  • Showing off why I love the combat in this game.
    For those curious, the Grunt who gets gibbed at 0:28 does so because I killed the Snark in the same frame as him. When Snarks die they cause explosive damage, which then triggers the gib. Normally you cannot gib a Grunt with the shotgun. The same thing happens at 0:49.

    I think this is so far the best showcase as to why enemies being unable to shoot and run at the same time produces superior gameplay to vice-versa. It reminds me of the EtherDynamics' video on Exploration vs Exploitation: here, Grunts being unable to shoot in certain moments creates windows of opportunity where player can Explore (experiment) without getting immediately gunned down - resulting in the bold and engaging gameplay like this.

    Each weapon has its own unique usefulness and purpose. This is something I miss in a lot of newer shooters. Also not being limited to 2 or 4 weapons at a time is very nice. While in GTA 5 for example you can carry all the weapons in the game at once, there is no incentive to use a lot of them, as some weapons are just flat out better than others. Switching between them also isn't as fluid as it is in a game like Half-Life. I liked the video btw. Looks like you have thought out your approaches well c:

    This mini sand box style combat is what I love about half life 1. Too bad half life 2 does not have this.

      I miss them as well. Half life 2s combat is a bit generic.

    Can you do a full half life playthrough like this? most half life vids are boring safe gameplay yours looks more fun and exciting

    I have played HL1 recently. And it ia so far the only fps were granades andc4 charges are actually useful.

    I dislike the marine encounters because they easily overpower you if you are at low hip or even full. Just was too difficult in my oppinion

      that's why you need to play smart. if you're at full HP n you're not completely out of ammo you can make it through any encounter

      @@jeed4119 If you use weapons effectively and exploit the enemies' main weakness: the inability to attack while moving, you can do pretty much anything. Explosives in this game are severely underrated. Grenades force marines to move, tripmines cut of their escape and are satisfying as hell, satchel charges pack a punch that you decide when to use, and snarks can screw up their formation faster than they fuck you up.

      Grenades will also force marines to undergo a “brace for impact” animation, allowing for you to attack while they helplessly wait until the animation is over before they can resume firing at you. That is assuming the blast didn’t already kill them.

    On a first playthrough the player is forced into a different playstyle, which is a lot less exciting. It can get messy as hell. I would not call it very well made in this aspect.

      I think the introductory chapter while hard in some aspects, does a great job at showing how marines figth, and by the time the player is in Surface Tension its very probable they've learned some tricks and tactics to figth the grunts in a more exiting way
