- This video was shot in 1994 by James O'Mara for Shari Ulrich, Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes in support of the album UHF II. It was shot on Bowen Island on a hot summer day. The tune was written by Roy Forbes' and performed by Canada's "Supergroup", celebrating it's 28th anniversary in 2017. Though we're all busy with other projects we LOVE playing music together and expect to continue to do so for many years to come.

I just heard this on the CBC. I wept happy tears while driving and immediately searched for the song when I got home. The sweet melody is unlike any I have heard before. Magic.

The first time I heard this song I absolutely fell in love with it. The song, the lyrics, the musicians are all filled with joy. Everything about it is wonderful. The intro just sets you up and draws you in. Then you are hit with this amazing and unique vocal by Roy Forbes supported by the fantastic instrumentation and the mandolin. It all fits. Its that perfect song that you cannot imagine being performed by any other artists. The song not only uplifts the heart - it uplifts the sole!

Thank you Shari, for all the wonderful music, I am 71 now and still have the original Hometown Band Flying- but how could I have never heard this song by Roy Forbes or heard of him WOW! I have a lot of research and listening to do-

During stressful week of Kelowna area Forest Fires August 2023 / this song played on CBC Radio West FM 1 and lifted my heart and spirits. Need some more of UHF. I have seen in person Ms Ulrich and Bill Henderson perform. I like Roy Forbes voice. Thank you.

What a Voice! What a song - I felt my heart lifting - must play this again for #500
I wrote Roy awhile back to let him know I planned to sing this at my daughter's wedding reception. My son ended up joining me on mandolin, which was very nice. Roy was too gracious to ask me about royalties!

Heh heh - you'd probably have to bribe Roy. He's usually the foot dragger. And yes, it's the only video was made, though we shot "There Must Be" - just never edited it.

Oh WOW! I used to go and watch Bim when I lived in southern Alberta back in the late 70s. I fell in love with his Kid Full of Dreams album and only wish he would re-release it! So happy to have found this clip. I think I will also buy his mum album! Love him!

I started listening to you in the mid 70’s. I had moved from Thunder Bay to Banff then to Kaslo. I was introduced to the music of Pied Pumpkin. I continued to listen to you in the Hometown Band. Nice to see you are once again playing with Pied Pumpkin. God has given you the gift of musical talent. Thank you for sharing it.

Makes me feel so good inside......still after all the years
I discovered UHF via an excellent movie, "Bye, Bye Blues," which included the song, "When I Sing," sung by the lead character. It seemed to me a natural anthem for anyone for whom music is an essential element of life. I tracked it down to UHF and sent for the CD which came directly from Shari. UHF and "When I Sing" in particular are precious jewels in my treasure chest. Everyone should have their music! Info on the movie is in Wikipedia.

Sharon (Shari) Ulrich, (born 17 October 1951) is a Canadian musician-songwriter. She has won a Juno Award for "Most Promising Female Vocalist of the Year", and has acted as a television host, actor, film composer, and songwriting educator. As a multi-instrumentalist she plays violin, mandolin, guitar, piano and dulcimer.
Born in San Rafael, California, Ulrich moved to British Columbia in the early 1970s. With Rick Scott and Joe Mock, she created the Pied Pumkin String Ensemble, which first performed in 1973. Her break came when she was hired to tour with Valdy and his Hometown Band. Shortly afterward, she won a 1982 Juno Award for "Most Promising Female Vocalist" and received Juno nominations in the following two years for "Best Female Vocalist".
Ulrich has also written items for Sesame Street and composed theme music for several networks, including the CBC. She is also a member of the folk music group UHF with Bill Henderson (Chilliwack) and Roy Forbes.
In 2009, Ulrich joined Barney Bentall and Tom Taylor to release the album "Live" at Cates Hill.
Ulrich continues to perform solo (often accompanied by daughter Julia Graff on violin, piano, mandolin, guitar, accordion and vocals) and to occasionally tour with the Pied Pumkin, UHF, BTU and a newly formed bluegrass group "The High Bar Gang" with Barney Bentall, Colin Nairne, Wendy Bird, Angela Harris, Eric Reed, and Rob Becker. She lives on Bowen Island, British Columbia.
Her upcoming release "Everywhere I Go" was engineered and produced by her daughter Julia Graff, getting her masters in music in sound recording at McGill University.

This was a great trio. Saw UHF live in Sherwood Park back in the day. I might even still have the poster from this session. Love this song, and the album. Great cuts. The 2nd album was just as fine. Keep lightin' that fire!

@shariulrich I just purchased Fear of Flying from itunes...lol..and Almost Over night by Roy...and Crazy Old Moon...and a few others by Roy..and a few from Valdy and they are bringing back so many great memories. I grew up west of Calgary and never had the chance to see any of you live. Definatly my loss...please keep on posting here on youtube for us all!

I was on RUclips to see if I could find a video of "When I Sing" which is like an anthem to me. Didn't find that one, unfortunately, but I'm glad to find this too. Shari, it's so nice to see your posts, and to know that you are still performing together from time to time. I am a latecomer fan, but I can't say enough about how much I like your music together. I've been working on an acappella version of "When I Sing" - hoping to find some folks to perform it with :-)

What a fun video and song. Roy's Mince Meat tart oddly enough brought to this song through various links around the web. From here to outside music ( who unfortunately couldn't get hard copies in a timely fashion) so off to CD Baby and I downloaded the album. Enjoying it immensely. It would be great if you get the other footage you mentioned edited and posted; or perhaps digitize it and put it out there and see how people would put it together for you and repost.
No Ulrichs from my family in Saskatoon I'm afraid. I came from the US so that's where all my family is. My hometown is San Rafael California. Kind of a long way from Saskatoon.
