Ah Travolta! Nothing like the voice of the Lions silent rumble. Really pushing the envolope with this scene.. Man who directed this masterpiece, really some interesting stuff like this in todays movies.
And this is 1976, there's no CNN, there's no CNBC, there's no internet! Now fast forward to today, present time, same situation. How quickly would the modern media make a frenzy over this? In a matter of hours, it'd be biggest story from Boston to Budapest! Ten hostages die, twenty, thirty, BAM BAM, one after another.
Dog Day Afternoon isn't an "action" movie, it's a character study, hence the lack of so called action. Secondy, although you're entitled to your own opinion (although it's stupid), in my eyes and in the eyes of most of the world, Pacino's performance was mind blowingly good and massively convincing.
it's also based on a true story so it isn't some "hollywood" creation. this whole monologue really makes no sense and would make more sense if you look at it as some meta commentary about how dumb swordfish is. i love swordfish, but it's dumb AF
So John Travolta's character never did any research on the actual 1972 crime, watched Dog Day Afternoon, and expected Sonny to kill hostages? The crime really did happen and the movie was following the crime accordingly. I know Travolta's character is not a film critic or historian but you don't have to be either of these to look up the actual crime.
ONG. REALLY. You're taking the 'character' seriously. Whether the character knows that truth or not, he's just making his own sadistic claim on why the government should give into terrorism... why... because right after this scene, a 'blonde' is killed with a bomb strapped to her body. Ironically the same 'blonde' type he mentions in this monologue. Geesh, I need you people to understand theatrics mixed with psychology infused with cynicism.
@wmcdow85 He was talking about the real event, but useing the movie. He saying what if he really wanted to get away with it. Your seeing it as he wants to change the movie. :) He's even telling them, he doesnt want the bus or the plane, its all for misdirection!.
@rocksparadox Yeah, I'm at College (Acting) and alot of people I know have seen Swordfish and always think he's talking about changing the Dog Day movie, they dont know about Dog Day been a real event.
@JJenkins2236 ''people would HAVE understood''.... not could, would or should ''of''... Have you finished highschool yet ? Otherwise I agree with your opinion on explaining it for clarity to the people who don't know about the incident.
REALISM... Dog Day Afternoon, a masterpiece of film-making which adhered to the facts of a true and amazing event, lacked it. Hmm... Recall that what follows this monologue is a film in which a "Black Cell" (formed by J. Edgar Hoover) agent, posing as a regular old criminal mastermind, has his team and hostages strapped with anti-proximity triggered explosives evacuated on a bus carried to the roof of a sky-scraper by a surprise S-64 Arcane before faking his death by blowing it up with an RPG.
Reality is,that many times, unfortunately bad guys do away with it.And the victims deaths, in the hands of psycos,in made easier with the governments "city policy on hostage situations"
John Travolta does a absolute FANTASTIC job as the bad guy in Swordfish. He's such a awesome actor and one of my favorites!
I know. He did an excellent job on this movie and Face/Off. Too bad he didn't do more bad guy movies :-(
You forgot Broken Arrow - he plays an amazing baddie in that film and it is fantastic.
Except he's not a bad guy, he's just the anti hero

When i first saw the WTC attack this film came to mind

Thanks for the speech, Sir, I love it!
Travolta is a genius. Thank goodness for Pulp Fiction, which the suits didn't want him in, reserecting his career when it did.
This was a great movie.
Badass film love it.
Good shit. If i have my way, I'll be using this to audition for my school's play. Glad there was someone on RUclips hosting this.
hahahahahahahahaha

My name is Oronde Baltimore (episode 5) "turn my streetmic on"
Realistically though, I think if they started executing hostages, the police would probably just raid them and then whatever happens happens.
@JJenkins2236 Also, if he only talked about John Wojtowicz, most people wouldnt have clue.

Stupid writing, Dog day afternoon was a true story. That’s why he doesn’t kill hostages , it didn’t happen doh!
Dog Day Afternoon was a mediocre movie. No action, and Pacino wasnt very convincing.
