      Have to disagree with Wayne about not worrying now about what he will do after hockey. NOW is the time he should be looking because you never know, something in hockey or outside of hockey could shorten his career and the big dollars will no longer be coming in. Look how many professional athletes have gone broke even while playing professional sports or within several years after they stopped playing. Like they say, "There is no better time then now". Just hope he doesn't have some scammer investor who will take his money or get him into bad/risky investments.

      Yeah it's not often he gets to be in a room with someone who dwarfs him in stature. When Wayne pumps his tires it's not because he's on Connor's nuts. Wayne has records Connor will never even come in the stratosphere of and both of them know it.

      @@ToddSnow Each player can only be judged against their peers, and the NHL is over 100 years old. Lemieux or Orr are the only 2 other players that even come close to being so far ahead of their peers. Connor is a generational player, but "that's it", as ridiculous as that sounds. He's not leaps and bounds better than his peers. Before Lemieux came along Wayne was so far above everyone it's not even funny. In 1984 he won the scoring race by 79 points. He had 212, #2 had 126. 126 is still an incredible year in 2021. That's why I think you can compare them. Connor is the #1 player on earth, but would people be surprised if he got 2nd in the scoring race to MacKinnon, and both of them within 10 points of #3? Wayne getting second in his prime wasn't even a remote possibility.

    • @ToddSnow
      @ToddSnow 3 года назад +8

      @@jasondashney I hear your argument but I think you are conveniently leaving out that fact that hockey has become much more popular over the years, narrowing the skill gap. Also the game is objectively more skilled today if you look at the lack of enforcement roles in the modern era. Furthermore look at the goalie equipment today compared to when Gretzky played. Do I need to go on? Not saying Gretzky wasn’t a phenomenal player and wouldn’t be if he played today, but comparing his stats to players today who will NEVER be able to catch them due for the evolvement of the game, not lack of skill, is a tiring argument

With that said the greatest all around player to ever lace up a pair of skates was Bobby Orr. His position was defense but he could just as well have worn a G for General. There was nothing he couldn't do on the ice at the highest level at any phase of the game.

    I remember watching a playoff game in the boardroom of a radio station I worked at in the 80's while in my 20's. At one point I had jumped up on my chair shaking my fist at the tv and swearing at the refs for missing a call during a Canucks game when it hit me...I sound just like my mother reacting to another Gretzky goal scored on the Canucks. My mom couldn't stand it when the Oilers played the Canucks because she could not stand Wayne. She was not alone here. Playing against an unstoppable force is not very enjoyable. As a life-long Canuck fan since game 1 I didn't want to miss an Oilers game because of Gretzky and the team they had in the 80's. They were so good I hated them but I just loved watching them play even though I was a Canuck fan. Detractors today say he would not survive in today's game but I disagree. Have you ever watched him in his prime? Sure he had bodyguards but that prevented the really cheap shots that were common place back then. You don't need enforcers in today's game because of the evolution of the game. Can you imagine the Broad Street Bullies in today's game? Not a chance. Philly would be playing shorthanded entire games if they tried that today. Try just hitting Gretzky during the play. He was almost impossible to hit. He had the most hockey smarts and intuition. It was like he had a psychic connection to the puck. Just look the stats. I see mentions of other great hockey players in the comments. I think the only player in history that had a chance to be the greatest is Mario Lemieux. In a career that spanned over 17 seasons with two retirements due to health reasons he averaged 1.88 points per game. But he only played 915 games. Wayne's career spanned a full 20 years and 1487 games where he averaged 1.92 points per game. Best you can say about the competition for GOAT is Mario had the best chance to be the GOAT but his career was cut short. Shoulda, coulda, woulda, etc. And don't even bring up Ovi. Wayne crushes him in even strength goals and assists. Where OVI excels is on the powerplay. That is one record he can hang his hat on. I like OVI, he is a great player, just not the GOAT. He might one day become the GGSOAT though and I hope he does because he has been great for hockey.
    Those were crazy days...so glad I lived through them.
