Please don't lament your use of detail! That's the artist you are... and your instruction has taught me to add detail to my oversimplified paintings. I could never find that instruction in college and it's a lost art.
I truly admire your audacity to paint as the masters did. You have a keen knowledge of color, technique and the ability to convey it to others. I have been struggling with my style most of my 52 years and you may have enliven my muse. Now I only have 2-3 years to make my proverbial mark, say the doctors. This gives me even more the desire to create. Now that I don't have to work anymore, I have all that time just to create. Stumbling across your channel has been a true Godsend to me, thank you Andrew. I hope you have a fruitful long life to leave yours. Martin Carlson
Time is everything, and since giving myself time to work a piece(I fired an art coach 9 months in... no pressure now and it's amazing!)....I HAVE NEVER BEEN BETTER, or GROWN better! Thank you for your detail tips, I especially get wonderful feels for the descriptions of the colors used in combination....woot!!!
Andrew.. you make me realize that I am more selfish than I thought I am😫. If I could paint like you I would keep all the secrets to myself and won’t give out anything. I would act like a genius that I am ( emphasize on if I was you). You, on the other hand, is trying help the world to paint better. Thank you.
It was fascinating to watch this - and it was so well edited: normally, when a video is edited for time, the very bits you want to see are skated over or not shown at all: here, we learned about your brushes, your colours, and we could see how you applied both in a way that we could (hope to!) emulate. We learned about the virtues of desaturated colour - and of not going for saturated colour too early: I've read whole books that carried less information than this.
I guess art is subjective and we are our own worst critic, but I thought the details was great, cool, interesting, your eye travels on a journey from one end of the painting to another, which catches little surprises, of cool! Look at this, oh, I see that, how neat, and so on, and taking like a breath, a new new view of a painting, its a treat for the eyes, the senses, and an overall appreciation. I love this painting, and I greatly appreciate the level of detail explanation. Your videos are a wealth of positive information and learning for artists like me. I feel that you explain things where I go, oh, ok, some things I do, not knowing why lol, some I learn from you! So, thank you! I appreciate you sharing your talent! :)
Refreshing and inspiring to see a professional (and my favourite living painter) do similar things to what I used to with adding so many details!! I don't do this anymore, as I enjoy a simpler, more implied texture; so cool, though!
Hi Andrew! Greetings from Athens Greece. I really love your way of painting. I paint too (when I have free time) and your videos helped me a lot. If you ever travel here, I'll be more than glad to meet you. The light in Greece is fantastic. Take care!!!!
much appreciated, so enjoy you process. its almost like a journy. and the best part i took from it "cross that lines". thank you andrew, you are amazing artist.
As always, another super video about painting. Very useful, I find grass so hard to paint. And there are so few instructions out there about painting detalis of the grass. This was very useful.
You do a great job of explaining what you were thinking as you were painting, and so helpful is you explain what colors you are mixing and why! Thank you :)
I think it's really inspiring how even though to most painters you are an absolute master, you seem to have never stopped learning ever since you started painting, you're always pointing out mistakes in your painting and trying to learn from them.
I just found your channel trying to get back into a painting routine after a 4 year lull. I've been very uninspired due to my surroundings but determined to make some changes so I can paint again. I bought a shipping container and will be transforming it into an art studio in the spring.Your channel is the one I chose to inspire me. So happy I found you . Thank you.
Watching people paint in oil is one of my favorite things! It's so relaxing and satisfying. When it comes to details it all depends on what you're going for and how you do it and that's going to be different for everyone. Like you said, unless you push the boundaries of looseness and detailedness (totally a word) you're not going to find out what you want. There's a lot of pressure out there to either make your paints really loose (or super detailed though I haven't heard that so much) but you shouldn't let that direct where you go unless that's actually what you want to do. Detailed or loose, I think this painting looks amazing.
That last landscape of the barn and horse and fence! I could look at that all day, way to go with the colors, i love the dioxazine and thalo green addition, just beautiful! Hope we will see some thalo blue in that shadow on the top of your barns one day 😊
You are a gifted person. Your work is amazing and I admire your skill. Thank you for sharing and thank you for adding beauty to the world for the rest of us to enjoy!
Thanks for sharing your work. It allows me to see parts of a country I will never be able to visit. I hope to take your instructions and apply them to my paintings. Thanks again and have a blessed year.
Hi Andrew. You can never have to much detail......LOL. When that said, you are an amazing teacher. I learn so much about the color scale from your videos. I do paint in oils, because the paintings live more that way, when they are finished. But you really have some fantastic skills. Best regards, Tore.
You are a SURGEON with those brushes! Thank you for these videos. I adopted, “Working back to front” in my studies (amongst other techniques you’ve shared - I want to grab a hold of some oleogel next). This works best for me. I’m enjoying the learning process and have become less fearful/anxious of “putting myself out there.” Your methods and teachings make the most sense to me. And for that, I’m grateful.
Andrew, I too struggle with what I consider too much tightness in my work and I am trying to loosen things up a bit. Then I look at Ivan Shishkin's work and think, "Man I paint like Jackson Pollock". Thank you my friend for all you do for us.
Very interesting and helpful. I have also found recently that the basic layer needs to be dark so that the highlights stand out better and create a stronger contrast which creates a more lifelike visual effect. I look forward to your next video.
Andrew, another awesome lesson. I could never understand why my highlights didn't "pop" the way they should until you explained about desaturating the layers underneath. Watching this video was the best 20 minutes I've spent all week.
@@connieh.4689 right like any learning experience, repetition is key to absorption! I have several painting DVD's that are almost worn out from "over-use".
Hi Andrew. So glad you’re back. Your comment about “crossing the line” just validated what I experienced with my painting the other day. It just wasn’t pleasing me after working on it (too long). So I backed off, took a good look, and realized it had too many details covering the whole scene. So I scraped off most of it and “generalized” the supporting areas, leaving details mainly for the center of interest. Voila! It is so much better, and your validating my decisions was very important to me. Crossing the line is a good lesson to absorb. Thanks!
Wow, Andrew! I don't know about anyone else, but as for me, I love the meticulous details. Although they can be exhausting, it makes a painting more interesting IMHO. When I visit art museums, I'm always most in awe of the brush strokes of the the detailed paintings. I find it inspirational. Yet, I understand the desire to loosen up after years of painting a certain way. Still, I very much appreciate and enjoy your methodical process AND how you show the gradual progression from the beginning to finish near the end of the video. That's so helpful to see. I think I'm going to start doing that so I can track my progress. It might even be helpful to have as a reference, if I get stuck at some point. Thanks for sharing another great video with such great content. You've given me lots to think about. As always, looking forward to the next one! Take care of yourself and family. Enjoy the snow!
Thank you for sharing all your techniques and thoughts as you paint. I really like all the detail. I really enjoy all your videos, I am learning so much from you!
I am having a bad day but I watched this on my lunch break and now I feel better. I love the subjects of your paintings. I didn't know New Zealand looked like that. I'm from a river valley in the Midwest US and it looks very similar. I always feel comforted by scenes of hills and old barns. Also glad you changed position of horse head. It looks much better.
Hi Andrew- I learn a lot from your demonstrations and the comments you make as the video plays.I think your methodical process makes a lot of sense: a number of thumbnails to explore the composition possibilities and select one to develop the painting; then a colour study; then a grid-based scale-up to the final painting. Many thanks! Best Wishes Kevin Barry
You are such a talented artist. I'm so glad I found your videos. You explain so much! You are one of the best artists I've found, thank you for sharing.
Thanks for another great video. You are one of my main sources for learning more about painting. I watched the parts where you painted the extension from the roof on the right to see how you got that wonderful shadow/bright effect. So, it looked to me like you painted the shadow part using desaturated transparent color (Ultramarine blue and the violet), then went back and repainted the bright part with higher saturation of color plus Titanium white for highlights. Painting shadows is something I have great trouble with. Thanks for explaining and showing so well.
Absolutely, you must cross the line it’s the only way to learn where the line is! Without crossing it you risk playing it too safe, equally you may find that you like what you have produced beyond the line. Does that make sense?? Great to hear that you are getting more commissions. What you do is quality and that takes time. If it means that there is a wait to see your next video, then so be it. The commissions must come first. Thanks Andrew!
I liked it more as a rough painting without all those details, was simplified and more powerful to me. But awesome job as always, love your explaining .
As always, LOVE you painting videos, so very helpful. It was particularly fascinating to see how just laying the graduation of colors, the details pop, and make a difference. I typically use acrylics, but most of the principles carry though. Watching the details take shape with each brushstroke is like watching magic. I will never tire of this! Thank you!
Mil gracias por este nuevo video. Estaba esperando con ansias poder seguir de nuevo tus instrucciones y continuar aprendiendo. Un saludo desde Colombia.
Tisch with hair ..... I like it :) . Thanks Andrew I love the old barn, I commented on your sketches of it or similar in a previous video. Good to see it come to light (so to speak).. I don't think you went overboard corrogated tin has lines, channels, gullies call them what you will.. undulations maybe and the holes just make it. What's an old barn unless its falling apart??? Good stuff!!
Great video! I've learned that watching more than once helps catch key points. As a recent refugee from the world of acrylics, I appreciate your comments about drying times. Currently I'm tangling with the concept of making sure I'm always doing fat over lean, when I have to do several layers. Your thoughts on that in a video would be appreciated.
Andrew Tischler, I love your paintings and I'm always impressed after the first step, I want to yell "Don't touch it anymore!". But your detailing is so awesome,,, that was my passion but I'm older now and life is short and spontaneous, friends do not let friends over-detail, lol,,, or cut their hair but you pull that off well, still a badass!
I like this video especially because you commentate an inner conflict while painting; a lot of painting videos and tutorials kind of state that their method and way of doing things is correct verbatim. It's reassuring that you're not overly confident with yourself, yet your finished painting looks like an absolute masterpiece. Biggups Andrewwww

Thank you Andrew Tischler for your fine demonstration of how to paint an object. You show how easy it can be done.
I love using the dagger for distant trees on hills.
I am so very grateful for your instruction- thank you.😊

You are an inspiration. I will be looking closer at shadows thanks to your work. Thanks
