A few months ago, a beloved choir student in my school committed suicide. It was asked of the other choir students to, if they had time, sing this song at her funeral. I chose to sing there, even though I didn’t really know the girl. Just looking out in the group at the dozens of visitors, friends and family of the girl alike, while singing this song brought me to tears. It was the hardest performance I’ve ever done. God bless that girl’s family and her spirit.
My high school performed this song at the end of every graduation ceremony. I had the privilege to sing this three times and to this day I get teary eyed when I hear this song. It is so beautiful and this choir nailed it! May this song continue to be sung for generations to come. Well done, choir! God bless!
Mine too, this was always sang at the last choir concert of the year and it was always the last song sang. We’d also invite alumni in the crowd to come up and sing with us. It was amazing
My high school sings this as the closing song for every concert we hold. I love singing it every time. It just brings happiness to me and a smile on my face.
my first high school used to do this. a very small all girls school called connelly. it shut down during my sophomore year because of funding issues, but the place was truly magical. song brings back memories
I quite possibly might have your old choir director at our high school funny enough. He brought that tradition over to our school and it is my absolute favorite thing, but sadly every time I head it I am stuck in the light booth. He also did work at Franklin, moved schools this year.
As does mine! The only difference is that we sing this in C natural rather than C sharp, and we do not sing it at this slow a tempo. I love this wonderful song!
We used to sing this every Sunday when I was in church choir. I had been away from the church for several years, but my friend sent this to me on my wife's passing. I haven't directed or sang in church for more than 40 years. It's time to go back and perform this.
The Lutkin Benediction was the very first piece of music I heard Westminster Choir sing at the opening of school in 1959, and the very last piece I had the honor of singing, under the direction of Warren Martin, at my graduation at Princeton Chapel in 1967. I am SO proud of the talented musicians the college has produced and continues to produce. Thank you, Westminster Choir College and Westminster Choir. May your music live on for ever and ever. Robert T. Volbrecht '67
Rob Thomas, Class of 2001 here. Joseph Flummerfelt/J. Miller (in video). Same, first learned with James Jordan in Chapel Chiir my freshman year and then countless times afterward. Warren Martin though! Wow!
That’s Westminster Choir College, my alma mater. It’s the ‘school song’ or I guess Alma Mater and every single student knows it, voice major or not. Great care to show the lean, tall Westminster vowels, (think grayy-shussss for ‘gracious’), fast 90/10 consonants, and attention to blending and ensemble. Most important? Correct conducting gestures. Focus on Joe Miller. It’s imperative.
Always remember this performance. It's something you can be proud of the rest of your life. We had a choir director that taught us this when I was a kid 50 years ago. This made me remember those beautiful performances. Sniff. :)
my choir teacher teaches this song, we sing it at the end of every concert, in the winter one everyone sings it, in the spring, only seniors. he learned it when he was in HS\college.
There's something this song does to me.. Sang it with my nursery school choir about 24 years ago and it remains the best memory I have of that period when I think back. Whenever I listen to it till date, it still gives me same chills it did years ago.. When I get married, I'm hoping to teach this song to my wife and children so we could sing it together as a family..
Deondre J. Jackson I was a student there years ago. They worked us so hard to get the right kind of tone, diction, and freezing. It was an amazing experience to be under such great training and teaching.
A friend of mine from high school recently passed away, and our high school choir sang this song at our Graduation ceremonies. I still get goosebumps, especially when it is performed as beautifully as this.
We sing this in the auditorium while holding hands and pray right before dinner theater for everything to go right and that everyone has the best night ever ... ppl actually cry
I'm not religious but this has to be my most favorite song that we sung at chorus in school. It's so beautiful. This choir did it so amazingly. I can't help but hum along with the altos. When we performed this, a couple of us got teary eyed (myself included) and some in the audience were too. We weren't in the stands, though. We each had a battery powered candle, the lights were turned off, and we all made rounds in the audience while singing. We were just illuminated by the candles. It was very touching.
Westminster Choir College consistently produces magnificent singers who understand musical line. A very moving performance. My son did received his undergraduate degree at Westminster and I am very thankful because he learned so much. The faculty is superb and each voice teacher and choral conductor has a complete awareness of the human voice.
Nancy Jackson Sampson Agreed. I receive my masters degree there and I had such a marvelous, marvelous experience in training and musicianship. I’m forever grateful. Thanks be to God!
I absolutely love this version. Was blessed to sing it in my high school back in the 60's. My dad worked as a fund raiser/pr man for Westminster Choir College in the 80s. He loved working there.
My high school theater group sang this every time before a show and at the end of the production pulled the seniors into the center and it melts my heart to hear this because it brings back the emotions I felt being in the center for my last show and I miss it so much
This made me cry and sob. In Chapel at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas and large functions in the coliseum, we would sing this song. ACU is known fir this. These voices sound just like our large crowds which, of course, sang it A cappella. Such fond memories at ACU. Thank you for posting this perfect and beautiful video of this fine choir. I would love to hear them in person. Maybe some day.
We performed this on Christmas at our church god it was beautiful we turned off all the lights only having our candles to see in the clear night , wow its seriously all I could think at the moment
I'm sittin in the Lord's lap and being held and rocked so peacefully. I'm SO safe and LOVED. Thank you for the calm in my spirit and let me keep it from day to day! AMEN
Fountain Street Church, Grand Rapids, Michigan Choir Director, Dr. Beverly Howerton, a Graduate and former teacher at Westminster Choir College, closed every service for decades with this anthem. It still blesses me forty years later as I grow old and feeble. Amen!
When I toured Europe this summer with a band through a exchange program. At the end of every concert and every time we were leaving the town we would sing this song and it would usually bring us and the village people to tears.
sang this with the christian youth group, all great singers of course and that was the first time i realized the beauty there is in the world is really right there in front of you
My husband (boyfriend at the time) and I did this one in our high school choir 40 years ago...we still remember it....we would sometimes sing it impromptu to our choir director, whom we all loved dearly. Thank you for the wonderful memories, Dr. Walter J. Michels "Doc"....
Wonderful to hear this anthem soar once again, and a good reminder for us all that God remains in control, no matter what. Thank you. Lucille Reilly WCC class of 1974

We sang this at the close of every concert by the Acapella Choir of Spring Arbor College (now University). It brings back great memories. Thank you Professor Hubert Wash (RIP) for teaching us this wonderful piece of music. I can't resist singing along with the altos. I will never forget how this song moved me!
Was privileged to sing this in our public high school choir during the '84-'85 school year. I wonder if such religious music is permitted in public school today.
This song always brings tears to my eyes, because it brings up memories of an orchestra some of my friends are in. They end every concert with this song.
I love this Lutkins version of this prayer which I grew up with in England back in the 40's and 50's; The Rutter version is also very beautiful. The prayer itself is what carries the truth and beauty of either one. Lovely! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this. The church (which had a choir) which I grew up attending sang this every Sabbath. I haven’t heard it in decades. So good to hear it again! I loved it then & I love it now.
I'm so glad that I had the opportunity of learning this song just a few months ago at Meridian HS under the direction of Ms. Jenifer Davis. I sing the bass part and it brings me to tears every time we sing it. A truly amazing piece of music.
My high school choir sings this song at the end of every concert, but this past summer, we were asked to sing this song at the viewing of our late principal. Listening to this choir sing this song reminded me of that feeling toward this song and how beautiful it truly is.
I'm pretty sure we saying that in public high school Mr Dehogue had lots of Christian songs and they were beautiful. Just a note to the conductor, if you watch o God beyond all praising Susquehanna University and alumni you will notice that he makes them stand straight without moving their head or body like the military and it is really beautifully done.
Singing this song has become a tradition for my school and is so special to me and other choir students. I always get excited when my choir director tell us to get this song out, makes me tear up every time :’)
Beautifully done. I sang this at my Baccalaureate in High School and we did it at my home church. It was so impressive and so nice to hear this piece again after over 40 year. Ah, what great memories!
I learned this song back when I was in high school. It's the song we sang whenever someone in the choir lost a family member, or a friend. After the number of people who have passed away this year in 2020, whether it be from COVID-19 or something else, hearing this song made me cry. I personally have lost 3 people in my life so far this year, so hearing this made me remember them, how much I loved them, and how much they meant to me
Jakarta International School Choir under the direction of Ms. Lynn Thomas in the 80's. Used to perform at formal events specially graduation. Loved to be a part of the Choir
My high school, Collingswood High in NJ sang this arrangement at the end of every fall concert. It was brought to Collingswood by our Director at the time, the great Nelson Muschek. He brought it from his high school, Olney High in Philadelphia. One year after our concert we went to a restaurant for an after party. While there we sang the song again, and were joined by the manager of the restaurant, an amazing bass. After we were done, he allowed that he learned it at Olney High as well, and couldn’t help joining in. When I meet my end, there are two pieces I would like at my funeral, “How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place,” and this stirring number. Peter Lutkin was never better, and the voices of Westminster Choir College served him well.
God bless Mr. Woodrow Hill, JFK HS Chicago, Il. For teaching this to us and performing every year at the Graduation. When it was my turn I could barely finish. God Bless you Mr Hill, you are not forgotten!
I've been in that church, my sister went to Westminster choir college and I hung out with her when she was in school. I met all kinds of people and wanted to go there myself. But I was intimidated by how much student debt she was in afterwards. I never even applied. I miss hanging around there though. My choir director went there as well. She was a genius and I'm so grateful for everything she ever taught me in high school and my private lessons. What a beautiful version.

My grandpa recently died just before Christmas last year. He loved this song and we got to sing it for him one last time.
Your grandpa will hear it again and sung by a heavenly choir if he was a saved born again man Tim.
This has to be the best recording of this piece I've ever heard.
Check out the one that was performed at the Royal Wedding. My God...
Crystal Roland that’s a different arrangement but it’s still so beautiful
I definitely agree
check out Octarium's 2 on a part recording...
