There are 2 eras of Volta I wish I could have seen... the 03 deloused days, 2 hour sets with 5 songs, Jon Theodore.... and then this era of Volta. 2007-2008 Volta. So fire. Thomas truly kills this.
Pridgen is super talented but he honestly sounded like a train wreck so often that you could almost barely hear the music. Its just constant fills and banging on cymbals. Thats why i liked jon theodore more. He understood the importance of restraint.

Pridgen is crazy great and it’s unfortunate that both Omar & Cedric have said that they weren’t as creatively conducive or inclusive to making the Volta a better band to be in at the time. Nice to hear they admit that they could have done more to keep such potential for more gold around, but it’s also kind of typical for people of that caliber. You can’t have a stage full of Thomas Pridgens, Omar Rodriguez Lopezes, Cedric B Zavalas, or any one else you want to fill that blank in for without it collapsing under its own heaviness which has the same brief lifespan of most Coleoptera (in all phases of growth combined).
Yes! I’ve managed to see them all! I seen Jon, pridgen, Blake, and deantoni... well I guess I didn’t see elitch so I’m wrong. But they remain my favorite band. They came around in my formative years so they will always hold a place in my heart.
Juan holds it down so hard during the Cygnus jam. Everyone gets to go off and he’s there keeping it together.

Agreed with you. I've been listening to them for 16 years and I've always thought Omar's guitar is from another planet. Think the same about Cedric. His vocals are like nothing I've ever heard and I've always regarded him as an alien. Like an angel alien. lol. God I love them

Just saw the TMV reunion tour a few months ago in Richmond.. Cedric sounded pretty great! But Omar was on another level of amazing!

N. Senada I was as close as could be to Cedric's mic stand. I filmed all of wax simulacra, chunks of tetra, and short clips throughout.

@@dylbrochill63 Ah, yes! There's also some footage at the end of Viscera Eyes and the Baphomets bongo solo. Those vids are pretty high quality, so I tried using all of them. Thanks so much for filming and sharing them back in the day. Being there must have been a blast.

Should he either defy the odds and wake up healthy and ready to play soon or rest peacefully until he rests in peace, his bass was the rock for all these crazy players to find their footing on again when they came down out of the chaos. His legacy is legendary...
Alderete is doing rather ok, he's still struggling with his injury and not fully recovered, but been active on social media for quite a long time since his accident last year

In 2004 A Perfect Circle was playing about 3 blocks from where I live in Long Beach so I bought a ticket for less than 20$ a band I had heard much about but never really listened to was opening up for them “Mars Volta” …..I was never the same after that show …saw them at the Hollywood bowl , Greek theatre , Irvine, Long Beach again & great western forum ….I used to live next door to the SST studios in Long Beach so I remember I got to hear Tetragrammaton being played before it came out and I would run into Cedric and Omar which were always really cool…..Always running into Ikey owens back then around Long Beach .
I saw them on that same tour in Indianapolis. Went for APC, left with my mind blown by TMV.
Jesus you lived next door to where TMV recorded Amputechture. That's insane. Ikey worked at Fingerprints afaik.

Most pro-shot footage of TMV comes from festival performances, which were a totally different experience for both the band and the audience. Footage of real shows on the other hand often lacks in sound/video quality. This gig is unique in that it unites the best of both worlds. A true representation of how a TMV concert felt like.

Saw them April 1st, 2008 at the House of Blues in Orlando. Still the greatest concert I've ever been to. They played Ouroboros live, it was next level shit man. I was stoned and tripping though so that might've helped a bit.

And why do you think Pridgen goes into this mess specifically between 1:30:47 to 1:33:02 when the drums on that part are arguably the easiest of the whole song on the record? Not an expert here but I also think he missed a bar and rushed the band into the next part of the song? What about Omar's contempt smiling every time Pridgen trashes the part!?!? So many questions, so few people that I can ask this to! Haha

I think that's right! Feel like I've read it somewhere about him leaving right after recording. I think I like way better Blake Fleming's interpretation (on that video and in the Henry Rollins Show), although I don't understand why he also starts this off-beat improvisation half way through the same part? Don't even know what I'm saying but I've always wanted to be a drummer haha (hope to start soon!)

Yes, Day of the Baphomets is another great example of this liberties you're talking about! Someone in the comments said that he actually had trouble keeping up with the time scales but of course I don't know shit about this. I do know I really like Dave Elitch and I feel this guy did manage pretty well in comparison!

Because the song is called Rapid Fire Tollbooth. It didn't become Goliath until they raised the tempo and added the ending that starts with "I'm starting to feel a miscarriage coming on"

Love The Mars Volta. I like Thomas Pridgen & Tetragrammaton was absolutely amazing! Watching him play that song is like a work of art. Yet he seems "off" when it comes to Meccamputechture - missing the fundamental drum/tom-tom roll of the primary beat. Similarly, he was doing his own thing & out of sync with the band on Day Of The Baphomets. Check out Henry Rollins Show (Blake Fleming) for a great performance of Baphomets.

I love The Mars Volta. But I'm sorry, they just don't sound great live most of the time. That said, they're still the best band to ever come out of Texas.
Lol cedric has a serious problem singing on key when hes doing all that high falsetto stuff. If they ever get back together i hope he just sings lower on key. Hes too old to be doing that high crap.
His falsetto is solid, it’s when he tries to sing the high notes in his chest voice instead where it starts to sound shit. Which is unfortunately almost all of the time.
@@blairhicks7129 comes with age. To me geddy lee from rush had the strongest high full voice i ever heard but he really only had it from like 74-81 or so. After that it just gets too hard once you get into your 30s.
