After watching that start segment, a video idea that I think would be really fantastic to see is a radar guide. As someone who is just reaching radar oriented jets for the first time, it’s a little confusing when it comes to the different radar modes and how they function. A video explaining the use of radar, how the function, how to use it, and similar to the start of this video, explaining which key bindings you want to assign and why would be incredibly useful. Great video as usual btw.
I think he said he is gonna make one eventually but for now you can go watch Tim's Variety radar guide, it is slightly outdated though.

There's a couple of good ones for radar explanation, I liked Tim's variety radar explanation video, it goes over some of the older ones as well like on the do217 or some of those older radar planes, as well as the at the time of the video newest ones
Yeah Tim Variety has some awesome guides on radar's and how they function in game, and MatAWG has some really great stuff also.
@skilz2kil yea he does, I've always enjoyed Tim's stuff for the explanation side of it too, it's one thing to know what a radar does, but knowing how it WORKS makes a helluva difference in game

Unrelated to the video, but yesterday I met a enemy flying the Russian premium p39 w/ 40000 air kills and 55000 ground kills. He had 1300 vehicles and over 1000 spaded. Not to forget that he had way over 200 days on the game (only realistic battles)

Vertical scan is good in dogfights if you can't use HMD for some odd reason. Also in DCS without markers it's sick for scanning an area during a turn at your altitude, which is helpful for reacquiring a target during a fight.

The problem with the "old" ACM mode can be somewhat eleviated by binding it to one of your mouse buttons instead of buttons on your keyboard. I got it set to middle mouse button, and when it selects the wrong target I just press it off and on again to aqcuire a new lock (or break lock if my missile starts tracking a friendly). I also have my missile buttons bound to one of my side mouse buttons. Basicly with this way you're controlling your movement and all of your weapons with one hand, and you have your other hand free to do other stuff like holding "C" to look around, switch weapons, use flares and controlling basic throttling up and down of your engine. This works really well for me.

Briefly tried it in the F4J too and it's actually pretty fun too now with the change. A little bit of a slug these days but it's a big upgrade not having to drag the nose onto target for a lock.
The F-4J shouldn't have an HMD-slavable radar, the radar officer didn't wear the VTAS helmet, which was only for sidewinders anyway.
@MrNewVegas no, but the WSO *could* slew the antennas range to whatever angle they wanted to pick up on similarly to how an HMD functions within gimbal limits. That's probably why they added the feature to planes with 2nd seaters, to add functionality that you otherwise can't get access to in a single player contolled plane.

The R-27ERs are just so powerful, and also the radar is now fixed so far IMO, and it can lock from behind even in PD mode.
The MiG-29 is a great and beautiful looking jet, but the main problem before where it’s radar, missiled and teams, but it’s great to know that this buff increases the playability of this jet.

the hmd is absolutely a massive asset irl, remember pilots dont get a radar on their hud (unless theyre russian), and that hud definitely isnt on their helmet(unless theyre very modern).
modern combat doctrines mean merges and dogfights dont happen often, but when they do you effectively always hmd slave your radar to acquire a target. and you of course want a small targeting area because its a dogfight and you want to lock the correct target
just wish the mig 29 radar didnt lose lock so easily in war thunder, though it is plenty good enough right now.
wonder if theyll accurately model that in american hmd planes the lock mode on the hmd is permanently active while in hmd mode, and not a button press like the russians. makes it easier to use in a panic, and more likely that you lock an ally while panicking too.

8:57 usually if you use HMD in mig29 you already see the enemy so the small box is not an issue. I am not a pilot thats just how it is in dcs.

Had that happen with a R24R. Locked a F16 who ended up going very low as he should. My missile pitched up 50 degrees and hit a F14 that was way higher than him
Mice like the EVGA X15 (I have it) make top tier easier. There's plenty of side buttons in an easy to remember pattern for all the keybind you need for radar stuff, plus some (like a MOBA mouse but better). Plus, it has a second right click you use with your ring finger (that can be physically disabled so it won't move with a switch on the bottom if you don't want it). Having the missile prime/fire button on that is very useful imo.
Does that mouse give you like 12 mouse buttons or you have to bind the extra buttons to keyboard keys?
@@booblizard104 I just have them set to keybinds personally (num pad numbers are best) but I think there's a way to add "extra" keys/mouse buttons. I'll check later.
@@booblizard104 my biggest gripe with logitech mouse is that these additional function keys arent their own bind but a repeat of a keyboard function.
I got a mouse with 12 extra buttons on it.. pretty useful for radar, and weapon controls in air rb

6:15 f7f is the best jet killer, I've only watched this youtuber do a video on it so it must be totally correct!
It would be interesting to have a new video on the Mirage 2000C against the current meta, about 15 days ago they buffed its maximum speed before breakup, now ~1530km/h on low alt, and today or yesterday they buffed its acceleration on all altitudes.
I just wish they buff Magic 2 and 530D and it would be a really nice plane !
it already is a really nice plane, it's BR is very good, it's performance is great, and it's kit is just good enough, the m2k is one of the best planes in the game for its BR

You would never have problems locking people with radar if you had a radar keybind "Select Radar/IRST target to lock" since it allows u to cycle thru targets on your radar and choose manually who you want to lock.
As I said, i got 3 legs not 3 arms
It's not realistic to cycle targets when you're dogfighting people
@@DEFYN precisely, there is a reason why before modern computers became a thing US chose to put a guy in theyr BVR platforms who had one job and one job only - operate the radar.
And of course WT wont give the NATO two man planes theyr radar "automation" advantage they should have ...

@@jaek__ the US often had 2 people in its planes 1 pilot and 1 Electronics guy, or navigator who handles the radar and map stuff, this lets the pilot kick ass and the radar guy to handle the rest, less work to be more efficient than a soviet 1 seater. Gaijin hates the US tho so not coming I think lol

In real life it would, since the radar beam is slaved to the pilot's head. If the radar is modelled any kind of properly in War Thunder then it also would, but there's no guarantee WT does anything properly.

In my experience, the HMD radar lock will not lock up a target even with perfectly clear sky behind them and in a radar-cold situation. ACM will, for some reason.
Can't vouch for real life, but in DCS yes, the HMD radar slaving is absolutely mandatory in knife fights. And with a 10km range, there's little reason not to use it for WVR engagements.

Hey DEFYN, just recently started watching and learning from your videos. What control scheme is it that you use that lets you more freely manipulate the camera while still maneuvering?
press c then look behind your plane it locks the circle that flies ur plane direction will only be changed by keyboard inputs
@@ferrous3262 I suppose the issue is that I rebound my throttle to W and S instead of scroll so I don't have full control while I'm panning the camera

is there a video or something i can reference to show how to defeat turning fighters like Spitfires and Ki-84s in my Corsair or Bf 109K? i have been having a lot of trouble with them on equal energy on the initial climb of the game. will somebody please give some pointers?
Hey Ryan, check the old strategy guides made by "green fury" there're many vids dedicated to bf109 tactics and tricks for fighting spits or more manouvrable planes...it helped me a lot...those guides are old but still effective! HF

Imo. There should be more than 1 gen 4 with hdm. Right now, it’s only really the mig 29 that can do it. I know that the F4j can do it too, but it doesn’t have any all aspect ir missiles so it’s not really useful

Why my R27ER is missing super easy headon kills?? I launch it at 6km, he does nothing to NOTCH it. but somehow the missile decides to fly around him :( and this happens relatively often. It makes me really frustrated.

Notch using rwr if it’s a radar missile, cut throttle and flare for for IR. Not much else to it
Like prev comment notch if radar missle and if you are high diving down can help aswell while notching IR indeed throttle down and flare but still even doing both of these things sometimes it just does not matter

hi peoples, ive been watching defyn for six months or so now and i still cant figure out how he appears to be maxing his turns but never blacks out? is there a setting somewhere to limit your turn rate to your crew's G-tolerance? thanks

Keep in mind, since the radar reworks, HDN = Head On, non HDN is all aspect. If a MiG 29 locks you up in a head on scenario, best thing to do is to chaff / go cold. Most pilots don't realize while having someone locked up they can switch from HDN / normal PD. Only radars with normal PD / TWS and HDN TWS / PD have this. Planes like the F14 which is stuck with HDN dont.
On the other hand, IRST on the MiG 29 is still gimped. Sometimes, I have to switch to the more narrow scope 30x10 I think and go ACM but even then still doesn't wanna lock. Nevertheless this is still a great QOL update for the MiG 29.
