The radar gunsight doesn't work very well in third person view but as a simulator player I can tell you that even when they're manouvering, in the cockpit it works excellently
if it worked well in third person it would ruin top tier in sim it doesn't matter as much as the worse planes are probably gonna play when the br brackets favour them, and half the time you dont even need it since people dont know how to dogfight

It essentially makes it so you have to remove any radar lock you have (inlcuding a TWS lock) to get the regular gunsight back so you can guess where to aim with a reticle actually pointing where your guns are pointing as opposed to guessing with a reticle that's all the way in Narnia. Edit: it is very accurate when the target is flying straight, it's basically a free pilot snipe from almost any range if they do that, but since you can't count on the enemy to fly straight in general, especially not in a dogfight, that only makes it a gimmick at best.
I've only found it super useful in super low-speed fights (ones that you should probably be able to lead on your own) or head-ons, which, as it turns out, I'm bad at soo..
I have used it several times with good success. Target flying fast, me flying fast, entering a dogfight and people slowing down and maneuvering and it still works great most of the time for me.
@Noé I wonder if you can use it for head on. Start spraying at 3km. People usually start shooting at 2.5km to 2km and then breaking away. So if you shoot early, maybe..
I got a downtier yesterday against F-5E's and premium F-4S in my Mig-29. My whole team died (6 people crashed smh) and I was left with 1v8. I won, it was like shooting fish in a barrel. Felt absolutely dirty and unfair lol.
Unless your in a 11.0, just got my J-7E and it isn't fun at all, only got downtiered twice out of 30 matches. The fact that my first top tier plane is MiG 29 doesn't help at all

The radar gunsight only indicates how much you should lead the gun, and nothing else. For example, if your target is going in a linear path from your POV, then the radar gunsight will work perfectly. If it's manoeuvring, then just aimaing the radar gunsight will just never hit. What I do is that I get in a favorable position (like above the target) then use the radar gunsight to get the correct lead, and then I spray a little to the right and to the left for good measure. Often you can tell where the target is deviating to and correct for it on the fly. Well, as long as you understand the only 100% reliable information it gives you is lead, it's a pretty useful tool.

@@HelmutGaming The crosshair has to be exactly center mass. In the clip, even though he had the crosshair on the plane for a split second, the plane rolled out of the way before the bullets hit and they went over the wing root.

I am spading the Mig-29A (GER) right now and gotta say even stock its a beast and with all the performance upgrades I actually won several 7 kill matches yesterday. Hands down best plane in WT right now. My only gripe with it is that the radar scale scope does not change and the refresh rate on it is pretty slow. F-14 comes in second place and Mig-23MLA would take the third IMO. I don't like the F-16. I spaded the american one, played the Chinese one but they all feel like big meh. Even had more fun in J-7E in full uptier than F-16. I think the F-16 would fare much much better in 4v4 matches as you could focus more on sustained ratefighting and not worry about getting third partied. But right now? When they changed matches to 16v16? In these 32 player matches, F-16 without FOX3 is completely outclassed.

Radar controls in general have me hella annoyed... I can move my Radar pitch but ONLY if I, instead of fixing it to my nose, fix it to a vertical point which it will always aim at.... wtf? just let me keep it fixed like normal but move the pitch independently....

Idk what you on about on R60Ms being less flare resistant than 9Ls after they’re flare resistance got nerfed, I can be full AB in my MiG29 and dump 1 flare and the 9L will go for the flare, but when I fire R60Ms they will ignore flares way more than my 9Ls do now
I have an F-16 but not an MiG-29... but I am always amazed at how responsive the MiG-29 seems by comparison. The F-16 feels like a brick at high speed, and while it is generally good at defensive flying, you need to often pop the airbrakes so you can pull hard enough to avoid guns/missiles. Watching the MiG-29's flight performance and missiles just make it seem like it is a far superior plane in almost every way.
The f-16 has a modeled g-limiter iirc while most other planes don't which makes it seem brick-like. If taken to the same liberties as other jets (NATO included) it should be significantly more nimble
@@paraweld9838 Agreed, the g-limiter might make sense if they are trying to be realistic as possible... but when every other plane can pull insane g's it becomes a real balance issue. Like when I fly my F-14, its performance is obviously not meant to be as good as the F-16, but that thing can do crazy maneuvers when you stomp on the elevator. This is not to say flying the F-16 is like suffering or anything, its a good plane, but it does feel like having one arm tied behind my back.
@@paraweld9838 It's not a G-limiter, I can go to 13g just fine, it's an AOA limiter that becomes lest problematic at low speed since the F-16's yaw, pitch, and elevator authority at low speed was/is still overpeforming. If you duel/test FM you'd know the F-16 could beat literally everything in a 1v1, now the MiG-29 can actually win since their AOA is about the same. The MiG-29 is still hilariously underpeforming, but what can you do.
@@jaek__ The MiG-29 and F-16 aren't really under/over performing anymore. The only FM problems right now are that MiG-29 cant do a proper cobra (which in dogfights really doesn't matter since you'd need to turn off instructor and if you do that theres a very big risk of just going into a flat-spin) and that the F-16 cant pull 9Gs at mach 1.1+ even though it should be able to IRL. When it comes to dogfights, both fighters are performing exactly how they should. The MiG-29 is better in the first few turns but in sustained dogfights, it doesn't do well. And thats exactly how it should go as the F-16 is one of the best rate fighters even in modern times.
I was test flying a plane and I used radar gun sites for the first time and I felt like they didn’t lead enough they were always a little slow in predicting speed I’m still in early German Jets I have the Mig 15 So I’ve been going fast a lot recently but even going slow in a climbing shot it was short

Coming back to the idea of separating flares and chaffs, it's a very good idea but I'm afraid Gajin won't implement it for one very simple reason: newer players won't be able to distinguish SAHR from IR etc, so it will be an obvious hurdle not technical but experience, which would be related in the game. Btw nice video :^)
If they don’t end up adding it, I can guarantee that is *not* the reason lol. Gaijin doesn’t cater this game around the lowest common denominator. They could easily add a toggle button, allowing you to choose between flares, chaff, or flares + chaff just like the “switch secondary weapons” keybind for missiles, bombs, and rockets or “switch primary weapons” for different calibers of guns. It’s not unprecedented, this would be easy to add and it wouldn’t even effect the noobs.

Unfortunately that can of worms has already been opened with rank 7 premiums, but the best mitigation for it is to expand or add a new air tutorial for high ranks, since the current tutorial puts you in a biplane and only teaches you that, nothing for the vastly different strategy and equipment involved at the high ranks
@Xiphactinus That argument doesn't really hold any water when the gameplay at top tier is entirely different to the rest of the game. Even if a player is not new to war thunder, they'll be new to top tier, and thus not have the experience with different types of missiles that only show up in later ranks of the tech tree.

You been saying alot of planes been bad, meanwhile Tier IV and V germany LITERALLY HAVE 1 "Decent" PLANE EACH, while being extremely being downgraded in 6.0-6.7. I arleady got the G.91 R/3 and that been helping alot to grind the tree but I do wonder if you have any opinion on the matter...
I think this lead indicator should be switchable on and off. There have been so many moments where I wanted to shoot a priority behind another target with a missile but it was aimlocked to that target so that I missed someone else that was passing in front of me. Also works really bad on headons where you want to land a missile hit but being ready with the gun just in case it misses.

if we're going for realism that shot is actually too easy to do currently, the real mig 29 needs a button press to change between being able to shoot cannons or missiles
I started playing this week and these videos helped me a lot, even as I don't have jets, yet I still watch them I know aim sensitivity is very different and depending on the person and mouse and dpi is going to be different but could you at least do a quick aim settings run down so me as a new player know what to use, currently I'm in stock sensitivity with delay
@@schlong8276 Even using manual wing sweep and keeping them all the way out it doesnt feel consistent. Seems like i still just bleed speed even worse when i use flaps and end up slow and losing the rate fight against jets with much weaker rates like mig 21s
@@MrRobschnieder Depends on fuel state and payload. Never take vertical fights since the 14A has abysmally weak engines. If you'd like I'm more than happy to help teach :)
I personally feel like the aim 9Ls are worst atm, never can get a good use out of them unless they aren’t obviously paying attention or stock. Also the radar/ sparrows for F16 and etc feel really bad then it probably should be.
The Falcon is in a weird spot (and is in almost every way outclassed by the MiG-29 now...), it probably needs some love along with the F-14. And Mirage. Maybe the tornado too but I know nothing about it. Also the Aim-7M's are performing totally wrong lol.
@@AlexVanChezlaw I don't know, both r60m's and aim-9l's have comparable flare resistance but 60m's turn much faster off the rail and can be used much more reliably at closer range as well as in headon jousts since there is less time to react. The 9L's are good at longer range shots but those offer more reaction time. I personally prefer 60m's having used both.
Theres a control your using. I use to use it but forgot the name of the control . When pulling a high G turn there is a control you can use to keep your turn with out blacking out (you kinda straighten out for a moment) whats the name of that control?

I kinda hate that my 27ERs get notched at higher altitude, so I would love to just have a normal pulse mode for these situations, but from what I saw, that is not actually possible, right?

After flying the German MiG-29 a bit and having flown the F-16/F-14 pretty extensively to good effect, I honestly think the fixed FM MiG-29 should have it's R-27ER's removed. The base 27's are already very competent missiles and the ER's just put every other missile to shame, even the Phoenix to a great extent. It's either that or the F-16A gets early amraams but I hardly think that would do well to balance everything else out. TL;DR - MiG-29 has such good missiles and flight performance that it probably doesn't need the 27ER's to still do well. Those were just a lazy addition.
I dont think ERs should be removed. The normal R27s have abysmal acceleration and way less range, basically completely removing the BVR capabilities of MiG-29. They should rather buff sparrows or add the earliest AMRAAMs with low range to balance out BVR.
@@Julio_Tortillia I was originally thinking they should add AIM-120A's to the falcon but I don't necessarily want more powercreep to ruin other nations. Also, the regular r27r's may be slower but they were still very effective in my experience. They had pretty good range. The mig-29's radar is definitely good enough now that the base 27r's have some reach comparable to other contemporaries.
For some reason, other than the odd crazy undodgable R27, I’ve actually been doing pretty well in the J7E at top tier lately even though I only got it about 2 weeks ago. PL5-Bs certainly help of course, but I’ve had a whole bunch of dogfights against 12.0s and I literally haven’t lost one for some reason, and I feel like I probably should have by now. Is the J7E still the strongest 1v1 plane in the game, or is it just that I’ve played against 12.0 “noobs” every single time? 🤷♂️😂
It’s probably the best top tier dog fighter jet in the game. If you can approach the 4th gen without dying and they started to dog fight with you, it’s normal that you destroyed them

Top tier might actually be kinda fair and balanced, there’s MiG 29, F-14, F-16, Mirage 2000, all pretty good planes.

@@paraweld9838 Agreed, the g-limiter might make sense if they are trying to be realistic as possible... but when every other plane can pull insane g's it becomes a real balance issue. Like when I fly my F-14, its performance is obviously not meant to be as good as the F-16, but that thing can do crazy maneuvers when you stomp on the elevator.
This is not to say flying the F-16 is like suffering or anything, its a good plane, but it does feel like having one arm tied behind my back.
@@paraweld9838 It's not a G-limiter, I can go to 13g just fine, it's an AOA limiter that becomes lest problematic at low speed since the F-16's yaw, pitch, and elevator authority at low speed was/is still overpeforming.
If you duel/test FM you'd know the F-16 could beat literally everything in a 1v1, now the MiG-29 can actually win since their AOA is about the same.
The MiG-29 is still hilariously underpeforming, but what can you do.
@@jaek__ The MiG-29 and F-16 aren't really under/over performing anymore.
The only FM problems right now are that MiG-29 cant do a proper cobra (which in dogfights really doesn't matter since you'd need to turn off instructor and if you do that theres a very big risk of just going into a flat-spin) and that the F-16 cant pull 9Gs at mach 1.1+ even though it should be able to IRL.
When it comes to dogfights, both fighters are performing exactly how they should. The MiG-29 is better in the first few turns but in sustained dogfights, it doesn't do well. And thats exactly how it should go as the F-16 is one of the best rate fighters even in modern times.

I was test flying a plane and I used radar gun sites for the first time and I felt like they didn’t lead enough they were always a little slow in predicting speed I’m still in early German Jets I have the Mig 15 So I’ve been going fast a lot recently but even going slow in a climbing shot it was short

@@M0LOCK neither could that particular version of the mig29 in the ussr tree. That was added when the upgraded radar for the mig29s, which currently is only on the yak141.
I found the gunsight to be pretty reliable with IRST

Coming back to the idea of separating flares and chaffs, it's a very good idea but I'm afraid Gajin won't implement it for one very simple reason: newer players won't be able to distinguish SAHR from IR etc, so it will be an obvious hurdle not technical but experience, which would be related in the game.

Simple: make it an option that creates two new binds instead of one countermeasure bind.
If they don’t end up adding it, I can guarantee that is *not* the reason lol. Gaijin doesn’t cater this game around the lowest common denominator.
They could easily add a toggle button, allowing you to choose between flares, chaff, or flares + chaff just like the “switch secondary weapons” keybind for missiles, bombs, and rockets or “switch primary weapons” for different calibers of guns. It’s not unprecedented, this would be easy to add and it wouldn’t even effect the noobs.
Newer players shouldn't be playing top tier.

Unfortunately that can of worms has already been opened with rank 7 premiums, but the best mitigation for it is to expand or add a new air tutorial for high ranks, since the current tutorial puts you in a biplane and only teaches you that, nothing for the vastly different strategy and equipment involved at the high ranks
@Xiphactinus That argument doesn't really hold any water when the gameplay at top tier is entirely different to the rest of the game. Even if a player is not new to war thunder, they'll be new to top tier, and thus not have the experience with different types of missiles that only show up in later ranks of the tech tree.

You been saying alot of planes been bad, meanwhile Tier IV and V germany LITERALLY HAVE 1 "Decent" PLANE EACH, while being extremely being downgraded in 6.0-6.7. I arleady got the G.91 R/3 and that been helping alot to grind the tree but I do wonder if you have any opinion on the matter...
I think this lead indicator should be switchable on and off. There have been so many moments where I wanted to shoot a priority behind another target with a missile but it was aimlocked to that target so that I missed someone else that was passing in front of me. Also works really bad on headons where you want to land a missile hit but being ready with the gun just in case it misses.
It is switchable on and off, you switch your radar on or off.
Yeah no s**t. Not like there comes moments where you need to shoot a missile and use the gun simultaneously on different targets. Thanks for the great tip, smartass.
if we're going for realism that shot is actually too easy to do currently, the real mig 29 needs a button press to change between being able to shoot cannons or missiles

@@schlong8276 Even using manual wing sweep and keeping them all the way out it doesnt feel consistent. Seems like i still just bleed speed even worse when i use flaps and end up slow and losing the rate fight against jets with much weaker rates like mig 21s

I personally feel like the aim 9Ls are worst atm, never can get a good use out of them unless they aren’t obviously paying attention or stock. Also the radar/ sparrows for F16 and etc feel really bad then it probably should be.
The Falcon is in a weird spot (and is in almost every way outclassed by the MiG-29 now...), it probably needs some love along with the F-14. And Mirage. Maybe the tornado too but I know nothing about it. Also the Aim-7M's are performing totally wrong lol.
R60Ms are far worse
@@AlexVanChezlaw there both just as bad but R60ms are more reactive of the rail so you can get more risky launches off
@@AlexVanChezlaw I don't know, both r60m's and aim-9l's have comparable flare resistance but 60m's turn much faster off the rail and can be used much more reliably at closer range as well as in headon jousts since there is less time to react. The 9L's are good at longer range shots but those offer more reaction time. I personally prefer 60m's having used both.

Theres a control your using. I use to use it but forgot the name of the control . When pulling a high G turn there is a control you can use to keep your turn with out blacking out (you kinda straighten out for a moment) whats the name of that control?

After flying the German MiG-29 a bit and having flown the F-16/F-14 pretty extensively to good effect, I honestly think the fixed FM MiG-29 should have it's R-27ER's removed. The base 27's are already very competent missiles and the ER's just put every other missile to shame, even the Phoenix to a great extent. It's either that or the F-16A gets early amraams but I hardly think that would do well to balance everything else out.
TL;DR - MiG-29 has such good missiles and flight performance that it probably doesn't need the 27ER's to still do well. Those were just a lazy addition.
I dont think ERs should be removed. The normal R27s have abysmal acceleration and way less range, basically completely removing the BVR capabilities of MiG-29. They should rather buff sparrows or add the earliest AMRAAMs with low range to balance out BVR.
@@Julio_Tortillia I was originally thinking they should add AIM-120A's to the falcon but I don't necessarily want more powercreep to ruin other nations. Also, the regular r27r's may be slower but they were still very effective in my experience. They had pretty good range. The mig-29's radar is definitely good enough now that the base 27r's have some reach comparable to other contemporaries.

For some reason, other than the odd crazy undodgable R27, I’ve actually been doing pretty well in the J7E at top tier lately even though I only got it about 2 weeks ago. PL5-Bs certainly help of course, but I’ve had a whole bunch of dogfights against 12.0s and I literally haven’t lost one for some reason, and I feel like I probably should have by now. Is the J7E still the strongest 1v1 plane in the game, or is it just that I’ve played against 12.0 “noobs” every single time? 🤷♂️😂
It’s probably the best top tier dog fighter jet in the game. If you can approach the 4th gen without dying and they started to dog fight with you, it’s normal that you destroyed them

It’s situational, and depends on the aircraft. Often you don’t want to get so slow that you need flaps
