The TRUTH behind METALLICA'S Most EVIL TRACK!!

- The TRUTH behind METALLICA'S Most EVIL TRACK is quite shocking. The song is called, "The Thing That Should Not Be." The lyrics are based on an HP Lovecraft novella called, "The Shadow over Innsmouth." According to the story, Innsmouth is a coastal town with a dark secret. The people in this town are hybrid humans, having interbred with "The Deep Ones" from a city beneath the sea. Terrifying creatures like the Cthulhu arise from the depths and raise havoc on the town inhabitants. This is one reason why James Hetfield writes amazing songs....it's all about a good storyline! The music accents the story with brooding chromaticism and evil line cliches using tritone intervals.
Go deeper into how to craft great songs with my courses below. It's about becoming more than just a guitar player....rise to Hetfield's 666 level and reach your FULL potential muhahaha!

Hello lord shred how art thou
Hey shred, do you have telegram? If not you have someone that is acting as you using telegram
for all the kids that know James from today....this is the badass that influenced 99% of the metal world in those days....what a fucking frontman
I think Harvester of Sorrow is their most dark and evil track. Those riffs. So heavy
Id say that or Thing That Should Not Be. Both are twisted.
No way. Nothing Else Matters is.
@@scipio8866 i think the title definitely goes to Harvester. Harvester is dealing with real life evil. Not fictional supernatural evil like The Thing That Should Not Be.
Is “Thing” dark? Yes. Heavy? Yes. Evil? I guess to a small extent, but the song doesn’t give off evil vibes.
Harvester is dark, heavy, and evil as fuck.
Kick ass song
@@bkn4 absolutely 💯 🤘
Harvester is also an epic evil tune.
I love when Jason barks “language of the mad”.
Agreed. I think its their most dark, evil and heavy track. It's my favorite song
I made my metal journey backwards. When I was in middle school I was heavy into Iron Maiden, which then got me into H.P. Lovecraft, which then got me into Metallica.
That’s really cool man I’m the opposite cos I’m young. Had no clue what who H.P. Love Craft was until looking into call of kthulu. I wonder how much they actually read or just liked the theme. Cos got damn I love that mystical dark magic spiritual theme Metallica took great inspiration from Maiden
Man, I would’ve absolutely loved your opinion/reaction to the S&M version, the orchestra really adds to it.
Personally I’m not crazy about the S&M stuff. I watched the S&M 2 concert and it was just too many things going on at once. I really like what Apocolyptica did years ago, but the full orchestra with the boys playing is distracting in my opinion.
@@annstevens6223 s and m 2 was not of the same quality. The first sounds great
@@annstevens6223 to me S&M two was not good at all. The first was amazing. The concert in a small concert hall. Just seems like the sound is huge compared to the second which to me has more of a tinny sound.
Just gotta love "The Thing That Should Not Be". One of my favourite songs from the....album I shall not name.
Kirk's solo is one of the most evil and eerie solos ever!
For real, and it's really complex. Phrygian Dominant mixed with harmonic minor and random chromatic notes. Pretty cool
@@Cosmefulanito2812 Yep. Harmonic minor. 👍🏼🤘🏼
sounds so much like dimebag!
Favorite Metallica song hands down
Yeah
This is the only track on MoP that I don't like
@@nickmeini6697 I like the intro of this song i dont like the whole song but it doesn't mean it's not good I am new in this genre so i will grow up on this song in future 👍
@@nickmeini6697 kinda same. it ain’t bad but it’s the song on mop that i don’t usually replay.
a lot of people don't like it because it repeats the same phrases to almost a comedic degree, but funnily enough, this is the song i replay the most. this is a very great track and heavy song.
all the riffs in this song are simply amazing. this song actually got me to read a book!
Everything was perfect, Het vocals, no sloppy Kirks solos, Lord Newsted, even Lars did it decently.
Amazing track, and this live version is the best I’m aware of. Heavy heavy heavy.
I think it's their best concert ever
The S&M version is pretty dope!
this is the gig where Hetfield starts turning into a warewolf during havester of sorrow.
Damn...hearing this song with the black album sound is more brutal
Got introduced to Metallica in 1987 in 7th grade. That same year I discovered Steven King. I listened to both sides of Puppets over and over and over while reading 'The Dead Zone', 'Rage', and 'The Long Walk'.
All three stories are kind of bleak, sinister, darker than anything I'd ever read before.
When I listen to The 'Thing That Could Not Be', I'm immediately transported back to 1987 reading those books; it is bleak, sinister, darker than any of the other tunes on the album. I didn't like it very much back then, but as an adult I can dig the riffs, theme, atmosphere.
Great tune.
Stephen King is THE man !!!! THE STAND is MY favorite book from Him and I've read them ALL .... A MUST READ.... AS IS "IT" and the " TOMMYKNOCKERS"
@@mikegallagher2732 Ha ha I read all three a few years later. Really enjoyed The Stand and Tommyknockers.
@@lostipod12 which has been your FAVORITE ???
@@mikegallagher2732 Definitely "Rage", "Dolan's Cadillac". I'm a sucker for revenge stories.
I'm Also a MASSIVE fan of how ANTHRAX was inspired by him as well !!!! AMONG THE LIVING is probably THE HEAVIEST EVER in its time...( ASIDE FROM S.O.D.)
HOLY SHIT..😳😳😳
Actually the lyrics are a medley of Lovecraft stories in total. 😊
THIS was THE Heaviest back in the day ... And i Fucking LOVE LOVE LOVE That MESA tone they had... BEST EVER..
The Dodgers Giants game just had a guitar rendition of the National Anthem. The guy probably needs to join your cult of music theory
I saw them on this tour in Lubbock, Texas 1989, I think it was January 20th, Queensryche opened for them.
I love the primus version of the song even more
6:00 it's a Fernandes Stratocaster copy in red. Apparently he routed out the space for the humbuckers and the Floyd Rose.
The Shadow Over Innsmouth is an amazing story.
Lovecraft stories are very good reads! It’s an entirely different beast in terms of horror.
reminds me of stephen king
@@ShredmasterScott is most probable king was influenced by HPL.
Check Primus cover! Is also heavy
Is it just me or is the key different than the studio recording? Seems like the guitars were tuned differently since this was the Justice for all tour.
On this tour they tuned their guitars to C# instead of D when playing this song.
@@arthurvesuvio Ok now I feel vindicated that my ears are not totally shot! 😂😂
The version played in 2019 barcelona is very heavy too.
The clean guitar parts during the verse intensify sinister mood
The dropped "D"tuning makes it sound super heavy, do they have separate guitars or do they just tune the top string down for that one song?
Each string is dropped down a whole step.
Dude it's Metallica. They each have a bunch separate guitars backstage tuned to variously and they just grab the one they need for the song they're playing. And backup guitars to those guitars. These guys don't mess with jacking around w their tuning keys on stage.
Yeah that’s why Kirks playing that red guitar that shred said he’d never seen before. That’s his d guitar
SHREEEED! New subscriber, really enjoying the channel. Fkn love your tone bro! What's your rig setup? #muahaha 🤘🤘
One of the best Metallica songs ever. The solo kicks ass too
Trust me the life recording of Metallica's welcome home sanitarium.... (early ones)
I saw the Justice tour at Red Rocks. Holy moly. They started this one, and wow. You could feel it.
Oh i remember that innsmouth thing, a quest in oblivion is a reference to it
I can literally hear Shred say the title of the video before I click on it. It makes me want to eat my horns. Muahahahaha
Innsmith is the correct pronounciation seemingly. 😅😂
I knew it, I thought it was about the movie "DAGON" Which is based on Lovecraft's work.
HP Lovecraft is some Evil stuff Lord Shred.
Id be eager to hear how reading it inspires your demonic ear.
Shred, what do you think about the new megadeth album
MOP is my one album I take if I am stranded on desert island, already a perfect record (imo) only way it could be better is if Fade To Black was on it 🤘🏻🥰I have read some H.P. Lovecraft stuff, it's super interesting
edit: you and your the "WAP juice" has me laughing like a mental patient every time 🤣
Chromatic 4th interval? Lol. I wish I was on the level to hear that and know what it is.
I feel like Serpents of the Light by Deicide is way more evil, could you give that one the same treatment Lord Shred?
The guitar is a strat made by the company that made his black and white one from the master of puppets tour
"Dave mustaine wrote this song" - Megadeth fans
Kirk is playing a red Jackson Soloist with black pick guard for this little diddy
How do you convert mp3 to mp4? Is it possible?
So many staches back then.
Great choice, my most 666 of men. I don’t know what a 4th or a Tritone is, but this song is evil AF and epic. I’m 42 and have enjoyed this tune immensely ever since I discovered it in 1991.
People often criticize Kirk for only using pentatonic, but this solo is phrygian dominant and 666 level metal
When you order Rob Zombie on Wish:
Regarding Lovecraft, The Call of Cthulu is an interesting read but it jumps the shark in some places too, gets kind of ridiculous, like when the guy drives his boat through the thing's head and craters it towards the end. Just wasn't necessary. I'm pretty sure this particular story is directly related to Cthulu, I think the cult this story is talking about is the one that worships Cthulu. I could be wrong.
Excellent explanation, Shred!
I thought it was about Godzilla
H.P. Lovecraft's ouvre is incredible! 669 grams of WAP protein preceding the evil!
that's a good beer. got me into IPA's
yeah that gig was the one in seattle right? this was my favourite Metallica gig.Starts with Blackened which is the best version, yeah this gig was the best of Metallica.
"WAPIAN FLATULENCE" .....lmfaooooo...... Ey man....the random words he writes above the videos... fucking hilarious
One of their most bad ass and greatest and heavy as fuck songs and that ending Is fuckin imortal!🤘💀💀
I love the way u break down music.. very insightful.. Rock on Shred.. Your the man...
Metallica before they went down the country metal road, nothing will ever beat the first 4 Metallica albums.
Agreed! I can’t split between any of them, but if someone held a gun to my head, it would probably be MOP.
It was all down hill after Justice, unfortunately.
My guy, the H.P. Lovecraft stories are pretty legit, but they have an older filter to them you have to read through. Like The Divine Comedy, it's riddled with old terms n makes it harder to read at first
Shred, you need to break down the heaviest song ever recorded - WARZONE by Slayer.
What is the wap juice thing all about 😂 only just found this channel
Definitely their heaviest song
This thing is brutal
Kirks playin a Fernandes strat
I read all these video titles in his voice and it’s hilarious
Badass riff tbh 🤘🏽
E-F#

A HUNDRED CHILDREN WATCH THE SEA
PRAY FOR FATHER
ROAMING FREEEEEEEEEEEEE
#1. Laguanitas is fucking mint. #2. This song is my absolute favorite from them. And C. (cunterpoint) Keep krushing it, Shred!
Best Papa Het vocals
Ok, now do "Dream No More"
The Cthulhu!!!!!
Angry Lion Hetfield is best Hetfield.
Honestly thought you were rob zombie 😂
I don’t know too much about guitars, but is Kirk playing a BC Rich maybe? That’s just a guess.
Actually second thought, I think it’s an ESP. don’t recall if he had his custom Karloff mummy esp back then.
@@annstevens6223 Jackson soloist
@@bandolierboy1908 cool, thanks!

"Good job Lars.."
.... and justice for all set saw that tour 4 times met at its best loved when lucy blew up and fell apart
Evil St flanger
If it is looked at in context. It really is about the lost soul. As I see it. It's not trying to create evil. It speaks of it. Just saying.
Shouldn't Metallica be giving the credits of this song to Dave mustaine??mustaine wrote the guitar part's.
Come on ahah
Fuck that’s evil
The song is better than the story...
Sounds like the nephilim
They should make a sweetener free and hops free beer for men who wanna gain testosterone, i like red wine best. I love this song because we tend to stick to outside of the unseen realm too much in life nowadays with all of this technology that hinders us down.
Truer word has never been spoken hashtag 2024 In madness we dwell, I hope they do finally shut off the cellular phones and free the people from this technological nightmare.
"the old ones" as you said there is 4 that have been bounded for a long time. this song is just repeating what the bible says about "the old ones" nothing new. just like their song creeping death. Now just to finish.......... those "old ones" will be released soon on earth when the end of the earth has come.
🤘
Newsted was a monster 🤘✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Don't.
Something about this song....maybe its the tuning. I just don't like this song. Especially the pace of the rest of the album, it just doesn't belong in MOP for me.... of course its subjective
The movie Dagon is based on Shadow Over Innsmouth. However, it's a bad movie.
nice
You look like Rob Zombie. lol
Totally off subject here Master shredder I know a chick right now that could smoke any other female guitarist in the world and pretty much you'd bow down to hers your Lord and Master
LOL not possessed just Metallica on Coke
The thing that should not be = jesus, but most of our
beloved bands hide this, cleverly: they're all teaching
Gnostic christianity, i.e., the seeking, and attainment,
of enlightenment, rather than mere 'belief in'. These
are true rock gods, Sabbath, Metallica, Motley, etc.,
pretending to be employing "evil lyrics."
This guy tries way too hard…
Wow. They had power back then! Now I remembered why I once was a big Metallica fan. Now it’s just a joke live. Nothing works live anymore really. Terrible to watch them.
Was at a concert in Munich and left after 20 minutes. It was annoying for a fan of their music to listen and see this shit show! Better I remember them like this now!
