He sang it live. There was only one cut where the camera went behind the chair, this was to move the mic onto his tie for the jacket removal, otherwise it was one take. The gun was a .45 but because of UK gun law he had to pass the loaded .45 mag. to an assistant and swap it for a 9mm mag so the gun wasn't live. The front lady string player got wet so they had to buy her a new bow after shooting. The 'rain part' had to be perfect first time as they didn't have a second suit for Ren to wear if they needed to re-take.

The white 'hoods' are actually money bags, the sort of bags that are used to move money around. We are inside the money bag and can't see outside of the bag and it is literally tied around our neck. However, we can remove the bag if we want to, we just need to try. To me, this is all representative of the money game that we are all playing, and that none of us can escape. All we can do, is be aware of the game.

If you spend your life seeking status, whether that's through money or political power, then you neglect the parts of life that truly hold meaning. Community, friendship, love. These are more important than anything money or power can give you. Our Society encourages us to seek wealth and power over these other things, and it's destroying us in all sorts of ways. Ultimately, this will destroy our civilisation if we don't change course.

Glad to see this one come up in my feed today :) . Just wanted to say that your genuine reactions and first impressions are fully appreciated, and they're a significant part of why I'm subscribed and watch for your videos. Ren does have a talent for rendering people speechless and/or emotional, and the quiet reflection at the end of his songs is an absolutely valid part of the reaction, and mirrors how many of us felt as well. Thanks for doing these guys, they're really well-received, certainly from my own perspective. 🙏

I was reminded of Plato’s Cave or the Matrix’s red pill. Ren’s fingers moving in a subtle but panicky way to remove the knot in the rope is one of my favorite details in the video.

great reaction both of you. something justin said near the end of your chat 'you feel bad for jimmy' ren said in his twitch stream after that that was the intention was by taking the story through his whole life you build an attachment to him to feel interested in what happens to him, which then brings the message of the monologue 'its an exaggerated version of me, and a version of him, and a version of she, and a version of YOU' that the character jimmy represents us all. the other thing i got was that the father figure could represent a family member but it could also be a representation of society. for me at least one of my earliest memories as a child was getting a pound left under the pillow from the 'tooth fairy' when my baby teeth fell out...a small but first step into that money game....
Love the fact you both have a decent discussion about the song after it (with some reactors its play it with 20 pauses throughout it and a 2min ending), the way you do it is great as we all know rens music can be a bit cryptic and different people will interpret things differently, so to hear both of your interpretations was cool i think. and sure after a couple more listens of it after this initial reaction those interpretations may well be different and thats just fine!

And I think Ren's message is Crystal Clear. Ambition and Passion Without Compassion Will Cause the World To Burn! But Ambition and Passion WITH Compassion Can Save It! I knew the piano was going to get his attention.. I think I said in a comment in one of the last Ren videos , I couldnt wait until he heard this song.. the piano in it is amazing. Mainly because it doesnt repeat itself , every transition leads to a different melody, tempo, that compliments the words of Ren. I would have a hard time wanting to figure out the notes and watch at the same time :D This is a video that needs to be watched many times.. one to just take it all in, one to see what he is doing, one to really get the full meaning of it, one to focus on the music and its progression.. Just one of those videos that has so much going on, its hard to get all of it in one setting.

There's nothing wrong with money... but if your sole pursuit is to accumulate it you'll never win. Even Ren admits he's part of the game but there needs to be a balance between getting/having what you need and hurting and stepping on others to get more than you need. My opinion, the hoods represent everyone as sheep (a herd) and how (like the piano player) everyone is replaceable. When Ren removes his and become the narrator he removes himself from the game. Thank you for doing this series. It's interesting to watch because you both focus on such different aspects of the music/performance.

  • @VideosbyLisaLisa

I love Ren's MG series sonically, but I *really* love how much conversation he provokes. So many details that *might* prompt interpretation. Like the first meaningful moment for me is when the narrator (seems to) takes the bag off his head and steps "out" of the money game to tell a story AND THEN looks into a mirror - which is what the narrator has repeatedly asked for since part 1: "But we like to point the blame, blame, blame, blame / it’s easier to blame / but point the mirror at ourselves / we’re all part of this old money game."
It's masterful storytelling how Ren plays the anonymous bard who, at times, interrupts the tale to give you a glimpse of himself. In The Tales trilogy, I think Ren did this by clearing his throat, breathing loud enough to be recorded, and most significantly by letting his annunciation of "London City, far from pretty / 2-0-0-5" get angrier and more resentful as Violet's Tale progresses. (The narrator even shakes himself as if to prepare himself before starting Violet's story just after rewinding time). In MG3, the bard gets so angry telling Jimmy's journey to corruption that he cuts the music to remind the listener that money is simply an invention that could be redefined if we educate children differently. Moreover, humanity's "fate could be the same without this story to the wise." Then he jumps back into Jimmy's story - cleverly mirroring the beginning with a twist (Ren did this in The Tales too). "Let me tell you a story about a boy named Jimmy, / One years old than his first words were my, my gimme, / Two years old, he was walking, three years old, walking quickly, / Four years old, he was running around the pavements of his city" becomes "Let me tell you a story about a boy named Jimmy, / He was 40 and he cursed the words my, my gimme, / 41, he wasn't walking, 42, not walking quickly, 43, never running round the pavement of his city,"
I didn't realize either of you were very engaged while watching the video, so I was excited about your discussion at the end. I've watched MG3 a lot and honestly hadn’t thought about why he used that thick, fibrous rope over the hood other than visually impactful (ie immediate association to being hung).
Anyhoo, I love the video, and like the song (though not as much as a deep dive into the lyrics of "Illest of Our Time" or "Animal Flow"). Thank you for your reaction!

I love your reactions. On your comment about him removing the hood, and it gave a face to the actual person. It makes me think of the first one, at the end, he drew a face on the faceless "hostage", and then chose not to pour the gasoline on them, but on himself. I cannot define or explain the meaning to the facelessness, or the hood and rope, but do notice also, how easily he was replaced by another hooded person as well. The best part of Ren's art is how it can make you think and begin to find your own meaning.

Nice reaction and take on it! Here's how I see the Hoods and Noose thing: it's basically saying we're all stuck, like hostages in this Money Game. We're forced into this system and don't really have a choice. The cool part is, it's also showing that we're all the same underneath - you can't tell who's who when everyone's wearing a hood. In MG1, I think the dude isn't wearing a hood because he's clued in on the game. By putting eyes on the Hooded Man, it's like giving them a face for us to see and giving them eyes to see what's going on. Like, in that gas tank scene, the Hooded Man reacts, but before, he only reacted to physical stuff and sounds. That's just my take on it, though!

Great discussion, picked many of the things I saw in the video. Nurturing is a key factor for me. Father always pushing for more, in Jimmy's case, power overtakes as the currency. I draw parallels with some billionaires that feel the need to step into politics, IMO seldom for altruistic reasons. Your point at the end is relevant to many Ren songs, your take could be completely wrong you said, when in fact, Ren watches many reactions seeing things he never saw when writing the piece, but just as valid as his minds eye.

You could see the hoods as money bags, but I think that's less important than the simple fact that they hide your identity.
Ren demonstrates in the beginning that any one of them could remove their hood if they chose to. Everyone participates in the money game, but no one wants to admit (even to themselves) that they do.
Even after being called out directly and watching Jimmy take his own life for being so corrupted by money, the rest of us faceless participants are happy to go on playing the game.

Btw another one take (well almost, there is one cut just before string quartet is revealed as they needed to move mic from his jacket he is about take off and put it onto his pants).
    Played and sang live.
Violinist on the left get splashed by the rain and her violin was damaged. She played along knowing her reaction would kill the 'one' take ... She got a new violin.
Yamaha provided, tuned and installed the grand piano that is apparently 200k piece .. way to go Yamaha.

Also think the bags are about being blind to the reality of what money is doing, and we don't even notice that it is on us (among ten other things it alludes to).

White hood is defo everybody in money game one - and the eyes are trying to create awareness.
You are southern gents - white hoods are different ball game there. They aren’t peaked like the three letter lynchers - or the Spanish originals.

not saying this is the only way to look at it [it's not- i like the "money bags" interpretation and the interpretation in this video!] but i think it's interesting that when ren describes the white bags in the money game series, he describes them as "hostage bags"

I think the hood is a money bag 💰but we ARE faceless slaves to the money game. There is no right or wrong it is subjective and it hits different for everyone! I enjoyed your discussion! I think the strings were extremely powerful as well they always seem to lend gravity to the song/situation! The only thing I would have liked you to have mentioned more was the insane quality of the visuals including the masterful videography. Thanks as always! ✌🏻🫶🏻

I hate that the other guy stops watching the video. Hate it. Pause and delve in to the piano. I've watched a few of your vids, and I haven't subscribed. Maybe this is why? I don't know. Because I do like you guys. It seems pompous to stop watching and make it about your own skills when it is a reaction. Sorry, I have to be honest.
