Repeating Rock/Metal Licks - Styles of Dave Murray, Kirk Hammett and Dave Mustaine
Play repeating rock guitar licks in the style of guitar greats like Dave Murray of Iron Maiden, Kirk Hammett of Metallica, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth and others. In this guitar lesson I'll show you how to play 5 repeating rock and metal licks so you can slip them into your guitar solos and kick your guitar soloing up a gear.
Here's a breakdown of this lesson:
0:15 Hear me solo using some of the repeating licks you're going to learn in this lesson. You might recognise some of them from the playing of metal guitar legends like Dave Murray, Dave Mustaine, Kirk Hammett, Dimebag Darrell, Kerry King and others!
1:02 All these repeating licks are in the key of E minor and use the E minor pentatonic scale and the E blues scale with a few other notes added in at times.
1:11 Repeating Rock/Metal Lick 1 - Dave Murray Style
Pretty much all the rock and metal guitar legends play repeating licks like this, Iron Maiden's Dave Murray is no exception. It'll sound great slipped into your rock solos! It uses a repeating bending phrase which Dave plays on the G and B strings. Notice how he changes the rhythm to alter the feel of the lick. Finally he ends it with a cool little E blues scale phrase.
4:06 Repeating Rock/ Metal Lick 2 - Dave Murray
This lick is similar to a lick Dave Murray plays in 'The Trooper'. It's using a cool little collection of notes which you can 'add onto' the E minor pentatonic scale to get higher up the neck. Dave Murray plays a 1 bar lick which he plays 3 times. Here I've added on the double stop bends section - another favourite Murray device showing his Jimi Hendrix influence!
8:23 Repeating Rock/ Metal Lick 3 - Kirk Hammett Style
This repeating lick is from the playing of Kirk Hammett. Check out his solos in 'Fade To Black' and 'Enter Sandman' to hear him play some ideas like this. The first part of the lick is from the E minor pentatonic scale and uses some of Kirk's favourite bending moves. He then uses some ascending patterns to climb up the guitar neck. Get the pull off patterns in time and clear here and watch you are 'rolling' your first finger to seperate out the notes and keep them clean.
13:03 Repeating Rock/ Metal Lick 4 - Kirk Hammett
Listen to 'Master of Puppets' to hear Kirk play a lick like this!
It's using some triplet pull off patterns from the minor pentatonic scale plus an added note at the 13th fret B string. The lick then moves into a fast tremolo picked line which descends the neck before ending on a bend. Watch your picking hand is loose, relaxed and near the strings as you tremolo pick. This will help you get it up to speed with a bit of practice.
16:20 Repeating Rock/ Metal Lick 5 - Dave Mustaine
This repeating lick is like something Mustaine plays in 'Holy Wars'.
It's simply a repeating pentatonic pattern which is repeated and moved up in 1 fret intervals as it's played. Even though some of the notes might sound a little 'out', the lick creates an exciting 'climbing' sound which resolves on the final bend.
Persevere with the stretch here - it might take a little practice if you haven't played a lick like this before. Copy the fingering I use in the lesson - it works well! Видеоклипы
this is adrian smith... are not dave murray..
Bravo
The first lick is also used in run to the hills solo played by Murray

Great video man! I've been trying to get my ass in gear with much more practice and less noodling. I'm having a blast with these!
+Nick in the States That's awesome Nick - thanks for your encouraging words and good luck with your practice! You know Nick, you might be able to help me out by answering a really simple question. What's been the main problem with most lick books/DVD's you've used in the past? Like, poor explanations, licks way too hard, whatever? It'll just help me make my stuff as good as I can. Hope you don't mind me asking Nick! Cheers and looking forward to your next video! James

That first lick I've been playing for months and no matter in which song, if I play it long I get tendonitis for days
I heard some noise is coming when u start to pick.. That happens to me too. How can i get rid of that noise?
Hi there! You're always going to get a little noise from an electric guitar with distortion, the trick is to use muting to keep it to a minimum. So left and right hand muting will handle this. If you mean the scratching noise you get from the pick striking the string...then I don't think you can get rid of it. Even awesome pickers like Paul Gilbert and Malmsteen get some amount of this noise. Hope that's helpful in some way. If you like my lessons then check out my website jamesshipwayguitar.com for more and www.totalguitarlab.com/ for my premium lessons! Hope to see you there sometime. Cheers and good luck with the picking! James
hey man! wasnt expecting to find your comment on the 'George lynch destroying the guitar' video! awesome page and videos man! how about doing some lynch style licks?
+Lathaniel Collins Hi Lathaniel... yeah, wasn't expecting to bump into you out here in cyberspace either! Hope all is going well for you man - wherever you're studying or playing these days. Thanks for your encouragement about my videos - sure you'll recognise some of it from your days at the Academy! As for the Lynch licks...yeah, thinking maybe an 80's Guitar Legends video or something, George, Jake E Lee, Van Halen - could be a cool idea. Will give it some thought. Take care man and catch you later. ; )
+James Shipway Guitar Yeah things are good .. doing the degree course at the academy .. going into the second year in october..are you teaching at the academy still? ... Yeah the 80s george lynch/ warren demartini and van halen thing i think would be popular.. If you wanted to i have a george lynch vintage bengal tiger guitar ( up pointing headstock, singlecoil and humbucker and floyd type thing ) you could use for a vid if you wanted .. VERY 80s haha . good chatting with you man !
I enjoy your lessons...
anyway you could do some ace frehley licks? there's not much out there for him maybe you could do a KISS video. Bruce kulick was no slouch either
Hi there. Thanks for your comment. You know Ace might be a good guy to check out. I've got some more rock lick vids planned soon so will get a few of his licks in there. Thanks for watching. James
+James Shipway Guitar Well many greats like John 5 and many others list him as a influence. KISS alive I or II is a lot of many guitarists first records
+Heretic Da Vinci I'll check out those recordings for some cool licks. Cheers. j
+James Shipway Guitar thanks man
Loving your videos! What gauge strings do you use?
Hey there...thanks for letting me know my lessons are helping you out! I use 10-52 gauge strings on all my guitars, normally d'addario brand. Find they're easy to bend but still have a punchy bottom end. If you like my lessons then check out my website jamesshipwayguitar.com for more and www.totalguitarlab.com/ for my premium lessons! Hope to see you there sometime. Cheers! James
translation......9s lol
@@jefferylord3068 Yeah, I think it's 9s too. 10s are too rigid for those bends
JAMES. YOU ARE SICK. PEACE. JAMES.
Ha...thanks for watching James and glad you enjoyed the lesson. Hope these licks are useful to you! If you enjoy my lessons then take a look at my website and free online guitar community at jamesshipwayguitar.com Lots more cool stuff there. Hope to maybe see you there sometime! Thanks again for watching, James ;-)
What are the amp settings? Drive / gain?
Hi there. Not sure...quite an old video. But bass and treble about 7, mid about 4, gain about 7 on that bugera amp I used for that one. Any higher gain sound should get you close. Good luck!
@@JamesShipwayGuitar I'm asking not because I will try to get the same tone, I have seen some people playing with lots of gain and poor technique.
Sounds more like Adrian Smith rather than Dave Murray. Nice video though!
+iluvkochikame Thanks for watching. The Maiden licks are based on Dave's solo from 'The Trooper'...at least I thought it was Dave! Maybe not...Cheers! J
+James Shipway Guitar They were Adrian's solo, although the first lick is something Dave does more often than Adrian, but in other solos
this reminds me more of adrian smith than dave murray.
Yep...you're not the first to say that. I think I maybe picked the wrong lick....
murray doesnt play like that, its adrian's
comic sans.... :P great stuff tho
Sorry men but that style is Adrian Smit. Good video
Yep... you're not the first to tell me that! Guess i got the wrong part of the solo! Anyway, thanks for watching. Cheers! James
To all you young musicians, pick bits and pieces, but don't try to "sound like" anyone else. PLEASE!
great lesson. but you lied about the free tabs. unforgivable
Hi tere! Not sure what you mean...just checked it and working fine. Was there a problem? Let me know! James
Can i say i love u ?
I always thought Dave Mustaine had a bad taste in notes or just plays anything that he can play fast without listening to what he's playing, idk...
