There is nothing better when you play on drum kit & cymbals with kind of sounds you like most and left arm most of the time while playing, should be in "cooking and simmering" mode, playing with all type of ghost notes on superb tuned and sounded snare drum, while leg on kick drum pedal keep playing some straight "pumping" beats, like a heart connected on pacemaker, and then switch on syncopated beats (switch off "pacemaker") when some beats can surprise even you as a result playing with different variation on rhythm which you have started. And such "surprises" are sure sign that you just step into higher and more joyful level of the playing drums. Now, you have played with drums - and if you can remove grin from your face - that is also sign of groovie type of playing.. Cheers my dear mates, wherever are you now. Too bad, Oliver Taylor Hawkins is not with us anymore..

Wow! Love it Dennis! I was on a plane with James Brown one month before he passed away. I was flying from London to ATL Nov 2006. I stood right next to him as someone was putting their bag in overhead. I turned sideways and he was sitting there. I was standing right over James Brown. We locked eyes and I whispered to him "James Brown." He looked right at me and in a quiet yet high-pitched voice said "Hello." It was an awesome moment for me. He was wearing a full purple suit with his hair slicked back. Apparently he had just been in London doing concerts with Joss Stone. One month later he passed. It was a great experience for me. I could swear Dennis re-interprets the 1 when he hits the b-section.
The snare plays on the & of 2 and & of 4, but Dennis moves the whole feel so that the snare becomes a backbeat - and grooves with that feel - then resolves it with the fill.
It moves the beat for me every time I hear it, especially as the horn stabs that match the snare hits are louder than the guitar riff which is actually the time-keeper.
If I was dancing to this at a gig I'd probably fall over!

Years ago back in the 70s I worked at a studio in Atlanta and James and his band showed up to cut some demos. It was my first real big session as an assistant engineer. James is out in the studio trying to get the drummer to find the groove James has in his head. The tape machine is rolling and James is waving is hands, arms, legs and feet with emphatic grunts and groans. The tape machine is rolling…. Then James goes to the bass player and does the whole routine all over again. The drummer is going and the tape machine is rolling. Once he’s happy the piano is next. The drummer has broken a sweat, the bass player is pushing it hard and the tape machine is rolling. Oh yeah, the cassette deck is goin too. Next up, gwitar. Man, I’ve never seen anything like this. And just as the tape machine is about to run out of tape, the 2nd one starts up. Everyone is cookin. No one is missing a beat. And then it ends. James leaves with the cassette and hours later he calls with instructions where to cut up the multitracks. If I ever wanted a video camera or cell phone…that would have been the time. Such a perfectionist-and the man was so on top of it. It was one of those times when you would look back and only say how lucky I was to experienced it.

I met Dennis last week and saw him perform for the first time since the modern Drummer festival in the early 90s. He was playing with Adam Deitch who has a ton of Dennis DNA in him and who happens to be one of my favorite drummers of all time and definitely my favorite drummer of my generation. Let me tell ya, Adam did not crumble or disappoint plan alongside George Porter on bass and Dennis Chambers on Drums! I must also add that Dennis was as humble and as nice as anybody I’ve ever met in my life. I’m talking zero ego. There’s been a few times where he has chose to critique the modern Drummer world and Holly feels about the direction it’s going in kind of like an elder statesman. It wasn’t about ego it was just his idea of what groove is and how he feels about the competitiveness that’s going on in today’s gospel chop obsessed drumming.
I think it would be a marvelous idea if you guys got Dennis back and he broke down 10 or 20 of his favorite funk and R&B grooves to build drumming for the youngsters of today !

I remember maybe 1970 James was playing a large high school gym in Flint Michigan. Peter C Cavanaugh, station director at WTAC, Dave West amplifier builder and I went to see him play. There were three drum sets but just two drummers. Occasionally James would go up on the riser and sit at the drum kit and Kick the Shit out of the band. Me and Pete and Dave were just screaming our heads off he was just kicking it like nobody else, the women were going nuts and the whole place was dancing. What a great time! What a talent!

Uncle Dennis back at Drumeo! This dude's timing & chops are multi-dimensional, yet he always sticks to *the music* of each song.

When I was a little 10 year old white kid in Bumfruck, CT. Neighbors would see me dancing to James Brown and they thought I was nuts. But I was in heaven. Because of cool cats like Dennis Chambers.
