    Man Lobster, I can't thank you enough for this opportunity. This bass is absolutely awesome, and you make it sound killer haha! I'm gonna have many years of fun with this thing. A bass that's kind o Dingwall-ish, kind of Stingray-ish, with a Jazz bass-ish type of neck built by a being who is part man, and part crustacean with a claw that both pinches and slaps. Mind blown! Sounds pretty damn good too. I dig that Aguilar pickup a lot. Congrats to Trevor, that's a pretty sweet bass.

    I added a violin bass neck pup to a cheap p bass knockoff. It was my first time ever trying something like that. The pickup mounting screws were the wrong size, so I can't lower the pickups as much as I would like. Also, hollowing everything out with a dremmel and file led to some sloppy appearance, but it sounds like no other bass I know of. I tried some fretwork, and although it plays better it looks like crap.
    I now have so much more awe for people that do this for a living.

    The Tone Control presents a high impedance load to the pickup, so instead of using a high value pot, which will absolutely adversely affect the tone, you might get better results by using a 25K low value (low impedance) volume control AFTER the TC and (of course) before the output jack. I think if you do an A/B comparison with the volume control value and placement, the difference will be audible. (Retired electronics tech with 2 degrees and over 50 years bench experience modding amps and bass guitars, etc.)

    Hey Lobster!! Great video. Is there a diagram on how you altered the tone capsule, and combined it with the stacked pot? Also, is that the original volume pot you’re using or a new one? That’s my only concern doing this mod. This made me want to pull the trigger on this combo

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  2 года назад +1

      Heyo! The volume pot is just a 250k pot I had laying around, not the original from the stock setup. For the stacked pot on the darkglass, no diagram is needed. If you look at the plug connector that goes into the darkglass single pot, you see three wires that connect to the pot via the connector. You just snip the connector and solder those three wires in order to the new stacked pot. There's two sets of three lugs, just 1-2-3 1-2-3 for both wires. You maintain the connector bit that goes onto the PCB of the preamp, so you can always flip or swap the connections on the PCB without soldering to change which part of the stack controls which freq range. • @LowEndLobster

Still doable whilst retaining full functionality?? TIA.

      @@adamcarra3161 Excellent question! Upon looking at the preamp- yes it's possible but you'll need to rewire the switch. So I finished modding my 34, there were a lot of issues with the tone capsule pots fitting, I got a A500k pot for volume, but the thing is HOT!! It’s distorting when I just play, flat eq, and I changed the battery and all my solders are good. Any thoughts? It was doing this with my stock Preamp which is why I changed it. The only common ground is the pickup, but I lowered that as well, could just be a faulty pickup?

      I believed I used a new 250k volume pot and ditched two of the B50k pots for the darkglass for a stacked B50k. In regards to which controls are on the stack, you can choose because the controls still attach to the preamp via the little plugs. You can just swap the plugs around to pick which controls you want (and flip the plug over if it's going in the wrong direction)

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  2 года назад +1

      I personally HATE the stock pickup. The stock preamp is serviceable with an aftermarket pickup, but the stock pickup is a bit 'much' and has IMO too much output. The biggest tonal difference would be how the pickups are wired. I believe the Aguilars are wired in parallel, where the stock SUB pickup is in series.
