Roman Catholic here. I appreciated the video. The only thing I would say is the Catholic Church actually teaches that works don't necessarily save you in the sense that you are "working" your way to Heaven. We would say that God's grace alone saves you, but it is up to you to cooperate with that grace. This is why in James 2:24 we see that we are not saved by faith alone. The works don't save you in a way that you earn it, but they are your act of cooperation with God.
To put it another way, if you read the entire chapter of James 2, we see that a mere intellectual acknowledgment of God's existence isn't enough. Instead, it is a love for Jesus Christ that can be defined as a saving faith. But as our Lord says in the gospels, "if you love me obey my commands "(John 14:15-17). It is in this sense we say that works play a role. Also, I believe it was Pope Benedict XVI who gave a sermon saying that if you define "faith" in this way, then Luther's formula of faith alone works.
Anyway, nothing but respect for my Protestant brothers and sisters. I love you guys and will keep you in my prayers.

@@frogmanvc The thought that, according to Catholic teaching, one is not saved by faith alone, nor works alone. For example, Christ said that 'when he was hungry, you fed Him, when He was naked you clothed Him.....' and by that, whenever you did that to the least of His people, you did it to Him. Or when Paul writes that if you have faith enough to move mountains but have not love, you are nothing. So, according to the Catholic perspective, faith and works go hand in hand.

This was a surprisingly charitable analysis, thank you for that. However it was still a bit in error about what the Catholic understanding of faith and works is and how they relate to salvation.
As a person who was raised Baptist and entered into full communion with the Catholic Church (swam the Tiber as they say!) as an adult based on intellectual and faith convictions, I think it’s most simple to view faith and works as two sides of one coin. They are inseparable from one another, and it was sadly Luther’s misunderstanding stemming from his deep-seated insecurities and likely psychological maladies that led to the disfigurement of the term “faith” by redefining it to mean essentially “intellectual assent” which it never was understood to be before, and subsequent ripping apart of this new understanding of “faith” from works. They are ONE coin, in two sides, and CANNOT EXIST one without the other.
Saving faith is “faith expressing itself in love”. That’s the best definition I think one can give. Pax Christi.

However, when I hear Protestants say, “we don’t believe that works are needed in order to be saved or to make it to heaven”, I get astonished.
When you read Jesus saying, “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire” (Matthew 7:19) or Paul saying, “do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10), how can you possibly assert that what we do is irrelevant for our final destination?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It's not that good works are not important, they most definitely are. Hi, Eastern Catholic here.
0:50 Catholics don't believe in "works". However we Catholics end up defending the notion of works due to constant crap thrown to us by protestants who never understand what the Catholics are actually supposed to believe.
Catholics are supposed to believe all is grace, works included. That's what Augustine said too.
But why do works matter? Because works, more like "deeds", are the expression of our love of God and of our neighbour.
It is by our deeds that we bear our own cross as Jesus, it is by our deeds that we trust God, it is by our deeds that we honor God the most.
I say deeds and not just works because in all other languages apart English "works" has the broader meaning that "deeds" has.

One of the problems with differentiating Catholics and Protestants is "Faith" and "Works" are not mutually exclusive. We are saved by the grace of the father, son and holy spirit alone. Nothing we "do" gives us more grace. However, we have to cooperate with God's will for us and participate in this grace by "picking up our cross and following him". That means we have to "act" like Christians for the right reasons, not to just appear like we are pious.
I've spent a few years reading early church fathers and reformation "protests" So many protestant denominations are so far from the reformation "issues" by saying "scripture alone"
I've read to protestants the exact Catholic dogma directly from the catechism and they say "Yes, that's what we believe". But, when I tell them "That's what Catholics believe they say "No, that is not Catholic belief, they are "works based". Ugh.
Look, you can believe whatever you want. But, it's intellectually dishonest to deny that Catholic teaching is based on the bible and the beliefs of the Apostles. It's directly related to the teachings of Jesus and the understanding of the Apostles and their immediate followers. All.Of.It.

Explain to us why if an exorcism is needed no one calls for a pastor, they call for a Catholic Priest. Why do satanists perform black Masses instead of revivals and try to steal consecrated hosts to defile. Why did the Protestant church feel the need to remove seven books out of the Bible? The main difference is that Jesus Christ established the Catholic Church in 33AD, over 1,500 years before Martin Luther, Joseph Smith or Ellen G. White came along. Only it has the fullness of truth of true Christianity.
As for the faith question, Catholics absolutely believe faith alone saves us but also believe our interpretation is more biblical. Protestants exclude many passages alluding to co-operating with that faith.
And no Catholic doctrine does not contradict the Bible. We do not rely on tradition alone. By sacred tradition we refer to the oral traditions passed down from the apostles and their successors in the 400 years before the Bible was created by the Catholic Church.
The Catholic Church canonised the Bible over 1,100 years before Protestantism was even a man made idea. It did that with the authority given to it by Jesus Christ. The Catholic Church has the sole divine authority to interpret it for Christian doctrine. You are welcome to read it but you do not have the authority to create your own Christian doctrine. This is precisely what has caused so much disunity in 500 years and a sea of errors and heresy.
Your doctrine of faith alone was never believed by any Christian for over 1,500 years before Martin Luther. He said killing 1,000 people a day would not prevent you from going to heaven. Even if you are right (you aren’t), Protestants and Catholics go to heaven. If Catholics are right, we go to heaven and Protestants could go to hell.
Catholics believe in faith with love - what Jesus and the Bible teaches, not what Martin Luther taught.

I appreciate that this gentleman made a point to reframe the conversation to Catholics vs Protestants as opposed to Catholics vs Christians. I have noticed that American Evangelicals tend to use these terms often to the exclusion of not just Catholics, but Orthodox and even more traditional/historical forms of Protestantism like Lutherans or High Church Anglicans. Good on you sir for looking at the bigger historical picture.

Tradition over the bible? You choose the bible which Catholics compiled it and called it the bible today. Without Catholics the old and new testament books would still be separated until today. There wouldn't be protestant group to begin with. To be honest protestant Jesus and Catholic Jesus are very different. You see, when protestant understand the last supper and Jesus said the words, protestant understood it as symbolic and not the Eucharistic. In Catholic, the last supper is the Eucharist. Thus, the interpretation is so different so the Jesus in both group are not the same. It is like Islam, they have their own Jesus. A very different kind of Jesus in Christian. If you dig deep and look for ancient christians they have tradition and broke bread when they had religious gatherings. If you have guts to dig deep go ahead if you really want to know the one true church. Do you own research.

If Catholicism is not Christian then please explain why ALL Bible believing people receive their rule of faith, the Bible, from her, the Bride of Christ…
History shows us that Jesus didn't leave us a bible, - the apostles didn't tell us which books belong in the bible, - the church fathers never agreed on the 27 books of the NT through the 4th century, - not only did they not agree but their individual lists of would-be NT canons were GROWING during this time, growing in numbers of hundreds of “inspired” NT writings.
Therefore, if it wasn't the Catholic/Orthodox church that compiled the 27 books of the NT in the 5th century with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and preserved it by laboriously hand copying them over and over throughout the centuries before the invention of the printing press, the “rule of faith” for many, please tell us who did? And if this church no longer exists today, what good is the text which came forth from her if she couldn't sustain herself?

      -
-----I will ask you, which NO ONE has replied to: Who's other writings does GOD tell us to accept as the truth??? QUOTE FROM the BIBLE!!!!)
Remember these words from Jesus: John 14:6 NIV -
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Since HE IS THE TRUTH, then when a church preaches their version of the truth, who is the truth??? Jesus or the "Church"???
      >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Sola scriptura, like the Trinity and the sovereignty of God is found by definition not title.
      Shall we do this again?
Here we go preaching to the blind.
First, the Bible teaches not to add or take away from Scripture. Paul writes that we should not “exceed what is written” (1 Cor. 4:6) Likewise, Moses writes, “You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it” (Deut. 4:2; cf. 12:32). If another authority could either add or take away from Scripture, then this would invalidate these passages of Scripture.
Second, Scripture is the litmus test for discerning truth. Every time Jesus needs to answer a doctrinal question, he cites Scripture-not tradition. The phrase “It is written…” occurs some 90 times in the NT. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees saying, “You are mistaken, not understanding the Scriptures” (Mt. 22:29).
Third, the Bible does not allow for tradition to be equal or superior to Scripture. Jesus said, “Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? … by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition” (Mt. 15:3, 6).
Fourth, Luke calls the Bereans “noble-minded” for “examining the Scriptures daily” to see if the gospel was true (Acts 17:11).
Fifth, Timothy was able to come to faith through the OT Scriptures as a child (2 Tim. 3:14-15). If a little child could come to faith through the OT Scriptures, how much more could a fully grown adult come to faith with the completed canon?
Sixth, Paul tells Timothy that Scripture is sufficient for faith and morals (2 Tim. 3:16-17). Paul writes: “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16-17).
Seventh, tradition is not a reliable way to transmit truth. Catholic apologists often appeal to the Church Fathers to defend doctrines, but we see no reason to believe in the early Church Fathers. In fact, false traditions were even appearing in the first century. Paul writes, “You are aware of the fact that all who are in Asia turned away from me” (2 Tim. 1:15).
Eighth, Sola Scriptura is not an invention of the Reformation. While we do not ultimately hang our argument on history, it is verifiable that this view has been present throughout the history of the Christian Church.
      (1) Scripture is the sole, infallible rule of faith.
      (2) No other revelation is needed for the Church.
      (3) There is no other infallible rule of faith outside of Scripture.
      (4) Scripture reveals those things necessary for salvation.
      (5) All traditions are subject to the higher authority of Scripture.
But I think it’s extremely important you understand what it is not…
      (1) We do NOT mean that we start from scratch every time we read the Bible. Of course, we should also read commentaries, quote scholars, etc.
      (2) We do NOT mean Scripture is an exhaustive account of spiritual or other knowledge (Jn. 20:30; 21:25).
      (3) We do NOT mean the Church has no role in interpreting the Bible. 1 Timothy 3:15 states that the church is “the pillar and support of the truth.”
      (4) We do NOT mean that we should reject all traditions. Some traditions are helpful to us as believers, and we see no reason to abandon these simply because they are extra-biblical. However, we contend that all human tradition should be subservient to Scripture-not equal to or above it.
      (5) We do NOT mean that the apostles never spoke the word of God to people (Acts 2:42; 1 Thess. 2:13; 2 Thess. 2:15; 3:6). When the apostles were alive, they could speak on faith and morals in person. However, since we do not have this luxury today, we must rely on their writings. Jude writes of “the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints” (Jude 3).
      >>>
Sola Scriptura, or “God’s Word alone,” maintains that the Bible is the highest source of authority in a Christian’s life, the final court of appeal (though not the only authority: the Bible itself mentions governmental and other authorities).
Sola gratia, or “grace alone,” says sinners are saved as an unearned gift of God’s grace, “not as a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Eph 2:8-9).
Sola Christo (“solus Christus”), or “Christ alone,” emphasizes the exclusivity of Jesus’ role in salvation: “No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).
And soli Deo gloria, or “to the glory of God alone,” says that the purpose of creation, salvation, and everything-including our goal as Christians-is the glory of God, “that God may be all in all” (1 Cor 15:28).

Thank you Rod - you’re very kind.
It seems to me that Protestantism is a plain reading of Luther’s shortened Bible, attempting to simplify an infinite God. The thinking often skip or brush over difficult questions, leading to the creation of new Protestant denominations. One clear example of this is the debate on faith versus works. The answer is simple and true, but not complete, and the theology/philosophy is very poorly developed. I love Protestant people; many of them have 100 times the faith of many Catholics. It’s their church’s underdeveloped and simplistic theology that leads people away from the Church. And whenever they disagree, their solution is simply to create a new Protestant church.

2 Thessalonians 2:15 “ So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter”
This is an example of the two sources of the word of God. word of mouth is saying the oral traditions passed on to us by the apostles. Letter is talking about the epistle that the apostles sent out that the early church put together and formed the scriptures. To some up holding fast traditions by mouth or letter are the two ways sacred tradition, which is the word of God coming from Jesus himself is passed on to us. Either by tradition from apostles or scripture. A lot of protestant bibles will use the word teaching. But in the original Greek bible they use the word paradosis and that is the Greek word for tradition.

You can't draw a distinction between faith and tradition. Sacred Tradition says the Bible is Word of God, and the Magisterium of the Church gives the Church the authority to say that. The Church precedes the Bible, and the Church decides what texts are in the Bible. Since no person has the authority to add or detract from the Bible, what Luther did by subtracting certain texts was an act of heresy, and to this day the thousands of ecclesiastical communions that comprise Protestantism believe different things, based on their idiosyncratic interpretation of the text.

What makes a church a true church?
What are the essential ingredients of a true church?
The essential ingredients were a place where the gospel is truly preached, the sacraments are rightly administered, and where there is true discipline and government within the church. That's where you begin. You want to make sure that the gospel is truly being preached.

As a Catholic, deep in history and devoted reader of scripture, thank you for very charitable discussion. That said, you still strawman the catholic faith by acting like we care a list of works around. Read what Jesus Christ said. Please don't pick a few lines from Paul's letters and generate an entire theological framework from that. That's not historic Christianity. So, I believe your title word choice is misleading: instead of "Christians and Catholics" is correctly should be said "Christian = Catholic". Please don't manufacture a false history. Protestantism is an invention of the 16th Century. It is not a restoration of authentic Christianity. Read the Church fathers. I keep praying for unity. God bless.

Many of the points you stress as points of departure between Catholic and Protestant are actually things Catholics believe too. We believe that grace through faith leads to salvation, but for that to be sincere, it must be expressed in works. Catholics consider the bible as the umpire of tradition, so that Catholic Tradition can never be in contradiction of the bible.

What makes a church a true church?
What are the essential ingredients of a true church?
The essential ingredients were a place where the gospel is truly preached, the sacraments are rightly administered, and where there is true discipline and government within the church. That's where you begin. You want to make sure that the gospel is truly being preached.
      Does the Catholic Church qualify?

      RESEARCH:
The writings of the NT were written, considered Scripture, and being circulated among the churches while the Authors were still alive and well -- see 2Peter 3:15-16, Colossians 4:16, 1Peter 1:1, John 20:30-31, Galatians 1:4, etc. -- these Authors were NOT part of the Roman Church.
      >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
What did Jesus mean when he said "call no man father"? Jesus does not mean no one may refer to a parent as "father." He is specifically addressing the practice of referring to religious leaders and mentors as "father" in any formal or official sense. What's forbidden is an attempt to give one of Jesus' followers a spiritual status above that of others.

No Protestants and Catholics are different but both groups claim Christianity. Each person determines which denomination of Christianity is the one they follow. Personally I’m convinced that Catholic is NOT correct, BUT that is a personal belief you have yours I have mine. I’m married to the daughter of a Freewill Baptist minister so guess which church we attend. Personally I think SDA is the most correct denomination that I am aware of. I think Catholic puts too much emphasis upon the Pope. Papal decrees, in my opinion, have distorted Catholic teachings a LOT! I know one thing for sure. Saturday is the Sabbath in scripture, and SUNDAY is a false sabbath of the Catholic tradition.
