Discussion about tackling football riots in Morocco: police union wants to be able to intervene hard, management prefers to engage in conversation.
There is open discussion within the police about the best way to prevent riots after matches of the Moroccan national team. The ACP trade union would like to see faster action, with tear gas and water cannons. But many officers on the street, supported by their police officers, prefer to talk. They like the attitude of the union.
It remained much quieter in many Dutch cities last night than in recent weeks after matches in Morocco.
Police still in action after losing Morocco, dead in riots in France
Morocco lost the semi-final of the World Cup against France last night. In recent weeks, the victories of the Moroccan national team often led to riots in which the police had to intervene.
In many Dutch cities, many disappointed fans took to the streets last night and set off fireworks. It remained quiet in most places, but by midnight the police had to intervene here and there.
Confrontation with police
In the Osdorp district of Amsterdam, more than a hundred people sought confrontation with the police, a spokesperson reports to the ANP news agency. That is why an emergency order was issued around the area of Tussen Meer.
One hundred arrests in Brussels
Things went wrong in Brussels and the police deployed a water cannon and tear gas. Hundreds of people were arrested there after a group confronted police.
Meanwhile, it was also restless in several French cities. In Lyon, a group of far-right hooligans threw stones and fireworks at the police in the center of the city. They harassed people waving Moroccan flags.
Party in Paris
The festive atmosphere of earlier in the evening has also changed in Paris. On the Champs-Élysées, rioters attacked riot police with fireworks.
Quiet in The Hague and Utrecht
In The Hague, it has remained quiet in the streets after Morocco's World Cup loss, a police spokesperson reported. Two people have been arrested, including for setting off heavy fireworks. But otherwise it was a lot calmer 'than after the last games'.
