i'm guessing it was mainly special effects explosives for movies, like the ones for grenade explosion.

While they are using plastic explosive (which causes alot of damage)they've added liquid fuel eg petrol to make the explosion look bigger and more powerful. In fact the soot is probably caused by the liquid fuel.
