So Tia is totally right for getting them! konnyaku is common in Japanese hotpots. They are jello like. Full of fibers. very healthy for you.
This was beautiful. I'm excited for the Nikko vlogs. Perhaps you can add more fotage of Tia speaking Japanese and interacting with the vendors. Thank you for sharing, enjoy Nikko!
I can't wait to see where you go next! If you go to Kyoto I do recommend going up Mt Inari (via Fushimi Inari Taisha). Even though the shrine is a top tourist attraction in Kyoto, not many people make it to the summit and so the crowds thin out partway up and it's a lovely walk.
4:05 that is 串ぬれおかき (Kushi Nure-okaki) 'Nure-okaki on a stick'. Nure-okaki is a kind of rice cracker. Nure means soaked. okaki are many kinds of rice crackers that is made with Mochi rice. By soaked, it often refers to soaked with soy sauce. And because it is made with mochi rice. when soaked it got some mochi texture to it.
The temple is called "Yamadera" in Yamagata prefecture. Yamagata Prefecture is famous for its beef and cherries, and I think that ekiben probably use Yonezawa beef.
The three balls on the skewer are konnyaku. It is a 0-calorie food made from the hardened root of the konnyaku potato. It's a superfood that helps eliminate waste from the body, cleanses the body from within, activates good bacteria in the intestines, lowers cholesterol levels, and reduces the burden on the pancreas, making the body less susceptible to diabetes! Furthermore, it is an invincible diet food. Have you ever seen a warm stew called "oden" sold at the cash register of a convenience store? Beef muscle, eggs, konnyaku, thick fried tofu... it's the best 💓
I've been to Yamadera in January few years ago, it was difficult to hike up there with slippery ice and snow but totally worth doing it once when you reached the observatory box, overlooking the other side of the mountain and village, just like a master piece of Oriental Ink Painting, a stunning one!
Happy Thanksgiving To Both Of You. Keep trying yummy food on your way to 1000 stairs. Congrats you made it up and down the stairs. I laughed with Tia [ easiest name and I always say Tea sorry ] mistakes happen and so happy you have a place to stay in your budgets. Outstanding from start to finish.
That "little box" or lookout above the town of Yamadera is a major viewing spot during Sakura Cherry Blossoms season, especially toward the opposite hills from where you were standing. At that time, the population of the town explodes with tourists. One thing you may not realize is that the topography of Japan is about 2/3's forest. The remaining 1/3rd contains all the farmland, industrial facilities, cities, homes, etc.

Thank you for your wonderful videos. I'm Japanese (people in Tohoku), but I can't help but feel the temptation to go to the place you ask me over and over again!!!!!! Here are some tips for travelers planning to visit Japan. The Shinkansen (bullet train) they rode is "Yamagata Shinkansen". A typical Shinkansen is a ride that runs in a straight line like a "drag racing car", but the Yamagata Shinkansen is a ride like a "high-speed roller coaster". It doesn't do somersaults though. The section between Fukushima Station and Yonezawa Station is very thrilling. Please try it.
Wow I’m totally adding Yamadera to my list for my next Japan trip :) Especially since my husband and I have already visited the bigger cities (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto) and would love to explore other areas. We did the Kurama/Kibune hike outside Kyoto (maybe 45 mins by train iirc) and it was so serene and beautiful like Yamadera. I watched this video with my husband and he agreed, it gave us the same vibe. Japan has so many gorgeous hikes leading to their temples, it’s definitely something one must try if they are able to. Can’t wait for your Nikko vlog!😊
The airbnb fail reminds me of a late night wandering around Hakone trying to find a place to stay with my then girlfriend. The way she treated it as an adventure made me realise I had a keeper.
Aww...Happy Thanksgiving guys! We can totally relate when you say you've been missing family. It's only been over a year for us but we're definitely feeling it! Great video!
G’day, if you like old historical buildings etc, you may want to visit kyoto/nara when you goto osaka. Kyoto was the old imperial capital until the capital moved to tokyo/edo (tokyo literally means eastern capital)
good morning. You went to Yamadera (Risshakuji) in Yamagata Prefecture. Wow: I also went by car in September this year. In the Edo period, a man named Matsuo Basho wrote a famous poem, ``The quietness and the voice of cicadas seeping into the rocks''. The view from Godaido on a sunny day is also a good place to relax.
🙀So you took the train to JR Nikko station and the Airbnb is near a different station? Or you went to Imaichi station and the Airbnb is around Nikko station? Because Imaichi is now technically part of Nikko.
Random, but I just started following you guys after lucking out finding the video you made in Gamcheon Culture Village while I was working on my own video for it :P Since then I've been watching all of your content (starting with japan bc I'm going there next month) my random question is where did you get your black pants from? They look so comfy and can be worn with anything. I also was wondering about your shoes bc if you guys are wearing them with all your travels they must be awesome walking shoes! Trying to learn how to pack minimally and not have blisters this trip :P
The bird noice is for blind people. But did you also know that every train has a different sound! Shinkansen has one, and the different stops also have one to themselves. It’s true amazing 🤩
Please at least get some good Aomori apple juice for that 😂😂 Some of the 青森林檎 made apple juice are quite amazing. Aomori青森 is a big Apple prefecture. Famous for apple farming. 🚅🚅So I was geeking on the trains because my baby nephew has been really into trains lately. And I happened to pick up on something: the route draws on the map 9:47 is not correct? ...(* ̄0 ̄)ノ I figure you took the Senzan-sen from Sendai to Yamadera at the beginning. And leaving Yamadera from the other side of the Senzan-sen toward Yamagata. And hop on the Yamagata Shinkansen toward Utsunomiya before change a train to Nikko. And the map at 9:47 draws a line from Yamagata to the east through a motorway instead of following the train track south to Yonezawa before turning east to Fukushima. Yes I am trying to point out a map error here! haha ~( ̄▽ ̄)~*
When we have more money, we’d really like to explore all these places with a car. It seems like the really cool spots are often outside the bounds of public transport (though Japan specifically is phenomenal here).
So....I think we stayed at the same Airbnb. If so, I'll just say the Lion D'Or grocery store down the road is very good, we went there for dinner every night! Also, if you have time, try to get to Ryuokyo Gorge. It's not that far from where you are and it's absolutely stunning!! Also if you climb to the top of the Airbnb you can see the twin towers 🤣
