Definitely. He has been captain for 2 teams now. What has he lead them teams too. How many years has he been captain. He has one playoff win in Toronto. Was never a fan so don't know what he did in long island.

To be both fair and blunt, Auston Matthews is one of the best players in the game today and perhaps even the best goal scorer; however, he has never struck me as a leader. Since his draft I had wished he would rise to become that leader and be worthy of the captaincy, but I have never seen it from either him or Marner.
They both had that opportunity during their series against Montreal to show that they were players who could lead and put a team on their backs when Tavares went down and was unable to play; however, the two of them folded and I wonder if they even deserve an A let alone the C.

I'm surprised that the conversation is constantly about giving it to Mathews. From day 1 I didn't like Tavares as the captain, he's too quiet, he's too robotic, his overtime goal to send the Leafs to the second round is his only memorable moment as a Leaf. Morgan Reilly should be the captain, he should've been before he even signed his latest contract. He's always been known as the guy to organize dinners and be the go between with players and front office, finally look at the team's response last year to him lashing out at Ridley Greg, turned the whole season around.

Give the C to Matthews before the start of the season, it's always been his team since he got there.
Tavares = monotone Robot!🤖 he has always been bla!

No point in taking the C from JT - if the Leafs stay with the Core 4 playoff disappointments. They’ll succeed in the regular season and exit playoffs without a playoff run as long as the Leaf Core 4 stay - even for 8 more years with contract extensions. 😀

I usually agree with Rosey but not with this one. Why should the fans feelings be put aside for Tavares's feelings? He makes over 10 million a year so he will be fine. The letters are actually important. A captain is suppose to lead and Tavares does not do that at all. He is a good man but not a leader. When you know you have to make changes then you do it. By not doing it shows they are just running it all back. As a fan I am tired of being lied to by the maple leaf management. The fans should not have to wait another year for more change. 4 things needed to happen 1 - coach gone - 2 - Shanahan gone - 3- Marner gone, he's to soft and immature for playoff hockey, he should be traded for a top 2nd line center and blue chip prospect. 4 - C removed from Tavares. He was Babcocks choice for Captain, the players don't rise up for the guy so what does that tell you? The Captain had the nerve to tell all the maple leaf fans that they are a "good team and were right there" after being eliminated again in the first round. Umm, someone needs to wake Johnny up, good teams don't go golfing every year. Good teams that are right there don't lose in the first round 7 out of 8 years. Anyone running a business cannot let that guy continue being the Captain. If his feelings are hurt then allow the team to trade him, this is a business, not a daycare for rich players feelings.

Should have never been Captain for any team .. Plays with Zero heart .. He probably has all his Baby teeth left in his mouth .. Dude refuses to get rough especially in the playoffs .. Gilmour got the nickname killer from the '93 playoffs pretty much cuz he looked like he just went through a War .. Yzerman too!!

Watch the blue print with Knies talking about Tavares. He clearly states that John doesn't answer his phone, text or calls. H'es antisocial, he leads by not body checking, by not standing up for his teamates and by not being vocal. You're both way off on this one and he was named captain of his other teams for exactly the reason you guys say that the best player isnt always your captain. C'mon! that is the exact reason he was captain on other teams. Give me one example of a worse captain in all of Leafs history..you can't.

No. Captain doesn't mean "best player". Bobby Orr was never a captain and he was the best player...ever. Tavares is a stand up, straight guy. He works as hard as he can always, and even though he's always been a clunky skater he gets the most out of what he's got with all out effort, which is why he's best down low. Everyone wants a scapegoat for their Christmas toy being taken from them...Marner, Tavares...It's a league known for its parity...everyone is good, especially in the top 1/3 of the league. Cope

tavares should have never been our captain. we even had a press conference, as if he led the islanders to a bunch of cup finals. his robotic demeanor pisses me off so much! have you EVER seen him try to rally his teammates? get angry? scream?
i was one of the few fans that never wanted tavares. he wasn't what we needed at the time of his signing. and here we are...6 years later...we are still where we were when we signed him. he was our biggest mistake of the mattews era. his contract was also the reason why none of our young stars took bridge deals.
hopefully, matthews learned how NOT to lead! shut up, jay.

The way I see it stripping the C doesn’t accomplish anything so I wouldn’t bother. I do however think people often confuse professionalism with leadership. Yes he’s a professional and a great role model for young players and by all accounts a quality person, trains hard and takes his craft seriously. All great attributes.
However all that said I believe the best captains are outspoken passionate players with presence. Not afraid to call out a teammate, and hold people accountable. Someone that stands up for his teammates on the ice and rises to the occasion.
