Liszt - Apparition No. 1, S155 (Vlassenko)

An intense expressionistic quasi-improvisation which blends ornamented operatic Italianate melody, experimental notational gestures and harmonic audacity to evoke an oneiric world where sensations and images blur into one another indistinctly. Rightly characterised by Busoni as "romantic, emotional, philosophical, and possessing that breath of Nature which in art is achieved so rarely and with such difficulty", the Apparitions (especially the first) can confound the authentic voice of Liszt with that of his contemporaries.

Idiots tend to show their stupidity when presented with profound genius. Liszt was and shall be the greatest pianist who ever walked. He didn't just experiment or invent, he reached into the guts of both the instrument and the performer and said let's see what we're both made of

The apparitions by liszt just never fails to enchant me and at the same time sends chills down my spine because of how good they are and sublime, they should be one of liszt's most well known pieces!

@@turekihlstedt1549 Yes, it’s truly amazing what he’s accomplished. Personally, I’d be happy just with learning all my favorite Liszt repertoire (which consists mostly of extremely untouchable pieces for amateurs like me or even for most serious pianists.) I study Liszt about 4-8 hours a day. Usually reading about his history and the people around him, and of course all the while analyzing his music. I don’t claim to know everything about Liszt as someone Leslie Howard.. but it’s in my bucket list to know pretty much anything you’d want to know about him. Him and Rachmaninov, of course.

in my opinion, the Chopin influence is strong here

Generally, both composers loved and were influenced by Italian bel canto, hence the partial similarity between the works of those two. The only considerable influence on Liszt by Chopin is after the latter’s death (ec the early version of Liszt’s bercause most obviously; Liszt was working on some biography/tribute of sorts I think).
But the Apparitions (in harmony and stylistic idiosyncracy) are as Lisztian as it gets.
