The only reason he couldn't follow through with some of his plans was because the conservative house and senate refused to work with him for the majority of his 8 years! They held the majority for 6 of those years, power stronger than the president himself. By the way, the only reason why republicans still hold the house is because of gerrymandering, but that's another story all together.

The media has some power in supression yes, but overall, it's impossible to keep it hidden, especially if you have a basic understanding of the internet. He allowed people to have an opinion, kept his cool despite the environment and gracefully diffused the situation. This is a lesson in public relations and communications.
