Actually, when he was 16, still playing for Barcelona youth team, he was already a star amongst native Barcelona's fans. I remember El Mundo Deportivo and Sport (big Spanish sports newspapers, related to FC Barcelona), dedicating full-page articles and even a cover to him, in 2003 (1 year before his unofficial debut with the first team). Every week, there was this article about the latest match of the youth team and a special mention to Messi's performance (in that same team were playing Messi, Cesc Fabregas and Piqué as 15-16 year old teenagers. That team still holds an unprecedented record in youth football: they won all the competitions they had participated in that season, without losing a single match). Everybody following those newspapers were perfectly aware about Messi's potential. His nickname ''Messias'' dates from those days, before his debut with men's team, because there was a journalist who told once that Messi was called to be the real successor of Maradona, and as Maradona was known as ''Dios'' (''God''), teen Messi was nicknamed ''Messías'' (like ''Messiah'').

I watched him in the under 20 youth world cup in 2005. The hype around him in that tournament was insane. Everyone was saying how he would be the next big thing, a player on the level of possibly pele, maradona etc.
It all came true and thats the even crazier part. When I first started seeing him dribble past defenders in big matches I was cheering him on and saying to myself ''he's actually doing it.''

Cristiano does in fact know how to Dribble, and he was a great #7, yes later he changed to main Striker. But if you have watched football for as long as you say... You should remember him playing against and for Manchester United. He indeed has Great ball Control and Dribbling ability. Of course due to Height he can't slalom between 5 players... But he could outrun many players.. If you see his games against Spain, they where Magical! Also the game where he eliminated Sweden from World Cup qualifier that was Spectacular!!

All Messi has to usually do, is penetrate the defence, and at the right moment, place his foot between the ball and the foot of a defender, and there u have a penalty-situation. So easy. How often does he do it? Well, he´s never done it, not once...!

As a kid I always waited for a player like Pele or Maradona. Fenómeno was that player but he got injured too young. I watched other top players like Romario, Bergkamp, Zidane, Roberto Baggio, Ronaldinho, Aimar (I know he isn't as top as the others but he was my favourite player). And then Messi arrived. I felt the same that I felt with fenomeno. Danger in everything ball he touched , o matter where he was. I was expecting someone like Maradona and he surpassed my expectations. I will no longer watch football after he retires, not because i don't love it (I will always play) but because I witnessed perfection.

Gonna miss Messi dominating games like this, he’s aging now and it’s hard to watch him not be able to perform how he wants or used to, but that’s life. He is the GOAT. No one played with his ability especially since day 1. Raw talent and skill. It’s been a pleasure watching him all these years. Ronaldinho was my favorite since early 2000s, and Messi took over in the best way. I really believe he has a great shot at winning the World Cup this year, the team is finally built to cater to him, and the coach actually knows what he’s doing. The players actually want to win FOR Messi; young, talented and almost all proven to be adequate players. Hopefully this is his shot. Love you Messi, and good luck !! 🐐👑
