  • This is a fairly long video where I walk through the steps of completing the first service at about 1,000 KM (600 mi) on the 2021 KTM SMC R. This includes step-by-step on the oil change procedure and the chain tension adjustment.
    I also attempted to install and connect an OBD II wifi module to view and clear any fault codes. I was unsuccessful on this step, but wanted to include if anyone has experience with this and can help out with making this work. If you know how to do this please let me know in the comments.

      @@CTPSupermoto I absolutely love it. Already racked up almost 2000 miles on her. Every ride is a blast

    Lock the front brake with some strap and put the stand holding the rear of the bike with one hand, its much easier. I use a magnet pen to remove the filters.

      Thanks for the tip! I will try that. My method works but is pretty awkward. Never thought of locking the front brake.

    Enjoy the bike. Mine still hasn’t been fixed as of yet there waiting on ktm. But once I get back it’s getting traded in

      What are you looking at to trade in for?

      @@CTPSupermoto I’ll be trading in for the new Harley sportster s I’m my bike collection. Have a 14 street glide and it’s a great bike. The new sportster s is a beast has 121hp 94trq only 500lb machine

      That looks like a good choice to me. Cool bike. I was pretty disappointed HD put the Bronx on the shelf, particularly seeing the power numbers on the production revolution max engines.

      @@CTPSupermoto yes I think they decided before doing bronx that they where going to redesign the sportster and bring that legacy out even more. I think they made a great choice. I have a 14 street glide Harley as well and it’s not fast but has plenty of torque and amazing for putting a lot of miles on the road and can be very reliable when you take care of them

    You’ve been busy! Bike is looking nice! I just bought a 20’ w/ 1k miles on it. Dealer serviced at 600 but this is a good reference for some things to keep an eye on. First mods were VM case saver, and fuel filler. Next is MotoMinded stout mount and rear cable guide. Ducati Spacers as well to get rid of the slop. Keep up the good work!
    One thing, I noticed the manual says to check chain tension with the bike on the side stand. Did you have to readjust or was it still within the limit?

    • @CTPSupermoto
      @CTPSupermoto  3 года назад +1

      The manual for the 2021 had both options. One on the side stand and one with the back tire elevated. I had to adjust it. It had way too much slack in the chain. Was surprised I hadn’t felt any chain slap.

      @@CTPSupermoto I was lil shocked how much slack was in mine when I took it for the 600 mile tech. But like u said I didn't even really notice it

    Which OBD2 /6 pin adapter do you have, the earlier ones are K line protocol, 2019/20 are CANBUS, 2021 are a Euro 5 (red). They 1st 2 look the same but have different pin outs on the 6 pin side.

      Thank you very much! I’ll try this again once I track down the correct adapter.

    Did your bike come with heel guards? Mine just had passenger foot pegs that I took off there.

    • @CTPSupermoto
      @CTPSupermoto  2 года назад

      My bike came with heel guards installed and the foot peg we in the box of extras. The foot pegs would replace the heel guards - same mounting point. They are plastic pieces that don't look great. At some point I'll replace them. You aren't missing much.

    • @volodymyrshoniia2424
      @volodymyrshoniia2424 2 года назад

      @@CTPSupermoto was there anything else in the box of extras? I got the tool kit, keys, ktm folder with a notebook, extra key, card, power parts and spare parts brochure, that's about it.

    • @CTPSupermoto
      @CTPSupermoto  2 года назад

      @@volodymyrshoniia2424 There was a rather cheap KTM pen as well. Other than that sounds like you got everything I did. My dealer said they are instructed to install the footpegs as part of assembly, but knowing everyone ditches them they don't bother.

      Shit my dealer didn't even give me the tool kit. I m extremely pissed about that!!!! I left my passenger pegs on tho. My daughter LOVES RIDING WITH ME. She likes the fact that she is the only person that can ride with me

      Tool kit is hidden under the left front shroud. Pull it off and see if its tucked in there. It should be in a cutout in a plastic bag. Its not a great tool kit. Could probably build your own better one for pretty cheap

    I don't understand why he is replacing all them parts with new ones on a new bike.I have a 2010 ktm690smc bought it with 1119 on it back in 2012 And I change my oil ever 1500 miles but I have never replaced any of the o rings or the oil filter screens. I clean and inspect everything looks good I put it back for 10 years now and a little over 38000 miles. I am just saying I wouldn't replace any of those parts unless they are damaged.

    • @CTPSupermoto

      Thanks for watching! The video is an attempt to be a guide to doing the first service to KTM service specifications on your own. Those specs call for the replacement of the oil filter screens and the o-rings. Given the amount of metal shavings in the screens on the first service I still think its a good idea on the first service - although with a good cleaning, I agree, not totally necessary. The o-rings were in fine shape and not necessary, but they were very cheap and I had them so replaced. Subsequent services I will be doing the same as you - clean, inspect, and replace only as necessary. I might still replace the o-rings given how inexpensive they are - on previous Hondas I have owned I replaced crush washers every service as well - if its cheap and recommended I figure its worth it.
