    Nice unboxing and summary of what it's like when you start out with SoB. I have a lot of their older retail stuff. In the beginning, I was excited and loved to assemble the minis. But, now that it's been a few years, and I've seen what some other companies can do with preassembled minis, I feel let down that their latest stuff is still on sprues. Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I would love to just get the box and start playing. It took me a few hours to glue together the minis. As for the map tiles, you have a deck of cards that have all the possible map tiles on them. You start on the starting tile and then draw a card when you explore the next room. This tells you what the next map tile will be. You also roll a die to see how many exits will be on that new tile and close off the ones you need. Most people will explore a new tile and remove the tile no characters are on. So, they may only have 2 or 3 tiles in play at one time, even though that may have explored quite a few more than that. This is because the map can become very large very quickly. I hope you enjoy the gameplay. It's pretty fun, but can be punishing/brutal at times. I still have more expansions to put together...I've had them for 6 months, if that tells you how much I dislike the sprues now. LOL. Have fun!

      I totally understand assembly fatigue. Assembly and cleanup of minis and models is my least favorite phase, and it is something I am not very good at and really need to improve on. It would be interesting to see what they could do with preassembled miniatures. Different molding processes might even give them better results.
      I am looking forward to breaking into some of the many sets I have just lying around, but one at a time for now :)

      @@criticalfail Yes! Don't burn yourself out. Play the core box you have assembled. Start to get a feel for the game. I do want to tear into the Treddaran expansion I have and am really bummed the playable Treddaran characters are KS exclusives. I missed the campaign for that and right now, they are just too expensive in the limited places I've found. I really want to play as SciFi characters.

      @@criticalfail Fortune and Glory has miniatures that do not require assembly. While not the highest quality they certainly work just fine and look decent enough. I'm curious how is the card quality on SoB? With Fortune and Glory the cards are crazy thick almost plastic like. No sleeves needed for sure on those. I"m pretty sure you could soak them in water and they would be just fine lol..

    Great unboxing, thank you!
    I am an avid fan of SoB and love the art and miniatures as well as the variety of scenarios it brings and easily allows you to self-create. It is easily the best RPG in a box around. Which other game has you travel from Feudal Japan to the Wild West, box the Beast in the belly, hop on a Derelict Star Cruiser and then freeze your Tentacles off in the barren and machine infested wastelends of Targa.
    Adventures with Viking and Conquistador settings are currently fulfilling and I am so looking forward to mine, to assemble and paint and hopefully play soon :D Also could not withstand the temptation for Ancient Egypt and the Ghost Train ^^
    Some additions for storage and bling:
    - try to get 3D printed token stands. They are a lot easier to use than plano boxes for the tokens and are very compact.
    - use 2x acrylic 3-step name card stands for the decks you need on the table and A5 pamphlet stands for the monster cards
    - 6 cm high A4+ file storage boxes hold a set of world map tiles beautifully. Have the map deck and the thematically tied-to-tiles encounters also in this box. It also prevents the tiles from warping with humidity.
    - A5 prospect slevves fit the monster and caracter cards very well and you can have a flipbook folder for easy sorting and protection
    - fold-up cardboard boxes and simple deck boxes used for Magic the Gathering give great storage and protection for all the decks. MtG sized sleeves fit the cards very well.
    - a box of poker chips is great to substitute the flimsy cardboard money ^^
    - get coin capsules for the 12 encounter tokens!!! At least if you play a lot ^^
    - ifyou want a more streamlined game use the new rules from Adventures or add these 3 simple houserules:
    --- dependings on the scenario lower the number of exploration tokens to what you deem necessary. They are drawn randomly and the things you need to find can be in the first 3 tokens or in the last 3 ^^ Think of roughly 15-20 minutes playtime per token ^^
    --- reduce the number of plain corridors in the map deck - 1-2 is enough to occasionally draw one ^^
    --- outside of fights always allow a minimum move of 2-3 spaces no matter what is rolled otherwise notoriously unlucky rollers slow everyone down ^^
    The thematic encounter and artifact decks are amazing and you will want more ^^ If so first go for the 15 card supplements, explicit Mission packs and most importantly Frontier Town which spices up your city phase and comes with town scenario.
    Be aware that this is a simple beer&pretzel dice chucker with a lot of surprises and randomness - take it for what it is and enjoy your exploration. You will have a lot of high-five or epic fail moments that can be camp-fire tales worthy! ... and don't forget to count your tentacles at the end of the day ^^ an extra hand can come awfully handy :D
    If you like the game then there are some great free assets on the boardgamegeek page for SoB Ancient City (everything SoB is collected here). Check out the enhanced Travel Hazard book and the Hexcrawl system ^^ Great fun!
    Happy explorations :D

    I have heard some good things about Shadow of Brimstone but never took the plunged or looked into it further once I heard you had to assembly the mini's. I just don't have the skills for this and pay a fortune to have my KDM mini's assembled and painted. This is the first video I have seen of the mini's and it looks like there are some pegs and holes which might make it easier, not sure if all sets have this same system. I am intrigued to see how much gameplay is in a core box as there didn't seem to be that many floor tiles and the swamp ones seemed to have very mismatched colours at some of the joins. This has peaked my interest again and will be keen your follow up videos on this.

    • @criticalfail
      @criticalfail  Год назад

      I didn't show enough of the tiles. There were enough tiles to build a map to stretch across my table for sure. The color oddities may be due to some color grading I had to do on the footage. I have been experimenting with new camera settings on my phone and I don't have them quite dialed in just yet.
      These are definitely a walk in the part compared to KDM. I love that game, but some of it's minis have given me fits. There is a reason most expansions I have for it haven't been assembled lol.
      I will be doing continuing coverage on the game as I progress. Things should get easier once I have the game table built and leave games out without the cats destroying pieces.

    I've had the original core set for City of Ancients on my shelf for a few years now. I've not even unwrapped the plastic, once I found out it had minis that needed to be assembled I lost all interest! lol Course I also have the original set, not the revised and I too heard that the revised sets had much better miniatures and less to assemble with them. I think I will likely part with my copy of the game and just stay all-in with Fortune and Glory. Good video this game continues to impress me with it's sheer depth. I'm not quite sure there is anything like it out there it's kind of on a scale of it's own and growing!

    The reality is Flying Fog should have made Single Cast PVC miniatures. The idea 'they are customizable' is mostly BS because you only get so many bits to create the model and not lots of extra bits so you have lots of choices. Like 'which arm should I put on this'.

    • @criticalfail
      @criticalfail  Год назад

      I tend to agree. I think while it can be fun to put the minis together, the majority of the player base would rather not, and the sculpts would have looked find in PVC. Then again I am not one to really go nuts customizing anything. Bases are a far as I will go, and even then I am not too creative.

    I'd recommend playing the Core Set a number of times until you start unpacking the others. You may start to get a feel as to what you want to open next, and whether you actually like it enough to do that, or will start to get bored and consider reselling some of the stuff unopened for a better price. Personally I seem to like the game, but play it less than I thought, and kinda got bored a while ago recently. Now thinking whether to get back to it again, but not yet done so, not feeling enough excited yet.

      @@criticalfail Right, makes sense: in fact, I currently have one desk occupied by an adventure "paused" somewhere in the middle, waiting like this for a few months already, not sure how to resolve this and too anxious to pack it, esp. the minis 😥 In fact, your mention of the Plano boxes got me very interested, thanks for this! It feels like they make a lot of sense to me. Let me explain: having a few expansions, some unpacked and some not yet, I currently have a feeling that it's not really the best idea to try and have a "final, complete" storage solution. It's much better if it is open to being constantly tweakable and customizable with new stuff one will add over time to the "standby" collection. In that sense, Plano boxes with movable dividers sound really attractive to me. Esp. given that Flying Frog keeps publishing new stuff, and if one finds out to like the game enough, it may show up they'll get tempted to buy some stuff again in the future, rendering any current "fixed" storage automatically inadequate. [edit:] Also, I'm very curious where you found the particular recommendation for Plano boxes usage? I'd love to see more about it!

    • @criticalfail
      @criticalfail  Год назад +1

      I believe I came across Plano boxes both from a friend in a Discord and I think I have seen talk of them on the BoardGameGeek forums a few times. I agree, the more I see, the more I realize trying to make something as a permanent solution would just be aiming for failure. Instead what I am thinking is aiming for things like custom token trays that account for entire kickstarter cycles or themes. It still may not work, but it is my working theory at the moment. I think as much as I dislike the looks, hanging files or accordion files are going to be best for the map tiles, possibly with a well thought out labeling system as well. Cards will likely end up much like some of the solutions I favor for LCG's like Arkham Horror and such, which are quality wooden flip top card boxes with large generic rows for card storage, and then using some custom dividers to help get the boxes organized. I have seen some really nice ones for Arkham that looks like a briefcase and have room for some custom accents and such to theme them well.

    The revised minis are much better than the old. The worst were the resin special character minis. I’m kinda jealous that it looks like you have the plastic version of the Jargono Natives. The old resins were almost bin worthy. Same for the dark stone shaman set. By far the worst resin minis I’ve ever assembled. I had to use green stuff to attach the arms. Ridic. After ten years, they still don’t have indexes in their rulebook. It’s faster to search online for rules than thumbing thru the rulebook. It is a fantastic game and I’ve bought most of it. All base sets so far including the two new smaller box sets. For someone wanting to give the system a try, the new smaller adventure sets provide a lower cost to entry. However, I will warn that the tile expansion box for the adventure sets is a must buy as there are fewer tiles in them than in the larger core set boxes like swamps of death. The two smaller boxes have a mini campaign along with their standard missions that show up in all of the sets. The game is crazy random so if you don’t like dice rolling, definitely stay clear. Otherwise, buy as much as you can afford and store. It’s great! 👍👍

  • @crimsonsun2000
    @crimsonsun2000 Год назад +2

    Organising this game is a total nightmare.. you think there's plenty of space for cards but not if you start expanding.. I'm at a stage where I have around 6k cards for the game, that's multiple boxes of card organisers, with hand written dividers. A bit of work and you can create a map tile code system, if you have multiple regions and otherworlds it kinda becomes required, I use file folders but there could be other solutions I've not considered, I need a third large file I have so much stuff. Plano boxes, its not one or two, if you think that's a lot of tokens, every otherworld has unique tokens, so do town expansions, mission packs and each core has its own unique tokens and items. You need multiple plano boxes of the largest size you can find, the content is insane if you get hooked on this one.
    Its still a strange game, its far from highbrow or even up to modern design standards, but its a blast from the past on overdrive and damn if that's not still fun.
