Not enough is ever said about Keith parenting skills. I liked that he let the young ones learn from their mistakes but he didn’t berate them. That’s a good man right there!

Love Keith’s perspective after the sail situation. Instead of being angry, he viewed it as a learning experience for the kids. Good stuff. I love how the whole family interacts with each other, not a lot of fighting or animosity. Quality people.

Yep on land dealt diffetently, but sea its a live & learn i feel, they brought up a beUtiful family, i admit i extremely sceptical of sailing with so mich disel lol but the best way is to learn thru travel, i i had my ti.e again, its exactly what id have done, but crap i got traveling dolo mum eith a 2tr old, which was cool when i grew up maybe people only reslised once social media took over.. i so thi k for there family, country, i would home school anyway so why not learn for real make careers out of it.

Oohh, yes, great idea. There is a person in Maine who makes zippered pouches and bags out of old sails and they are awesome. Maybe you could send the ripped sail to her or someone else and they can make and sell a Zatara branded line of items!
Man some people will give money to anything.. foolish people buy ripped old sail pieces with good money
That sail took a beating before it finally ripped in one spot to relieve the pressure. I'm guessing there is plenty of life left in the material for draw string bags. For every "foolish" action there are also just as many cynical or jealous people out there quick to make a judgement without any thought put behind their words. My humble opinion based on creating or doing things that people said I couldn't. @@evinwhiteson4902

Love the life lesson that Keith spoke about. When I was in my very early 20’s my father let me take his sailboat to Catalina with my friends the first time. I was flying our spinnaker downwind and flying home. The wind picked up and I didn’t take it down. It split down the middle. When back home, I informed my father what happened and he said no worries take it to the sail shop and get it repaired. A week later it was fixed and the store advised me it was $500. I went to my father and informed him of the price and his remark was, “and?” I got it instantly that I had to pay for the sail. Lesson learned. 😂

Jack’s such a good, responsible kid, taking responsibility instead of blaming others. Zatara has a great group of people onboard. Refreshing to see the young ones step up. Keith and Renee are great parents.

He owned it, said it was his fault, said he should of ……. but didn’t, he seen his mistake and admitted it like a mature man ! He didn’t blame anyone, he didn’t make excuses, he didn’t minimize what he did, he said, “it was my fault” in front of the world and not many people would do that !!!
If Keith expected Jack to pay for the sail, there is no doubt in my mind he would do so, Keith runs a tight ship and he chose to take a mistake and use it as a lesson to teach his family a valuable lesson in sailing !
So yes, Jack did take responsibility!
They really are remarkable parents.
Why when you have an issue with the wind shifting and gusting with a spinnaker luffing you continue to sail under auto pilot. Surely, you disengage the auto pilot immeadiately 0:10 and sail the boat… and shout all hands to ease the spinnaker sheet with the intention of dropping the spinnaker.
The amount to parenting skills you two have is truly amazing.
You don’t learn from your successes but failure. You guys have a great parenting perspective!
Like others have said, great teaching moment by Keith, and good on Jack for accepting his part in the responsibility of that happening.

I was lucky enough to cross the Bahama Bank at night under a full moon and calm seas. In those days we followed contour lines for navigation. We were running 15 feet. . .if it went shallower we moved back, if it went deeper, we moved the other way. . .We had to stay shallow to keep from being run over by freighters. . .no radar on our boat in those days. Great memories, thanks for reminding me.
Live and learn! Also, always tie a stopper knot so you cannot "accidentally" blow the sheet. The knot will terminate at the jammer allowing you to retrieve it. :)
--Sailors never knot spinnaker sheets. The alternative could be disastrous. They do not run through jammers. Incidents like this explain why.
--That said, this is a gennaker.

This is such a good video, and reminds me of when I learned the same thing. We were running downwind on our 150 genoa, and I was at the helm as dad slept, as everyone else was. The wind was getting stronger, and the boat was handling it better than me. I hated to wake dad, but I thought we needed to change sails. He came up and was looking at everything as I handled the helm, which was getting more difficult. He thought we could keep going, but at that moment we blew the sail. Like you guys, all heck broke loose. We recovered the sail, and put up our storm sail, which was good as shortly after we hit the storms. Like you guys, my dad never criticized what I did, and later we agreed that "next time" we will react better. It was exciting, and I learned alot. Now 30 years later, it is still vivid in my memory of that night. We had so many other memories learned while sailing, which is how we learn. Great video, keep sailing!
My appreciation for the sailers of the olden days just grows and grows.
Even with today's modern conveniences, sailing can be tricky or fraught with danger.
And those old time sailors had none of them!

If the spinnaker is beyond fixing the fabric makes terrific wind jackets and bags. Just found one at my mothers that I made 40 years ago. Get a cheap sowing machine and try to mend the sail might make a good learning experience to. Or a sail for a dinghy. Just a few thoughts.

Hope Keith is able to sleep again. Couple of his kids are very preoccupied with cameras/phones/gaming etc when papa is trying to get in a couple hours sleep. These kids are vets at this point. Glad they took accountability. Hopefully lesson learned.

Keith has some remarkable patience. My father would have had me pay out of my pocket for a portion of the sail only because he could not fire me or he would have made me clean the boat with a toothbrush from stem to stern. He would tell me that you don't learn from mistakes if there are no consequences. I remember cooking steaks on the barbecue one summer. I got distracted and they burned. He made me go and spend my allowance on take out for the family so I would learn to take my assignments seriously. Then he had me eat one of the burnt steaks to hammer the point home. I have never burnt another steak. Another great video Renee.

--As a child, I preferred my hot dogs barbecued burned. I learned to cook in the Boy Scouts. Early on, I may have eaten one meal raw, but never burned.

Key words there...situational awarness, always and all the time. That is the exact reason why I take my daughter who's grown up in central european city life up to Finland both for winter and summer and sailing
It's even more important when you are tired and nearing the end of a journey. It's easy to get complacent.
S--t happens as we say in Oz, it’s how you recovered from this that truly was of importance. You all came together so quickly to assist, you prevented another major issue from occurring, you knew how to remain safe whilst grabbing the sheets out of the water, and went straight into your roles for bringing in that sail, these were the lessons you were taught from young, and now know from all that experience. You did great post event, you remained calm and owning responsibilities, Keith and Renee and kids, it’s a proud moment in time, your home safe and sound! 🎉congratulations..
Jack ! There is an expression; ' Shoulda ... Coulda ... Woulda ... ! That episode was totally preventable. You need to do emergency practice runs each week in order to be fully preparedfor such happenings... Keith, this happens and you want me to take boat life lessons from you ? Maybe later LOL!!!!

One way to avoid that situation is to set the autopilot to steer to a wind angle rather than a heading. If the breeze shifts, the boat will turn to maintain the TWA (or AWA), and most pilots will alert you if the course alteration is greater than, say, 20 degrees.
Renee, you did a better job explaining that nautical stuff than my US Navy Navigation instructors. Bravo Zulu!
I loved the bit about the instrument readings. I watched it a couple times too make sure I retained what you were saying. I appreciate the family journey (love you guys) but really geek out on the information and tech tips.
I watched your explanation of the sail event, as well as Jack's. I'm slightly older with different experiences with my sons, so I'm taking liberties. Your sons are now learning that Dad is not always going to be there, and they need to rely on their own judgement. A "crucible" moment in both their lives...
Skill, not judgement was lacking. A small turn on the wheel would have returned things to normal. Sail trim would have brought them back to course. If not, a sail change was needed.
I just want to say that I love your family Dynamics, I think what you guys did packing everything up and sailing off was the best thing you could have done for your family in these times. Stay safe, God bless and enjoy your family.

You and keith have given your kids an exceptional life traveling all over the world. I think they will learn that things will be different once on their own. The grass isn't always greener on the other side. I believe some of them will want to come back. Especially after they figure out that once off the boat they will have to support themselves.
