Creating a business model that is still emulated by modern mercenary groups today.
Their sophistication and ability to diversify the business are some of the reasons they succeeded where others failed.
Their military expertise and success was unquestioned. It was the only private company that fielded an integrated, battalion-size force ending conflicts where UN peacekeepers failed.
EO was so efficient they freaked out governments all over the world.

It seems to me that each time the unit was asked to withdraw in favour of UN Peacekeepers. ...it's simply because they were in conflict with Western interests....! I must applaud them for their wittineness ....seen in securing various lucrative deals....☺

@@slymarbo4046 Blackwater didn't commit mass crimes or fail in their objectives. They were contracted by the US Department of State and followed directions from said department. As with EO, they succeeded so well that they made a name for themselves.
My mentor when I worked in the private intelligence arena was a former employee of EO. The stories he told me are amazing. Countries truly feared them and for good reason.

Basically Executive Outcomes would come in at the behest of nations embroiled in civil wars and desperate for help. EO would save those governments, train their troops and develop resources. But then then the corrupt UN would demand they get kicked out and then civil war would break out again. The UN is a bane to African countries.
Executive outcomes just sounds so cool and they seem like the people you hire to get a job done.

@@Ozymandias83. Organisations like that need an ambiguous sounding company name to fly under the radar. I worked for GEO, which stands for Global Expertise in Outsourcing, a much softer name than Australasian Correctional Management which is what they were named previously.
They're cold bastards, they have a terrible reputation for undermining the states they work for and prioritising the protection of private assets over their government clients

@@sebleonard8273 God, the amount of contacts and acquaintances my father had from his days as a merc allowed him to start up and successfully make a business company. Felt really weird to see several guys with different nationalities call or visit him every week or so.

@@Joshua_N-A The majority of the management were Rhodesian. The founder was a South African and took advantage of the military/counter insurgency experience the Rhodesians had from the bush war and hired them.

Dad worked security for a Company in the UK, private agency that secured and transferred VIP's, foreign dignitaries, bounced Annabels Club etc.. couple of former Executive Outcomes guys among them, couple of Bushwars veterans.. really genuinely nice guys, great stories round the dinner table!

It looks like the EO was doing a good job but later will be deposed by some foreign interest resulting in weak security. UN has not done well really in a lot of conflicts.

I met one of these guy's, he was a relative of a guy I worked with. Horrible, horrible man he was, ignorant, mega racist and very intimidating ( I was a kid him a lump of a man ) but from what I gatherd from getting to know that family he was a hell of fighter, the bush warrior they called him.

Great book called Blood Song about Executive Outcomes. Incredible what they pulled off. Even an amphibious assault against a defended beach head. Impressive stuff.

I would recommend reading Executive Outcomes: Against All Odds by Eeben Barlow. And if you want to actually own a copy, it might be worth it to get it from South Africa instead of paying stupid prices stateside.

The UN causes more problems than solutions. If you guys are interested in the Sierra Leone conflict I highly recommend "Gunship Ace" by a pilot named Neall Ellis who co-wrote his book and experience serving within his services as well as Executive Outcomes.
Too afraid to take risks or Rules of Engagement? I don't think the oppossition care to have RoE. They could use RoE against the UN troops.

So after decolonization, world powers didn't want to directly intervene in the problems that arose as a result of the ensuing power vacuums, only providing aid as part of proxy wars during the Cold War just to cut off aid again when the Iron Curtain fell.
Paramilitary groups now armed with Soviet weapons were free to seize power for their leaders du jour, and the UN, fielding strongly-worded letters and peacekeepers who aren't allowed to fight, were unable to settle the instability.
Yet somehow it's morally reprehensible for soldiers to fight for profit on behalf of legitimate governments when the US and USSR had in the last decades been fighting over oil fields and mines and whose meddling in African affairs set the stage for all of this instability. That's a 25 megaton double standard.

Your comment shows that you have no background info but still commenting. EO’s personal were former special forces and others. I doubt that a European or American army would have been that successfully with the limited equipment they had. So please, comment on things you have knowledge on.

I had the honour of knowing Rafał Gan-Ganowicz, who as orphan teenager fled communist-occupied Poland after WW2 and then participated in several wars in Africa as a mercenary, however his motivation wasn't material. By participating in wars against communists, he waged his private war against the ideology that ruined what was left of his childhood and enslaved his country. He came back to Poland in late 1990s and died in 2002. He wrote a book "Kondotierzy" ("Condottieres") where he focused on his experiences from his mercenary years.

Africa would thrive with them instead of full fledge armies. Armies are more expensive.
Also, a death of a soldier is a "tragedy" at least as far as western governments are concerned. The death of a mercenary is simply one less paycheck to write.

I watched a documentary out merc years ago. EO was in it and the way they talked about them. It was a young company. Ot hadn't been around that long. And I habe heard of Bob and how mean he was in the field.

The paras no the special forces were ever dismantled. Only units formed in Namibia were dismantled, as they was no use for them anymore.
