I was 11 in 68 so not quite hippie age haha but love this song and I remember the red Atlantic label on the 45. God bless Felix. Youre awesome and very talented❤
I prefer the recorded version I'd hear on the radio and I highly recommend THAT version. God, what a summer that was: 1968. People not alive then have no idea what Bobby Kennedy meant to so many people. I'll never forget that morning when my brother woke me up for the last day of school and told me that Kennedy had been shot. I went to the kitchen for my bowl of cereal, and my brother and I slurped our cereal while listening to a small radio on the table. Even my mom let down a tear, and she was not a cryer.
Inviting the artists from the past to your show is a gift to them ~ and to us who grew up with their music. It's also a gift to you both ~ you have the artist there to tell you what the songs were about and the history of the times they were created. PLEASE take advantage of that opportunity to learn ~ Love you two so much!
This song was one of those great 60's anthems that kept so many of us together. The music was so much of our voices. I still listen and sing along to People Got To Be Free. Thanks Felix Cavaliere‼️ ✌️❤️👍🎶🎶🎶
Awesome!! Felix, thank you for introducing your music to a new generation. Like you alluded to, the message of peace, love, and freedom are as relevant today as it was in the '60s. Every generation has the opportunity to create a positive change in this world. Jay and Amber, thank you for your help in carrying the torch of what these artistic pioneers stood for. Continue to keep the music and the message alive! 💯💜❤️🌎🌍🌏✌️
Guys these last three days have been so fun reliving this great time in my life. The Rascals were so much fun, but they were so thought provoking. Just love Felix on that organ and those vocals are fantastic.
my oldest brother used to go and see the Young Rascals play at the barge in Westhampton Beach on Long Island back in the 60's. Unfortunately I was to young to go, but a life long Rascals fan.
Guys I’m so excited that you have Felix on your channel. The Rascals was a seminal band that embodied the 60s decade. I’m 70 years old and was a teenager when all this went down. I was in the 2nd grade when JFK was elected in 1960 and in the 11th grade during Woodstock in 1969 and got to experience everything in between. The Rascals were an integral part of that history. We yearned for freedom. Music called for peace, love and freedom.
I am a little younger than you but I was into the hippie scene when I was in junior high. I never have gone back to the music I was listening to before. That was my Dad’s music. Not a dis, just I wasn’t into it anymore. Dad still sang music from his generation and even from mine but not what I liked.
Felix is a great story teller and he has seen and experienced a lot ..The Rascals will be remembered ... Try to see of you can get John Kay of Steppenwolf as a guest ...He can tell you about a lot of the events that were happening as well in that era and he was a refugee also..
You ought to listen to the studio version of People Got to be Free. It's longer than this version and the lyrics are much easier to hear. Thanks, Felix! We love you!
Listen to the studio version! This live version is fun and it has a lot of energy, but the studio version is much better and with horns! Aside from that, I could listen to Felix talk all day!
I love this song ~ Please take note of the times we lived in during the 1960's ~ ~ John F.Kennedy was assassinated 11-22-63 ~~ Martin Luther King was assassinated on 4-4-1968 ~~ and Bobby Kennedy was assassinated on 6-5-1968. The Kent State (college) shootings were on 5-4-1970. The Viet Nam war ~ Civil Rights ~ Womens Rights ~ These were highly dramatic and radical years of change!
And the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago turned into a riot. The convention happened in late August '68, the exact time this song was #1 in America.
@@jdw5678 ~ i remember driving home from my grandparents house and seeing the fires that were started during that convention. It was pretty frightening.
As appreciated as the Rascals are, I think they are still under appreciated. Incredible and legendary live performers. Felix is such a brilliant musician.
Keep bringing Felix back!! I'd love to hear his take on "Groovin'", "A Beautiful Morning", and their lovely ballad "How Can I Be Sure". He's a great story teller, and these are 3 of their most popular songs. You will both love these songs!!
People Got To Be Free was my favorite Rascals' song, though they really had many of them. I like the way they brought the song Oh Happy Day into the performance. Excellent! Like Jazz and Soul organist Jimmy Smith, who needs a bass guitar when the band has a great organist who can play the bass on the foot pedals! Excellent!
I love the rascals. I fell in love them. The first time I heard them. This particular song was so important for the times. It’s still important all these years later! People got to be free that has never gone away. Thank you for writing these songs.❤
What a great combination. Great song writing, one of the best voices in rock and an unbelievable drummer. This song has been in my collection since I bought the 45 single in '69.
Great song, still relevant today. What a treat having Felix share his memories of The Rascals and these songs. When you get back to the Rascals, "A Beautiful Morning", "How Can I Be Sure" and "It's Wonderful" !!! edit- Felix played keys with his hands and bass with his feet. Guess that's where Geddy Lee learned that trick from!!
He is fascinating! I can listen to his stories forever. I'd not heard this live version of the song and, like you Jay, I truly appreciate the rawness and energy of it.
Felix is being humble -- he didn't mention that this song was #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart for five straight weeks in 1968 (Aug-Sept). That's *huge* , one of the biggest hits that year, and it made a major cultural impact. The Beatles were big fans of the group, and the Rascals opened for them on several dates, including the famous NYC Shea Stadium performance.
Saw The Rascals perform this classic July 1968 at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia..it was their latest song...great performance!!! This video is from The Music Scene show.
❤Felix Cavaliere ❤ I love The Rascals!! Also a shout-out to Alan Freed from days gone by, for playing this music style, and referring to it as "rock and roll" from my NE Ohio city of Cleveland back in 1951. Love ya, Felix!! Thanks for putting your message out there back then, "People Got to Be Free". ❤🤍💙
What a legend! Love the Rascals, and hearing Felix's stories! This song was definitely an anthem for the times! 1968 was a very turbulent year of riots, civil unrest and assassinations. With the DNC coming up next week in Chicago, we can't help but remember the violent/crazy1968 DNC! Great interview and reaction!
Some years ago, a radio station I worked at was hosting a concert and Felix was on the bill. I got the lucky assignment of picking him up at the airport. He was so kind and thoughtful and actually interested in hearing what I had to say. It's a great memory, thank you Felix!
It’s great that you have Felix on you podcast. The Young Rascals were a great 60s band. Their drummer Dino Danelli was one of the greatest drummers in rock history.
I'm 41, I got deep into the Rascals back in my 20s. One of my favorite songs is one that doesn't get as much attention, Carry Me Back. Ya'll will love it.
RFK was assassinated the night of my Senior Prom. We were at the local amusement park for our "Afterglow" a party financed by our high school after Prom when I heard the news. Our whole class was devastated.
I'm really loving these shows with the creators, especially the ones from the 60s. One thing I liked that some people might not have noticed was that the album cover (a jigsaw puzzle of the band) was used as the backdrop for the stage performance, but with a number of the pieces missing. I don't know if that means something, but it was a VERY sixties design. I loved it.
Thanks again for bringing us these great creators, In the last Draft drawing I was # 1😮 but lucky I was only 17, songs like these helped us protest the war! Peace✌️ and Love❤️ your 70 year old forever hippie Gary😊 great reaction 🤣
Felix was in Joey Dee & the Starlighters before the Rascals. Their big hits were "The Peppermint Twist" and a cover version of "Shout." "I joined Joey Dee and went to Europe. We were on tour there with the Beatles, and that was before they made it over here. That really started my own little magical mystery tour. After the Beatles made it here, I said to the guys in the band that we should start our own group. I said, “Let’s stop being sidemen.” The thing with the outfits was all at the behest of club owners. Back when we started, clubs required a tie and jacket. If you wanted to work, you dressed up. We tried to find a way around it, like those ridiculous outfits on our first LP cover. Then things changed so dramatically. Audiences wanted us to dress like them, or show them how to dress. Such a transformation, and it happened so quickly.
What a treat to have Felix Cavalieri on your channel, telling his backstory & insight into the songs and times. He speaks highly of others' singing skills, but his is right up there with them, and uniquely recognizable. He seems like a real down to earth person that you can sit and talk with for hours. When I was driving my little VW bug to school back then , and 'Beautiful Morning' would come on the radio, I was on top of the world. Thank you Rascals.
I was 11 in 1968 when this song came out. My brother, 13, brought home 1968's "Time Peace: The Rascals' Greatest Hits." The 1st AM station in our town to go Rock was playing the daylights out of The Rascals. I guess that make me a fan for 56 years. Other than The Beatles, the Young Rascals' Felix Cavaliere is probably the 1st rock band member whom I easily recognized and whose name I knew. Thanks Felix for being such a great part of my musical life!!!
Dear Rob Squad, I want to thank you for being so respectful of thr artists. I am sick of watching "reviewers" that say things like, why is dressed like that? What is with his voice? Who is she? If she was a good singer, I would know about her. Respect and friendship to you both.

One of the best bands ever from my youth.😊😊😊😊
Dear Rob Squad, I want to thank you for being so respectful of thr artists. I am sick of watching "reviewers" that say things like, why is dressed like that? What is with his voice? Who is she? If she was a good singer, I would know about her.
Respect and friendship to you both.
