  • I've always liked the old bumpside Fords. (Check out my other 1971 F100 that I converted to 4x4) And Jimmy Spenders who hooked us up with the dud of a locked up 1954 International put us on this 1971 Ford F100 that is a factory 4x4 with a 360 and 4 speed manual transmission. And add on air pump!! Let's see if we can get it to run! This pickup has been sold and has a new home in Oklahoma! As always, thanks much for watching!

    I'm sure if I scroll through enough comments, someone already said this, but "FE" stands for Ford Edsel. That block was originally developed for the Edsel. Every time you smoke tires with a 390, thank Edsel for existing.

    • @thecollectoronthecorner7061
      @thecollectoronthecorner7061 2 года назад +3

      No the Edsel typically had Different engines than the ford. The FE came in fords in 58 as a 332 and 352 and was a 390 in 62. Edsels typically had 361 and it was a MEL. That MEL stands for Lincoln Edsel & Mercuryl.

      Problem is on a V8 filling thru the spark plug holes you only get a partial soak. because of the angle on the block the top portion of the pistons will be above whatever your putting in the cyl. On a V8 I remove the carb and rocker arms. tap on the valves to be certain they are all closed. then fill the intake manifold full of diesel and atf mix. then open the intake valves and that will allow every cyl to get 100% full. Then I wait a month or two before trying to break it free.

    "FE" derives from 'Ford-Edsel. Versions of the FE line designed for use in medium and heavy trucks and school buses from 1964 through 1978 were known as "FT," for 'Ford-Truck, and differed primarily by having steel (instead of nodular iron) crankshafts, larger crank snouts, smaller ports and valves, different distributor shafts, different water pumps and a greater use of iron for its parts.

    The vinegar is a mild acid, works like Muriatic Acid when de-rusting a gas tank. But not good overall for metal; Kroil is a better bet because it lubricates too. Your idea of pushing the piston down wasn't a bad one, but concentrated too much force in the weakest part of the piston -- aluminum is a lot more brittle than iron. It might have worked to put 3-4 of your nuts around the perimeter where the piston is stronger and tighten them in sequence -- that's 3-4 times the total force with less stress on the aluminum piston, and closer to the stuck ring. There the failure would be to blow out the land, which would still free the piston from the block. I'm assuming FE pistons aren't hard to come by.
    When dealing with rust, there's no substitute for soaking.

    • @todddenio3200
      @todddenio3200 2 года назад +4

      I have used vinegar many times and it hasn’t given any indication of affecting the good metal but did take care of the rust usually within 24 hours and while I have also used kroil and love it, I have had things it just would not free up and I followed it up with a vinegar soaking which worked every time. Am I saying that Kroil is not a great product? Absolutely not because it is great but even it has limitations in which case something a bit more aggressive on rust is called for and so far all engines I have used it in freed up and as soon as they were free I oiled the cylinders to prevent flash rusting the cylinders and as long as the engine didn’t have other issues such as bad bearings, bad timing chains, etc and the engine was able to run it held up fine and nearly all of them are still running today although about half were eventually given a re-ring and new bearings after it was found they were parked because they were getting worn out and the other half still run untouched after several years. Of the nearly 20 engines I have used vinegar to free up only 3 failed to last and one of those was due to a cracked crankshaft, another dropped a valve taking out a piston and cylinder wall and the 3rd blew when a friend’s 16 yr old daughter decided that while her parents were at work she should do massive burnouts with that big 71 Buick Electra on the highway a little ways from home so she wouldn’t get caught and it tossed a rod. Her dad was so impressed with the burnouts she did that he couldn’t bring himself to punish her beyond telling her that she broke it, so she had to get her hands dirty and help do the work to fix it when he would get a replacement engine for it since the rest of the car was nearly immaculate.

  • @SeanPwnery
    @SeanPwnery 2 года назад +4

    This may come off as a dumb question but, when I used to do this, I'd drop a quart or two of marvel mystery oil or seafoam down the crankcase, then hook a drill up to the oil pump and prime that engine about a dozen times or so in the hopes it'll work its way down all the bearings ... have you ever tried this? If you can get lubrication down the rods, mains and cam bearings, the only real thing you'll fight are sticky rings. An oil pressure gauge on the far end of the system is usually a good way to know if you're making any headway while priming. Just a thought. I haven't done these in a while.

One thing I learned from Halfass Kustoms (he plugs you quite a bit these days btw) - that idea of dumping the clutch in gear while someone pulls you seems to be a decent idea. THE REASON A 12-POINT BOLT MUST BE USED IS BECAUSE IT IS VERY TIGHT TOLERANCE, AND VERY DIFFICULT TO GET WRENCH TO TIGHTEN UP WITH FULL TURNS WHEN THE COUPLER IS INSTALLED ON CAR. HAVING THE 12-POINT BOLTS MAKES IT MUCH EASIER TO INSTALL.
