HEY GUYS WHAT'S UP! It's me, Katherine & today I'm sharing all of my top tips on how to survive tech week. For those of you who need a reminder, tech week is the week leading up to a performance. Typically, this is when technical elements such as sound, costume, lights, special FX, makeup, and more get added into rehearsals. The days become longer and more exhausting. Morale fluctuates wildly (as does our sanity). It's a great time.
Here's how I survive tech week! QUESTION OF THE DAY: How do you survive tech week? Are you an actor, designer, musician, director, or theatre fan? chances are-- you've probably gone through this, so I want to hear about your experience! Let me know in the comments down below

How do you survive Tech Week?: you don't
Even though I’m not in a show currently, I’m going through tech week at my Talent Show rehearsals, so this still mostly checks out, thank you!!

I just finished tech week and I have shows today and tomorrow and I had one Thursday.
1. If you’re doing a school production, DO YOUR HOMEWORK AT REHEARSAL.
Make sure you know when you’re on stage so you’re not late for a scene. This way, you don’t have to stay up late doing it when you get home.
2. Lay off the dairy and gluten, especially on show days. They’re not great for your voice.
3. Drink lots of water. Or tea.
4. When you take off your makeup, don’t scrub super hard. For the show that I’m going, I have black makeup all over my face, and it doesn’t really come off with makeup wipes. Use lotion or some other face cleaning product (I use Noxzema) first and THEN wipe it off with a makeup wipe. If you’re using one of those face wash brush things, DO. NOT. SCRUB. I did that and my face was red and burning for the next few days.

Tech week usually means me consuming unhealthy amounts of throat coat tea and chloroseptic cough drops. And panicking. And freaking out 😂but to get through it, I just try to relax, not talk, and SLEEP. And pretend that pajamas are appropriate rehearsal wear

I do school theater so whenever I have a tech week it’s always brutal because I have to wake up really early the next day
Show cheat sheets are a must when you're a swing! They saved my life while I was working for Disney Cruise Line.

Lillian Manuel I believe that they are a person who doesn’t always play a role but if the main person can’t they jump in and cover the role. And I think they also generally cover more than 1 role.

I love bringing comfy clothes during tech week cause when your done with rehearsal you can start to come down your mind and body and relax

At my high school, we put up a compliment wall where people can write compliments for people on sticky notes and put them up! It’s so nice to show appreciation and see that others appreciate you :) I really like steaming before I go to bed with a personal steamer, but taking a hot shower can work for that too!
I drink LOTS AND LOTS of honey water and just water in general. And I’m literally running vocal exercises all the time 😂 Love you Katherine ❤️❤️

My theater's production is March 16th and 17th, so we might be performing at similar times! xD And during tech week, because I'm still in high school, I try and work on any homework I have that's due later that week, or work on upcoming homework before tech week so I can focus on the show and my parts. I also drink lots of water and tea, along with carrying plenty of vitamin C cough drops. They keep me from getting sick and help sooth my throat. I did Into the Woods two years ago and it was so much fun! BREAK A LEG YOU TALENTED BEING!!

A big part of surviving tech-week I feel like is treating fellow actors and crew members with respect. Drama during tech-week is no fun and it just causes more stress on everyone. Btw I love all your videos and you are such an amazing gorgeous person both inside and out. Break a leg at your show😊

Hey Kat! Any audition advice for people who aren’t strong singers and just want to be in the ensemble, but have to sing alone for auditions? I could really use your help💕🎭 Also, a video on how to make a cheat sheet would be awesome!
Hanne Banana Just explain that! Casting directors love people who are open to be in the ensemble and so just Sing-a-Song you’re comfortable with and is easy for you and focus on your acting in your monologue to make it pop!

BLESS YOU FOR THIS. I’m in tech for little mermaid right now, opening night is tomorrow! I just drink a lot of tea, getting as much sleep as possible, and eating well. Lots of fruits, veggies, and enough protein to give me a lot of energy!

I'm living in 2020
Okay so one of my friends brought blankets in to rehearsal today and it was THE BEST IDEA EVER. In between our calls we sat in the auditorium in a den we made in between the seating with the blankets over it or just with them over our laps , it was so cozy and lovely and made a 8 hour rehearsal so much better!!! ♥️♥️
For every tech week I've had, I've learned to be wary of Wednesday. Wednesday of tech is usually the most high stress day out of the seven for reasons unbeknownst to me, but if you manage to pull through, the worst is behind you. Be kind to yourself, the other actors, and the crew (even if you want to strangle some of them at times) and remember that when the show comes, it'll will be awesome.

I used to love watching these videos a few years ago, but then and for years afterwards I was really frustrated because I just couldn’t seem to get cast. It had been years of trying, watching all this amazing stuff as an outsider looking in, when I finally got cast in my first play about a month ago!! Tech starts in a little over a month and watching these videos again is like a comfort blanket for the whole process of doing the production. Thank you, Kat :D

For tech week I always wear comfy clothes (always have a sweatshirt) and fun socks (I'm a musician so I can take off my shoes in the pit and it's lovely) and bring tons and tons of stuff to drink the entire show (also some light snacks). Also me and my other pit friends always take turns to bring in baked goods for the pit and those always help keep us alive.

There are a lot of people who call tech week "hell week". And yeah, it can suck, but it doesn't have to. I feel like surviving tech week is all about keeping a positive attitude. If you go in thinking "Ugh, this week is going to be hell" it will be; its a self-fulfilling prophecy, so stay positive! Be sure to eat and drink lots of water! I really love bringing a comfy scarf or blanket to wrap up in if the theater gets cold. SLIPPERS are a must for before you get in costume but after you've taken your street shoes off!

Last year my Theatre group did a production of Peter Pan, the way we survived (and kept quite) during Tech week; and also during the show. Was someone brought this book, that was written and published by a 12 year old (which is quite impressive) but it was terribly written, the plot was so messed up and weird. We would take turns reading it out loud; and we almost finished it! It kept everyone amused when they weren't on stage, everyone was dying of laughter backstage.

One thing I can't stress enough is to keep your area/dressing room/costumes/makeup etc. organized. It can get so messy in certain dressing rooms, so if you have time between scenes, cleanup your area, hang up your costumes, and make sure you're able to find your next costume, it saves so much stress and helps you make your cues.

I have my first college auditions this weekend and you have helped me prepare for them so much. Girrrllll you look so pretty🌟 I'm really not an energy drink person, but once tech begins... I'm ashamed to say the sugar-free red bull comes out! But I think trying to chill as much as possible during the day, and a general positive and focused outlook goes a long way!💕
