Yeah, i didnt include that in the video because it fucked with the pacing a little bit, still a really funny interaction and i think it breaks up the chapters nicely since those graveyard sections go on for a while
The voice acting in these games really makes it clear as to how bad the situation is from the mechanic to the lost guns, it really goes from the first one of “high on fast, outrun the hell” while the second has that but with the added dread of the situation and need to keep going
They said Artillery was useless against the dead. Explosives used by Hell fire 26 and Carpet bombing shows otherwise. It was a mere suicide to reclaim the lost city while losing ground
General Sherman has possibly made the worst decision ever made in game, wasting all resources on *ONE* speeding car and essentinally sacrificed a whole city of still remaining survivor and soldier, essentinally condemning the country
The infection had already escaped the city and the state had already been infected, if not the country. Radio chatter in RotD2 at the end indicates it. They weren't waiting for John to break quarantine or for Sherman to make mistakes.
Ehhh debatable. Especially in comparison to the previous commander of the operation who just gave the same order over and over until his people decided to let him go. Hell they were the ones throwing all the resources at John in the first place. General Sherman may have not made the best decisions but he definitely not made the worst of them, he was doing what he can with what he got and what he got was definitely not the best.
They had to becoz they think creasmen is and effected trying to escape they have no joice but shoot any civilian to prevent the virus from spreading quickly even thou some and many zombies already escape
Well, people waited for new Sailor Moon for 20 years, so we still have some chances. Or someone else picks up the saga and continues it in the steps of Evil Dog
Well, considering how many series in the game industry has been butchered, I've come to accept that like Strike series, this series shall be ended with a bang of their peak.
It's honestly insane, cuz if I'm being honest, Cocheta sounds like he was voiced by Chris Guerrero (who did also work with TFS), like... that sounds so far from what I expect to hear from Nick.
General-Ivan (Cocheta) is actually Chris Guerrero, not Nick Landis. So yes, you get to hear Ainz Ooal Gown himself before he got some seriously good VA roles
Another thing, judging by his name, appearance, and how he was introduced in the intro. i think Cocheta name is actually the native american name for "Stanger", and as someone who belongs to the Mohawk tribes, i find that really cool
Recently on a stream evil dog said that both the Lost Guns names have deeper meanings sorta, and you are actually correct, Cocheta means stranger, and he was alone, therefore he was a solo-man. Diane Roseworth is someone who was Dying and was worth Reviving or resurrection or something along those lines Im paraphrasing, but its a neat fact i only learned after the fact.
This game's plot despite being simple was executed soo well it really hooked me in, god i wish Saga of the dead ended up on steam like all the other classics like Madness project nexus or hell even strike force heroes now...
I've heard Evil Dog talk about maybe going back to Saga of the Dead eventually after they're done with their current projects. It's not a completely abandoned franchise.
You know, to this day I do not think I've ever seen a better game set during the outbreak of a zombie apocalypse than Road of the Dead. Most zombie games take place almost exclusively after the full collapse of society an, if they show any part of the outbreak, only represent a small part of it.
@@jaredjosephsongheng372 The first RE game doesn't really show an outbreak. You're in a contained structure and by the time you show up everyone is dead. Similarily, in RE2 you enter the city after it has already been overrun. You don't really get to take part in the actual outbreak. RE6 has a decent outbreak you get to be part of, but it is sadly a very brief part of the game.
In Zombie media per se, it represents best how the chaos on the streets FEELS. Like. Normally, you have survivors who typically lock themselves in. Or, as you said, then survive & thrive as the outbreak has already been going on. I can def. both imagine the chaos on the street + the impulse of "Fuck it! I'm driving away as far as possible".

So the last time I checked about the game devs of this game series, he said that he's now working with Ubisoft nowadays And all his future projects for this game series has been set down aside as a _"side project"_ *(If I remember correctly, he's working on a sequel called "Streets of the Dead" where we play as John Creasman again)* But since Adobe got chopped-off from the cutting board, safe to say that... he probably cancelled it. I hope I am wrong. But man, we needed atleast a remaster or a remake of the first two games and sell them on Steam. Edit: And I also remember that the dev was also making a game called "Defence of the Dead" where we play as Sherman, Diane, and Cocheta. Definitely a defence strategy game from how it sounds

3:00 the s-15 virus is very similar in origin to the rage virus from the 28 days/weeks movies. The only difference is that the s-15 infected are actually zombies where as the rage infected are still alive.
The issues with crashing he was talking about in Road of the Dead 2 are fixed on the version preserved in Flashpoint.( a massive project to preserve all the flash games. Legit. Its all there) My personal favorite line in the series: John Creasman "YOU DESERVED THAT!"
I actually did end up running the game on flashpoint, and it still ended up crashing, so all the folks claiming that flashpoint doesnt crash are spreading misinformation
I’ve always loved how whenever you upgrade your perception ability in ROTD 1, John says “I need to focus!”, implying that his ability to gain omnipotence of his surroundings is just him locking in.
Regarding the longer play sessions, you'd probably have more success playing these games with the offline Adobe Flash projector through a program like BlueMaxima's Flashpoint (a Flash archival project, among other formats), to get around the crashing and framerate issues Flash emulators like Ruffle and the Newgrounds Player have. In any case, good video on the series, I enjoyed this series a lot years ago too.
@@RealGameriel Actually its a different case, if you DO beat the game on a normal flash player AND THEN boot up the NG player, the achievements sync to the NG one, so if you beat the hardcore mode u wont get it immediatly, u gotta quit the game and open it up with a ng flash player. Thats how i got my achievement :p
@@RealGamerielThe game also runs well in the downloadable flash players that run .swf files directly on your PC without any browser. I use a 32 bit version and can get a steady frame rate on ROTD2 by setting the graphics to low. It also tracks Newgrounds achievements, but it’s a little buggy so whenever you boot it up it will have the pop ups for all of them one after the other.
Also there appears to be a game Defence of the dead in making, where you will apparently defend the city of Alliance, its pretty fresh info so i cant confirm if its really gonna happen or not.

Great concept to this day of the game and how to use "limited" resources/tools to make a fun game, Flash had several of these and Road of Dead was one of the best and had the best animations. It's a concept that would be really cool to explore today.
I mean, thats kind of how Game Jams work, limited time to make a decent game, or a demo of one at least. thats where a lot of interesting indie games come from nowadays, Rollerdrome is a notable example.

The resources they threw at john didn't screw them over i road of the dead 2 cocheta and diana talk about all the orders thqt HQ gives that resulted in heavy casualties sherman really took over a doomed situation considering this is day 7+
The resources were definetly wasted all things considered. It may not have entirely caused the army to lose control, but it certainly sped up the process
@@RealGameriel tbh since rotd1 was all john's incredible intuition and (not) very careful planning it may not be canon that the military wasted most of their resources on him, since rotd2 doesnt have any kind of human soldiers on the highways in lost guns, hence no reason to nuke john as hes not running over much. maybe he ran through a few checkpoints but thats about it
Bringing up the helicopter spawn lines in the first game, I love the one where John yells that he ain't stopping, made more awesome if you're on your last legs.

I just noticed: The shape of the top of the dashboard and the little A/C vent in the left corner above the steering wheel are exactly correct to the real life fifth-generation Ford Mustang. Someone on the team for this game definitely owned one. I'm guessing everything else being inaccurate are just limits of making it look good in Flash, though if they do a remaster I'd love to see the entire interior to be realistic. It's a good choice for a car in a game like this - it's pretty much designed to make the driver feel powerful.
Lab of the dead was my favorite. Doing whatever you wanted with a zombie was fun. Experimenting to see what kind of reactions and stuff you could get out of them when you had their stats were just right was a lot of fun.
Saw this is my recommended and the thumbnail looked familiar. Not sure when road of the dead came out but I played it a few months before flash was shut down. I started playing old games for nostalgia and played this. I couldn't beat it and but I still enjoyed it and it brought back that feeling of playing games when I was a kid :)
I played the games before and din't pay much attention to the story but seeing the 2nd game story develop it actually got me rooting for the Lost guns to escape the nuke
I feel your pain on hardcore. I suggest the standard humvee and fully upgrade everything. And also max reload skill, handling, any skill that requires you to do it repeatedly. The toughness of the characters can only increase from crashing into cars or surviving explosions. Also the mounted guns are really good on highway. I prefer using the mg so you can make a straight path if necessary and can take out 1 or 2 mutants if you can spot them from afar. Keep it on short burst fire for accuracy. But once their half way to your vehicle. Go full auto. Edit:the campaign being 1:30 mins long up to 4 hrs none stop is insane. Unless you pause to relax. But if you don't have anything that keeps your computer on staying cool and the game crash is just awful. It was almost impossible to finish hardcore with the crash.
Man the nostalgia hit hard with this one. Despite the title I didn't expect such a deep dive into both story and mechanics but I was plasently surprised, thank you for this! While I have to say I liked RotD 2 more for the chances to repair and the more flashed out shooting, RotD 1 still stands out to me as the best pickup and go kinda game! The gun handling leveling especially for The M60 was a grind in 2
You have a lot of talent for essay making! I'd like to see you cover more flash games in this style in the future, as there aren't that many essay videos of flash games, despite the potential being right there. 1:05:24 Plenty of Flash Games had their own level editors, albeit some needed to be accessed by external programs. Plazma Burst 2's, for one, could only be accessed on the main website, and even then you needed an account to make levels, but once the barriers were out of the way, you had access to an easy to learn and versatile editor.
What i love about mutants is that there heads are protected by there skull that trough the virus has been harded acting like armor the mutants also try to destroy the engien by slamming on the hud showing that they are smarter they also travel in heards (or packs) to be more effektiv working together and running after the humV i know im spoon feeding the things gameries said about the mutants but that's why i love them so much
Tbh John Creaseman's Car is probably like one of fiction's underrated coolest cars out there and is the main focus of the first game so I'd say having its own wiki page makes sense. Also personally found myself enjoying lab and range of the dead, they're pretty decent gaiden games. For the first one its mainly because of how different it is and also because I like how Lab is just a playable version of George Romero's Day of the Dead. Plus seeing how the Zombie's act and react to stuff was genuinely kinda charming.
i used to play the second game with my sibling like it was a 2 player game since the gunner could be controlled solely by the mouse and it really helped form a bond i feel, im so glad i found this video!
Oh yeah one other thing, going off of the death stats and how people have managed to do no death runs of RoTD 1, John's great escape covered roughly 49KM / 30.4 Miles
Something i would very much like to bring up since i thought it was cool around the start of the game diane mentions how hard they are to kill and cocheota brings up something about hitting a certain part of the brain. This right here is excellent game design in my opinion, it doesnt stop you with a prompt afterwards thinking it flew over ones head but at the same time it is something easily overlooked since its just a piece of dialogue. Further elaborating shooting around the nose and mouth area doesnt do much, typically when playing games (especially zombie games) you shoot the head area and they go down, but when they grapple on its really easy to see the difference between shooting the "face" and actually shooting for the brain (the forehead) and honestly part of why i bring this up is due to the shotgun being placed as third priority, when properly avoiding obstacles and the dead theres a lot of downtime for reloading typically more than i ever needed meaning that the shotguns biggest downside of slow reload is essentially solved after that theres fire rate and damage. As far as fire rate goes its actually pretty decent, due to there being a limit of two on the hood and one grappling fire rate never really felt like an issue. FOR DAMAGE HOWEVER, it is pretty meh and in long situations where you cant avoid much of anything it does fall of compared to the AR but as previously mentioned when aiming for the brain it does massive damage and clears off most of the small fry in a single shot (granted it is at level 3 that it starts doing that but its way less intensive on ammo when you cant restock easily) and tends to be the one i keep out for any strays that grab on. Anyway just wanted to bring the cool tiddbit up since i wasnt sure of what all you had known about the game. (theres a few other things like how mines are amazing at clearing mutants and how you can shoot the mutant grappling the driver with your gunner and straight up kill the thing)
Update: just finished watching the video (very well made btw), so... Hardcore mode in Road of the Dead 2 is still beatable on Newgrounds player. You just have to endure really severe performance drops and lags that cripple controls of the car. Meaning the hardcore mode is twice as hard now. It lags... a lot, too much even, but, at least, doesn't crash.
My first experience with road of the dead was playing the second and getting a overwhelming urge to throw up after 5 minutes of playing due to the amount of gore cause I wasn't even 12 years old at the time, glorious.
I'm so sad that road of the dead 3 is likely never happening.
Devs actually wrote somewhere that they are already doing road of the dead
@@Senator_Cumstrong
if you're talking about that beta thing wasn't it an april fools joke and just redirected you to segway of the dead
@@lvadimass no, devs just finished their new game and in discord they said that they will start doing rotd3
Edit: It's actually Chris Guerrero from Overlord who voices Cocheta. Fandom wiki changed to the correct VA.
Credit - @RoSohryu
AKA Prince Vegeta himself
That explains the ABSOLUTELY AWESOME FUCKING voice acting. Athough, every voice actor in the franchise was gold.
@@RoSohryu This must be one of his debuts then, awesome!
Those games are basically "what if George A Romero tried something in the video-game industry"
Also, WE NEED A 3D REMAKE OF THOSE GAMES!
Another thing, judging by his name, appearance, and how he was introduced in the intro. i think Cocheta name is actually the native american name for "Stanger", and as someone who belongs to the Mohawk tribes, i find that really cool
Recently on a stream evil dog said that both the Lost Guns names have deeper meanings sorta, and you are actually correct,
Cocheta means stranger, and he was alone, therefore he was a solo-man. Diane Roseworth is someone who was Dying and was worth Reviving or resurrection or something along those lines
Im paraphrasing, but its a neat fact i only learned after the fact.
I remember the helicopter quote John had one time where he went "I'm not stopping you hear me? I ain't stopping!" got chills from that
A man of pure desperate determination.
I think that quote always triggers if the chopper spawns during the final two minutes.
This game's plot despite being simple was executed soo well it really hooked me in, god i wish Saga of the dead ended up on steam like all the other classics like Madness project nexus or hell even strike force heroes now...
What I can't wait for is Raze being remade for Steam, Raze alongside Road of the Dead were heavily part of my childhood
It shoulda been on steam along with The Last Stand franchise and the aforementioned games.
I've heard Evil Dog talk about maybe going back to Saga of the Dead eventually after they're done with their current projects. It's not a completely abandoned franchise.
55:09 Imagine general Sherman said "Hello and Goodbye Mr Fuck You" 🤣👌
The first nuke in the second game got to his NG's player, the second it scorched the car,the game crashed.
This,my friend,IS REALISM.
You know, to this day I do not think I've ever seen a better game set during the outbreak of a zombie apocalypse than Road of the Dead. Most zombie games take place almost exclusively after the full collapse of society an, if they show any part of the outbreak, only represent a small part of it.
Atom Zombie Smasher? Though that's at such a strategic view it's hard to see it the same way as something like this.
So The First Resident Evil game that literally starts in an enclosed bunker hundreds of feet underground doesnt exist to you?

Finally
Acknowledgment for this fabulous game series.
Also, I love your content. Keep up the good work.
"God has nothing to do with this" is such a cold line that perfectly sums up what the entire city is going through.
I legit would pay to watch a movie with this game plot
Closest I can think of is the dawn of the dead remake toward the end.
So the last time I checked about the game devs of this game series, he said that he's now working with Ubisoft nowadays
And all his future projects for this game series has been set down aside as a _"side project"_ *(If I remember correctly, he's working on a sequel called "Streets of the Dead" where we play as John Creasman again)*
But since Adobe got chopped-off from the cutting board, safe to say that... he probably cancelled it.
I had to stop 11 minutes in and say that this was a VERY well done video essay for such a small channel. Cool to see there are still old dudes who remember OG flash era.

Man, The Last Stand games and Road of the Dead were my jam.
And I am glad that ConArtist games finally did their own bigger games, including similar ones to 1944. But plz bring back Dead Zone as an offline game I beg you.
Idk if Evil Dog have done games of their own tho.
Dead zone as an offline game would scratch an itch I've had since I played it when I was younger

Been looking for longer videos to listen to before I sleep and this was great, subbed
Legit. Its all there)
My personal favorite line in the series: John Creasman "YOU DESERVED THAT!"
Yeah, but then i wouldnt get the newgrounds achievements :(
@@RealGameriel Actually its a different case, if you DO beat the game on a normal flash player AND THEN boot up the NG player, the achievements sync to the NG one, so if you beat the hardcore mode u wont get it immediatly, u gotta quit the game and open it up with a ng flash player. Thats how i got my achievement :p
Holy shit this is huge.
Rotd2 completionist video soon
@@RealGamerielThe game also runs well in the downloadable flash players that run .swf files directly on your PC without any browser. I use a 32 bit version and can get a steady frame rate on ROTD2 by setting the graphics to low. It also tracks Newgrounds achievements, but it’s a little buggy so whenever you boot it up it will have the pop ups for all of them one after the other.
Holy crap. I just realized... These Mutants are my Childhood's version of Volatiles from Dying Light 1. 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Also there appears to be a game Defence of the dead in making, where you will apparently defend the city of Alliance, its pretty fresh info so i cant confirm if its really gonna happen or not.
Its up in the air, whether or not its actually bieng worked on. my bet is that its cancelled at this point, no updates since 2017.

@@RealGameriel I feel you. They really overpriced Bo3 with all the DLC's, and Bo1 is just cruel

The day Evil Dog brings out RotD3 im gonna fall on my knees and weep in gratitude, nostalgia, etc etc
@@RealGameriel I mean can't make a FUBAR situation anymore FUBAR
@@RealGameriel tbh since rotd1 was all john's incredible intuition and (not) very careful planning it may not be canon that the military wasted most of their resources on him, since rotd2 doesnt have any kind of human soldiers on the highways in lost guns, hence no reason to nuke john as hes not running over much. maybe he ran through a few checkpoints but thats about it
This video awakened so many hours of supposed to be doing work in IT playing this or last stand.
I wish Adobe didn't kill flash off as I miss these
Ironically, This video was made while i was supposed to be doing IT work
Bringing up the helicopter spawn lines in the first game, I love the one where John yells that he ain't stopping, made more awesome if you're on your last legs.
This video is absolutely top notch and deserves to have 4x the views. The video had me pulled in to the point I had zero knowledge of the runtime being the length it is until I needed to pause it and grab my charger.
Hope after I wrap up this video I'm gonna find more videos of this quality on your channel. Keep up with the work and you're bound to get the views you deserve.

I just noticed:
The shape of the top of the dashboard and the little A/C vent in the left corner above the steering wheel are exactly correct to the real life fifth-generation Ford Mustang.
I was so traumatized by that opening animation... Man just getting eaten alive in front of our eyes!
44:49 *”OOHHH!.”*
The gun handling leveling especially for The M60 was a grind in 2
This was such a good video I didn't belive my eyes when i saw how little subs you had. Can't wait to see what you do next ❤
Gameriel: talks about the road of the dead flash game
RUclips: Ah yes, L4D
You have a lot of talent for essay making! I'd like to see you cover more flash games in this style in the future, as there aren't that many essay videos of flash games, despite the potential being right there.
1:05:24 Plenty of Flash Games had their own level editors, albeit some needed to be accessed by external programs. Plazma Burst 2's, for one, could only be accessed on the main website, and even then you needed an account to make levels, but once the barriers were out of the way, you had access to an easy to learn and versatile editor.
I Remember Learning About Zombies Through This Game When I Was A Kid And Had The Absolute Worst Nightmares Considering How Young I Was
Me and my brother play ROTD 2 together. One drives, one shoots. Been doing it for years.
This made me sub its nice too see that people love this game and love the nostalgia as much as I do
It’s always the small RUclipsrs that make the best videos
great vid, this series was always one of my favorites back when i was younger
What i love about mutants is that there heads are protected by there skull that trough the virus has been harded acting like armor the mutants also try to destroy the engien by slamming on the hud showing that they are smarter they also travel in heards (or packs) to be more effektiv working together and running after the humV
i know im spoon feeding the things gameries said about the mutants but that's why i love them so much
Tbh John Creaseman's Car is probably like one of fiction's underrated coolest cars out there and is the main focus of the first game so I'd say having its own wiki page makes sense.
Gameplay: "wow! car go brrrrrrrr"
Lore: "What?"
I like the "crazies" (1970s) angle on military incompetence the games present. It really humanizes the the military.
i used to play the second game with my sibling like it was a 2 player game since the gunner could be controlled solely by the mouse and it really helped form a bond i feel, im so glad i found this video!
If you ever feel absolutely useless in life just remember john creasman has side mirrors on his car 😂
I've played it so many times, completed hardcore modes in both games. This is hands down the best flash game ever made.
Flash will always have a special place in my heart, road of the dead, raze, SFH, many others
