- Here is the first part of a multi part series on Funk Drumming.
This first video acts as an introduction. I show you my influences as well as several techniques I use to play this type of music. For source material, I am using the classic Funk book The Funk Drumming Workbook by Chet Doboe. This book is out of print, but you can find it online for download. In this series, I will be performing and analizing all of the 15 solos that are in the back of the book starting on page 45. This video features solo #1.

One of the best drum instruction RUclips channels, period. Rick, you cover all the angles . rudimental, jazz, indepence, latin, gear, technique. A well of knowledge and information. Thank you!
I am so happy I’ve found this video. I’ve contacted Chet Doboe to try and get my hands on the book, he’s from the same county as me and helped my High Schools drumline. Unfortunately I couldn’t get to meet him. This is a true gift that I’ll get to see the solos and have it broken down!! Thank you!!!!
I can imagine how many (thousands) hours it took you Rick to reach that level of virtuosity on the percussion world...!!! I play and study drumset for 23 years (I am a lawyer for a living), I have also studied classical piano from 6 - 13 years old.
I haven't listened or seen anyone that matches your level on so many musical areas. Sometimes I wonder, dosen't he have a family to spend time to? 😄
I will say this! You can never stop learning!❤
Hey Rick.. you is a funky mother - shut yo mouth! 😂. You mentioned some of my heroes. Dave Garibaldi, Clyde Stublefield, and a few others. Great playing as always. I had a peavey radial kit for a while. The 750 series. 14 rack, 18 floor, 24 kick. Very cool drums. Loud as all get out.
More videos! More videos! You are the one of the best!
Amazing drumming and information Rick! Thank you!
Thanks as ever Rick .
Currently away from my kit so this video has given me a funky lift of inspiration until back in the drums .
Brought my pad :)
Fab. Thank you. I worked through Chet Doboe as a kid and now I'm a teacher and would like to have used it, it's a brilliant book but I couldn't find a copy, all I had was a photocopied version I had from my teacher back in the stone age. But it can be found as a PDF now.
Eat feel Rick👍💯
Wow! I haven’t seen those Peavey shells in years! Sounds great.
excellent! just found my cd/dvd's from your great book.
Love them Peaveys!!
Hey Rick! Greetings from Matthews. I love the sound of Peavey Drums! The bass drum always feels like a gut punch when you're standing in front of it! Would love to take you to lunch and talk drums and percussion sometime!
Nice work
Smokin!!!!
Nice! I will slide in a bit here that tap dancing and tap dancing rhythms were a big influence on Jabo, IMHO, and that there's a lot of interplay between the hi-hat and snare that, when put together, are tap dancing related.
1:04 YES LORD!
slow the speed wayyyy down to see what he has done . COOL
From what I can tell it's just doubles (RRLLRR on hi-hat followed by LL on snare) but good lord his dynamics turn it into something else. Something to practice for sure. Clean hi-hat doubles are wonderful to hear (see also: Damion Reid playing on Glasper's F.T.B.)
Great video!
Could you do a video about funk groove solo over-the-barline in future?
Cheers!
I haven't seen you in a while Rick; good to see you again!
I've been right here!
@@rickdior for some unknown reason, I don't see any of your videos unless I specifically look for your channel. Maybe it's on me, I don't know, but I was just being honest that I haven't seen you in a while, maybe two months or so? Anyway, it's good to see you again Rick!
👌
I love watching your ability. I am currently going through Alan Dawson’s book right now and not having any jazz background it has been quite challenging. If a rhythm is too hard to achieve do you recommend skipping it and moving forward or should I stick with it and learn it no matter how long it takes?
Maaaan, I haven’t seen the Peavey Radial Pros since the 90’s.
Rick, I don't see the Zildjian Remix hats anywhere. Where are they on the kit?
Has anyone found a site where we can download The Funk Drumming Workbook?
What brand of drums are they?
always thought those peavey drums were ugly as can be, but they sound great. the first ones had no lug screws, just on tightening screw, like a barrel.
Does Peavey still make drums?
Hey guys!)
Can someone of Chats books owners make scan?
in some small and cold country we cannot buy nothing from stieve weiss^)
what mics do you use rick?
In this video I am using 2 Neumann 89 overheads and a shure Beta 52 on the bass drum.
are those weird shells designed to be quieter?
No, louder
Hey I just got to dance
Rick what are those headphones called? Thanks!
It's in the video description.
Click where it says "more".
@@rickdior got it thanks so much
