Hi Scott, great videos! Thanks for all you do! Just a quick note if it hasn't been covered. The Shure lav clip actually goes onto the element BEFORE the wind screen goes on. The clips ring is meant to rest in the groove located midway on the element body. Typically, the ring sits so that the "185" element sits almost flush with the height of the clip, NOT protruding out in a "elongated" fashion. The mic will stand a little higher with wind screen. Once the clip ring is mid element, you can then replace the windscreen. This will give the lav a lower profile look and keep the clip horizontally roughly in the middle of the element body. Truthfully, it works in either direction as long as the ring is centered on the element body, but placing it "under" the cable will surely result in it popping off during normal use. Please keep up the great work!
i absolutely love your videos. i am a tv /doc location sound professional and i enjoy your videos and use them to teach new sound techs about basics etc. the execution and structure of your videos are just very well paced , comprehensible and very well made. keep it up. love it =)
Great video but you missed how to gain stage on the receiver, Its kind of the biggest thing on how to properly set the sound. Excellent videos. Love them and they help a lot.

I just bought SLX-D35G, 2 sets and an extra receiver. This thing is flawless, I haven't seen many reviews out there, I'm glad I ran into this video. I already own an SLX-D Mic and body pack, so this is a great addition to that. I do recommend running the receivers and transmitters with power, as I found AA batteries will last 2-3 hours tops.
@@ScottUhlMusic Its possible, I've only used it once. But I did read somewhere that the further the distance, the faster the battery would drain. I may order the 903's, those seem to last long on my mic.
STOP POSTING ALL OF THIS AWESOME STUFF! I'M GOING BROKE OVER HERE!! LOL!! JK ! Awesome video Scott, thanks! I have the dual slxd system already and this is GOLD!!!! So I can just bring one of my SLXD handheld or my slx d body pack and use that receiver alone right? This is genius!
😂😂 I regret nothing! 😅 and yup, I did that with my gig too…. I used my Beta 87 I got with my slxd dual, and just brought the portable receiver. It’s great! Especially if you already have the slxd system 🤘
Looking to create a wireless audio system for my video purposes. I like the ability to make a boom mic wireless, the only con I can see is the receiver only taking in one mic signal at a time. So I would just need a receiver for every mic input and I would be good. I plan to use a recorder to sync everything to my camera via timecode.
I’ve been looking for a universal system for some time. Sennheiser EW100 body packs are pretty close but this ticks all the boxes. Just ordered two receivers, body pack and handheld transmitters. Fingers crossed they work as desired. If so I’ll be selling my RE3’s and EW-D’s. Probably even use it with my booth. I’ve been wanting to put an antenna on a lighting stand for awhile to get it in the air so this works for that too.
Thanks! Great review. I ordered this a few days ago after knowing about it. It is super convenient than the rack type receiver. I think this portable wireless system will become really popular soon 😊
Great video Scott!! Just like everyone else, blow away at the clarity and sheer in-depth explanation of your content. Simply amazing! So you are telling me, this portable system can run 3 transmitters (as per your example)? I am a DJ, so I can see having this for a wedding ceremony (maybe to second dual one for my reception setup), but the SLXD portable system to run maybe 2 lavs and a wireless microphone? I just wanted to make sure I got that! Again, mind blown if so, and appreciate all the great advice and info! Learning sooooo much more! Thanks sir!
Im a sucker for studio gadgets, I want them all 😂 Btw, I love that you showed how to use the product, as well as the usb power function, they don’t say that on the website so it saves me batteries ❤
Great video! Any thoughts about how it compares to Sennheiser system with their new-ish ew dp reciever-also portable reciever ? Both seem to have great reputation but i am just not seeing people use these portable solutions for live music..?
I haven’t used their portable one. I used the EWD and it’s great too. It doesn’t have a way to set the RF strength, which is why I prefer this one, but that’s a small detail.
Pricey, but that's what you get for digital gear with this much functionality built it. This looks like a good investment for multi-role professionals who don't want to mess around. As I'm not quite in that segment I'll be re-watching your comparison on more budget wireless-XLR to see what I'm ready to give a shot for to add to my toolbox. Cheers!
Thanks! And it’s pricey but also not for what you get for it. It’s quite incredible, and it’s usually what I suggest for musicians who want pro wireless for under $1k. 🤘 Thanks for watching and commenting!
Replay!!! Just subscribed to your channel! Another great video! Your thoroughness, use of visuals, and depth of information is appreciated. This system is a silent gem in my opinion for needing reliable wireless while traveling, being battery powered, and can see this being perfect for wireless speakers. I have the OG UR5’s in H4 band that are still rock solid. However, I can’t see investing in the Axient ADX5D for wireless speakers or needing a channel or two of wireless off the cuff. The feature set in this is very good and can see it being very valuable having a couple of these systems in my travel bag at all times.
Would there be a In Ear Monitor hack to this? Is it possible like with the Sennheiser video you made? I love the portability aspect of this slxd system.
I don’t think so… not until there is a digital wireless body pack receiver, and right now that’s just the Axient digital IEM they just released which is quite expensive
Great video Scott! I'm thinking about purchasing this for the upcoming wedding season. At the end of the video you had mentioned giving the officiant a head set mic. Is there a specific head set or lav mic you would recommend with this wireless system?
Great video! I'm curious if there is a range difference between this reciever and the rack mount version. Possibly with or without 1/2 waves on the rack.
You are the only good source mentioning this system to be used for guitar wireless… how would you compare it with the GLXD16+? I am close to pull the trigger… both have a great form factor, but I am worried that this one is mainly for mics and somewhat will not do as great as a dedicated system for guitars/instruments
Thanks! And this one is the one I use, but it does output at line level or mic level. So if you go into something expecting instrument level you might get issues, but some people don’t even notice. I go direct or into a HX Stomp and I set the input to line so it’s no problem for sure. This will be more reliable than GLXD+ but the + model is both 2.4ghz and 5.8ghz which is really nice. Both are great. Slxd is a better model though 🤘
Hey!! Came here as I JUST gigged a show with the glxd16+ and couldn’t move more than 7 feet from it without getting audio flicker / interference! Re-sync’d on group 1 and SAME issue. Couldn’t resolve it…moved it away from our router etc…only thing I didn’t try was group “2” which is best for multichannel when having interference….at the end of the day I’m sure the glxd16+ will be great for most, but it just takes one time and the SLXD setup is only $100 more!
Saludos desde Ecuador Gracias por toda la información que nos transmites…por favor ayúdame ¿Que cable estas utilizando para conectar el Slxd3 y el Iphone?
The 3.5mm to 1/4” cables work great 🤘 if it has the screw that locks it in on the 3.5mm side, that works really well to keep it from becoming unplugged accidentally
Do you know the differences on the receiver with the traditional SLXD? Less frequencies, distance or something like that? As far as I can see, only the size (this is great) and the output (mini jack). I want it for a saxophone, and was about to buy the SLXD, but now that I knew this one, it´s a great option too. Thanks!
Great video once again Scott. Do you happen to know if I can use one transmitter and send that signal out to multiple receivers? Hoping to have the transmitter come out from my DJ mixer, then have one receiver in one part of a field, and have a 2nd receiver in another part of the field. Receivers would be about 100' away from the transmitter and about 200' away from each other....
Thanks! And you would have to turn one off and the other one on. You can’t simultaneously transmit to 2 systems at once, but one can be off and one can be on and you can have them work that way
Hey Scott! I am a fiddle player so having a portable option for singing while I’m playing is perfect. All I would have to do is buy the headset mic, correct? also would there be a way to use this setup as my IEM system for the road? or would you have other recommendations for portable on the go rechargeable systems as I do play in multiple bands where rack mounted systems for me are not really an option
Yup, you would just need the SLXD15 with a headset mic. And I have a portable IEM hack video here: ruclips.net/video/0WT9fHqVzZg/видео.htmlsi=NPsAzbSGQ6KNbouM
@ScottUhlMusic no, I mean, it's mono 1/4 jack to mini xlr. Can you check which terminals are connected? Which pin does the sleeve go? And which pin does the tip go? Is it a 4pin mini xlr or 3pin mini?
Awesome video as always. I can't understand one thing: this product doesn't really seem designed for instrument signals since it has options to send out line and mic signals only. So can I really use this with an electric guitar to go direct into a pedalboard, a modeler or an analog amp without having, for example, impedance issues? Can you explain how to set the device to be used in this specific scenario, please? (Also the Sennheiser EW-DP seems to be the same product as this, and I have the same doubt as well... non completely sure it can also be used with instrument signals.)
Thanks! Thats a fair point actually. I go into my hx stomp xl with this or direct into the board no problem with my setup. I guess you can run into some of those issues possibly if you don’t use units like those. But always trust your ears. If it sounds good, use it 👍
Which cable do you use to go into the transmitter when you’re doing a wireless p.a? I’m a DJ and that’s the way I want to primarily use this system I already have a SLXD system with a handheld and body pack.
Another great video! I've been trying to figure out a portable wireless setup for myself. I'm a trombone player who plays ringer for a lot of bands where I just show up to an xlr line from the board and some less than well mixed floor wedges. I can't always guarantee I'll have access to power (sometimes I show up to a rats nest of extension cables and surge protectors that are full up or too far away from where I get put) but love being able to go wireless. Having a super small battery powered wireless system seems perfect for my needs. You were happy with the audio quality? Is there any reason to think that this system would not work well for brass?
Nice! And yeah this system worked fantastic for all the situations I used it for. Played with multiple groups too, and it was perfect for using just like you mentioned how you would use it 👍 Definitely a great option, and I bet it would work well for brass
Hi, Scott! Per usual, great content! …had my eye on the SLXD35 as a mini portable/travel IEM set up (XLR plug on transmitter + body pack receiver). I contacted Shure directly to inquire about specs on the system so that I could check its adaptability for my intended purpose, they tried to steer me along to their PSM300 IEM system (I already own two PSM900 IEM systems, I’m not interested in another half-rack IEM solution, especially a model LOWER than what I already own 🤨😆 ). Have you tried using the plug on XLR transmitter (SLXD3) + body pack receiver (SLXD5) as an IEM system?
Thanks! I would agree that you shouldn’t really use it for an IEM system, since that’s not really what it’s for. You would want a way to turn up or down the volume easily on the receiver, which I guess you could do with that buttons mode thing. So it would work, but that’s not the ideal way to use it
Thanks for the speedy response, Scott! I currently use a ProCo W.I.E.M.S. 5 GHz WiFi IEM system (along with my Shure GLXD16+ guitar wireless system) for fly dates where I need to travel really compactly, and it serves me well. I’m a Shure guy though, and that SLXD35 configuration looked pretty sweet!
Ah, I was thinking about this as well, looking for an upgrade to my XVive system. The -12 pad won't be enough to take a line level. Shame. At the moment I have my IEM mix cabled from the mixer to my pedal board and the XVive transmitter attached to my pedalboard, the compact form factor works really well for this.
Hey scott, thank you for this awesome video! in the multimic mode its just monitoring? or can i couple two SLXD1 with one SLXD15 ? at the moment i dont know on which system i want to go... we are often making fairs in europe and sometimes in USA, and i dont know if i go for a sennheisser AVX-ME2 set or the shure SLXD set....
That’s correct, you need a receiver for each transmitter to use at the same time. You can have two transmitters set to the same frequency as a receiver and turn one off and the other one on. But you cannot use two at once simultaneously
I’m looking to buy a Shure wireless system and vacillate between the SLX-D and GLX-D+. It’s for community theatre (200 seat venue) soloists in choir (typical church hall venues) and possibly in my rock band, though we manage fine with wired for small pub stages. I’d go straight for the SLX but I’m in the UK and there are licensing requirements for the SLX-D frequencies and no licensing requirements for the 2.4ghz of the GLX-D+. I’m planning on starting with one mic, growing to a max of three as funds allow. So, small numbers of mics, small venues … would the GLX-D+ be a reasonable bet to avoid having to manage an annual license fee for the SLX-D ?
The SLXD is a better overall system, but the GLXD+ is also a good option. I have videos on both. With The GLXD+, just make sure you don’t have a bunch of wireless already on 2.4ghz and 5.8ghz. Slxd is going to be more reliable overall, but both are great systems
@@ScottUhlMusic I haven’t been able to find your video on the GLX-D+. Meanwhile I came across the Sennheiser EW-D 835-S which has a version in the UK that operates on 863-865mhz, which is license exempt. Seems to check all boxes: digital, not on 2.4Ghz, no license required. I’m not familiar with the 835/935 mics but seem pretty comparable to SM58 / Beta58. Probably because Sennheiser are European they are more aware of the license requirements by country than the American Shure. The EW-D seems a digital version of the EW-100 you review favorably
Hey Scott, thank you for the helpful videos! I work as a mobile DJ and wanted your input about using the SLXD-5 (with SLXD-3 or bodypack) vs the Alto Professional Stealth Pro system for satellite speakers.. I know the Alto is basically made for this purpose and looks solid based on your review video, but it is analog so I would think the SLXD-5 is better for clarity especially at a distance, plus the amount of available channels and the fact that I can use it with my existing SLXD system is huge. On the other hand if my satellite speakers are in the same room as my mains that are wired, can the digital latency of the SLXD (small as it is) be noticed and cause an uncomfortable listening experience if close enough to a wired speaker? I just don't know which to go with and would love your thoughts on it. Any insight or recommendation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
Yeah I’d go with the SLXD, it’s top notch! And we get “latency” just by where the speakers are placed anyways, people often forget that being like 20 ft from a speaker gives like 15ms of latency or something like that. The thing that’s nice of the Alto is you can set the latency by how far you are placing the speakers away, which is nice. But I think it’s discontinued. The SLXD is a fantastic option and I use it all the time for this 👍
@ I appreciate the quick reply! I actually found a place that has 3 Alto left in stock so I bought one (hasnt shipped yet), but I wondered if the SLXD was still the right way to go.. thanks again! 🙏🏼
This is the WEIRDEST question probably, but you know how those K-pop and J-pop idols have the little tiny mics coming from their ears? are those actually plugged into their IEM's? If so, how good are those really? I am looking for something as minimalistic as possible. I am just a streamer so I am in a bedroom that's not really treated, there's no band or anything, I'll be moving around a bunch in a green suit all chromad out. I wanted to go to a lavalier but my beard is too big, I have an sm7b but it's not good when you're more than a foot away, and my boom mic is...well it's a boom mic in an untreated bedroom. Do I even have any options outside of heavily EQing something? P.S. love the channel, I just found it and I am recommending it to all my peeps. Videos are amazing so keep it up!
Thanks! Glad you’ve enjoyed the channel. I’m not really familiar but I believe they have a headset mic and an IEM system separately. I haven’t heard of anything that does that all in one… especially since one is transmitting and the other is receiving.
You’ll want to buy the one with the body pack (with a lav mic) and then buy the WA 307 cable I mention in the video. I don’t believe they sell one specifically for guitar right now, but it’s only $30ish more for the guitar version 🤘
Scott, could you compare the shure system to the Sennheiser EWDP? They are pretty similar, I am leaning more to the Sennheiser because of the mic capsule versatility the handled transmitter has (and also because I am a Sennheiser mic lover), but your opinion is always very helpful. Thanks.
Thanks Leo. I haven’t tried that one, but I would just compare specs and see which one you like better. I’ve gone with this Shure system as my main portable wireless system, but there are other options out there. As long as you find one that works for you 👍
lol, dude you left this comment on multiple videos of mine. It’s simple: Live mics are to be used live (like the slxd), and studio mics are meant to be used in the studio (sm7db). It’s not that difficult.
This is a general comment. I wanted to say how much I appreciate your well thought out, and articulated reviews. You are my go to for quality info. Yup, you would just need the SLXD15 with a headset mic. And I have a portable IEM hack video here: ruclips.net/video/0WT9fHqVzZg/видео.htmlsi=NPsAzbSGQ6KNbouM
Scott, can you please share how the WA 307 is wired?
It connects directly to the wireless 👍
@ScottUhlMusic no, I mean, it's mono 1/4 jack to mini xlr. Can you check which terminals are connected? Which pin does the sleeve go? And which pin does the tip go? Is it a 4pin mini xlr or 3pin mini?
Can you use the plug in transmitter with rack mount slxd receivers?
I believe so, yes 👍
I used the xlr adapter, the SLXD3 personally. But you could do it with the body pack too I believe 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic thanks!!!
What are its limitations? How many of this unit can you use simultaneously without having signal issues?
@@jakegatesmusic you can use a lot of these at once because they are digital: ruclips.net/video/y0A8nmFj96Q/видео.htmlsi=ZuJZNtgKDXLc9dVv
@@ScottUhlMusic thank you, sir. Just watched that video! You are a gift to humanity!
Played with multiple groups too, and it was perfect for using just like you mentioned how you would use it 👍 Definitely a great option, and I bet it would work well for brass
could you set the plug on at line level input?
You can use it with a line level input device yeah 👍
Thanks! And yeah it’s a little confusing. But it seems to be best for monitoring in my opinion. But I guess you could use it in other ways!
this portable version have same sound quality/signal range or anything like rack version?
Yup!
Hey, have you tried stage wave? Or other wifi based monitoring solutions?
I haven’t. It’s for WiFi? So 2.4ghz and 5G? I have an RF explorer and its covers 470-950mhz
Dumb question but I cannot use a guitar and a mic with just one receiver at the same time right or I must have a receiver for each transmitter?
Are you missing the link to the wizzax(sp?)?
It’s in the description under the links for the SLXD 👍
Do you know if the plug-on tx accepts line level?
You should be able to set the sensitivity/input level for it so yes 👍
Can anyone suggest a hard case for SLXD35 (SLXD3 plug-on TX and SXD5 RX)? I'm scared the fixed antenna will get damaged using just the pouch.
Look up Case Matrix cases on Amazon. Super cheap and work very well and have foam to fit your gear
Do you have a link to the instrument version ?
You’ll want to buy the one with the body pack (with a lav mic) and then buy the WA 307 cable I mention in the video. I don’t believe they sell one specifically for guitar right now, but it’s only $30ish more for the guitar version 🤘
Can you use it as a IEM?
I wouldn’t recommend it
Scott, could you compare the shure system to the Sennheiser EWDP? They are pretty similar, I am leaning more to the Sennheiser because of the mic capsule versatility the handled transmitter has (and also because I am a Sennheiser mic lover), but your opinion is always very helpful. Thanks.
Thanks Leo. I haven’t tried that one, but I would just compare specs and see which one you like better. I’ve gone with this Shure system as my main portable wireless system, but there are other options out there. As long as you find one that works for you 👍
WOW
🤯 I agree!
but you are using sm7b.
lol, dude you left this comment on multiple videos of mine. It’s simple: Live mics are to be used live (like the slxd), and studio mics are meant to be used in the studio (sm7db). It’s not that difficult.
I must say, you look like the lead singer from Nickelback, lol
lol the hair? Haha another comment a while back said “you have great Chad Kroger hair” 😂😂
This is a general comment. I wanted to say how much I appreciate your well thought out, and articulated reviews. You are my go to for quality info. Whenever I am curious about a piece of gear I first check to see if you have reviewed it before I start wading through the quagmire of poorly done reviews that fill youtube. Thanks for the insights. I am a harmonica player and am always looking for decent quality gear at decent prices. My youtube channel is here youtube.com/@DaleDutridge?si=f8TPxfEontjwxbqw
Thank you Dale 🤘 I really appreciate that!
Scott, is this an upgrade from your EW100 problem system? Similar size etc. I don’t need multi mic mode
