i just spent 2 hours looking for this exact video. thanks trying to figure out how to properly run two speed controllers with one receiver. Also, i like the battery connection idea.
Thanks dude! While many guys have done twin VXL setups, the power connector was my own idea. I got tired of 1 battery always running down first and then 1 esc/motor going into low voltage cutoff too soon. Even though the power adapter makes things a bit more complicated, it certainly takes care of that problem. :)
It may be worth adding a note that when using that connector you made and only one battery you should cover the other connector so it doesnt short out against something metal in the truck.
Glad i found you dude... Great info and video👋👋👋👋👋👋 very informative and cleared the cob webs in my brain as electronics scared me but with your video it showed me now feel confident... TY look forward to more👋👋👋👋👋👋👋
@jetlag2222 oh I do know what they are capable of. Nice cool runs with insane speed and torque. I put one in my slash two wheel drive because I was always burning up a velineon one way or another. My truck has actually never handled better in all the time I have had it and now I can actually depend on it to run right.
That is correct. cogging is a common problem with unsensored brushless motors at slow speed under pressure. and yes with this system you will get more cogging at very slow speed than with a brushed motor. If I could find a sensored brushless motor that was waterproof and an ESC to drive it, you would have seen that in this video instead. :) But since I don't spend much time crawling with my summit, this combo works very well.
Yes that is correct. The other male connector will be "live" so if I was actually going to run it that way, I would put tape around it to keep it from shorting out as you mentioned. I never run it that way as I always use 2 batteries. If I ran with 1 battery often, I would just not put a 2nd male connector on the adapter. I am hoping that anyone that attempts this has a basic understanding of power, and would know to not leave that 2nd male connector flopping around. lol.
You would think people would be smart enough. But even people with years of experience make mistakes :) There is a local racer that went home after a race and left his lipo plugged into the charging wires and unplugged the other end (bullet/banana style connectors) from the charger. Threw it in a metal toolbox and bye bye lipo, safety bag, charging wires, and other items in the toolbox. He has probably been in the hobby longer than I have been alive.
Brother, this is fucking amazing man!! I love what you've done. and I appreciate the fact that you're sharing this knowledge dude much appreciate that . This is crazy power.
Hi Andrew. I'm not selling anything. Except maybe the idea that RC is way cool. lol. I have a full time job that has nothing to do with RC and this is just my hobby. I don't promote products to get sales, I just show off RC products that I like myself. If anyone buys them, that's their decision. Thanks for the comment and Hi to all my RC buddies in Russia!
lol. I should have waited to post them till I had both done. I uploaded the 1st one while I was still editing the 2nd part. So I had to finish it before I could upload. Thanks for watching.
I don't know exactly what is wrong, but a good place to start is check the programming of your ESC. Sometimes they lose their settings. You manual can give you the exact steps to reset your ESC back to default, or if you can't find your manual if you call Traxxas support, they will help you reset the ESC. Then try it again and see if it's back to normal.
Once again, as I said at the beginning this build isn't for everyone. If it makes you uncomfortable or you don't think you can do it because it's too complicated. Then just don't. :) Thanks for subscribing and watching my vids and commenting. I appreciate that. But I stand firm on my position that this is very doable by almost anyone if they want to (I have a 12 yr old cousin that did this on his own without even asking me how.).
You're welcome! Hope it helps with your own project. I had so many guys ask me how I was running twin 3500s that I decided to just make a video on it. :)
I run both. For slow crawling and mudding I use 2S lipos because it gives me better control at slower speeds without as much cogging. When I want to go fast or do jumps I use 3S lipos.
lol. They don't need me, they have some very smart guys and gals working there already. I'm just an enthusiastic amateur. But thanks for the comment! :)
comments like this actually make me laugh. Do you know how many times I've been told "that will never work" or "that's crazy"? And do you know how many great videos I have because I didn't pay any attention? lol. As I said at the beginning of the video, if this makes you uncomfortable, just don't do it. these are the same motors that have been running my SUMMIT for over 2 years in mud, snow, water, etc. Go watch my last 2 years of summit videos, then tell me they don't work in water. :))
hey jet lag this is a tip just for looks on the summit if you have ever heard of the stuff called rit dye and i took the outside fake bead lock off of my stock summit tires and dyed them black and put them back on and they look so sick
I have answered this question over 1000 times already. Talk to youtube, they are the ones blocking the videos for mobile download - not me. And it's not just for apple devices, it's ALL mobile devices. I NEVER block any of my videos for anyone. Once again talk to youtube if you don't like it. Just to show you how crazy their rules are... I uploaded both part 1 and part 2 of this video EXACTLY the same way. It has the same music too. The 1st part they didn't block, but part 2 they did.
These kinds of videos take a LONG time to film and edit. And I only do them when I have something interesting to talk about or show. But thank you. I'll make more whenever I have something interesting or unusual to show you guys. :))
This video has given the most information on how to modify the dual motor summit/erevo. Thank you so much man!!!! One question though. Could this be ran in series to make it 4s or even 6s if the esc was capable?
Well I already had both VXL3500 power systems from other projects so I didn't spend very much. But if you were starting from scratch you would end up spending about $300-$350 for the new VXL3500s and ESCs. The motor mount and the pinion gears are maybe $20 all together.
is there any reason you used the traxxas motor mount over the kershaw one you had in the summit? Awesome video as usual. Been waiting for this one for a long time.
Comments like this always make me scratch my head.... if you already know how to do it, why did you watch or comment?? And if you didn't know how to do it, then why did you skip thru the whole video? And if you didn't like it... why did you watch it or bother to comment? It's a mystery to me. If you don't like my videos... just don't watch them. I'm ok with that. :))
All sensorless brushless motors cog at slow speed because the esc doesn't have any way to tell exactly what position the rotor is in. So at extremely slow speeds brushed motors would be better. I don't do much crawling with my summit, so it doesn't affect me. And my summit rates very high. one of my favorite trucks.
Awesome video, I am building this setup but ran into a problem. I have the servo y adapter for the ESCs, but only one turns on, not both as you mentioned in your video. I tried turning just the other ESC on and only the one I press the power button on works, the other stays off. Any advice?
How bad is the cogging when you are going slow and trying to "crawl"? I bought an E revo with this set up and it was a big pain to get things working well. The ESC's were starting to fail from not having the parallel battery connector. I got rid of that and got the Kershaw dual 700 HO's. Where does the Summit rank in your Traxxas arsenal? Thanks.
Yes. :) In fact the motors I use in this video are the same motors that were running in water bash video. And 1 of the ESCs. Sadly the other ESC is new because the old one let all the magic smoke out. lol.
So with that ( 2x 3S batteries w 5000mah), youre doing on each ESC 3S 5000mah, voltage on circuit: 3s, amperage on circuit : 10000mah « wich is separate perfectly betwin the 2 esc's. Please correct me if im wrong
so with a parallel adapter like that, while running only 1 battery wouldnt you have a live male connector open? Ive never run an adapter like that, but my past experience would tell me that you not have an opening making for a short, no? Maybe if youre only running one battery you could make a cap from a female plug for that other side?
Hey Jetlag2222 I'm thinking about selling some of my RC stuff and getting another summit but I want to upgrade the power first thing, which is better dual VXL Brushless systems or the new Waterproof MMM? I would like to be able to still use the rock crawl and diff lockers if possible, I've heard the MMM screws up the diff lockers and people don't use diff lockers with the MMM setup on the summit. So can you give me some advice on what to do? Thanks.
hey Jetlag, thanks for the video, very well explained, but haven´t you got any problems with your diffs..? that´s the only thing that makes me think if i should do this conversión...
Question? @3:30ish b4 your done with the esc wires . Is it possible to say that each esc could be set to different settings? Let's say the three options the vxl has beginner /no break / and break and reverse full throttle.
2 things you should be very aware of when watching this video... 1 - this was recorded 8 yrs ago.... RC technology changes very quickly so it's likely you won't even be using this specific ESC anymore anyway. 2 - Yes... is is possible that 1 could be set to beginner mode and 1 could be set to break/full throttle or whatever. I am assuming a basic level of competence with anyone that follows these instructions. If you don't know how to change that on your ESC so they match... you probably shouldn't be trying to do this anyway. :) Thx for watching.
when u said in the part 1 video...i have turned off the ESC by holding the btton...if i start to turn it off by disconnecting it...will it have a smaller chance of shortening or is the damage done?...i need ur reply jetlag!!!!!!!!!!
Yes lipo's get swollen when they are overused and too many amps are pulled out of them too fast. I have used and abused many lipos. lol. when they get too swollen to charge I dispose of them and get more. Be careful of using a swollen lipo because it may explode or catch fire. I have seen both happen... so be careful.
the esc's communicate that they have power, but what about things like thermal shutdown. if the esc on the body mount were to get more air and cool better than the side mounted one will that thermal shut down also shut down the other esc?
When I try to play some of your videos on my iPhone or ipad it won't let me play them on these devices. It isn't every video but it seen like its the ones I really wanna watch. Such as your part 2 in your summit vl conversion. Please help if possible, thanks
The reason was that I wanted to give people a traxxas part number for the motor mount, as opposed to making them buy it from a 3rd party. Either would work, but not everyone has a kershaw motor mount laying around. :)
Planing on doing something like this on my E-Revo that has the dual motor mount.Have the idea to using a pair of Traxxas (Castle) ET2400 motors with Traxxas ET-3s ESC's. Thanks this has helpt a lot!
Hi I have an E Maxx 3908 with the same duel vxl set up. The problem is that i feel like there is more power in reverse then there is in forward driving. Do you have any idea why?
Jetlag!! ! I bought a ESC Y-Harness off eBay, Two Females, one male but one of the females has only the black and whit connected to it. Can you tell me why? Imm trying to do the Dual Velineon System set-up on my E-Maxx -Thanks ;)
Yes, however sensorless brushless motors tend to "cog" or jerk at low speeds. so if you spend most of your time crawling, then you would be better off with brushed motors or sensored brushless motors than with these.
There is actually many different ways this could be done. lol. That was just the way I chose to handle it because it doesn't require any modification to the ESC or the batteries so they can both be used with other models as well. :)
And no, I don't have anything against apple devices. In fact, if you try to watch this on a MACbook it works fine. It just doesn't work for mobile devices like iPad, iPhone and Droid because they blocked it for mobile downloads. Once again, this is RUclips doing this... NOT ME.
I'm always surprised at the negative reaction to velineon motors. I have dozens of different kinds of motor/esc combos including the mamba monster and many others. The velineon combos stand up very well against them in 1/10 and 1/8th size trucks. I still don't understand why people don't like them. lol.
you will know immediately if you have a problem because it will short out and smoke. And possibly catch on fire. So if that hasn't happened to you, then you have gotten lucky and it is fine. However, from now on, you will be much safer to unplug the battery.
Dude this is so cool ! ' could I make this work on my old traxxas that already has 2 motor's ? even though I'm running 2 5.4 3000 mah nimh batt. packs ' or would I have to go with a set of pack's like ur running ' also would I have to run bigger motor's than say a 21 T 550 brush motor set up ? I cant afford to put an entire new trans 'diff's & axial 's . Dude for what that would cost me I be better off buying a NEW TRUCK !! & I would love to do that IF I had the $
no. There isn't enough room to mount (2) motors on the spur gear. Also Traxxas doesn't make a twin motor mount for the stampede 4x4. So you would have to make it yourself which would require quite a bit of work, and i still think there isn't enough room.
Yes I was hoping watchers would be smart enough to figure that out. lol. Or if you always just use 1 battery, then build the adapter with only 1 male plug. :)
sure, if I wanted to twist my powertrain completely in half. rofl. I love the mamba monster and have several of them in my E-REVO, RC8e etc. Do you know what Mamba monster power systems are good for? Making money for your local LHS when you have to buy more parts everytime you run. rofl. But don't get me wrong, I love the mamba monster combo. but this truck would be WAY overpowered with dual mambas. :)) (however a single mamba works great!)
does having more than one motor better the car? does it double the kv? orrr...does it give it more torque? any benefit in doing this over doing a mamba monster aside from being water proof?
i just spent 2 hours looking for this exact video. thanks trying to figure out how to properly run two speed controllers with one receiver. Also, i like the battery connection idea.

jetlag2222 Is there a part number for the gear cover?
@jetlag2222 excellent video and great explanation. the power connector is probably the best idea ive seen for a setup like that
It may be worth adding a note that when using that connector you made and only one battery you should cover the other connector so it doesnt short out against something metal in the truck.

Thank you for this video series. It was very informative, and answered all my questions for running duel VXL's in a E-Revo.

Do you have to tape up the Y adaptor and receiver so that they are waterproof? Or was it just to help keep things together? Thank you
Did you aver tried to connect in parallel the balance plugs also? I do it with with my XS2P on my boat.

Was this the set up you had when you did the water bash video?
You're welcome. It would work great on either. :)
what about calibration on the esc do you have to do both individually or do they both sun together when you go into programming mode ?
did you have any issue with the Low speed. i heard that when crawling in very low speed the brushless motor will have uneaven throttle.
When you turn it on do you have to power both escs at the same time or can you turn them on one at a time?
what size spur gear and matching pinions did you use for this setup, or recommend to start out at? I'm running 3s lipo mainly bashing, and trails.

Imm trying to do the Dual Velineon System set-up on my E-Maxx

can you do this with the 1 16th scale traxxas vehicles?
Yes, however sensorless brushless motors tend to "cog" or jerk at low speeds. so if you spend most of your time crawling, then you would be better off with brushed motors or sensored brushless motors than with these.

how whould you run dual motors with one esc
how have the diffs held up?
On my list of things to do
And no, I don't have anything against apple devices. In fact, if you try to watch this on a MACbook it works fine. It just doesn't work for mobile devices like iPad, iPhone and Droid because they blocked it for mobile downloads. Once again, this is RUclips doing this... NOT ME.
Will this work with a stampede 4x4 vxl?
could it still crawl? like on low speeds?
i did this in my emaxx and i can only run 1 servo if i thy 2 the car will not move have any ideas?
Go for it man!
I love your summit lol
Thank you i guess i'll have too buy another one
do u run 2 or 3s lipos
Can you make an old emaxx waterproof
I'm always surprised at the negative reaction to velineon motors. I have dozens of different kinds of motor/esc combos including the mamba monster and many others. The velineon combos stand up very well against them in 1/10 and 1/8th size trucks. I still don't understand why people don't like them. lol.
I don't know why but it's wrong. you need all wires on each leg of the Y harness or it won't work.
you will know immediately if you have a problem because it will short out and smoke. And possibly catch on fire. So if that hasn't happened to you, then you have gotten lucky and it is fine. However, from now on, you will be much safer to unplug the battery.
Want to make sure u unhook one of the red wires off the esc can't run 2 bec
how do u make a y conecter ?
Excellent. That's why I did it. :))
Man I never would have thaught of that !!
Yes it is. :)
& I would love to do that IF I had the $
I've burned more than one. I've been running traxxas trucks a long time. lol. thx for the comment.
no. There isn't enough room to mount (2) motors on the spur gear. Also Traxxas doesn't make a twin motor mount for the stampede 4x4. So you would have to make it yourself which would require quite a bit of work, and i still think there isn't enough room.
the plastic drive shafts can handle dual vxl
Yes I was hoping watchers would be smart enough to figure that out. lol. Or if you always just use 1 battery, then build the adapter with only 1 male plug. :)
We are the iOS users cant watch this? Do u have any problem with Apple? Asking aşkıma
sure, if I wanted to twist my powertrain completely in half. :)) (however a single mamba works great!)
lol. that is the hope. Thanks!
great job
too bad he didnt short the battery end that wasnt plugged into a battery... would have made for a good show.
+jeremy.n79 I know... I was cringing every time he'd bump the connector.
That exposed connector was driving me nuts I kept waiting for it to touch the motor and short out everything WHY DIDNT YOU DRIVE IT
does having more than one motor better the car? does it double the kv? orrr...does it give it more torque?
any benefit in doing this over doing a mamba monster aside from being water proof?
