While your paintings and work are superb, what draws me to these videos time and again is the teaching style, talking through the work so well. It's just fabulous.
Just pushing the rock in foreground and the small fall of water back made such a difference. Makes very clear your explanation about 'inviting the viewer in'. Thanks.
True. Art involves a surprising amount of planning and problem solving. The compositional concepts here are the same used by architects and interior designers.
Once again I realise how little I know, but this is perfect Andrew, I can’t thank you enough. It’s the behind the scenes work that really counts. I refer a lot of things to plastering, as it’s the only skill I’ve mastered (ish), always room for improvement. But if I haven’t done all the prep first, smashing out loose areas of wall, gluing taping cracks etc, then the plaster would fall off or just look terrible. So very insightful, and what I love, is I feel how genuine you are, and are not trying to deliberately hold back information that frustrates us novices. Awesome work buddy, can’t wait to see the finished painting. Have a great day 😃
The way you explain it makes me feel like I can do it too. Such a great teacher who inspires more than just teach. I'm binge watching your videos and I can't get enough. You are the turning point in my life Andrew. You really are the best.
Andrew As you know I’m not a painter, just a customer who really appreciates your great work. It’s facinating to learn about the work you put into your painting. The results don’t just pop out on the canvas. There is a lot of work behind what you do. Cheers
Hello Andrew. You are the most professional and disciplined artist I ever seen, I am a newbie, I started painting only 18 month ago, I learned so much from you, I cant do all your process but I'm trying bit by bit, like doing the little sketches before the final one to see what works better. I thank you so much for your teaching and for sharing your vast knowledge with us. You are in my view a very generous teacher. I'm always looking forward to your video. Thank you again.
Outstanding! It is painfully obvious to me that I not only need to be more intentional but also become more patient with the entire process. It's a marathon not a sprint. The quality of your work proves that it's worth the extra time and effort because it's not only about technique. There are many talented artists but everyone isn't able to deeply move viewers. Thank you, Andrew!
I used to not pay attention to composition when I was in my first year of art in high school. Now in my second year it’s my top priority, and it makes me so happy when my composition is nice :) my teacher says that a good composition looks good from all angles too thanks so much for sharing I’m going to use your video for all my paintings and art from now on:))) thank you so much! 😁
Before I watched the whole video I thought your comment was referring to the plein air sketch he had made and that was already pretty amazing. The colorstudy was incredible
Excellent!!! We see that the detailed ground work-thumbnails, larger sketch, detailed larger sketch, and color study's-all work to improve a composition before making those fatal errors on a large painting that we have spent so much time on. Your process was so helpful to learn, but your photoshop skills-that will take us a lot of work to be able to use that tool. Thank you for sharing with us this valuable lesson!!! I want more.
There is so much in this short tutorial! I would have thought your first pass at Mount Talbot was great - until you pointed out the problems with the vectors! Then when you flipped the river, the improvement was incredible! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us all Andrew!
Andrew, I’m absolutely blown away by your talent and generosity in sharing your tips and techniques. You are without a doubt one of the most brilliant realist artists working today; every painting I’ve seen you do reflects both careful thought and planning and a truly magnificent, skilful execution. You have an eye for beauty and majesty in the natural world, and your subject matter always reflects that purity. Thank you so much for your contribution to the art world and the beginning painter community! The choices you’ve made here in this video regarding composition are EXQUISITE, and truly lift each painting to a higher level, but I assure you those choices are not obvious to most people. They are only apparent in hindsight once they have been demonstrated - you are someone with the vision and natural talent to see beforehand what could make an image better and then boldly make adjustments. I am awed by all your videos but I was absolutely impressed by this. I will try to follow your example and painting advice and continue to be inspired by you!! Thank you again. Xx
This is so good, Andrew! Composition is such an important part of any painting (or any artwork for that matter), but there is so little information on it. One can find all sort of information on colours, brushes, materials, etc., etc., but almost nobody talks about the composition. You are not just talking about it, not just explaining, you are showing, which is incredibly helpful. Everyone can see what a difference it makes - to think about the composition and try different things. Thank you so much!
Andrew this speaks right to my need at this point. Working from photos trying not to come up with a finished painting looking exactly like the shot. Thank you so much for sharing. I absolutely love your art and your videos!! They are a real education!
Andrew, Andrew, Andrew! I see the thumbnail sketches and think “ that’s neat”. Then I see the detailed pencil on watercolour paper and I think “ that’s a great drawing!” Then I get distracted by the plain air study and think:” that’s great looking “. Then I look away for a bit and when I come back I see an awesome painting ,,,, and then you say “ I’m happy with the COLOURSTUDY. Now I can start the painting.” That’s too much 😁 I don’t give a lot of feedback comments but that was just.... 👍👍👏👏👏👏👏
Yesterday I watched your 'golden ratio' video.. and today m watching this video, loved the process of composition. I saw how you achieved the G.R. in this work.. it's simply great👌 You are a good teacher❤️
I really appreciate the momentum you carry throughout your composition stage. I tend to drive myself crazy when composing particular scenes that have the least amount of direct reference. I’ll rabbit hole so bad, to the point where it’s almost impossible to even recognize if it’s pleasing to look at or not. Anyway man, I really appreciate you making your videos available like this.
it is so true what you say about drawing to improve, you inspire me !thank you.I love all your generous tutorials by the way. you are a very convincing teacher !
I learned so much from your video as usual and especially your comment about connecting and memorizing the landscape to now feel it. Brilliant. So much information packed into a brief video. My sincere thanks for what you do. Love your work!
Over and over I find myself leaning into these presentations, getting closer and closer to the image. The narrative skills here are some of the best I've ever heard. Andrew does a variation of a brilliant teaching technique I was exposed to many years ago. Seikichi Odo ( 1923 - 2002 ) was an Okinawa Karate master with whom I studied. His teaching technique, which I had never seen before, and that I found so valuable, was to set boundaries on an action so as to focus on success. He would show a simple action, over correct in each direction, and then say "Not this way, or this way...but THIS way". I see Andrew's thumbnail planning sketches as a variation of 'Not this way, or this way...but THIS way" I've seen sketchbook work before, but this is the first time I've thought of it in this way, and it changes the way I look at the work.
I've been using photo shop in my paintings since 1997 and it is a wonderful tool to have. One thing I will never have is your discipline and patience to do the preliminary work. Nice video Andrew!
This is perfect! I do photography and Photoshop and I’m currently learning to oil paint using my photos as reference. Thank you so much! I can now use Photoshop on a whole new level! Thank you so much!
This ended up being one of my favorite landscapes you've ever done. The richness of that foreground in contrast with the cloud covered mountains is off the chart. Spending all that time in prep work is well worth it.
I learned so much in this video. Thank you! Usually, i start painting without thinking much about composition. You thought me to think and plan before using my brushes.
I’ve learnt more from you about painting than any other artist. It’s fair to even say that I still wouldn’t have painted a single painting had you not started your RUclips channel.
Andrew, you’ve made me realise yet again how important a composition is. The difference you made to the forest painting is just phenomenal. Your sketch looks like a finished product! And the colour study! What can I say?
My man, you are the Steve Irwin of painting. I really appreciate how much emphasis you put on composition. This is what separates decent art from good art, and good art from the great. I've noticed that many amateur artists (and even some "professional" artists) seem to neglect composition, and focus most of their efforts on rendering more and more detail, as if that alone makes a great piece. A novice artist can easily get too caught up on JUST trying to recreate a realistic image or one with a lot of detail without considering the principles of composition. It wasn't until that I could draw realistic figures and objects that I realized that this alone was not enough if I wanted to create interesting, dramatic scenes. I began looking at some of my favorite images to understand why I was drawn to them so much - for example: Caspar David Friedrich was one of my favorite landscape painters BECAUSE he composes his paintings in such a way that they appear profound, atmospheric, poetic, and symbolic. That is what separated him from the common landscape painter, not just his technical skill at laying down the paint.
Thanks for showing the importance of gathering your resources and planning out your composition before painting. I often find that my lack of patience for the process is what leads to my lackluster results.
Absolutely delightful video! Discovered your videos on youtube a couple of weeks ago, and now you are my go to guru for problems I stumble on in my own little efforts! Really appreciate your sharing your processes. I am going to try thumbnail sketching for the landscape I started just yesterday! Must say this video has come at the right time for me. Thanks a ton Andrew!
Beautiful, to be honest I was looking at the first colour study thinking leave it alone, it’s amazing, then, you you changed the river direction and WAOW, Amazing,
Yet another wonderfully helpful and insightful video. Andrew, you have such a great eye where you see potential improvements that many of us do not. Thank you for putting together this video for us and thanks also to the artist who allowed his painting to be critiqued. His painting was already a pretty nice painting and yet you helped bring it up to a whole other level. Love your videos!!! Please keep making more.
Thanks Andrew. Patience is a virtue to a successful painting and you have reminded me in this video that preparation and questioning your visual concepts are things we forget because you just want to do the painting. Stepping back is important and I am going to put this into practice. 🏴
You amaze me with every new painting Andrew. I would of never thought to change the streams direction. And yes it did make a difference! Cant wait to see the final painting!
Andrew, mate, thank you so much for this very detailed tutorial. It confirmed to me that I have so much to learn which is both scary and exciting at the same time.
Thanks for sharing some of your thought processes, I usually don't plan much and just start painting. Maybe it's time to learn a little more Photoshop!
WOW!!! Thank you Andrew. This is an eye-opener for me. IT is truly magnificent. The detail and time that you put in to get to that point that you say "Now I'm ready". Lots of work and practice that lies ahead for me.
Anndyyyy! THANK YOU for this - I appreciate your work and service. That critique helped many of us - and what you do isn’t taken for granted. Sharpening my skills!!! And thank you for continuing to push artists away from copying reference photos. We aren’t bound to them at all.
I prefer the first version - the one with the river on the left side. The painting is so calm when it's there and I love it becouse it matches what I'm looking for in real life. Kinda matches my soul. And it's different from what usually artists try to do -they are usually making the composition more dynamic. But look, there is a huge amount of beauty in that less dynamity too. I like how quiet the river is on that first version. Although you are kinda right - there is some blank space on the right then and feels pretty weird. But landscapes in real life aren't completly perfect so I think we can sometimes let our paintings be like them. However I love it no matter where the river is, your work is increadible!
This is amazing and came out at the right time! I'm also working on a big project of an Indian rainy day and trying to perfect my composition. Already have three oil sketches and some heavily photoshopped photos. This method was followed by my own hero John Constable. He made numerous sketches before getting on with the final biggy. He didn't have photos but he had sketches and the method is the same. Your video makes me wanna look at mine and maybe repaint some areas. I don't want to be in a hurry on this one.
Hey Andrew, just recently got into your podcasts and am hoping another one is coming soon. I very much enjoyed the talk you had with Virgil and I am anxiously awaiting a new episode. I especially like how technical you get, which is something I find alot of art podcasts lack. It really feels like a podcast for artists.
This was incredibly useful video!I've always underestimate the process of preparation for a painting and the work behind the great composition. After seeing from where you started and the end result, which was really far better then the first study, I'm simply amazed! Thank you for shearing this! I impatiently wait for every video you upload.
Thankyou so much for the time you put into these inspiring video's, blown away as usual . I can watch these all day I feel I learn so much and just want to say when I look at any of your work I feel I'm transported to the place in the painting so much so I can almost feel the air on my face and smell all the native scents of the scene. Thank you for the journey Andrew
I really can't thank you enough for being this generous with your time and efforts and creating this video. I've always loved your content but this is seriously gold. It's amazing that we get so much insight directly from a professional like you. Thanks again
I, somehow, thought that I could just skip that step...but NO! It is an important one, especially on bigger paintings. I did scrapped a few paintings for wanting to just dive into it to quickly. Thanks for your help!
I'm really glad I found your page!! I'm just starting to dive into oils, but I've found many things here very helpful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I look forward to seeing this when it's finished.
As usual just what I needed. Thank you so much for your generosity Andrew. I have learned alot with this video. I have been designing my pictures more and not just copying the photo. Enjoy taking my own pics too. Allowing myself the license to do so has opened up another world now. Cheers!!!
Thank you so much for sharing your thought process during these important steps. I have noticed that all great artists spend time in these steps, and I often skip them. Can you please make a video of how you paint your clouds?
This is so true👍👍... composing a painting is surely the key to a great image. This is a great tip. I have tried a composition using a few photos I took and mixed them to create a composition using sketchbook on my computer editing the image to my liking ...It surely helped...still painting it though... Your techniques have really helped me through a lot of paintings... The process of planing a painting with the 4+1 Thumbnail sketches and then a formal shadow study surely helps and then midway using the computer to workout a few glitches. Though I am a watercolorist your techniques have helped me do lesser blunders... Blunders do help in learning beyond 🙂
Wonderful video and that final drawing alone was a stunningly detailed work of art in itself. I love the way you explain things you have such a great way of making the information clearly explained and your process justified so well and I am looking forward to having a go with oil paint but in the meantime I will implement what I have learned from this video to the mediums I use now
GDay Andrew. Thank you for showing so clearly the importance that the thumbnail sketches have in arriving at a pleasing and satisfying composition -20/20 hindsight :)
Wow, truly amazing quality of paintings on your channel and teaching! You are very impressive, I really enjoy these videos, you've given me hope in youtube again!
Thanks for this insight. I like the comment that you said early in the video, that paintings just "happen". I think this is a mistake the beginner makes a lot, I know I just want to jump in really fast to start painting and then get frustrated fast when the composition isn't going well.
While your paintings and work are superb, what draws me to these videos time and again is the teaching style, talking through the work so well. It's just fabulous.
Just pushing the rock in foreground and the small fall of water back made such a difference. Makes very clear your explanation about 'inviting the viewer in'. Thanks.
Looks much better after changing. I still feel that branch in the middle block the view of the nice waterfall.

Thank you! and I'll be back very soon.
Flipping the water made a big difference . Great video tips thanks for sharing
Excellent video Andrew. This is my weak point, not enough planning ahead of time, so I don't have to change or abandon work.
I really can't thank you enough for being this generous with your time and efforts and creating this video. I've always loved your content but this is seriously gold.
It's amazing that we get so much insight directly from a professional like you. Thanks again
Cheers Yana! I appreciate it!
Incredibly informative . Thank you Andrew. Much appreciated 👏👏👏
Your color study is better than any landscape I think I’ve ever done haha, amazing work man.
That was fantactic. Great changes to improve the original painting. Loved it.
Andrew, this a terrific video. I have no problem with the idea of adjusting a composition. I just don't know how to decide what changes to make.
Thank you so much for this video . It was so helpful , now I see more clearly the importance of this design process 👌🏻👍🏻
Wonderfully generous and inspirational teaching...thank you so much
Almost magic! What a difference just beautiful ❤
Oh man you are awesome. Feel like I am starting over , learning my craft
Great video. There's always something new to learn from watching you. Thanks.
Wow, truly amazing quality of paintings on your channel and teaching! You are very impressive, I really enjoy these videos, you've given me hope in youtube again!
Fantastic clip Andrew. Thank you for sharing more skills and techniques for other artist's. Hope to see the big painting of mount Talbot.
I like how he calls a finished painting a colour study
I really enjoyed this video. It's great to see your process and how you think before you start a big painting. Thank you sharing this, Andrew!
Another absolutely top notch video. I am learning so much!
You ARE THE BEST on You Tube, can’t thank you enough x🎨🎨🎨
The good thing abt doing wat u love is that no matter how long the process is and tym taken u'll work till u produce good results
I have found your videos engaging, entertaining, and helpful! Thank you
Thanks for this insight. I like the comment that you said early in the video, that paintings just "happen". I think this is a mistake the beginner makes a lot, I know I just want to jump in really fast to start painting and then get frustrated fast when the composition isn't going well.
