They don't control the entire world but is chosen by many companies that rely on security to help their data be protected.. This is caused by a faulty code and the update was pushed and caused those computers in the world with crowdstrike protection to crash and have a BSOD.

We've become _too_ dependent on interconnected systems using the same software. If a mistake can cause this -- imagine what something intentionally nefarious could do?

It's not always practical. Most companies serialize everything. Take an airport for instance, imagine having to write down a 15 digit number by hand for every passenger. Could you do it? Sure, but it will never be as fast as scanning a barcode. The time to complete any transaction across most types of businesses would increase 10X.

I didn't noticed until now about microsoft crashing worldwide. I wasn't really on my computer at all earlier today because I was busy taking care of things like going to work and do chores xD.
this whole thing caused my company's debit and credit systems to go out too and so many customers kept getting mad at me because they couldn't use their cards
I work IT for a large software dev operation in Australia... PCs started to blue screen at around 3pm... by 4pm every single PC was down in every office in Australia... within 1 hour our team determined it was crowdstrike. Although still silence from Crowdstrike... our 5 man team war roomed and found and tested the fix... rolled out the fix to every 500+ Windows PC, window servers and virtual windows machine... the worst part was fix could not be applied remotely as all workstations was bricked... we had to 1 PC at a time physically in person to apply the our fix... while ours phones was going nuts with people going nuts cuz they can't work... i walked out of office at 12am... no food no breaks as a broken IT Support.... thanks to crowdstrike...
Im not gonna be suprised if crowd strike ends up getting a law suit for this, unless there is like a very tiny part where crowd strike can’t be legally liable
I work at Starbucks so yeah we had to write all our orders down on pen and paper we had no choice. I relieved my 90s days when the world of computers didn’t exist at least at our house. I didn’t even get my first laptop after I graduated from high school and that was 2010 so it was odd going back in time I actually didn’t mind it but the customers did. You would think at moments like these people would be more understanding and patient but no were more rude and disrespectful than ever. Not exactly a fun day at work especially with this heat

Looking at numbers of delayed/cancelled flights today, Minneapolis, Laguardia, and Atlanta (read: delta hubs) were statistically performing pretty horribly, along with Houston, Newark, and Amsterdam Schipol. LAX and JFK were doing pretty well. ORD, Boston Logan, and Dulles were about average in terms of delays and cancellations. Travel this weekend is not going to be fun, with over 60k delays and 5k cancellations worldwide today. Stay safe!
Of course this will happen again (either by accident again or a hack) because we say we learn our lesson, but in truth we never do. We rely too much on computers and never have multiple backup plans for situations like this.

I read this comment on a New York Times article about the whole Crowdstrike/Microsoft outage that perfectly encapsulates the absurdity of this whole thing, and it was one of the highest rated comments too: "Gee whiz maybe every company on Earth shouldn't outsource their entire IT cloud security infrastructure to a single point of failure? Maybe it's also bad to have have that single point of failure be a tech company that outsources their workforce to developing countries and puts more effort into optimizing their stock price instead of optimizing their testing procedure before pushing updates. Maybe I'm just a boomer, but perhaps all these companies who downsized and outsourced their own IT departments to death over the past decade had it coming?" Bingo. Exactly damn right.

I remember this happened to me last Friday. My bus came early and told me about it. She wasn't sure about me going into work that day. Gratefully, i work at the library, and we weren't hit that bad, but boy did it cause some inconvenience to others.
This is what I was afraid of when we became too dependent on technology. When something goes wrong like this, it becomes chaotic. All the records you have digitally become inaccessible. This is why I keep important stuff in physical form.
This must be so extremely miserable being stuck at the airport when a glitch happens. Fortunately, I’m not traveling right now. I hope this unexpected glitch get fixed for the USA airports across the country.

The main cause was that CrowdStrike likely contained an error in its programming or configuration. The error could have been a bug, a compatibility issue, or even a mistake introduced during development. When the update ran on Windows systems, the bad code interacted with the operating system in an unexpected way. This could have caused system resources to be overloaded, corrupted memory, or triggered security measures that resulted in a crash. So, they will need an IT to remove the driver manually, or just resetting the PC again
Just goes to show that if a massive power outage or software company’s going down even worse then this happens then the world is gonna go into complete mayhem. Forever grateful I’m not in a city.

Difficult to fix because it bricks the computers. Can't be automatically patched because the computers fail to boot so they never make it online. IT needs to access the computer in person to repair it, and most IT work uses remote access now.
How we fixed was boot into safe mode after putting the bit locker key and go to windows>system32>drivers>crowdstrike and deleting c-00000291 and then reboot. Took me roughly 6 minutes per workstation to get it up and running.
@kattmilk VPN connection will mean nothing if your computer cannot boot into the OS. First off, if your organization has bitlocker enabled - you will need to have the key to proceed into safe mode.
if it was an attack do you really think they would admit it? Nope, but keep paper and pencil handy, and keep some cash on you for when your atm won't give you money.
