Can I recommend the two films by the H P Lovecraft Historical Society....The Call Of Cthulhu and The Whisperer In Darkness. Both are in black and white, 1930s style, and very faithful to the stories. They’re not well known, but they’re brilliant. Also there’s a German version of The Colour Out Of Space called “Die Farbe” that’s pretty damn good too.
@@Fluffykeith Seen all three, I'm referring to Hollywood (btw, if you haven't checked 'em out, the Dark Adventure Radio Theatre Series is brilliant - they're on the HPLHS site- as well as various other places...)
No one has the proper imagination to do Cosmic style Lovecraft justice, even Del Toro had a TERRIBLE script to At the Mountains of Madness. Oddly the closest "Lovecraft" we ever got was John Carpenters' "In the Mouth of Madness" which, as we know, was basically a love letter to Lovecraft. Re-Animator was great but didn't deal with the cosmic horror aspect of Lovecraft so I don't count it.
Steven Rice “Dagon” was pretty decent, apart from the lead actor who overplayed everything. There’s also a movie called “”The Void” that has a good try at cosmic horror.
I remember my first time hearing that. I was overseas in my bunk with my head phones on at like 3 am. And was just taking out our the world for that whole song. And I cannot stop chasing that feeling
I recommend Metallica-To Live Is To Die (I'm currently in Portsmouth, Virginia). I just love it cause it makes you feel a multitude of emotions. Its a great listen for first timers to it. A true masterpiece.

Both this song and "The Call of Ktulu (Cthluhu)" were inspired by the band's love for the works of HP Lovecraft. His works dealt heavily with horrors beyond the realms of human understanding. In particular the Great Old One Cthulhu, who dwells dead but dreaming in the ancient city of R'lyeh under the sea with all manners of other monstrosities. They even paraphrase the most famous line from all of Lovecraft's works in this song: "That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons even death may die."
One of the nastiest songs ever. That face you made is exactly right! When I met Metallica years ago and Lars asked me what my favorite song was, I said that it changes daily but The Thing That Should Not Be was my favorite that day. Good memories :)
I must have played this album thousands of times when it came out. When I look back, to me other songs are the ones that first come to mind. Master of Puppets, Battery, Damage Inc, Welcome Home Sanitarium. But this song is just as great and is often overlooked. I'm glad you reacted to it.
My first time listening to Puppets (on cassette) I was lying on my bed listening and letting the first 2 songs soak in, then this played and after it finished I absolutely had to rewind and give it a 2nd listen before moving on with the album.

The tale by Lovecraft entitled The Shadow Over Innsmouth may well be the inspiration for Metallica’s The Thing That Should Not Be. But the phrase is actually used in At The Mountains Of Madness to describe a shoggoth: I use italics to quote highlight the phrase in the quotation below:
