IMHO, the best explanation of the downswing I have experienced in my 39 years of golfing. It's the blending of all three movements: forward, outward and down perfectly synced makes a great golf swing. That's one important reason why professional golfers tend to be superior athletes; the blending of the three movements is not an easy task. Thanks for the video and for giving me direction in my practice.
I've been aggressively firing the hips all this time bc that's the conventional wisdom, and while it's served me well for the most part, I had inconsistency with the driver. Your breakdown explanation really helped me to work on my driver. Thanks!
Great tips. I can definitely relate to the analysis. I learned more from this video than a few hours of personal instructor’s time! Thanks again for the clarity.
Thank you for such easy n precise explanation to everything!!!! Your instruction is so much easier to understand than most if not all of the you tubers out there!!!!!
You have a great way to communicate and enjoy your channel. I did want to mention the lateral movement of the hips and chest. I see most teachers saying from the top start the lateral movement - which can work. But it must be stated that the majority of lateral movement of pro players starts well before the top of the swing and the majority of that movement (re-centering) is done earlier that most realize. This is well measured with biomechanics such as gears for years. I’ve seen you teach this and know you know this. But this point I find so critical to a successful swing wanted bring it up. Especially for amateurs who need this early movement to get more time to clear. Keep up the great work!!
I agree. It would be so helpful if we could see the movement itself...what the feeling is and what you try to do for your own downswing initiation. Thank you.
Jonathan. I like your videos and feel like I am hitting it better. Always had the tendency to hang back and it seems like the "Punch Drill" has really helped me. thanks
EXCELLENT INSTRUCTION - One thing - the timing of the downward movement of "triangle" seems critical for those of us that over rotate. My right shoulder comes across my body sometimes too early - as well it seems that my hands are not low enough --- but I need your imput to be sure of what to do or work on.
Jon, Your videos are very thoughtful! I love how you describe the moves but most importantly what the feel will be. I do have a question. Would you please do a video on how the transition feels from the back swing to the downswing. Thanks
Johnathon, thank you very, very much. You are so good!! I would like to hear "how" to do the first part of the downswing. I have found that in order to get the hips started forward, the key is not to "lean" into it. Instead, the key is to have enough torque/tension in the right hip which will give you some power to move the hips forward. Steve
Hi Jonathan, thank you so much for this video! I was struggling to shallow my club by using the hands only, I did not realize how moving the hips helped with it!
I am so glad I just found your channel. I like you how you said every body parts plays the important rolls, and our focus depends on our own tendencies. You are a great instructor! Keep up the good work. I will tell all my friends to watch your channel for sure!
Jonathan, you are doing a great job in your instructional videos! The great things that you are doing are showing the faults we are doing, the causes, and the ways to fix them. This video as well as many more of yours have given me a better understanding of my faults that I have struggled with for years notwithstanding having read so many instructional golf books as well as so many other golf instructional video clips. Big thumbs up to you.
I respect your knowledge sir! I have come across other videos that promote a squat to start the downswing then push to use ground force to gain club speed. I don't know how one returns to the proper club head height consistently. Your thoughts?
Once again thank you for the lesson, always great to see a lesson like this. Just have a question, during the weight shift, where is the pressure on your left foot, is it more on the toe or heel?
OMG....you could have used my swing to model the faults! I am ALL that you described, from improper posture to firing the hips and pulling visciously!! I'm going out in an hour. I guess it's too much to ask to expect a complete turn around in my swing. :)
What is interesting is your recommendation at 3:30 , namely not turning hips too much is right on and is completely opposite to your fellow Canadian colleague Larry Cheung!
Just found your channel. Man I’ve been struggling to find a consistent golf swing. At the start of my downswing my buddy told me to turn and fire my hips open. That worked for a few shots but had completely ruined the rest of my game. I’m going to go back to this sort of movement. Thanks
Great videos Jonathan! 🙂👍🙏 Mr Hogan said about initiating the downswing "The faster the hips move, the better. They can't go too fast." Perhaps the interpretation of these words from his "Five Lessons" book has something to do with the issues you state you so often seen in the swings of amateurs?
So sequence is top of the backswing, then a bump laterally, then rotation of the hips, which will then shallow the club prior to impact? Great videos. Just found you and subbed! 👊
That bump will mess up most people. It's a knee outward turn that causes the slight lateral bumping effect. Keep the arm behind and initiating the hip, body turn first will shallow the swing naturally and keep them behind. This also creates lag naturally. I recommend George Gankis Golf videos.
Really liking your channel, keep up the great work! Do you have any drills to help with the hips and knees? Your explanation is spot on but hoping to be able to practice something. I feel out of rhythm. Thanks!
Can you do a video on working with a strong grip. Every coach I’ve had tries to change mine and I’m wondering if you can still hit the critical positions with any grip.
you can hit it well with varying types of grips but your swing has to match up! Grip is not a fundamental but it is variable. If you watch all the players on tour, everyone grips it differently
Could you elaborate on the "arms and wrist" rotation and how it translates in the real swing please? I'm currently suffering from early extension and in to out swing path and no matter what I try, I haven't been able to fix it.
Can you describe how we might know when we have enough lateral bump before engaging the actual hip turn? Do you feel it with the left foot pressures? Like should I begin the hip turn when the pressure is built up on the inside edge of left foot or maybe on the outside edge? Thank you. I hope you answer.
Really like this video… but have a concern. For years, I’ve swayed back and through… getting just the right timing when I was younger… but that timing is gone, and I have a lot of movement backward, and a lot of weight on my trail foot/leg. Suggestions to rotate, or brace against the trail leg doesn’t really keep me from putting more weight or tension in the trail leg… that keeps me from transitioning through the ball and onto my lead foot/leg.
Hello Jonathan, my big problem has always been getting stuck in the downswing. After working on it for a while and doing some research about how the downswing works, I think I might have figured out my problem. In my downswing I would always start by straightening my left leg which would lift upper body and drop the club too far inside path. What I started doing was shifting my lower body to my lead side and turning my shoulders. After doing that for a while I found out that my club was coming over the top a little bit due to shoulder rotation. Now I'm just shifting my weight to lead side and it's helped get the club on a better path especially with my driver, but my irons are overdrawing or hooking. My issue now is that I've turned my shift into a slide which causes me to hit not only hooks, but inconsistent contact with the ball particularly with my irons. Fat shots are a problem now. How can I turn my slide into a proper shift?
I think you should still straighten the lead knee after you have moved your pressure to the lead side. If you keep the lead knee bent you will make it harder to rotate your lower body. I will need to see your swing to give you an exact diagnosis but from what you have written this should be included
@@JKMGolf Thank you Jonathan, I appreciate the response and the detailed videos you provide on RUclips are very helpful to not only myself, but I’m sure many others as well.
are you meaning separation from upper body and lower body? There definitely is separation but its all about the correct sequence and correct amount of separation. It can be different from player to player based on their natural tendencies
keeping your back to the target helps to prevent your body from turning too much in the downswing. If you are a player that tends to turn too much from the top of the swing then that would be a good feel for you to have.
Jonathan you look like you are tilting away from the ball with your upper body as you start the down swing. I try to maintain my “stack “ position at all times. Thank you and look forward to your reply. JB
The upper body must tilt if your lower body moves laterally towards the target. If you keep your upper body ontop of the lower body too long into the downswing and follow through, that will greatly limit your ability to swing from the inside among other things.
Its hard to tell you what particular thing starts the lateral movement without seeing your swing but generally, players rotate too much which limits their ability slide.
This clip explains exactly why I pull the ball left when my swings off. My hips are twisting too much and too soon. You’re the man! Thanks JKM!
Easily best golf coach on RUclips

Such underrated golf instruction videos. Thanks
Great tips. I can definitely relate to the analysis. I learned more from this video than a few hours of personal instructor’s time! Thanks again for the clarity.
@3:20 this is me, feel like rotating hips first and that is bringing the club too steep. Will try the moving the hips forward more, thank you!

Really well-done video. I enjoyed how you kept things simple. Keep up the good work!

Excellent information. I sort of lost my way on this element of my swing recently
Really enjoying your Channel
Thanks Jonathan Kim Moss🙏
Thank you 🙏
Excellent instructions. Most instructors beat around the bush with what not to do instead of showing the right moves.
Thank you for that tip! I need to wait with turning the hip with my 4 iron and Driver👍🙏
Jonathan, great instructions. Perhaps an actual slow motion video of you executing the swing would be beneficial to all.
Keep it up!
will definitely try to add this to a video in the future

You are correct. You can definitely move your hips as fast as you like so long as the rest of your body is in sequence.
Hogan made a little lateral shift with the left hip forwards already in the transition phase. Then he made the big turn of the hips.
Great imaging - I think I got it
Thank you. Now I understand why I constantly slide the tee shot..
Great lesson 👍🏼👍🏼

Should you keep your back to the target as you shift laterally ?
keeping your back to the target helps to prevent your body from turning too much in the downswing. If you are a player that tends to turn too much from the top of the swing then that would be a good feel for you to have.
I find that if I slide my hips in the downswing I come too much from the inside causing hooks.
this kat good
There is a lateral shift & then you need to do a small downsquat movement too, right?
You dont have to necessarily feel like you are squatting down but some people may feel that due to the change in knee flex.
Jonathan you look like you are tilting away from the ball with your upper body as you start the down swing. I try to maintain my “stack “ position at all times. Thank you and look forward to your reply.
JB
The upper body must tilt if your lower body moves laterally towards the target. If you keep your upper body ontop of the lower body too long into the downswing and follow through, that will greatly limit your ability to swing from the inside among other things.
i am a bit confused most other pros are saying you shouldn't slide to mush to the left that you should use your hips
Very helpful, thank you. I am making better contact.
Question ! Are you bumping your hip towards the target? Or are you pushing off with the legs?
A combination of both!
What starts the slide? Really struggling with this move.
Its hard to tell you what particular thing starts the lateral movement without seeing your swing but generally, players rotate too much which limits their ability slide.
Consise
Should you start the forward movement BEFORE the backswing ends?
It will typically start from the top of the swing during the transition into the downswing
