I have a focus 1.8 tdci 115hp zetec since 2004 when I bought it new, what to say is an absolutely great machine with a great reliable fast engine and everything works as well as 16 years ago, I love this car and I will not change it for a long time yet.
Used to own a 2002 1.6 Ghia. Bought it in a hurry after seeing my Golf written off by a bus and what a car that Focus was! Smooth driver and with the seat and steering wheel adjusted to my requirements THE most comfortable car I have ever had(and I've had loads) . Can't say a bad word about it.
I share a similar scenario. My wife's Fiesta got written off by a 30 ton tipper truck ! We then bought a Focus. As you say 'what a car' especially for the £450 it cost !
Can't really argue. Bought a 2000 model a few months ago and i haven't noticed the driving position at all....which must mean it's ok. Change all the bloody stoopid ford wheelnuts, check it's got oil and coolant and drive off into the sunset. I'm not looking forward to changing the cambelt admittedly (but then again, who does.)
My wife’s 2003 ebony which she has from new is still running great the only problem it has leather sets which are heated but she would turn theme on in the cold whether don’t ask me why
Love my 2003 Focus Ztech HB. Went from a Ford F250 4x4 to the Focus. Took some getting used to. In 14 years of owning it, only 1 thing had to be repaired. The ignition lock would not allow the key to turn in order to start it. Inconvenient. Fixed for $225. Still runs perfectly and the body is perfect.
I own a 2001 Focus MK-I with a 1.8 liter Zetec. The car has 160.000 kms from new, and other than brake shoes and discs, I only had to replace a water pump, a IAC sensor, and the engine mount under the radiator expansion tank. Really reliable car, comfortable, nice looks, great ride quality, and all the factory suspension parts are still on the car, and no strange noises come from anywhere. The front shocks are getting tired tough. This one is a car I will never sell.
I’ve a 2005 1.8 TDCI 240000kms, it’s a brilliant car, braking, road holding and change of direction absolutely super. Just passed it’s contrôle technique. Work needed? Front tyres, rear discs and pads. I think that I’ll keep it forever.
Just sent mine off to the scrapyard after 16 years in the family. Awesome car. Sad to see it go, would have kept it in a garage and restored it if I had the space. Upgraded to the MK2!
It is 2024 and I drive mu focus mk1 1.8 tddi as a daily city driver. It is economic, it is fun to drive and it still has that wow effect of people on the street when they see it. Untimely design. In fact I love it so much that I gave my Audi S4 to my wife.
I had a 2001 2.0 zetec for 12 years and put 120,000 miles on it, in all that time only issue was a failed alternator and a split water pipe, you can keep your BMW or VW, That Focus was just great, shame the build quality dropped with the mk 2 and even further with the mk 3..
I have a 03 zx5 and she still looks great and drives amazing. I love the design, driving experience, and story behind this car. Truly a great car through and through. I’m so happy that I ended up with this car because it was not on my radar at all when I was looking for a car. I remember when I sat in my car and turned it on for the first time I thought to myself “this is the car for me. I’m buying this car.” I’ve had it for about 2 years now.
This is great! Jeremy's original review from Top Gear was the only one here until this. Thanks a lot! Also, I own a 2000 Ford Focus hatchback and I love it! I spent quite a lot on repairs but its mostly because of neglect from previous owners and the fact that it's 14 years old now. It's going strong still! :) I plan to replace it with a Ford Fiesta in the near future
The mk1 Ford Focus was a revolutionary design and a great family hatchback! The vehicle still looks/drives relatively modern to this day! Also the value of used examples are really low in the UK at the moment with many advertised for under £1000 so know is the time to grab a bargain!
I reckon the early models will become sought after classics within 10 years or so. They represent the best of the typical cars of the late 90s. Just try finding a low mileage immaculate example even now.
dungareesareforfools Yeah the RS and St 170 models are definitely going to be very desirable before long and this generation itself has depreciated to its lowest point making it an ideal investment car
These cars won’t go up in value,it’s like saying a mk1 mondeo is a future classic, only the best examples of RS and st will be sort after the rest wont be missed at all
Daz Z are you sure about that? Take a look at prices now of any bog-standard 70s Ford compared to what they were 10 years ago. And the Focus was revolutionary in its sector.
Picked one up for me missus for £700 50k on the clock..that was 2 years ago..all I've had to replace was a rear wheel outside of general servicing.. bought a tomtom and a £89 stereo with all the bluetooth mp3 usb etc (frankly better than most modern factory fitted sh*te they charge £300+ optional!).in a word a brilliant little blighter
I used to have a 2005 Ford Focus ZX5 SES. That car was very easy to drive from a 1998 Ford Contour. I was in a bad accident in the Focus. The other driver wasn’t paying attention. He was driving a bigger car. My car got hit on one side and rolled over the belly side up. The impact from his car is when I broke my left ankle. I also have little bruises and one little bump. I was wearing my seat belt at that time, too.
Last year I got my first car, a 2002 Focus limousine. It's come in the years, has its little problems, but it drives nice and I like it. Originally I was looking for something to drive d for the next 2-3 years, until I could afford something better and the old one probably wouldn't be roadworthy anymore, but now I think, I'll probably keep it at least as a project car
Great review of a FANTASTIC car. I have a 2009 mk 2 Econetic and I just love it. over 70 mpg, £30 a year to tax and wonderful to drive. I am hanging on to this car as long as I can.
Eric George do you have any problems with the car? i have a 2008 focus mk 2, i love it too. Why don't you sell it? it's almost 8 years old, why don't you want to buy a new car?
i have an ford focus 2004 since 2017 and still going strong pass mot and few fails on very simple things to fix and cheap too , love my focus great car and cheap to run too.
When this came out I saw it as a good copy of the Fiat Punto and Lancia Delta, with a borrowed V-tec.. Zeetec engine name from Honda. It was overdue to update their line alongside the Ford Ka.
I don't think this car was a copy of anything. In fact other manufacturers clearly copied the Focus when they saw how successful it became. The Zetec engine name was applied to at least two completely different engines in the Focus; the 1.4 and 1.6 were co-developed with Mazda whereas the 1.8 and 2.0 130PS were the older design from the Mondeo and Escort which was completely Ford.
Plus the mk3 /4s were really pretty good. They had independent rear suspension 18 years before the Focus, and before the mk5 reverted to the older, inferior Fiesta setup.
I reckon Ford has succeeded with the Focus. It was - and still is - a great car.The MK1 still compares favorably to brand new cars in 2014 (in the C segment class). Chevy Cruze? What's that?
Yeah, I think early 2000 hatchbacks are so much better than some today's hatchbacks. We had the Focus Mk1, the Corsa C, Golf Mk4, which are infinitely better than Chevy Aveo, Cruze or Dacia Sandero!
I bought a 2004 mk1 1,6 aut 5d hatch, silver gray, a couple of months ago. It had run 171,000 km, I don't think that number was fake, lol, it's really good condition. Very hard to find a used car with automatic transmission in Denmark but well, I was sick of manuals and finally found this. Fell inlove with it fast, the 4 automatic gears shift like a dream, it drives very smooth. I wonder where my car was assembled?
@@michael5089 A couple of years later unfortunatly my car had a sudden motor failure on the highway and it was not worth it financially to repair. It went to the junk yard 😪
