- Polishing fuel, transferring fuel and treating fuel is important on boats.
It's especially important when visiting countries such as Indonesia where one should have the ability to polish and treat diesel fuel.
NOTE: We are NOT SPONSORED by anyone for any products mentioned.
Many folks ask us how we did this and I'm hoping this video will show those how we managed to do this at a FRACTION OF THE COST of most systems whilst proving to be a VERY EFFICIENT way of treating fuel.

Indonesia was indeed interesting especially when we got turned around in West Sumatra and had to sail back across it in Covid times.
We have planes spewing out jet streams followed by a weather front and a ship lost at sea but far from us, a near miss of an erupting volcano and more 😂
As for the Tasmania Devil waves 🤣 - may head down that way again next year if we stay longer … but that’s if the authorities aren’t sick of us being here 😉

Brent, Excellent tutorial on a very simple fuel managemnt and polishing system. May I politely suggest a few simple improvements, (based on my experence as a sailor & commercial boat captain, etc)
1) Install the transfer pump up the other way to protect exposed wiring from being flooded by water ingress, - may need an external switch to facilitate easy use.
2) Put plastic caps on the upward facing (installed) transfer connectors, to ensure water and dirt are not ingested into the system.
3) Install a sight glass to ensure flow is as expected.

I am just putting together a polisher for our boat with the raccor. The issue we had was globules of diesel bug blocking the pick up pipe stopping the engine before they even reached the filter.

Nice video Brent. I bought new generation filters manufactured in RSA that have a Teflon cover over the main filter which repels water as well.

Great idea and set up for preventative maintenance. I just had our tank polished and part of the service inculdes flushing the tank with a presurised wand that spays the diesle throughtout the tank, that's the only thing missing in this process, but with good PM, the flush will never be needed. The previous owner of our boat had new digital meter installed for fuel level and they cut a new a hole into the tank but never cleaned said tank after the new hole was cut in, so we of course had a ton of alluminun chavings inside our tank that had to be removed with a flush...some people should not own boats...lol

Yes it’s so true that the drilling or cutting of holes in tanks leaves a residue that gets sucked up and packed onto the suction tube strainer. I had to remove that too and clean it up .

This is true actually - the parts need to be properly secured and for sure, if wants to have a special section manufactured without all the joints this is very possible . Because we were in Cairns and leaving for Indo it was easiest just to go ahead and buy ‘off the shelf items’ but not a bad idea to have a manifold machined. Otherwise making sure all the joints are nicely secured and sealed is important 🙌

Well done Brent, a simple & effective system. Far cheaper than running a multiplate seperator. Those Mr. Funnel style funnels work exceptionally well. We used them in the field when fuelling aircraft from drums, was surprising how much muck & moisture they would catch. Hope to catch up one day soon!

Hi Brent great video as usual! I'm heading up to Indo at the end of this season so very timely. Can you please detail how the polishing/transfer fuel lines are connected to the boats fuel tanks? Did you just put a T section on the line feeding from the tank to the primary filter. BTW on my L450 I installed Separ primary filters and have never had a fuel problem - but I know how risky the fuel in Indo can be.- thanks again for the practical help and inspiration George SC Cabana

I do show the pump in the video but I guess easily overlooked :
It’s a Johnson F3B-19 max 21 l/min self priming flexible impeller pump mounted on a DC motor
Be sure to ask for the reversible switch to be included and it may not be a bad idea to carry a few spare impellers and Mount the pump like I did so removing the pump plate to inspect the impeller is really easy to do.

great video, very educational, could you please provide any further details you have re polishing? Do you just use mr Funnel or do you have any other finer filters to go through as well which other polishing systems use. We have had frequent problems in the med with bad fuel/ bacterial growth, especially during the off season.

We just use Mr Funnel as a means to separate the gunk from what the usual filters can cope with and carry spare filters.
You could add additional filters in line however we’ve found the boat copes really well with passing the fuel through Mr Funnel and then through the Parker / Racor style water diesel separators. They are an upgrade to the standard Yanmar style filters . So another way of doing this would be to put in Racor filter units that you can pass diesel through as a means of polishing.
Bacterial growth in fuel as well as water contamination can happen at the source of supply where fuel is old or been stored in tanks not full allowing condensation to happen. It can also happen in your boat if diesel is left stagnant for too long and the tanks are not totally full which reduces water condensation .
Additives like Fuel Doctor breaks the bacterial growth down and gets rid of the water content.
Here is a cut and paste I did from the fuel doctor site that explains how this is achieved - I’m sure it will be similar for all brands
HOW IT WORKS: Initially Fuel Doctor will scavenge free water (condensation) from tank internals into a sub-micronic emulsion, allowing the moisture to pass through the combustion process with no detrimental effects to fuel pumps, injectors or oxygen sensors (Bosch.com.au).
Microbial material is broken down into sub-micronic particles again passing through the combustion process without the inconvenience of blocked or restricted filters.
Gums and varnishes are dissolved from tank internals, lines, pumps, carburettors, injectors and importantly valve faces.
During combustion, microscopic amounts of gums and varnish attach themselves to injectors and valve faces. Vehicles that have travelled in excess of 100,000 kilometres will suffer a build up of gum and varnish. The remnants of the occasional tank of off-spec fuel will result in improper valve seating, robbing a nominal amount of compression from the cylinder. This decreases combustion efficiency and increases the amount of unburnt fuel. Unburnt fuel compounds the lacquering effect on valve faces and injectors. Fuel Doctor will remove these deposits, restoring power, economy and decreasing the emissions of unburnt fuel.

Thank you for sharing your expertise and experience with us! After seeing several examples of semi- and fully-automated fuel polishing systems at boat shows, I can see why you went this route. I have to admit I am somewhat (but happily) surprised the single 30 micron Mr. Funnel filter is sufficient to polish your fuel. I have seen several other examples of DIY polishing systems but they have all used additional dual (or even 3) Racor filters of successively finer pores (e.g., 30, then 10, then 5 micron). I would love to hear from others as to whether a 30 micron filter is sufficient in all areas of the world.

For sure it would be nice to hear other comments about this - I’m always eager to learn.
When I did my time with Caterpillar we learnt that 30 microns is good as a primary filter in the system on diesels so I guess when we say (polish ) we are not ‘strictly polishing’ - to 5 microns etc. but we are getting the poor grade diesel to a satisfactory primary filter condition to which the secondary filters in the system will cope .
So on Impi we make sure anything above 30 microns is separated and then we have a 20 micron filter in the diesel water separator unit and a Yanmar filter (10) on the engine.
Of course the finer you polish fuel the more life you can get out of your ‘usual engine filters’ but diesel engine filters are designed to run the period with a primary of 30 anyhow.
The Mr Funnel has a filter performance of 50 microns according to the manufacturers technical support. They also did not know if it removed diesel bug slime. So it seems that it would be adequate for removing water and relatively big particles prior to real polishing down to the recommended micron spec of your marine diesel filter, which is around 2 to 5 microns.

Brent, the quick connect fittings are just the standard air compressor hose fittings, correct?
I’ve got my Johnson pump and Mr. Funnel and just need to get the fittings and hose. Also the hose is the standard food grade clear flexible hose, correct.

Brett, nice video. I went to the Mr. Funnel website and no mention of the micron size of filtration. Question, I can see the funnel being a great feature for putting fuel into your tanks. But for polishing, couldn't you just take an extra one of those Parker filter units you showed and use that connected to your pump manifold ? (Pulling fuel from the tank fo choice, through the Parker filter and then back out the hose to the tank fill port?

Yes you make a good point and the filter is at 30 microns. One could put a bunch of those filters in series but it doesn’t take long in Indonesia before they are totally blocked so Mr Funnel gets rid of the main stuff (and we separated a lot of it ) and one then has less filters to carry, no filters except the usual going to land fill sites etc.
We had quite a few boats in Indo who got stuck without being able to get filters after trying to polish fuel that way. We literally went through one filter as part of our regular service intervals. I’m sure there’s many ways of doing this bit we do like the self cleaning part of Mr. funnel

Ps - I was actually writing to you on messenger to give more details why we didn’t go that route, but perhaps people here may want to see the comments too.
Another thing with the standard style Racor filters is they are ‘directional ‘ and since we polish in both directions they have to be plumbed with a cross over valve to run the fluid in multiple directions . You can buy a set up like this but it’s very expensive . So if you set it up with a bunch of filters and can swap over the lines using quick couplings that would be a way to do it too and obviously one would need to plan for the additional line to swap across sides.
In the end there’s no quick fix unfortunately and it all comes down to cost .
I helped another boat set up a similar system to ours and more basic by leaving out the T fittings. So where the two tank inputs are there is a quick coupling on each end . It’s cheaper not having the additional fittings but not as convenient. 👌

Yes the residual goes into sealed glass jars and disposed of in the next marina equipped with recycling tanks . Very good question and I hope everyone does this otherwise it defeats the whole advantage of not having to dump filters into landfill sites ✨🙌

the bigger aperture netting allows the water to get through since most slamming on catamarans starts right there at the netting. We once placed a camera under the boat and I realized from that our boat was taking a huge amount of impact right at the netting so we purchased larger aperture netting and wow A what a difference that makes 🙌👍
