THE most under rated singer/songwriter of our generation. I've see her many, many times since I first saw her in the "Soft Rock Cafe" in Vancouver in the early '80's. I saw her a few weeks ago in Nanaimo, BC and she is still getting better with every performance. If you hear she is performing near you.....GO SEE HER!
When Valdy toured with the Hometown Band and came through North Battleford, I was asked to help load their gear into our school auditorium and got to watch Shari and the entire band from the wings. It was my first concert at 15 years old! I had the pleasure of receiving her beautiful smile and a thank you as they walked off stage after the show and I'll never be able to thank you enough in return for that night! A timeless voice and song, truly inspiring.
I was a DJ and Station Manager at Radio McGill in Montreal in 1977-1978. I insisted on playing this simply spectacular demonstration of musicality and vocal prowess in every show I did. I was always astonished by Shari's vocal power and control - and have gone to great pains over the years to collect numerous pristine LP's of the Hometown Band album of the same name. Of course, now with Spotify, it's joyous to add it to playlists -- but seeing the video, of the period, transports me effortlessly back to a time I am so nostalgic about. I was proud to play this song, and most appreciative of this video!
Shari, this is my favourite song that I've heard you sing. It still gives me goosebumps. Thank you for this. I still don't know how you aren't Canada's Sweetheart. You are to me and my friends. I hope you are well and happy.
Shari. Haven't heard this song and years. Gives me goose bumps. Your voice is so magical to me and you hit the notes so effortlessly. Wow. Amazing. I first heard you when I was a teenager. I loved you then and still do. Thanks for sharing your incredible talent with us.
I just heard this old song from a very young woman. You are amazing. You were amazing. I am full of admiration and respect for you! Thanks for this early song and all the amazing songs ever since. ❤❤❤
I heard Valdy and the Hometown Band perform in a small venue at Mercer University, Macon Georgia in 1976. Valdy wore a shirt that stated "Disco Sucks". I was a freshman and a guitar player. The performance shaped my musical trajectory--to see such skill and talent, and hear songs with meaning. Much gratitude!
2009! I followed you guys around the Kootenays way back, doing fotos... This song was SO gorgious! Pied Pumkin was perfect 'in time and place.' And your voice touches me still...
This song is one of three or four tunes that immediately transport me back to my childhood growing up in Edmonton...And interestingly, all are by Canadian bands: Wildflower by Skylark, Sweet City Woman by The Stampeders, and The Dream Never Dies by The Cooper Brothers...all classics. But none of them can hold a candle to this one...It is as good now as it was the first time I heard it!!!
2 years later I echo the same comments. Totally under rated. Shari is up there with the greats. The whole band played with a skill and sensitivity that is uncommon. I loved their albums and the production quality was leading edge.
I was at one of these concerts. Not sure if it was this one. Shari blew my mind back then and her voice and how she sings"Flying" STILL give me goosebumps. Was real lucky to see her in concert in Calgary in early February before this coronavirus hit. She still got it baby!!!
Love it. The first concert I ever attended was early 1977 when I saw Valdy and The Hometown Band at Unchagah Hall in my home town of Dawson Creek BC. Loved that concert also.
All of your comments are SO wonderful!! If I ever need affirmation that it's all been worth it, I'll just come here! And TheEleleth, I don't think you need to worry too much about selling out to be a Madonna sex kitten! I think that ship has sailed a LONG time ago. I sure do love doing what I do, and I would like to reach a wider audience while I can still move! Thanks to you all for your wonderful support.
I remember I had to special order this album because the music shops in town here never heard of the Home Town Band, but once they did because I let them listen to my tape when I got it in, they orders many more... 1977 I still love this song Shari
Have always loved your voice and your songs Shari. Saw you at Folk Fest 3 years ago in the chapel when you dumped your purse out for a guitar pick. ! Too funny, and then outside the next day. You were the highlight of the fest. for me. Love your old stuff and the newer cd with your daughter.
Finding this video is such a pleasure! I saw the band in 1977 at Syracuse University with my boyfriend and never forgot your music. We lost the album in a flood some years later and could never find it again. This brings so many wonderful memories back. We LOVED you then and still do.
Aw….thanks so much Faye! Gosh, I remember that show in Syracuse! Just so you know, I recently released both albums on CD by getting the masters from the vault at Universal. So you can have the albums in permanent form - either through my website, cdbaby or iTunes. Great memories for me too!
Well it was a life time ago, at the Uni of Alberta in Edmonton and Pied Pumkin played on a wonderful night. I bought every album you had available. In 1979 I moved to Tasmania Australia and still find, in 2022, your music to be as hauntingly beautiful as it was in that tiny citadel on campus all those years ago. Big hug to you across the globe Shari.
Clearly one of the greatest songs of the 70s... takes me right back to Saltspring Island. Sincere thanks, Shari- for uploading these rare clips, and to allow so many of us fans to smile again and remember the good things in life.
I saw Shari and the Hometown band in Prince George in a place called Vanier Hall around this time with my older brother. It is still after all this time , one of the best most memorable concerts I have been to. A Goddess. Goosepimlpes and watery eyes now everytime I hear this.
I had been a fan for years, but finally got a chance to see Shari live in Vancouver at one the the Expo '86 venues. Shari did a house concert at a friend's place on Vancouver Island a while ago and I wished I could have been there....Looking forward to seeing one of the upcoming Alberta shows.
Loved this in the 70's, one of my favorite..... thank you Sherri & the rest of the Hometown band.... you were fantastic... & even now, I still listen to you!!
Just went to Valdy concert tonite and came across some of Shari's songs...Remember watching them all down at the Fulford Hall....wow what a great memory.:)
Shari, you are the personification of love and beauty as found in song. A hero to music lovers of this era and this song. Be proud. You contributed in a time when there wasn't any Canadian music coming up the pipe before you. I love you sweet girl, you're a great pal and an embodiment of elegance, class and beauty. Love ya, Always have, always will - an' now my wife loves you with the same intensity that I did. You did it, gurrrrl! so proud of you!
Found the Hometown band record at Ameoba in LA and bought it because i was very attracted to you on the front and back cover.. and now I am wearing it out .. SO GOOD!!!! You are an amazing vocalist Shari..
Shari... I wondered how I'd ever be able to say it all and now I don't have to ...sadtunes has spoken for many of us...your 'Flying' album touched me more deeply than most...Robbie's keyboard work , Geoff's drumming...Claire...on and on. Thanx again!
one of the best musical memories of my life...campbell river community hall...in the mid 70's...valdi & the hometown band...i fell in love with this song & "mad larry"...still have the album! thank you for putting this on youtube!
I am so thrilled to find this beautiful song on youtube! I'm so thrilled to hear Shari's voice again...I have all those Hometown Band Albums and remember soaring on the perfect pitch of her voice in the brilliant accoustics of Old Massey Hall in Toronto....Thank you so much for this....I find it inspired and inspiring!
There was a time,(not long ago..maybe 1978 or so)..that I thought this was Fleetwood mac!!!!!....I thought it was their best tune.,and the earth was flat...lol... Now I know. Thanks for the beautiful music!!Love ya Shari
Shari, greetings from Powell River! I just wanted to let you know that I still enjoy your music and always wanted to bump into you and start singing "Oh Daddy" - I play that song every Father's Day which the song and I share the memories of my Dad (who also played the recorder) - my hero. Thank you for that Shari!!!
I was at the concert on Grouse Mountain. I loved Shari's vocals and also the chemistry with the high quality musicians in the band. The guitar work was excellent. I have no idea of why the Hometown Band albums are so hard to come by.
So so lovely to see you singing this. I had the album way back when and always loved it. Just recently bought this song on iTunes. Also love your verandah song with Henderson and the fabulous Roy.
..... Shari doing, as all ways , perfect pitch vocals ..... makes me wonder bout why major promoters didn't pick up on her back in the day .... great post and thanks ....
I find myself at this time in my life incredibly inspired by your music....which led me to this You Tube search. I woke up with the song 'Stand' running through my consciousness the other day.....I immediately put on the UHF album it is on and I understood. Thank you Shari for the inspiration you are a beautiful lady! Keep on keeping on!
Shari, You and the hometown band along with Valdy's "kids and grannies, cats and gators" Intro take me to a very happy place. Thanks for the memories in Toronto and before that at the sidetrack cafe in Edmonton and of course in the Slocan valley. Love ya. Jay
The very first time "our co-op" saw and heard Pied Pumpkin was at Simon Charlie's Festival of the Sun. Believe it: Sheri's voice is even better today and Pumpkin lyrics are still the very best. Now I listen to them on my daily walks on the Stanley Park sea wall. Aren't we lucky!!!
How could I Not leave a comment in +++ Favour of this song !!!! Beyond words peoples really, you have got to just face it sometimes. Go figure O.K.!!!???
Shari - this song ( and your voice ) some 30-odd years later is STILL one of most amazing things I've ever heard. This album is on my "desert island top 10" LP's - THANK YOU and Happy New Year!
I had this record when I lived in Montreal in the 80s.... was ecstatic to find out recently that it was available on CD.... just as good now... if not better!!!!!! Love it!
It was Austin Texas! At the Armadillo World Headquarters. Oh my dog...my memory actually worked! I should tell you all who are fans of the band and this song, that I just released both Hometown Band albums on CD - digitized directly from the original masters. You can order them directly form me on my website, or at CD Baby or iTunes. It's something I've been wanting to do for so many years, so I'm thrilled to be able to cross that one off the big "Someday" list. Merry Christmas all!
I had a wonderful evening sitting in the Armadillo’s beer garden back in 1980. The door to the inside was open & we drank & listened to JJ Cale in the warm Austin night air.
I did not know this song before watching this video but upon noticing that Shari herself uploaded it and checks in from time to time I thought I would take a minute to thank her for the songs I do know, namely "She Remembers", "Romeo", and especially "Oh, Daddy"...a song that still brings a tear and a smile. Thanks Shari!
Thank you for sharing this song. Many memories of my youth and playing this in guitar class in Elementary school grade 7,. It takes me right back. I'm sharing it today with our "Vancouver Music Nerds" Facebook Group. Thanks Shari :)
Shari thank you so much for posting this. I have loved this song for ever. It has meant a great deal to me and to many people everywhere. This is one of the greatest tunes of all time. This evening I saw you on a TV program promoting your new album and I cannot wait to buy it. I wish you all the best and much continued success, Paul.
Hi Shari, just played the album again this morning, with all the shit that is happening in our fragile world, thank you, it makes me believe. Thanks again for your signed copy. Love and Peace.
What a delight! I'm so glad I found this. I never got to see the Hometown Band in concert, though I've been a fan since first heard them back in the mid-seventies. I've never stopped listening to both albums. A few years back I even meticulously converted the LPs to CD and now it's regularly played on my iPod. Getting to see this live footage was absolutely precious. I hope there is some more footage that can be posted. Can't wait to get my hands on the new CD Shari.
Just stumbled on this while looking around. Wow, it does bring back memories. I lived on Hornby Island in the Shari, Scott and Mock days; was involved with the BC Arts Caravan (1975) when you played at Bear Creek as Pied Pumpkin and was always amazed at the clarity and beauty of your voice and the combined musical talent of whatever group you were a part of. Thank you so much for all your music.
@PeterVred I'm even more aware of it now than I was then. I remember recording the song and George Martin coming in to the studio and listening to the mix. The engineer just about fainted. Amazing to think it's 33 years old. (Wish I was too!)
I was at UBC in about '78 and went to a concert in some little bar on fourth avenue where I sat about 10 ft from you doing your own stuff...absolutely mesmerizing :).
It was 1976 and Valdy & The Hometown band was performing at The Center of the Arts in Regina Saskatchewan. After introducing Shari, she stepped up to the microphone and quietly announced "I'm battling a bit cold this evening, but we'll give it a try." She stunned all of us with her inspiring performance of Flying that evening, and I've been a fan ever since. Now 44 years later, what a joy to hear her sing again. Much love Shari.
Heard the song "EVERY ROAD" by sheer coincidence yesterday. Had no idea who Shari Ulrich was. But all of a sudden I thought this amazing voice sounded just like the girls on my HOMETOWN Band record which kept me strong and sane during a divorce & custody battle back in 78. I am thrilled to know that you are still singing and will most certainly look out for your new CD. So glad to have "found" you!!!
First heard the Hometown Band at St Clair College in Windsor Ont. Valdy was there also as the main act. Always loved this song, must of been late 70's. I have to go and find the LP down stairs, Crasy Larry, was another cut from the LP.
Wow...Len! Way to make my day!!
Len you took the words right out of my mouth. Shari is a national treasure and we are lucky to have her.
Well I did tonight and it was wonderful ❤️
My favourite band and singer. Cheers from the Pacific West Coast of Canada.
When Valdy toured with the Hometown Band and came through North Battleford, I was asked to help load their gear into our school auditorium and got to watch Shari and the entire band from the wings. A timeless voice and song, truly inspiring.
A band that should have been much better known. Shari's voice is killer and the whole band is top notch.
Shari Ulrich you are one amazingly talented woman and I`ve loved you since the 70`s!!
Shari, this is my favourite song that I've heard you sing. It still gives me goosebumps. Thank you for this. I still don't know how you aren't Canada's Sweetheart. You are to me and my friends. I hope you are well and happy.
I'm going to pretend I'm Canada's Sweetheart anyway! Thanks Marie!

Love it. The first concert I ever attended was early 1977 when I saw Valdy and The Hometown Band at Unchagah Hall in my home town of Dawson Creek BC. Loved that concert also.
A Canadian classic. So much talent not nearly enough recognition. Sherri's voice is incredible. Thanks for memories.

I'm even more aware of it now than I was then. I remember recording the song and George Martin coming in to the studio and listening to the mix. The engineer just about fainted. Amazing to think it's 33 years old. (Wish I was too!)
i remeber when i first saw her sing this in the west kootenays...holds true to this day.
I was at UBC in about '78 and went to a concert in some little bar on fourth avenue where I sat about 10 ft from you doing your own stuff...absolutely mesmerizing :).
Awesome, saw you all perform on Grouse Mountain along with many other great artist back in the days that they held summer music fests up there.
My Favorite song of the Hometown Band . Lead vocals by Shari Ulrich and the amazing drums & harmonies by Geoff Eyre.
First heard the Hometown Band at St Clair College in Windsor Ont. Valdy was there also as the main act. Always loved this song, must of been late 70's. I have to go and find the LP down stairs, Crasy Larry, was another cut from the LP.
Love you, Shari. Miss you tons...
Shari, this is too cool!
Geff
Just found this tune on an old 45 record, one of my new favorites!
