I had tickets to see him perform at the El Rey in Los Angeles the week after that performance. It’s a small venue that holds about 700 people. I paid $20 for my ticket and after that performance they were going for $425 on Stubhub! I stood in the front row and soaked up every minute of it knowing I would probably never be able to see him that close in a venue that small ever again. It was so amazing!

The Band Perry had so much promise. Until the pivotal shift in 2016, they pushed themselves lyrically and had different production sounds while still remaining pop-country. I really enjoyed their cover of “Gentle on my Mind” which, ironically, was their last successful output before the release of “Live Forever.”

First seconds into Traveller and it felt like the music I had been looking for all my life (only 17 at the time Haha but still). Traveller, the first two Steeldrivers albuns and basically every video on RUclips of Chris singing live were everything I would listen to in 2016. The appalling treatment of women in country music at radio has been going on for years. The 90's gave us some big new female artists who were amazing (Lorrie Morgan, Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride, Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Terri Clark, Jo Dee Messina, Sara Evans, LeAnn Rimes and Lee Ann Womack among them), but sadly by the late 90's/early 00's, women became uncool or undesired at radio and they began to fade away or have disappointing chart performances. Since then, for every Carrie Underwood or Miranda Lambert there have been countless briliant new artists (like Tammy Cochran, Chalee Tennison, Catherine Britt, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Sonya Isaacs, Jessi Alexander, Sherrie Austin, Anita Cochran, Amber Dotson, Kellie Coffey, Danni Leigh, Allison Moorer, Whitney Duncan, Susan Haynes, Jamie O'Neal, Kellie Pickler, Julie Roberts, Ashton Shepherd, Gretchen Wilson etc) who have been largely overlooked.
Feel like 2013 “What are you listening to” by Chris Stapleton didn’t get enough credit but its so good it should’ve at least been included in Traveller.
As a girl, I actually really love Luke Bryan's "That's My Kind Of Night" to this day. I always thought it was just so fun, and upbeat, and yes, it is ridiculous and a little ingenuine but like, sometimes that's just what a girl needs, you know what I'm saying... And also, *LETTUCE IS THE MOST BORING THING IN A SALAD* It doesn't even make a salad. If it's just lettuce, that's not a salad. A salad is lettuce plus a whole bunch of other good stuff, BETTER stuff, piled on top of the boring tasteless lettuce.
Love your channel! Keepem coming! Have you/ have you thought about doing a video on Jamey Johnson? He's a modern outlaw for sure. Me and my dad seriously related to his song 'the dollar' back when it first came out
Wow did not see the Band Perry story coming! They were absolutely my favorite country band from the last decade and I was sad to see them completely sink their own ship. Pioneer is a great album front to back. Wish they would return :(
How would rank Midland, Jon Pardi and Luke Combs bringing back more country style songs and being successful at it in the late years of the decade? Those artist to me are such a breath of fresh air in country
I was a teenager when all this was going down and I'm realising now how closed minded I was and how much I rooted for bro-country just because it was the top of the country charts at the time. Looking back, I don't know how I liked That's My Kind Of Night.
Very interesting video. Thank you for discussing this. It’s interesting to see what is happening to country music right now. I wonder if this is hopefully just a transition period for country music so that it can continue to evolve better. Because things are just getting so weird
Garth’s new stuff would gain traction if he put his music on RUclips and other streaming services, and he could make a killing if he put his music on RUclips and streaming services
2013 CMA Awards .. Luke Bryan performs "drink a beer" and I can't stop listening to the background vocals by this longhaired dude. I kept coming back to that performance, googled the guy and instantly became a Chris Stapleton fan.....
This was such a wild ride down memory lane, great video! Also, you should check out Mike and the Moonpies Cheap Silver and Solid Country Gold if you haven't. I think you'd really like it!
Hey dud really liking your stuff after subscribing agmfter your bit on Rogue Rocket. Also just saying as a tried and true Taylor Swift fan. Most fans do not consider Red or even really most of Speak Now "country" that was when she transitioned to pop in most of our minds.
I specifically remember the Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake performance. Haven’t watched a country music award show since because I don’t know if they are good performances on them 😂.
I have a lot opinions of the whole T swift leaving country music thing but..I picked up a guitar for the first time in 2010 after my first break up and man as embarrassing as it is, T swift provided simple and relatable country songs that I could play and it got me hooked on the genre. Now I’m a pretty hard core country traditionalist. Big BP fan as you can see by my picture. Attended the Cmas in 2016. I also got a tele built by the guy that builds Brads guitars for him (Bill Crook) and have been playing traditional country lead for like 6 years now. I can’t help but think that if it weren’t for Swift I wouldn’t have the love country music that I do, and I think a lot of people feel the same.
People claiming sexism for the lack of female artists on the radio are the reason we have so many trash songs/albums from women winning awards. Judge artists by their music not their sex. People are so concerned with equality they forget talent.
I think there is an equal amount of great songs and albums from women right now, but they aren’t recognized nearly as much as some other artists today... that would be the issue.
Justin Smith it’s not the people (fans), it’s the industry?? And it’s not a reach at all if you really look at who is getting the play time and who isn’t.. it’s the same with radio not playing guys like Colter Wall, even though his videos get hundreds of thousands of hits. It’s the industry purposely not playing these artists, and yes women are one of those who are victim of this. It’s very well documented.
Mickey B Yes. Unfortunately you can make a trash hip hop song, and have be a hit as a man, and a beautiful song not even get close to the number 1 spot at all.
I really have no desire for beef. I invited him onto the channel if he wants to give some insight into his world that he clearly thinks I have blanket disdain for.
@Garrett Scroggs I went ahead and listened to "hey boy, hey girl" and it is so awful. It is not even catchy nor does it have quality production. It is a bad song, period. Upchurch's defense is that because he wrote it alone that it is better than "Nashville crap", but if I made a Big Mac at home, it doesn't change the fact that it is cheap processed food.
Oh, I thought "Mom" was a great song... it chokes me up every time I hear it, and I've even seen Garth cry singing it numerous times on tour, the most heart-wrenching performance being dedicated to Sophie Goudreau, a newbie fan of his who had lost her young son in a tragic accident, so she and her husband went to his Ottawa concert in 2016, and requested that he play the song on her birthday, in which he did... There was not a dry eye in the house... :(

@beautiful sound it's her decision. And hopefully it's always consensual. But what do I know
Love your channel! Keepem coming!
Have you/ have you thought about doing a video on Jamey Johnson? He's a modern outlaw for sure. Me and my dad seriously related to his song 'the dollar' back when it first came out
I listen to my grandfathers music
The goat got me 😭😂
Wow did not see the Band Perry story coming! They were absolutely my favorite country band from the last decade and I was sad to see them completely sink their own ship. Pioneer is a great album front to back. Wish they would return :(
Bro Country got me back into country music after a decade where I couldnt be bothered with it and I know a number of people in the same boat.
Great video, you're really good at what you do
This is a great video Grady! You hit a lot of good points
Haha, that's what teenagers do best! No shame in loving what you grew up with! (But it is weird to look back.)
Because it’s super fun to sing and dance to?
I was secretly hoping for the goat during the Taylor Swift segment, knowing it didn't really belong, but you never let me down Grady.
Cup of tea time and a Grady video.
Ed DeVito yup
Thank You for using the goat version of Taylor swifts song. Made my day!😁
Grady!! We need a top 10 Texas artists/songs video!!!!
Jordan Cooper Dixie chicks 🐣
Love this. Solid recap. 👊
The intermittent clips from music videos always get to me haha. Anyone else?
Grady, I love your videos! I especially loved the one with your Mom and Dad and hope they are both doing well : )
2013 CMA Awards .. Luke Bryan performs "drink a beer" and I can't stop listening to the background vocals by this longhaired dude. I kept coming back to that performance, googled the guy and instantly became a Chris Stapleton fan.....
I generally don't like country music at all (not saying it's bad, just not for me) but somehow I still find myself watching all of these videos 😂
Totally agree with Blake on that quote!
Always there listening to all the great stuff you have to say!!! Always relevant and pertinent! BIG FAN!
Appreciate it!
Thanks Grady! Very good content!
This was such a wild ride down memory lane, great video! Also, you should check out Mike and the Moonpies Cheap Silver and Solid Country Gold if you haven't. I think you'd really like it!
LOVE that album. I covered it in some album roundup... I think I said it reminds me of James Bond on a road trip through Texas
Love your content brother.
A Brief History: Country Music in the Past Decade
Hey dud really liking your stuff after subscribing agmfter your bit on Rogue Rocket. Also just saying as a tried and true Taylor Swift fan. Most fans do not consider Red or even really most of Speak Now "country" that was when she transitioned to pop in most of our minds.
Yeah I agree with that, but country radio and awards shows had a hard time letting her go!
Thanks for your nyance take on Taylor. I realy like your way to see things in reality.
Great video!
I specifically remember the Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake performance. Haven’t watched a country music award show since because I don’t know if they are good performances on them 😂.
Chris Stapleton is the reason I started listening to country music again
I have a lot opinions of the whole T swift leaving country music thing but..I picked up a guitar for the first time in 2010 after my first break up and man as embarrassing as it is, T swift provided simple and relatable country songs that I could play and it got me hooked on the genre. Now I’m a pretty hard core country traditionalist. Big BP fan as you can see by my picture. Attended the Cmas in 2016. I also got a tele built by the guy that builds Brads guitars for him (Bill Crook) and have been playing traditional country lead for like 6 years now. I can’t help but think that if it weren’t for Swift I wouldn’t have the love country music that I do, and I think a lot of people feel the same.
you summed up The Band Perry beautifully.
I'm syked I knew most of these stories, that means I know more about country music than I give myself credit for lol.
How many likes for the goat?
One of the best music video edits of all time.
Drinking Problem by Midland made a huge impact in my opinion in the 2010's. Just the same impact as Tennessee Whiskey
I could see you were going for bigger moments. I kept thinking about Mindy McCready's death in 2013 and how shocking (but also not) that was in 2013.
Few people talk about her now, but I loved her in the 1990s and was shocked by her death.
I just scribe to your channel it’s awesome Big fan of country music also what do you think about George strait should I listen to him
People claiming sexism for the lack of female artists on the radio are the reason we have so many trash songs/albums from women winning awards. Judge artists by their music not their sex. People are so concerned with equality they forget talent.
I think there is an equal amount of great songs and albums from women right now, but they aren’t recognized nearly as much as some other artists today... that would be the issue.
ChuaChewa “I Think.” People listen to what they listen to. Calling that out as sexism is a bit of a reach.
This is why we need more Kelsey Waldon in the mainstream
I always wondered what happened to the band perry! I don’t hate the samples I saw here - I’m gonna check them out again :)
Can’t wait for the year end list Grady! (P.S. Homeland insecurity but be on the the top 10 albums list ;) )
#1 upchurch tryna start beef with Grady Smith
I really have no desire for beef. I invited him onto the channel if he wants to give some insight into his world that he clearly thinks I have blanket disdain for.
@@GradySmith Yeah, the whole situation is kinda dumb, but I definitely would love to see that video!
