Transition Spur Review. Does it get any better than this?

  • The Transition Spur is a new short travel 29er with geometry that is longer and slacker than most bikes with this amount of travel, a combination some refer to as Downcountry. What you need to know is this bike is blimmin’ fast. It flies up climbs, the low weight and stiff carbon frame giving it all the sharpness and efficiency you need to taming big hills. Who needs a motor when this bike climbs this well

Ridden both, the spur is much more accomplished across a wider range of settings XC, flows trails to some trail centres and 50k alpine epics. Izzo is a dull by comparison, sold mine after a month.

Picking my GX build up on Friday. This was one of the reviews that swayed me towards the Spur (against stiff competition from the Ibis Ripley, YT Izzo, and Santa Cruz Tallboy). I really wanted this X01 build as its definitely the best value in the range considering the parts list but my LBS said that they probably won't see any until 2023!!!

Had my Spur for a few months now and it’s soooo good. Rode the SB115 as well and felt the geo on the Spur pips it for a do anything bike. SB115 probably is better on suspension package but the Spur rips everything. For availability I went GX spec and will upgrade over time. Added bigger tyres already as we are nowhere near rekon weather in the UK. Brakes might be next on the list as nailing the downhills

Thanks for this great review, I’ve now watched this many times since ordering my Transition Spur way back in May 2021. Just picked it up a couple of weeks ago, yep a year and a half wait but bloody hell was it worth it. Had it custom built by the great guys at Quench bikes at Bedgebury with Hope, XT, and On One components really is my dream build with some of my favourite gear. Should have been a XO1 build that I originally ordered but transition where still having supply issues with some parts. It will be my one do it all bike replacing my ageing Whyte 19 Ti and my Orange Five and will be used as my local XC / trail bike and for trips to Dartmoor and the Yorkshire Dales where things get a little rougher than my local tame trails. As you say it probably is the closet to that do it all bike out there and just a absolute blast to ride 👍

@@davidarthur me neither but I had my heart set on this bike, it was originally meant to be a year wait. But unfortunately kept being pushed back, luckily I was in no rush as my current bikes where serving me well and to be honest there was nothing else out there that really ticked all the boxes for me. Like yourself I was after that elusive do it all bike. I definitely made the right choice however. Reminds me of the old bikes I once owned in the 90s that I would use for a bit everything be it a XC ride or down at the local jump spot or even a little downhill. Though I’m little to old for all that now the bike would I,m sure be very capable at most things…

    This bike sounds amazing!
I went from an Ibis RIpley to a Ripmo.
I'm very happy with my Ripmo, but something like the Spur may have been a great choice too!
As much as I loved my Ripley and it did great here in NorCal, I felt sometimes I needed more stability
which I get with the Ripmo. I do think based on the Geo of the Spur, the stability seems just as good.

Great review(s). I wonder what you'd think about the Revel Ranger. Its suspension system seems very interesting. I own the SB100 and love it, but I am excited to one day trying the Spur and the Ranger. I feel the Ranger sits kind in the middle between the SB100 and Spur, at least with body positioning (reach) and head tube angle. I can see how the more extended reach of the Spur together with the more aggressive head tube angle makes it a more capable descending bike than the others and a more well-balanced trail bike. Not sure how it'd compare to the other two as far as climbing and pure marathon racer, but I'd be interested to experience it. Cheers! Keep up the good work.

I went for an izzo pro race too based on value, 1k difference is a huge, does the Spur have 1k more in it? I love the izzo, back in the mid 2000's I went back to a hardtail, I hated the FS bikes at the time, heavy, sluggish and dull, the izzo is my first FS since then and it's a superb machine. I'd like to know how the Spur handles the rougher trails.

    • @shaun1900
      @shaun1900 3 года назад

@@rickyhill5263 I agree with the value, that is why I bought one, I sold it because it just wasn’t a great bike for the trails I ride, rode the spur and Ripley extensively as well and landed on the Ripley - awesome bike and way more fun than the izzo. The spur wasn’t as composed as the izzo over really chunky stuff but more accomplished elsewhere.
Having said all that the izzo is still a good bike.

Speaking from experience as a road cyclist who dabbles in mountain bikes there is a huge difference in "ride-feel" with mountain bikes when compared to road bikes (many of which aren't apparent from geometry tables etc)

Hi! I really like this bike! Vs the spark what do you think? I think spur is even lighter, and even without 130 fork probably descend better in every dh. Even Vs spark rc with dropper ..
So for climbing, and flat terrain, the lack of the twinlock do you think compensate to choose one of the other?
I know spur suspension its efficient on climbs but on the long fireroads out of the saddle maybe fork movement its too annoying? On my enduro bike i loose energy ...in this kind of dowcountry bikes its where i feel rear suspension climbing its ok but fork on fireroads ..
I usually do long rides 40 to 80k with 1500 to 2000+ in tech trails, many chunky rocky terrain.
    Hope can help me

Great review David - my new trail-bike choice is actually down to 3 bikes where the Transition Spur 2021 is one of them. Only downside (for me) is that brake cable stapled on the outside...and not internal?? - c´mon, it's a $5.000+ bike, and details like that matters in my book. Really hope they're going 100% internal on the 2022 model. Might go for the Trek Fuel EX 2022 version ruclips.net/video/UdbGYtko4Gc/видео.html

@@gregoryvierra6114 I can see where you're coming from here, just from others comments, the Spur looks much more like a 'capable' Alps marathon machine, it will probably see off the izzo on endurance / long distance, but I would imagine the izzo will handle a fair bit more chunk, I've been quite surprised at what I can throw at the izzo. As someone who has had both I would love to hear more on the comparison.👍
