    Such a pleasure to have more Impi here and now and the promise of things to come! Long form or not, it was a treat to sit with this story (and how long was this editing marathon?) straight through to the end. So poignant to see your (and our) old friend at the end...with the coming of new adventures there... A proper present for this Christmas season of 2021.

It took me a LONG time 😂 especially between sailing trips so it's difficult to say exactly how many hours but Ana was pestering me to get it out before Christmas because she mostly does InstaGram and a lot of folks were encouraging her to encourage me 😉

    We are camping at Teewah and spending time at Double Island. As a sailer I am always interested in other boats so I paddled out in the anchorage to look at the boats moored there. Saw Jadean with Cape Town port of origin and landed up having a long chat to them. They asked me if I subscribed to your channel which I do now! We left SA in 94 and live on the Gold Coast. We keep our little 8 m sailboat on a berth at Runaway Bay and actually Evolution sails have done some work for me too. Enjoyed this video and hope to see more.

      We love Barry and Kim Boswell on Cat Jadean - more genuine and humble people one wouldn’t find. Recently we spent some time with them at Lady Musgrave Island and had a terrific dive with Manta Rays and more - I hope you guys can get there if you haven’t done that 👍
      Your 8m sailboat sounds fun and actually we’ve hung out in that neck of the woods for a long time over the years so perhaps will get to meet you there when next down on the Goldcoast 🍻
      We are slow in getting videos out mostly because my computer skills are somewhat lacking 😂 but we do enjoy the engagement it brings with so many amazing people and will keep doing them over time so thanks for subbing here and sharing a bit of your life too👍
      Cheers 🥂

    Long time no hear, glad to see your doing OK. With all of the boat repairs, and upgrades I was curious as to whether the Lagoon 440s have the same bulkhead issues that the 4500 and some other boats are having. Have you seen David Shis channel where he found that some of the bulkheads weren't even attached under the decks. What is your take on the situation?
    Safe travels

    • @CatamaranImpi
      @CatamaranImpi  2 года назад +1

      Hey thanks so much.
      Regarding bulkheads - the 450 had a particularly bad run but last week I was very interested to visit a friend on his 450 when we pulled into the marina at Gladstone. He'd removed the panel to show me the access to his bulkhead which was still in pristine condition and not built in three sections like many others that have failed. Instead his was one section and glassed all the way up which I found interesting. So I'm not an expert in 450's but it did make me wonder if some were built differently to others 💁
      As you may know our Lagoon 440 is not our first catamaran (Ana came into my life owning a Catana 471C) and after purchasing our 440 knowing we were going to do heavy cruising one of the first projects we did was to strengthen the outer sections of the bulkhead for long term stability. It turns out it may have been one of our best decisions because we've been is some incredibly nasty seas.
      What happens on various brands of catamarans depending on how heavily they are sailed, is that the under side of the vessel above the water and between the hulls (bridge deck) is subject to slamming as waves get trapped there and the result is that the floor flexes ahead of and behind hard points, so even ion a Bulkhead is well built in there, the flexing action to either side causes delimitation. For this reason on Impi, we've built ribs internally to make sure the flex is not going to impact on structure.
      Perhaps I'm a stickler for things on boats so I've maybe gone a bit overboard on mods but then again this is because I intended our boat to sail off the beaten track.
      The Lagoon 440 the way we've kitted her out has proved to be one tough little boat, but at the end of the day the sea is master and we can never say it won't claim us some day - hence total respect for the sea and I am continuously going through everything and we do stop the boat from time to time to effect maintenance projects to Impi. This has been key to us having relatively 'issue free' sailing across the oceans and hassle free anchorages off the islands.
      I do think it's good that sailing folks highlight issues and suppliers need to attend to these - well, ultimately the owner should be prepared to make his boat totally safe for the conditions he wishes to embark on.
      What boat would we buy next - hmmm - well, Lagoon would certainly still be on our list to check out - we love how they kit out their boats but of course as with any brand of boat we are the people to 'look under the hood'. Ana and I were on a mates new cat recently - NOT Lagoon - frightening to see how parts of that boat were coming apart and the fight they had to go through with the manufacturer so I think buyers need to be on their 'A Game' when making a purchase - go through that new boat to detail before signing off on it.
      I don't think Lagoon can afford to screw up on another model after the 450 fiasco so lets hope the future models like the Lagoon 51 are going to have the strongest bulkheads out there 👍
      Cheers

    Hi, we own a 2005 L440 and was told you reinforced your bulkheads prior to starting your circumnavigation. Do you have any video or blog postings regarding what you did? Thanks and Fair winds to you!

    • @CatamaranImpi
      @CatamaranImpi  2 года назад +1

      Hi 👋
      Sorry for the delay response - we’ve just sailed back to proper internet after a great time in Lady Musgrave where it’s limited .
      Yes, the Lagoon 440 is built like a tank and doesn’t have the issues the 450 does however Lagoon did glass the main bulkhead from mid hull to mid hull but did not follow through on the outer sides which is ‘bonded’ so when we purchased the boat new we opted to glass the outer sides in too.
      On earlier models such as yours I’d suggest looking at the upper section above the water tank (under the mast ) too.
      You can see our blog at : catamaranimpi.com/2020/07/28/how-to-upgrade-the-bulkhead-on-a-lagoon-440/amp/
      I hope this helps - Lagoon 440 is an amazing craft but we have done mods to the boat to make a truly tough world cruiser
      Cheers 🍻
      Brent and Ana
