brain is comfortable freestyling it! Hope this helps a little bit :)
Did you do any exercises to that help with shape language? I struggle with this
Shape language kinda came with gesture and figure drawing sessions for me. After doing those for awhile, it gets easier to incorporate. Sorry that this is a little vague. I'm gonna see if I can word it better in an upcoming video!
Why do I feel like I suck at digital art. is it because I'm more comfortable with pencil?
Digital art takes a bit to get used to. When I first started out It took me a while to get the hang of it. Drawing with a pencil and sketchbook is always the optimal way to study though(imo at least) so either way, I think you'll be okay!😁
@@ChrisMason_01 thx🤧🥰
Lol opposite for me, digital with all the editing tools make it easier. Making mistakes on paper is like losing on an arcade game with limited tokens/credits.
@@coritooty🤣That's a good analogy lol. I guess it does depend on how limited your supplies are
Same I also overthink it though
cool video :-D
Thank you🥹✊🏽💙
@@ChrisMason_01 ❤❤
I have been drawing for 2 years and i stimm havent improved:(
Improvement is slow and sometimes takes awhile to see results!
BINGBAN
YEAHHH😃😃😃
currently, im able to draw anatomically correct stick figures, yno.
@@ChrisMason_01 alrighty, Thanks!
Hello! Question, what would you think would be the best refrences to use to help improve drawing? Ik pintrest is a big one but, would there be any other options?
I strongly recommend ‘lineofaction’ gesture/figure drawing. in terms of general art resources, I reference proko’s channel a bunch for art excersises!
@@ChrisMason_01 ok! Thank you! 😁
When I started learning perspective
I realised how much my anatomy sucked ;-;
Same here lol, it get's better with practice though! :D
Chris i don't if you'll see this but what do you first start on learning anatomy or what method to use to draw anatomy boxes? Or cylinders?
I like cylinders for limbs and spheres for the torso and hips :) Thanks for the comment!
What sources / classes are you using?
Burne Hogarthe - Dynamic Anatomy, Proko Figure drawing timer and Pinterest references😄
btw is starting with shapes a good idea?
Yeah if you're focusing on understanding the forms then shapes are a GREAT place to start!
Where are you learning from?
Burne Hogarthe - Dynamic Anatomy
Marc Brunet and Proko tutorials!🤙🏽💯
Jo Jo fans:👀
😂😂😂
interestingly, these tips aren't just applicable to anatomy. you can pretty much use these tips to pretty much draw anything
Actually yeah!😅I didn't realize it applies broadly as well haha. Thanks for sharing🙌🏽
1 min in already frustrated is it normal?
great vid... but you made a foot with a thumb... im scarred
my fault😭🤣
Do they work tho?
For me; definitely!
You're welcome. I appreciate it
