      Strats are the work horse of guitars. They are probably the most versatile guitar ever made. If you play out a lot and could only have one guitar with you at all times...it would be a Strat that I would chose. It can cover everything from country to jazz to rock and beyond.

    Mike, I love your tone and feel. It's really refreshing to hear a masterful guitarist playing a vintage instrument and not trying to impress the viewing audience with nothing but excessive speed or distorted shredding. You demonstrate the subtle tonal differences between the 2 '54's perfectly. I have been playing for over 50 years and have owned many fine Strats, both new and old and agree that they can be very different from one another. I would be hard pressed to choose between Julliet and Anne.

    Mike, out of all the millions of videos I've seen on RUclips over the years, this one brought me the most joy.
    I played 3 different '54 Strats out of the same amp & all 3 sounded different. Only one of them sound like what I thought a '54 Strat should sound like, whatever that may be, so that's the one I bought.
    Nothing beats a '54 Strat, not even a "59 Les Paul.
    Thanks so much for this wonderful video.

    Great video, Mike. And great playing. What you did was a superior comparison test
    of two special guitars from the same year and all original. The differences in sound are
    quite remarkable. Beautiful, both of them. Anne is more of the classic "Straty" sound
    while Juliette is somewhat darker with more tone. That was a surprise to me. It's
    close to a Hendrix-y, mid sixties sound. I have a '66 that sounds a lot like that believe
    it or not, even with a rosewood board. While '66 is not considered as great as the
    pre CBS Fender guitars and amps, I would not trade mine for anything. Love to have
    a vintage '50's Strat but not if I'd have to give up the '66 Olympic White. Your demo is
    one of the best I've seen. I like Juliette better for lead but Anne has the classic snap
    and crackle of the best Strats for chords and rhythm. Thanks. Very enjoyable

    My very first guitar was a 1954 Stratocaster ... very well worn, that my dad gave me for Christmas, in 1963. He paid $75 for it, which was a large amount of money for my family at that time. It went out the back window of my brother's 1961 Ford station wagon early, on 25 July 1965.

    • @MikeBurn
      @MikeBurn  9 лет назад

      Tony Glover I would put it this way (for my personal taste) - Anne is addictive for playing with a hard 'twang', hence as a player you forget easily about calming your right hand attack-power down, while Juliet inspires with its warmth and longer sustain for more dynamic and accentuated/melodic playing.

    • @tonyglover3561
      @tonyglover3561 9 лет назад

      You have a very nice way of saying things mate.. wish i could be so articulate. . You hit it on the head .
      I am on a tone hunt .. guess it all starts with the guitar .. its easy to forget that with all the different amps ... speakers ...pedals and .... then when youve found the amp you like, the speakers you prefer and the guitar you like .. you have to hope that you dont end up with a friday afternoon guitar ... where the guy in the factory just wants to get out for the weekend ... he he .
      Thank you again for the video .. great stuff .

    Once again, it just confirms things I've been saying for years now. I totally get the desire of collectors to get THE original vintage guitars, etc... But if a guitarist is only looking to get a guitar with the sound of the vintage guitars, today there's no need to spend tons and tons and tons of money on original vintage ones. A good decent guitar will be enough. Since they have all a different sound, it's just a matter to find the good recent ones that will have the sound you're looking for.

    • @tonytouchzz

      Phil Smith dont think anyone who want "the best sound" buy a vintage guitar. the reissue are made with the exact same pickups so it souns identical. all people want from the vintage one if the "collecting" of a vintage

    Just a little story about a certain '54 Strat for anyone who might be interested....
    I have always been a great Strat fan (as well as many other models, but) - about 35 years ago I was talking to a well-known vintage guitar store owner and collector, who was an ex-Fender employee as well. He gave me a tip about one particular Strat, and said if I was ever in this smallish town an hour or so north of Toronto, to go to this certain music store and ask the owner to see his old '54 Strat.
    Well, a few months later, we were playing the bar circuit in that area, so one afternoon the other guitarist and I went to that nearby town and that music store. The older gentleman who was the proprietor happily went into his downstairs store room and brought it out. Wow-it was Serial #0049 !! A beautiful instrument in good condition, and the oldest example of a Stratocaster that I have ever had the pleasure to play. I asked him about it, and he said it was all original, except for one pickup, which was a replacement from the early 60's. I asked the price, and he said he wanted $2000 for it. Unfortunately, the bar circuit then (as now) didn't pay particularly well, so needless to say the $2K was out of my range.
    I don't know exactly what that guitar would sell for today, but one thing I'm pretty sure of- I bet you could buy about forty new USA Strats for that price. I have a few other old Strat stories from many years of pursuing vintage examples of what Mike here calls " the most versatile electric guitar"....but I have already taken up too much of your time , and space. Cheers.

    The only complaint I have about this video is the equipment he is piping those guitars through. Certainly they are going to sound their best. It might have been a good idea to include a modern Strat for comparison purposes.

    • @MikeBurn
      @MikeBurn  9 лет назад +1

      adr1701 Actually I used a single cable running into a Hughes&Kettner Tubemeister 36 Tube Amp (!) with an old analog (!) delay slaved in for some ambience. It's hard to use less... the equipment in the video background has nothing to do with the guitar sound, it is used for creating music playbacks.

    They both sound spectacular in their own ways, it really depends on which one you like , you cannot go wrong on either one, but to me Anne has more aggressive but beautiful sound. Juliet is so sweet and very smooth. I'll take both, these two guitars just blew me away, they are amazing!

  • @j_freed
    @j_freed 8 лет назад +1

    Super nice.
    There could be little differences that make them sound different. Pickup height and setup is one thing. Juliet's pickups may be a little more de-magnetized, and/or Anne may have a few more pickup winds and higher impedance. The pots and capacitors should be about the same, but I'd still want to compare the wiring. Finally, you have wood density & how a specific neck will couple vibrationally with a specific body.
    Regardless, this test proves something, hearing these two perfect original examples. There is no 'real' Stratocaster sound, just a good sounding Stratocaster if you are holding one. And probably a million ways to change it or find one you like better.
    Oh and watching this I was ready to hate you if you actually owned both of them, ha ha. Danke.

    Amazing tone from both. Maybe the first may fit my taste a bit better but I adore them both..I an a vintage les paul but I've found a 78 Japanese stratocaster it is very different than a les paul. You really got to work hard to make a strat tell a story. Thank you for the inspiration man you are one of my very favorite players. 2thumbs up..P.S .I don't think I'd be in a hurry to send these 2 girl's back lol

    This is a very interesting comparison - thanks for sharing! Both exceptionally beautiful and interesting guitars! While tone is so subjective, to my ears and IMHO, Anne blows away Juliet! These are two dream guitars for sure, but back to back, I love the attitude of Anne... That's the Strat sound that kicks around in my head! Great job with this video!

    Mike, what a brilliant video, thank you!, You are a wonderful player so you could make a poor guitar sing. However your point is very well made I enjoyed your demonstration very very much. Is there a chance for you to GET ANNE and compare to a 50th anniversary (or newer) to put the vintage in perspective to the "custom shop" of today, That would be a wonderful thing to see. Since somehow you came into TWO of those rare beauties, I think you are the man to ask....! Regardless thanks again for a great demo!, Sincerely Michael Wilson

    First you are Awesome player so much feeling and nice melodies in your solos! What kind of setup did you use for recording? Keep doing these superb videos will you. Your playing motivates me to play guitar and focus on having fun/playing with soul not just wanking with speed and techniques. I'm sorry for my bad English but hopefully you understood what I tried to say. Keep ROCKING!

      Niklas, I'm glad you like my approach which is not to demonstrate how fast you can play a series of notes on a guitar. :) For this demo I played both Stratocasters through a Hughes&Kettner Tubemeister 36 Amp, and used the DI-Out of it into the mixing desk where I used a very mild compressor function (Ratio 1:2 for dampening a bit the wildest peaks) and NO additional EQ. As the only effect I used a 80's no-name analog delay slaved into the Tubemeister via send/return I love for it's subtle warmth.
