    This was so helpful. It’s so hard to find quality videos about fixing old houses that are made of brick or stone. My house was built in the 1890s so the way it’s constructed it very odd. I don’t have a lot of wood in the house. For example, my floor joist aren’t attached to any supporting wood, they lay directly in between bricks of the house’s walls. Meaning my foundation stone was put in place and then the joists were placed on top of those and then the bricks were placed around them and up it went until you make it to the roof. I’m getting a roof replacement in about a month so I’ll see how that was built soon. I’ve been watching a lot of videos trying to figure out the best way to attach my new front porch and sunroom addition.

    • @tylerhumphries3428

      @@flat-earther Unfortunately my roof replacement date was pushed up so I couldn't take off work to watch them work. I wasn't able to see as much as I wanted. But I did find out that the roof that was on the house was the original one. As in, as they started replacing the one layer of asphalt shingles, they uncovered all my original slate. And sadly, none of the five chimneys had been closed even though the fireplaces had been bricked up and plastered over in the 1910s. The roof replacement ended up costing more than originally planned as well because they had to replace a lot of the wood that was up there. We haven't attached the new front porch yet, I'm hoping we can do it before the end of October because my old porch won't survive another Missouri winter.

    Many jurisdictions will no longer the use of lag bolts, only carriage bolts. Also not allowing bolting to masonry at all. At that point it must be free standing. As a firefighter we had a call to a home for a deck collapse. It was a rather large deck about 12 feet above the ground and it had pulled away from the house. Because of the number of injured and the media attention it drew, this accident was investigated. It did have the proper number of bolts spaced properly and had passed inspection several years prior. Because the lag bolts had pulled away from the house the county required the use of carriage bolts.

    • @Rick-the-Swift
      @Rick-the-Swift 5 лет назад

      Lt. Dan, that's pretty funny because carriage bolts are just as likely to pull away as the lag bolts. They're pretty much the exact same thing. Only difference is the carriage bolts may be slightly harder to install. That would be like determining that smooth shank roof nails were inadequate to hold down shingles and that smooth shank drywall nails are to be used in their place.

    Good video Tommy. A quick question if I may, would the use of chemical anchors be less inclined to produce micro cracking and therefore eventually 'pull out' of the masonry wall. Any type of Expansionary Masonry Anchor produces stress lines in brick, block, rock and in close proximity to concrete edges which result in ultimate failure. Chemical anchors are safer, transmitting only the consequence of the load with no built in stress fractures.😁 Just a thought. Love your work. Cheers from Michael. Australia.

    At 3:50, did he drill through both the ledger board and the block of spacer wood with the same hammer drill and masonry bit that he also used to drill into the foundation? That's a good way to burn up your masonry bits prematurely. I know, because I had an apprentice do that to my 18 inch heavy duty masonry bits on a job site.

    I prefer if at all possible to use all thread washers & nuts inside and out rather than lags. you get a much better mechanical fastening using this method, providing that you have access to the inside sill. masonry lags we right on as well as the larger joist hangers.

    After you attach the ledger board like this, the entire deck is now supported on the house end by only the nails that hold the joist hangers. Is this safe?

  • @tomrunning357
    @tomrunning357 4 года назад

    I just had my inspection on my new deck and they want a few hangers that connect the deck truss to the house truss through the ledger board. They are saying the joist hangers are only connected to the ledger board and could pull off the house. Do they make some special hangers to do this? This is a 10'x18' deck with 2x10 trusses at 12 centers because of the composite deck boards and is only 7 feet off the ground. Also the ledger board is bolted with two 1/2" carriage bolts in every joist space.

    • @MrDougfunny7
      @MrDougfunny7 2 года назад

      "They are saying the joist hangers are only connected to the ledger board and could pull off the house." This statement doesn't really make sense. The hangers can't pull off the house, only off the ledger. So I'm confused.
      But, carriage bolts are not meant for use on ledgers, through bolts are. You can use some special lags as well, but it's not the best way.

    This is a bit of a different question but still deals with attaching wood to masonry. I own a 1960's ranch home- wood frame with brick veneer. Asphalt sheet type sheathing was originally used, with no type of moisture barrier wrap like Tyvek. The home has experienced termite damage and some of the exterior walls will need to be reframed. I have some contractors telling me it's not a problem to reframe and repair and other's telling me they literally don't know if it can be done because there would be no way to retie the brick veneer wall into the new framing. Is there an approved standard method to retie the brick veneer into a newly framed wall from the interior (or some way to tie the brick veneer to the newly framed wall from the exterior instead of the interior) so that the brick would both maintain its structural security and avoid cracking? Any advice would be extremely appreciated!!

  • @tls5870
    @tls5870 8 лет назад +13

    In my state lag bolting the ledger board to the rim joists is now against code, you must use through bolts with nuts and washers on both sides. If that means crawling through the crawl space, tearing out drywall or whatever you have to do to get to the inside of the rim joists, that's what you gotta do, and if the inspector doesn't have reasonable access you must take pictures. And if it is a masonry or stucco house the deck must be free standing meaning you have to install support posts under the side of the deck that is against the house as well, including footers. It can be a drop beam but the rim of the deck against the house must then be doubled instead of the single ply ledger. I've never heard of using red head concrete anchors to attach a deck horizontally to a house, they're usually used for attaching post bases to footers.

    My deck has sunk about 2 inches where it attaches to the house; resulted from the house settling; we have a screen room built on top; wondering if there is a safe way to balance the deck back out.

    I have the same issue only worse! My deck is about 34 inches off grade so its difficult to work under. Since I found out they didn't properly attach the ledger to the house, I was going to run another beam. There is only one beam installed and that's not done correctly either. So my plan is now to pour concrete for six new footers using 8" Sonotubes to a 3' depth. The existing beam has three 4 X 4's which are dug into grade no concrete! Also the beam is sandwiched around the 4 X 4's with thru lag bolts, also not proper! I plan on having 12" of concrete of the Sonotubes above grade attaching the beams to either a Simpson Strong-Tie or a 6 X 6 or combo of each. This deck is 20' X 12' , the Beams are 2 X 10's as are the stringers set at 24". The Beams will be 2 X 10's sistered with all the correct hardware. All the Stringers are in good condition as are the existing 2 X 10's but will be replacing those as well. All the Deck boards are bad and the reason I started this mess in the first place. Do yourself a favor and crawl under your decks with a flash light. It is something like 80% of all decks built in the US are built wrong! Also Home Inspectors do not inspect decks, I found this out the hard way!!

    I've gotta say. I'm a woman and watching you tube to learn to fix things myself. I was watching installing closet doors and the computer kept playing leading me this fabulous deck. Men who fix correctly, and build, and work hard are always incredibly sexy and I truly mean it.

    It’s best to use screws into the timber hangers. Also for the temporary supports, they should use screws. Much easier to take out than nails.

    Always bring the nut to the tip of the bolt when hammering, the threads will be saved from getting damaged.

      the threads behind the nut are only needed if you back the nut off. Which he wouldn't be doing...

      I prefer to use drop-in anchors that you set with the special punch tool and a gammer before threading a bolt or threaded Rod into them. Wearing hearing protection while using the impact driver in that confined space underneath the deck would have been a good idea, it must gave been really loud !
