Nailed it man! As a heavier rider I did have to swap out the 160mm rear to a 180mm. Also spot on with the 175mm cranks. Putting some 170mm on this weekend. The suspension even on a 240ish lb guy is amazing. The initial plush and small bump is just what I needed. I can feel the flex but with the traction and compliance it’s welcomed for what I want this bike for. Anything bigger I’ll reach for the Sentinel. Again, super rad video and spot on review! Can’t wait for more! Party on! 🤘👊😉
It is great, but it doesn’t really work at mellow bike parks which were designed for smaller bikes. Having an old school bike is a lot more fun in that scenario.
“The Spur allows me to ride longer and cover more miles...without 🔌 ⚡️” That made me chuckle! 😂 Great review man! I bet the Spur reminds you of your beloved SB4.5 but with more modern geo.
It was your review that convinced me to buy this bike and do a frame build up. I agree with your review and as a 250 pound rider, it’s been a very happy mix between an XC and heavier trail bike.
I am glad to see manufacturers going back to simpler, shorter travel bikes. Not everyone is a bike park rider, looking for every black diamond trail. If I ever get to purchase another Mtn bike, it'll definitely be a short (120-130mm) travel rig. For now I am enjoying my 27+ Hardtail after a 2 yr hiatus from Mtn biking.
There is an old skool throwback feel to the Spur I can definitely appreciate. Newer bikes are so descending focused it's refreshing to see Transition buck the trend
We just got our first budget full suspension bike, and we like it. I'm sure this one feels even better haha. Not sure if we will go this far anytime soon, but who knows. I would watch your videos on a bike that we would never consider, just because your videos are so good. Thanks for another great video man.
Ohh wow I just realized reading your description that you're really local to me. I live in the East Bay as well. Great video and stay safe through the fire season, hopefully the Santa Cruz trails aren't completely gone at the end of the year 😭

Curse Mike Levy for ever promoting 'down country' haha 😆 But I think they're here to stay! Looking at the Spur and the Hei Hei as top contenders for my new full suspension bike.
Also very interested to see what you think yumyum as my Ripley is still my go to for most of my rides. I am 200 pounder on an XL and I am always concerned about bike stiffness and the other is issues a XL brings to the table and based on this review I am just going to have to demo a Spur to see...
I would say the most interesting part of their latest releases are, what to do with the smuggler? The spur and sentinel combo seems to cover most bases, but if the smuggler comes back at 130/150 could it be the one bike quiver? Great review as always!
Good question! There's a sticker on the back of the Sentinel saying you can run it 140mm with a shorter stroke shock. A lighter build and an angle set to make the HTA steeper (gasp) to 64.6 and a fork spring might fit this slot ;)
Thank you for the video. While the Spur is quite attractive, in contrast to other short-travel trail bikes, the frame cannot handle a 130 fork (120 is their maximum), nor wider 2.6 tires (important for us riding with gravel, sand, rocks), nor a rear shock with a piggyback. If these aren't important, the Spur looks really good.
You got it, Johnny. If you’re into tuner cars, this is similar to the Ford Focus RS. Not much you can do after market, since OEM already took it to its max capabilities..... at least thats what the Spur seems like without having purchased one and owned it for months.
Looks great, as does the rest of their lineup as well. Sadly all are outside of my price range for now. I went with the Commencal AM 29 Origin, just waiting for it to arrive in October. Time slows down when you are waiting for a bike.
You have planted and idea in my head...and it involves getting this or similar down country bike for post bike park season riding 😅 I can just imagine ripping on this bike. Looks so freakin fun🤘
How would you compare it to the SB4.5? Does it climb and descend better; tight switchbacks? My modified XL 4.5 looks close to the L Spur on paper minus the seat tube height and head angle.
Ideal person is 180lbs and under for the spur. Got the 2021 sentinel XO near same price range with fox factory kashima 36 and X2 30lbs. Wish I was light enough to enjoy something like the spur but 120mm for NW mountain terrain would be overwhelming.
Love your reviews! I ride a stumpjumper Evo, it eats everything up, but it seems a little long and overbiked for me. Climbs ok, but tiring doing multiple laps. Looking at the spur or either the pivot switchblade or 429 enduro. How would you compare the switchblade to the spur. What I gain on climbing vs descending. Our trails in Fernie are typically 40 minute climb to descend 10 minutes.
I have a Switchblade (love way more than Stumpy I owned). I'm looking for a shorter travel bike and am leaning towards the Specialized Epic Evo because I want something in this "down country" category, but with a heaver XC focus than trail. Why? I want a bigger gap in the way the bikes feel (keeping Switchblade) so that I don't feel like I, almost, have two of the same thing.
This is on my “eventual bike fleet” list. Right now priority #1 is getting a bike that I can ride on my local trails and take to bike parks without an issue, probably something along the lines of a 140/140, 140/150, 150/150, or 150/160 29er. So effectively a Canyon Strive or YT Jeffsy at my current budget while sales are in effect.
My Spur has been leaking oil out of the rear as well. Disappointing but I haven’t lost damper performance. I’ve done a few 10k’ descents and a bunch of long rides up to 65 miles. Going to wear out the recon soon and switch to a Aggressor rear...
After a year of ownership, do you have any comments on that sid?. The low weight is quite appealing to me, but I’m getting the impression that they all develop bushing play eventually.
Hahaha I’m loving those fast little clips of jokes you throw in there. When I saw the electrical outlet i started laughing. A few months back i demoed about 6 bikes and ended up buying a yeti sb150. Don’t get me wrong I love this bike and treat it like my child lol but there are days I would prefer a shorter travel 29er. My next bike for sure will be a 29er with 130-140 travel.
Dude, your an editing wizard. I worked in advertising for more than 15 years and worked with some really talented AV staff. Where did you get your skills?
The Spur is on my short list (First new bike in 14 years!) together with the Evil Following; would love to know what you think of the following compared to the Spur. Now you mention it external brake line bugs me too!
I love the idea behind this type of bike. But i wish that companies would embrace aluminum builds. Santacruz has. I love the optic however I don’t want to pay $4500 for a base build.
I think you'll be fine. The suspension is really progressive and there's plenty of room to go up in volume spacers if needed. My heavier rider comment had someone 230lbs+ in mind.
This bike really has me intrigued! I have a SB130LR which I really dig and think is pretty efficient for it's category. Do you think there's enough separation between the two to justify the Spur as a second bike for flowy/longer days or just save the $ and buy a lighter wheel/tire combo for those days? I live in Bay Area so ride more or less same trails as you - though not as effortlessly!
You mentioned going with a 34t chain ring to match your 52t cassette. I just ordered a new 52t cassette with 32t chain ring. What will the downfalls or benefits of the route I went? Or did I screw up lol
This will largely depend on many factors including how steep your climbs are, fitness and your preference. I generally run the largest chain ring I can get away with because I'm more of a slower cadence kind of climber. The 52t and the light weight of the bike allows me to run a 34 but everyone's different.
I have a Ripley and about to swap to a Revel Ranger. I think what you would find with the comparison here is the whole idea of weight. The Spur and it's parts are about building a bike in the 26-27lb range. A Ripley is definitely a great trail bike and as such weights are in the 30+ range. I have already seen people taking these light weight based bikes and swapping out the SID for a 130 pike which I do not understand. The point should be - go to this if you want a lightweight trail rocket that does excel in both the ups, flats and downs.
@@pdadv77 mtb Yumyums ripley is 26 lbs, with that said I'm sure a ranger would still be lighter with the same parts. Maybe weighing 200lbs the idea of a lightweight fork, tires and wheels doesn't appeal to me. The ripley is a class leader in climbing and descends so dang well
@@chawkins45ify Why do you think the Ranger would be lighter than the Ripley (with the same parts)? It's frustrating that most (except Ibis) bike manufacturers don't list frame (without shock) weight for us to compare. I am probably wrong but would think the Ranger would be heavier due to the extra linkage in their suspension system.
Love your reviews. They’re very clear, informative, and are presented so genuinely that I feel I could trust everything you say. I have the Spur on the top of my list next to the Trail 429. I’m 230lbs so I’m debating the stiffness argument you raised with relation to rider weight, though another Clydesdale seems to be satisfied. My question is, when you reviewed the Sentinel, there were some paint chipping issues. Are you concerned about that with the Spur?
I haven't ridden a L. After seeing the numbers I decided M was right for me, but I usually downsize anyway. If this were my only do-it-all bike I'd be tempted to go with L with a shorter 40mm stem and higher rise bar.
At 5' 9.5", I went with a size medium Spur, as well. No complaints or regrets so far. It climbs like a billy goat, hops around like a rabbit, and easily eats more high speed hits than you'd ever expect when you point it downhill. This bike is a keeper!
Hey Mike! I’m 5’10 also and I felt the medium was a bit small. I had a blast on it, but hit me butt on the rear tire a few times. I’ll have a Large here soon and I’ll do another video.
Great review! Taking a serious look at this bike vs yeti SB115 and Trek fuel 9.8. But the weight on this bike is insane. Anymore thoughts now that you have had it for a few months?
How would you compare the Spur to the Santa Cruz Blur TR? I don't see anybody talking about differences between the two, and without demos available, it's hard to get answers for myself. Obviously, the Blur TR should be more XC, and the Spur should be more stable on the downhill, but wondering which of the two you like (or liked) more. Also, does the Spur feel slower than the Blur TR? Thanks in advance.
Around 5:30 you mention my exact question about these kinds of bikes. What weight do you have in mind when you say heavier riders might have a different experience. I’m about 205lbs on my lighter days. I don’t ride jump lines but I’d call myself an aggressive rider. Am I near that “weight limit” for the experience you somewhat mention?
I had someone 230+ in mind when I said that. I have no bases for that comment other than speculation considering the 5.4lbs frame, 160mm rear brake rotor, and slimmed down dampers (and oil volume) on the SID. However at least 1 person around this weight is having fun on his Spur so what do I know! The progressive suspension and lifetime warranty is there when you need it. My recommendation is to demo the bike if you can.
MTB Savant thanks. That’s what I thought you where getting at. I’m used to bigger bikes and am currently on a stumpjumper. But I’m interested to try something like this when I’m due for a new bike.
Great review, I've been considering one to my stable. What GPS are you using? Could you do a review on it please? Almost GPS review I see is done by a road rider and based on its function in town and not actually out on a trail. Thanks and keep shredding!!
Hey Man, Awesome video. I am just about to pull the trigger on this bike. One thing is sizing. I am 5'11 and a half. Large is 480 reach but I know the seat angle is quite steep. Large is what I am looking at. I would be buying this bike blind. How tall are you on a Medium. Also I'm on technical terrain a lot. Would you swap to 170 cranks? Wonderful review and quality information. Amazing.
I'll go to a large. I am 5'11 and a quarter with fairly long arms. I queried a few riders who have the bike and Large seems to be the way to go. If it's a touch long I can dial back the stem. I think if I size down the bike might feel to small. The reach number looks long but the seat tube angle is quite steep. Some should keep that in mind. It makes a difference. Thanks for your reply, and I hope to post a video for all to see and review the bike when and if I get it. Love this colour, it's my first choice
Really awesome video and thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and review on the Spur. I can't wait to ride mine hehehe... may i know what sag do you run on your rear shock and also on the fork please? Thank you so very much again :-)
I'm going back and forth between 27mm sag (no spacers) and 30mm sag (stock 1 spacer) on the shock. Can't say which I like better yet. On the fork I usually don't look at sag because a few centimeters fore and aft when setting it greatly affects the measurement. I'm running about 77psi in the fork.
@@mtbsavant5414 great video! How much do you weigh? I can’t get my Sid fork to be supple at the top as you stated. I’m 180lbs and running about 85psi for 30% sag.
have a frame ready to build up , not sure on the stock tyre choice for wet uk trails , what do you think would be a good all conditions maxis tyre combo for this bike , whilst still keeping it light
I'd try to strike a middle ground. Something like a Maxxis Dissector up front and Ardent or Forekaster out back. The new Schwalbe Hans Dampf might be worth a look too. I'm currently running the Michelin Wild Enduro F/R combo on my Offering as a year-round setup (fed up with switching tyres for summer/winter) and they're great, but I'd say much too slow-rolling for the Spur.
Have you ridden a Ripley v4 or Evil Following v3? How would you say it compares? If this bike goes down as good as a Following at its weight it might be the holy grail!
I had a Transition Bandit. That was really light and a climbed and descended well. So it doesn't surprise me that they made this bike. The geo on the Bandit was not great and I never really liked the suspension. This bike looks like a great bike for Tahoe riding!
Very nice review and I thought the same thing you brought up in your video. Hows a heavier rider like me, 215lbs, going to feel about this bike? Glad you thought about us. So you sold the Yeti for this and kept the Mega? Great video as always.
See other comment regarding my comparison to the 4.5. Still love that bike but sold it when I heard a replacement might be in the works only to find out it wasn't what I expected

@@paleh0rse nice. Forgot to mention the M prob has the best front to rear balance since the chain stay length is static across sizes
Hey Mike! I’m 5’10 also and I felt the medium was a bit small. I had a blast on it, but hit me butt on the rear tire a few times. I’ll have a Large here soon and I’ll do another video.
Rich Drew thanks Rich, I think it’s best for me find one to demo. Appreciate the help.
Great review! Taking a serious look at this bike vs yeti SB115 and Trek fuel 9.8. But the weight on this bike is insane. Anymore thoughts now that you have had it for a few months?
Yep it still rips and I still love it. Highly recommended
Obviously you haven't seen the test trail vids(pinkbike) on the EVO or your new gravel bike would be watching you riding one from the porch.
Nice..btw the tools mount on the frame top tube..what mount is it? Any link?
Another great video buddy 👊
Thanks 👍
Im 190 pounds geared up. May be little heavy for this bikes????
You should be fine, shred on!
long and low sucks for bb's....had to up fork my sentinel to cut peddle strikes.
Yeah depending on where you ride it can be a pain
Great video
Great video. Liked and subscribed.
Great review, I've been considering one to my stable. What GPS are you using? Could you do a review on it please? Almost GPS review I see is done by a road rider and based on its function in town and not actually out on a trail. Thanks and keep shredding!!
What stem mount are you using for the Garmin?
K edge stem mount
can you test the YT izzo and ibis ripley Carbon and make a comparison video?
Hey Man, Awesome video. I am just about to pull the trigger on this bike. One thing is sizing. I am 5'11 and a half. Large is 480 reach but I know the seat angle is quite steep. Large is what I am looking at. I would be buying this bike blind. How tall are you on a Medium. Also I'm on technical terrain a lot. Would you swap to 170 cranks? Wonderful review and quality information. Amazing.
I'm 5'10 with about 31 inseam and generally size down. If you're looking to add a touch more stability and less BMX bike feel L is the way to go.
What made u choose this over the tallboy/ ranger/ iBis
Love the review! What is your height and weight? How much sag are you running?
have a frame ready to build up , not sure on the stock tyre choice for wet uk trails , what do you think would be a good all conditions maxis tyre combo for this bike , whilst still keeping it light
I was going to suggest the forekaster out back as well. It's slightly narrower but should shed mud much better than the rekon
Spur or the Ripley?
Stacy Wilcox depends if you prioritize climbing efficiency or ramping shit
Gabriel Scott Not really. They are both fantastic pedaling bikes. Comes down to preference. Only way to know is ride both.
Hi, there im 1.78m and in between size. Should i get the M or L size? Any tips?. Thanks.
You can go either way depending on whether you want to keep it playful or a tad more stable.
@@mtbsavant5414 ok thanks.
I guess me and @B1ker have to sit this one out. :)
lol!
Little smoky out there, watch the lungs!
did you take this down chap? how did it fare?
Ate it up NP
Still happy with the M frame Dude? Greetings!
Yes I am!
@@mtbsavant5414 Thanks! I am 5´10´´ with shortish legs and got an offer for a slightly used medium....still a lot of money to spend, so I was curious!
I do like the video and presentation but $5000+ for what exactly??
Sadly most carbon bikes in this category with this spec are 5k+
Hi! Would you mind giving an update on the rear shock leak? Thank you
As mentioned in the video the shock stopped leaking fluid and it's holding up well for a year.
@@mtbsavant5414 thank you.
Hey I get it
Very nice review and I thought the same thing you brought up in your video. Hows a heavier rider like me, 215lbs, going to feel about this bike? Glad you thought about us. So you sold the Yeti for this and kept the Mega? Great video as always.
The big question is, why sell the sb4.5? Secondly, how does the Transition compare to the sb4.5?
See other comment regarding my comparison to the 4.5. Still love that bike but sold it when I heard a replacement might be in the works only to find out it wasn't what I expected
MTB Savant I can’t seem to find the comment where you compare it to the SB4.5. It would be great to know your opinion.
Also, if you ever buy another Yeti, which build would it be?
Thanks!
You missed the jump at 2:10!
Which trail in JMP is that???
How do you feel about the Spur vs The Izzo?
Same thought
Izzo has more travel, and doesn’t have flex stay in rear. Slightly heavier, but I’d think more capable (both have great geo).
