    its kind of amazing what a 3rd party pre-amp can do for a bass that sounded just "good". Now that thing sounds fantastic, its' too bad they don't offer it with battery route.. since most people won't have the the tools to do all of that... and sometimes its hard to find a tech you trust...

    Or... what I would probably do is keep it passive and wire it Volume/Tone with a series/parallel switch. But it does sound really nice with that Tone Monster preamp. I've always said that at least 80% of tone is a combination of just the strings and electronics. The hardware, construction and wood making up the rest. I think these budget bass electronics upgrades you are doing is proof.

    $117 on the Thomann website 9/31/21. Shipping to the Midwest is $78 or $195 total - that sucks! Price is for shipping is exactly 2/3 the price of the instrument! Wish Thomann had a US dealer

    Hello Lobster. Is is possible that this is a "boost only" preamp? If I understood you right, it doesn't have center points on the knobs and turned counter clockwise it doesn't really sound cut at all 🤔
    However... in my opinion this preamp sounds much better than the other one that you used in the ToneMonster SUB. Considering the price point it's quite nice.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  3 года назад +1

      Hi Christoph! I'm pretty sure it's boost and cut, I did have to replace the bass pot due to an unrelated incident and totally forgot about that haha. I could have probably turned the gain down a bit more as it was still spicy. There's a trim pot on the preamp module. Thanks and great comment! :)

    Harley Benton is not only CRUSHING "Big Brand Guitar" manufacturers but they are going to overtake the Chinese replica/counterfeit market for damn sure. I have a replica Music Man from China (with similar upgrades) but this is actually CHEAPER!!!! I added a Seymour Duncan STC-3M4 Preamp Music Man Tone Circuit ($150) and a Seymour Duncan SMB-4A Alnico ($99) and the bass itself was around $350 from AliExpress, complete with the brand logo and serial number on the headstock. I think that your post-mod HB sounds slightly better than my upgraded Music Man (but I could be suffering from G.A.S and your playing is definitely better).
    Why the hell would a "non-gigging" bassist or guitar player pay $3,000 for an Ernie Ball/Fender/Gibson/PRS when you can get one of these for under $200 (and immediately upgrade the pickups, which, anyone would say, is "90%" of the difference between Big Brand and budget guitars)? As the hardware on these are great for the money so you don't necessarily have to immediately upgrade these items. Also with Chinese fakes you never know what you're getting until it arrives (although the quality has improved tremendously) and good luck returning it, if you're unhappy, as these DHgate/AliExpress stores simply disappear every few months and re-emerge under a different name.
    Also with Harley Benton, you don't have to wait for 3-months for delivery. NOTE: My HB order arrived within 3-days or the online order, whereas my replica Music Man took 45 to 60-days for arrival! My fake Music Man arrived with a defective truss rod (won't move) so I cannot change the action to my preference (I like extremely low-action for slap). However, for an extra $$$ (say another $150) it can be fixed but I cannot easily find an after-market replacement neck. I could have exchanged it but if it took 45-days to arrive, imagine how long the exchange process would've taken? However, the guitar is fantastic and sounds just as good, based on my comparison against a real Stingray at a guitar store (using the same amp).
    With the Chinese fakes there is NO manufacturer warranty either which is a huge risk! Truth be told, only an expert could "potentially" tell the difference from a sound perspective and the quality is JUST AS GOOD as the Big Guitar products (don't get it twisted). FYI - If you really want to fake it, you can buy the "Big Brand Guitar" logos for under $20.

      Agreed! Now if they can only keep up with the demand for these bad larrys!

    to my taste theres too much treble and zing. theres a lot of noise from strings and fingers. its like you play through guitar amp. maybe flatwound strings will solve the problem. i think that the original version is better, because anyway everybody use eq on the amp, or preamp pedal or in the DAW after recording. at least thats how i hear it. great experiment!

    great vid as always, very intresting mod, can you compare it with a sterling ray 34...would you suggest doing this mod to a cheap HB bass (or any other mod maybe) instead of buying a sterling ray 34 due to the huge price differense.Will a moded HB sound eventually as good as ray 34 ???In EU where i leave a new sterling ray 34 is about 1100 euro , about 1300 usd

    Could it be wired to have a push-pull volume for the preamp and the other two knobs for the tones?

  • @presentrlb

    A little noisy for me, I don't want to hear such articulate string sliding sounds, etc. Some of that is inevitable with active setups, I've played Stingrays for 20 years, so I know. But this preamp is a little too hot, IMO. I have one of these HB MB-4's, and the only thing I felt inclined to mod was the tuners. Otherwise, great as-is.

      They don't have these on Amazon, but I bought this with two other basses (the Ibanez RGB300 and the HB MP-5 Enhanced) and shipping at the time was like 70 or 80 bucks total.

    Hey Lobster, was the Humbucker more or less a drop in replacement for the original pickup in the MB-4? Would you say most 'music man style' pickups would be drop ins? Considering modding one if I end up getting it. Thanks!

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  3 года назад +1

      Hey Wollace! Yes, the pickup used here and other MM style humbuckers will fit no problem. Worst you'll have to do is maybe remove the pickguard (some pickups don't like to go in with the pickguard on).

  • @russellzauner

    That's not a Matador. It sounds nice. Has some clicky and percolation but doesn't get stabby although it is a bit sharp around the edges, tonewise, but that tone is good for stuff too.

    • @russellzauner
      @russellzauner 3 года назад +1

      5:30 Tone gets thicker and rounder, losing the percolative pop a bit but it's still sizzling and clicking on top of the thicker bottom. Maybe there's just a lack of mids...but you can't seem to dial out that click action so you better love it if you're doing this mod.

    • @russellzauner
      @russellzauner 3 года назад +1

      6:12 if you started slapping here I think you might crack a couple windows and wineglasses from the over the top penetration you're getting with just that setting. Someone might but I don't like it at all. Harsh and grating are the words that come to mind.
