- back again with another movie review. in a year of terrible reboots and remakes the witches (2020) is a breath of fresh air. it isn't a perfect film but it's still loads of fun and most importantly, scary, at least for its target demographic. what did you think of the witches remake?

let me just make this clear: i don’t think either version is better than the other, they’re incredibly different and most importantly, are made for two entirely different generations of children. if you showed a kid today both movies for the first time i don’t doubt that the 1990 version would scare them more (i maintain that the prosthetics were more impressive than the CGI), but the 2020 version is the one they’d probably watch more.
Hey modern gurls i was wondering if you would ever consider doing a video about 70 style and how it took influence of native american styles and why it did that. Or maybe the celebrities who popularized it like cher?
i did like the new one, it was an interesting take, but the OG is an OG for a reason. will always love the witches

I absolutely love your intelligent and insightful cultural perspectives on movies/art/fashion, etc, but I can't find your name anywhere and the MG insta is mostly just pictures of skinny girls in cool outfits... @bitterboi31 She's now an adult and decide not to read the books for children and at the same time she didn't read those books when she was just a kid beacause at that time those books were too expensive for her. What's wrong about all that? Or you just addicted to lecturing people?
The accent is actually straight out of the book. Those who read the book as children know that Anne perfectly encapsulated the vocal quality of the Grand High Witch, with the v's instead of w's, rolled r's, and metallic rasp underneath. It's not really supposed to sound like any region. It's supposed to sound unhuman. I personally loved it.
dude, just based on those two scenes, she sounded russian, and within the meeting german and it sounded horrible, the inhuman part wasn't really executed imo.
@@HatsumomoKuroi Her accent sounded like a poor, cartoonish, and stereotypical impersonation of how a Russian person sounds like. Which is just a pity...
yeah i think it makes sense, especially in the context of the book
Yes, the accent being a German/Russian hybrid sounds spot on to me. Currently reading this book w/a student, and it’s one of his favorite parts 😆
@@fullpow2721 EXACTLY! In the book her accent states it sounds foreign & ridiculous. Her accent is supposed to sound ridiculous in a endearing and creepy way, as if it’s supposed to fit the character. That accent did not sound ridiculous like it was supposed to fit the character, it just sounded plain old stupid, silly, and unnatural.
"Scholastic bookfairs i was too poor to enjoy " relatable
We didn’t get scholastic book fairs, just the scholastic book catalogues.
I was still to poor to enjoy them though.
This now makes me want to reach through my phone screen and hug you both, just like I wanted to with the channel’s owner! @@ravenestrella2310 Omg, same. That book fair is one of the major reasons I became a bookworm 😂 And I remember crying because I lost the money I was going to use to buy a book.
Oh my gosh, memories.
I used to go to an awful school as a kid where they wouldn't even let kids in the room if they didn't have enough money. They'd stop kids at the front door and tell them to "show me the money", literally! If they didn't have any or didn't have enough to really buy anything, they weren't allowed in.
Of course, me having bupkiss because I was from Detroit in the 90s-2000s, I had to lie. Every year, I would try a new one. My favorite was the time I said "Well, I found some buried treasure outside, but it's too big to lug up and show you. You'll have to go outside and get it when I'm done."
Not all of them worked obviously, but a few did. Usually I would borrow half the money from the kid behind me, and give it back to them once we both got through. They would be okay with it because I always kept my word; I never stole from them. I had integrity - I only stole the books!

I thought this version was decent but I prefer the 1990s version. Maybe it’s nostalgia but the big reveal when they took their disguises off still creep me out to this day.
That was a great scene. So creepy. So strange. So intriguing.
Yeah because it didn’t happen in 2 seconds from the back of the room (spoilers I guess?)
More CGI in this one, instead of practical effects and makeup, but I feel like it was appropriately used overall.
@@leilaniz5909 oh yea, I remember that now from the book I read as a kid. I remember bein totally intrigued by the book and couldn’t stop turning
I still remember the tight chest, gay panic and awe when I used to watch that scene as a kid. Who said the grand high witch could dress so well. Why was she still sexy ripping off her face. When will the scene end I'm scared.
Roald Dahl’s book gave me nightmares for years.
At least BFG wasn't scary🥺🥺
Likewise, I read it when I was very young, and it didn't HALF give me the creeps! 😱

I think it even mentioned how short time mouses live (and I am confused why Moderngirz refers it as a choice to stay as a mouse, I guess it is in the movie?).
Same! I couldn't even read past chapter 3
For the fashion aspect I think it's worth arguing that the south, even today, moves a lot slower in terms of fashion evolution, and like you mentioned many people in the south were poor so that could account for the fashion discontinuity.
Actually plus back then fashion was slower in general
Yes, and over all it is always the younger generation that addopts the fashion faster, then the generation the brittish kid’s mother was part of. Older Ladies tend to dress more in fashion that was worn in their youth.
This is true. As a Southerner trends literally don’t get here until years after they hit mainstream, especially in schools with poorer kids. Hell even the rich kids are a bit behind on trends sometimes too (tho this is being remedied with TikTok ime).
And the British mother may have been wealthy but she was English, not Continental or Californian. Her tasteful but understated outfits suited her position.
I just LOVE the way the 90's version was shot. The cinematography was so creative and didn't rely on CGI like the remake.
But maybe is because at 90's the CGI wasn't good, even being the best they got at that time

In the book, Luke decides to stay a mouse so he won't outlive his grandmother. I didn't like how they changed that ending in the original movie, but I think they did it because test audiences wanted a happier ending.
That’s kinda haunting ._.
It is sad when someone who is younger than you dies first.
@@takayanagi-senseissurprise2104 Sad, but it does happen.
That aspect of the book always upset me. Its treated as a positive but thinking about a little boy having his life cut short by outside forces is still very depressing
@@amberwingtundrawing776 If you've ever read real fairy tales, they are extremely dark. The original Little Mermaid is so sad.
The new movie actually stuck with the book ending in which the boy stays a mouse, I liked that. I also liked how they added this idea of the witches preying on kids "no one would look for", poor black kids. Race informed the characters’ experience but it still remained a fun fantasy adaptation of one of my favourite books growing up.
Yes even though Roal Dahl was a racist and would hate the new grandma and boy he would have liked the new ones ending
@@EternalPayne we now know that Dahl had tried to make some of his characters poc. But, his publisher forced the change to make the books more profitable. For example his widow recently revealed that Charlie was meant to be black and was a commentary on racism and white privilege. So he probably wouldn’t have cared about the race change.
You do realize that plenty of people in the world are poor and aren't black right. Even in the 60s. Also in the book the witches didn't give a shit about race, they hated kids in general.
@@welch_inc6532 how do you know that? I am just wondering, where I can read about that :)

I know Roald Dahl hated the 1990 film, the Witches because they change his ending(in the original ending in the book where the boy stayed as a mouse forever), but he did like Anjelica Huston's performances of the Grand High Witch.
as someone who grew up with the 90's ver. i can say, the ending didnt diminish how good it was. the irony is, them keeping the original ending in this version actually hurts the movie, since it doesnt fit. the characters treat it as a fun ride. as opposed to the cursed existance that they will have to live from now on.
i could even say the 90's ending fits this version more because of how "every thing is fun" aprouch they went with.
@@marcosdheleno Maybe they should just swap endings.
@@MissCaraMint the filmed the original ending on the first movie, but the reaction was pretty negative, so they changed it.

Aw thats lame they didnt. But a lot of people said that scared the heck out of them as a kid so maybe they thought it would be too scary for modern audiences (and maybe thats why they show the little girl changing into a mouse instead?)

i still prefer the 1990s version tho. The CGI was just too distracting.
the grand high witch's accent is written as having very peculiar quirks, but I agree that Anne had some trouble pulling it off
Wow. They actually did Roald Dahl's original ending.
Unfortunately no...
Correct me if i'm wrong but in the book they go hunting for the witches themselves... but in this remake they actually send kids to deal with the witches.
I made a video about this movie if you want to check it out.
@@KeyholeDweller Very late response here, but if im not wrong I believe the collage of photos of the grandma and the mice prior to the scene where luke sent the children off to fight witches implied that the grandma and the mice had travelled across america to kill witches. also, iirc, grandma and the mice had killed every witch in america, and since both of them were about to die, they sent the kids to kill witches internationally.
@@carmanoor1014 yes they did hunt the witches, however passing on the torch to kids seems to fly in the face of their goal.
But my point is... they still didn't follow the book ending.
too bad they trashed the rest
11:15 honestly, her accent being everywhere and her being cartoonish, to me, works. She IS cartoonish, and that seems to help cut the horror element for the kiddos. Kids like being scared, but this book goes full hog in some areas (the painting, their look, the stranger danger, the sniffing, etc. you need some breaks, and they used comedy)
Still commenting because this movie was great and I’m so glad you made a video about it!
the problem is, this version does not have any ounce of the horror element the 90's version had. everything is treated more like a joke, or a fun ride. even the ending, it doesnt fit the book. its not biter sweet, on the contrary, they treat it as if they are better like that.
@@marcosdheleno to a kid though this would still be scary imo. it’s not scary for us cause we’re adults, and also we can compare it’s scariness to the original, but if i was a kid and just seeing this version and can say for a fact that i would legitimately be terrified. kids can’t tell the difference between cgi and live action when it’s in the same movie, and it’s probably important to remember this is meant to scare kids, not necessarily adults
Anjelica Huston will always be the best Grand High Witch ever in the movie, The Witches. I always thought her version was more realistic, iconic, and scary.
Yes I totally enjoyed her performance as GHW 😍
Amen.
Re- the outfits: it’s not like everybody adhered to the same fashion at the same time. Those were older women who maybe were still wearing clothes from her days... and it’s also Alabama. I don’t remember hippies in Alabama haha
I agree with this. I think Mad Men is the best example of 1960s fashions (especially since the series spans the whole decade and even though it primarily focuses on high earning Madison Ave execs, there’s still a range of various income levels and ages) because it shows how at a certain point, very few people keep up with trends and most just settle into what looks good on them, even if it’s not in style.
Think about our own personal closets. We all probably have items that are 5-10 years old so while we buy some new pieces that reflect current styles, not everyone looks like they stepped out of fashion magazine or the New Arrivals section of Madewell.
The CGI spoiled the movie. Why can't they just use practical effects, like it's understandable if you use CGI for explosions and full CGI characters, the CGI isn't even great in this movie also.
How would they do the mouths with practical effects, tho? 🤨
@@WarlockGazor simple, plastic surgery!

Personally I like the sillier more colorful tone, I’m a coward and sometimes I just want to see the Halloween/witchy aesthetics without being unsettled. Like I only watched the original once or twice as a kid because I would be absolutely terrified, but I would watch twitches and Halloweentown every single Halloween. But again, that’s just me being a coward
It’s a very Dahl choice. His worlds are filled brightness that hides the darkness
that's valid! I don't think you're a coward at all, and this is coming from someone who preferred the other. this one seems like a ton of fun and I'm glad you were able to enjoy this one!
The 90s movie I could understand because it was the 90s, but I'm actually surprised this new one got greenlit by producers because it's actually terrifying for children (esp. with the added cruelty of keeping them as animals forever... I feel like parents would hate that lol)
the chicken will live in my mind forever 😭
I actually enjoyed this version as well except I wished they fleshed out the witches character a bit more ie had more interactions among them. It was hard to tell Anne hathaway was the grand high witch except for the fact she was always in the front. Also I feel the original version really manifested the witches hatred for children a bit better.
I was extremely disappointed. It felt like a hyper-camp Halloween tv special of Everybody Hates Chris for little children rather than a movie the whole family could enjoy. The movie was super rushed, the screenplay was poorly written and left so many holes. The dialogue was very dumbed down and exaggerated (again for little children only) and the overload of CGI effects ruined it for me. I love Anne Hathaway and some of the fashion specifically her first look in the lobby. But then some of her looks made her look like a goth Martha Washington on her way to a costume party, which doesn't make sense if the witches are trying to blend in to 1960's society...

I think iam tired of Aphrodism in movie why can’t the witch be ugly , why nobody can’t be ugly in movies nowadays even in biopic.
I mean if I was a witch I'd make myself look beautiful too
For real, I hated they didn't make Anne look ugly like in the original movie adaptation, she looks like a blonde Pennywise.
Witches are supposed to disguised as beautiful humans to lure their victims and not be blamed for certain things pretty privilege it’s part of their trickery and you can not say all movies cast only attractive people because a person’s attractiveness is suggestive you probably felt that none of the witches in the movie were ugly and I disagree I felt like some of them weren’t pretty at all🤷🏾♀️ so the claim you’re making is invalid
@@majayyyyy7882 Good points, however, I think they meant how in the original, when the witches take off their disguises, they look a LOT uglier and creepier than when they take off their disguises in this remake. I don’t think the commenter is referring to the actors themselves, cuz the original movie had good-looking actors, too. They are referring to the design choice to make them less ugly when they take off their human “masks” in the movie and show their true selves.
They might have changed the design to downplay Dahl's antisemitic beliefs.
Honestly I was ready to hate this movie but was surprisingly enjoying it up until Anne Hathaway appeared as the grand high witch. I thought she was horrible. Some people are saying they loved her and she made the movie for them so I guess its created a variety of different opinions
I enjoy the accent, honestly. I think it’s an interesting character choice bc it is so obviously like 5 accents mixed into one bizarre thing, which feels accurate for this super witch that has lived a very long time and thus has probably had to live in several different countries to hide her identity. The constant assimilation resulting in a very odd mixed European accent feels fitting to me.
@@hkazu63 The wild accent and the bits about the hotel manager not understanding it, are part of the orignal book if I remember right! I hope that... it wasn't a subtle racist thing on Dahl's part 🙈
I like her in the movie but the accent sounds of kind fake sometimes
Her accent was bad, but it was funny.😂😂
I'm not gonna lie, while I wholeheartedly believe that Roald Dahl was racist and anti-semitic (no matter how heartbreaking it is to my childhood), the article you linked seems very... reaching. Reading through it the links are very ridiculous to the point where the article is like "the witches meet every year to talk about secret evil doings and this is antisemitic because a popular antisemitic text views jews as conspirators of the state"
that its not much of a reach considering the witches in the 90s movie have these exaggerated hooked noses and body hair and also , wear wigs, which is a very common practice within jewish women especially in the 60s, to portray a gathering of grotesque witches planning on torturing children WITH these specific features really is fueled by antisemitic caricatures of jewish women n antisemitic propaganda in general ya know?
@@poobit_pespillo it’s interesting to note, though, that the hooked nose AND body hair were not present in dahl’s original book. In the book he says that witches have no hair whatsoever, and the only detail concerning witches’ noses is that the nostrils are formed differently to better smell-out children. The grand high witch herself is even illustrated MISSING her nose, with a gaping nasal cavity akin to that of a rotted corpse. On top of it all, the book also states that witches aren’t even women or humans, but rather monsters that take on a female shape as part of their disguise to beguile and fool a child into a false sense of security. The details you’ve pointed out about the hooked nose and body hair were not penned by Dahl, most likely instead being invented by Jim Henson and/or his creative staff who were responsible for the special effects in the 1990 film.
About him being racist in general, I once read that he wanted to make Charlie (from the chocolate factory) and his family black, but his editor or publisher wouldn’t let him? Idk I’m not well versed on the subject it’s just something I heard lol
@@Hwilki that really makes the 90s movie suck ass tbh , considering jim henson n other creatives could have made super inventive designs for the witches instead of. well, THAT.

Im sorry but Anne can not pull of an accent to save her life.
Part of me wants to defend it because they seem to be going for a storybook vibe. Dick Van Dyke's cockney accent was famously bad in Mary Poppins but it never bothered me because it was so stylized. That witch voice is extremely unpleasant to listen to though...
Yeah, ikr? That accent really doesn't sound like anything I know.
That's the point tho, we know in this film that witches have horrible rusty voices which they use accents to cover, i feel like the horrible accents are intentional.
anne hathaway to me always presented doe-eyed and ordinary as far as features go. perhaps her performance won the casting directors over, but as you said, the special effects seem to carry her throughout. I haven't seen it, but from the looks of it, idk...
Right! The original actress was perfect. Intimidating and cold looking without the need for special effects.

@@TheGareth87 Ohhh Tilda Swinton would have been a good choice
I went in super pessimistic, but it outdid my expectations, it was really cute. Never as good as the original, but it was fun.
One correction- the original novel and 1st film are set in England. Only the very beginning is in Norway (where the grandmother is from).
My favorite remake of all time I feel like will always be Cinderella (2015). The story was much more rich, the visuals and costume design was GORGEOUS and the character of Cinderella is much more real and raw. I love the contrast of the Step-Mother and Ella being parallels to each others grief and loss. Ella chose to heal from her loss and keep moving forward with kindness, while the stepmother chose to take a bitter and resentful outlook towards the world.
It really was gorgeous. I think that the multiple adaptions of the story actually helped with that. They HAD to get creative and do all that work to make it stand out from the rest. Also it came out at the very start of this trend so people still cared.
To me , the 2015 Cinderella has nothing to do with the 1950 movie And is more an adaptation of the tale than an adaptation of the 1950 movie. Both Cinderella's are entierely two difeérent characters. And this nor a good or a Bad thing
I love the Angelica Houston version, the movie still gives me chills while I watch it and the part were they are telling the story of the girl in the paint scares me a lot.
I'm so confused 😕 why would they change the setting from Norway to Alabama??? I know you can never completely stay true to the books but this just seems geared for the American Market tbh.
It does seem like that. Might be because Zemeckis as a director feels more comfortable with American settings; I only know him for stories set in the US. Or it fits the inclusion of racial inequality as a factor for child targeting by witches since the American South is historically known for that type of inequality. Or laziness?
I don’t see why that’s a problem. The story is still practically the same
I think it also is to make sure that the movie can further distance itself from problematic elements of the original book (most notably accusations of sexism and antisemitism).
I was thinking the same. in the original story it is in Norway and in England. I don't understand why they had to put the story in the USA.
@@stargirlsmagicaltale3150 it was dumb changing the setting to the U.S.

It was pretty entertaining for me personally, and if a movie can make my little brother believe that every woman he sees wearing gloves is a witch then I say job well done!
My favorite change was that his friend to live with him instead of them leaving them with his parents because I always hated them. They were kind of abusive.
Also they probably had to do a lot of narration because Cris Rock costs too much to only be used for two scenes
Oh, interesting, I didn't even know of the old film adaptation! I read the book as a child (I was maybe 7 at the time) and I remember it being VERY scary. I actually started singing/whistling every time I went to the bathroom, so my family would notice if it were to suddenly stop because I was snatched away by a witch ^^'. I don't remember at what point I stopped doing that, but I know I did it for years lol.
This is such an adorable story
Practical effects will ALWAYS win for me. Also, Chris Rock’s voice was distracting
At first I thought to myself, why is the accent constantly changing. However, Grandma did say that legend has it that she came from Norway. So the Grand High Witch is probably really old and been all over the world. Which kind of makes sense that her accent isn't from just 1 place. I think Anne did a great job, but the Stand out was Octavia and Jahzir.
A someone from Norway. The regional accents in themselves are very varied and distinct. We have several types of "r" pronounsiations depending on where you are from. If you lived in all the major cities and picked up a bit of each dialect you would end up with a giant mess. And then going over to English would just muddle things even further. Not to mention where els in the world she's been.
here's an example of Norwegians with different dialects speaking Norwegian.

Thats a good theory, I never thought of that
I personally feel that the actress who played Bellatrix Lestrange in Harry potter would have portrayed the main witch better but looking forward to Anna hathway's acting
yes!! helena bonham carter would have been such a good grand high witch
I saw another comment who thought Eva Green would also be a better choice
I watched the version with Angelica Huston, aged about 8 or 9 and was terrified by it, even though I read the book!
gues i was accidentally early? honestly i didnt even know it was out
THANK YOU!!! It’s so refreshing to see a review that compares the pros and cons of both the 1990 and the 2020 films, instead of blindly putting the original on a pedestal while bashing the remake. Neither films are perfect in my eyes (the book will always come first to me) however I enjoyed the new film enough to have already seen it three times over the course of the past two days with different people in my social distance bubble. Anyway, thank you for bringing an unbiased and impartial stance to this review!
That and a little princess ❤️
You watched this shit three times? wow...
The best comment I’ve red on this movie until
Now. Thank you.
Yayyyy my favourite RUclips uploaded again! I love your channel and your content 💗💗
I LOVED Roald Dahl's books when I was younger but I remember reading The Witches and I got so terrified I couldn't read it past the part where the witches find the boy hiding. I think I'm still scarred.
"did i STUTTUR?" YDEGQUKCLLBQIL BYE-
I liked the Flim, the visual effects (especially the mice scenes) were improved since with the growth of technology, they made them look better. I feel like they could’ve make Anne Hathaways character of the grand high witch look more scary, intimidating, kinda like the 1990 version with Angelica Huston.
Ugh that clip in the remake with the boy bubbling up seriously trips my phobia... Wish they'd put a trigger warner on the trailer, it drives me crazy
I remember watching the original as a kid and it was so scary, I had nightmares for like a week😂
I saw the original when I was about 6 years old, and it scared the hell out of me. I’m 27 now, and from the few clips I’ve seen of the remake, I’m not ashamed to admit some moments genuinely freaked me out. I wouldn’t say they’re nightmare-inducing, but I still found them scary all the same.
I thought the witches black cat was gonna end up being her niece and she was gonna be the one that turned them back into humans but i was wrong.
The original book ends with them not being turned back. I don't believe the niece was an actually character in the book either. Will have to reread, but i'm pretty sure ALL witches are evil.
I actually liked Anne Hathaway’s scary grin CGI and love her as an actress, but she definitely was the weakest link. I think the new movie was overall better, but the ballroom, dinner, and all of Angelica Huston’s moments from the original were superior. Octavia Spencer was fantastic in this version though!
I love how the spoilers bit matched the video hahaha. I swear to god you’re my favourite youtube channel.
I recently watched the original for the first time and I have to say the use of real life mice was really disturbing to me, there’s scenes of them falling, being thrown and having stuff tied to their tails while they try to run. I gave it a low rating and was personally very disturbed, I felt so bad for the little guys. I’ll take any fake looking toy or animated mice over that mistreatment... wonder if there’s anyone else who remembers noticing this?
The whole animal cruelty aspect is the same reason why we are starting to see mostly CG animals of all forms on all films. Even cats and dogs.
that's horrible!! i personally haven't watched the 90s version and any form of animal mistreatment scares me so ill prolly take a pass now :
They weren't real mice, from what I remember. They were real in that they weren't CGI, but they weren't actual, living mice.
@@breadfan_85 they had like “toy/puppet mice” when they needed to “talk” or be shown doing a specific thing, but half the time they were filming real, living, breathing mice of the same colour, just rewatch some clips on RUclips
Ooo, please shut up!!What do you think mice do otherwise???They just sleep in a hole or sing serenade?Mices are animals that spend most of the time looking for food and while they looking for fud, they climb, hanging and cross obstacles just like in the movie.Stop with those animal rights crap while at the same time you probably chewing a burger!!
I just don’t think Anne was a great choice for the role, nothing about her seems menacing and know she’s obviously an actor but it seems like she was chosen more bc she’s a big name and not because she suits the role
Yeah, I was very surprised by the casting.. She also seems kinda young to be the global leader of the witches..? I know they can change their appearance, but I didn't think the unmasked version was anywhere near as effective as in the 90s version. Also, Anjelica Huston is a queen! It's hard for me to think of anyone else topping her in the role, tbh
I thought the same...I think Anne is too pretty (especially conventionally pretty) while Angelica Houston isn't a conventionally pretty woman. she's very tall and quite broad. And they took the extra step by doing the horrifying prosthetics.
While with Anne I feel like she's still too pretty to be the grand high witch...I also feel Anne doesn't have the same menacing and intimidating presence Angelica had.
She wouldn't have been my first casting choice
@@devonmay5960 I think Anjelica is beautiful, but not the standard rom-com lead, she's statuesque and striking and that adds to her ability to seem imposing. I reckon I'd still be kinda intimidated by her if I met her now, IRL and not in character, let alone as a kid!
I can't really imagine being intimidated by Anne though
@@devonmay5960 In the book she was described as very pretty and her real face was rotten and ugly
This gives me hope for the remake. Their doing something different by adding different takes to the story and not just doing a scene by scene remake
At the start of the video I really like how the witches hat matches perfectly with your logo
I don't mind visual effects for animals because it means no animal cruelty.
damn the cgi really did make this movie 100x scarier
They really said uncanny valley but make it intentional❤️🥰✨
You are putting my exact thoughs into a 13 minute video, from beauty and the beast , to Emily in Paris to this one!!! Keep it going an THAAANKS
I love the effort you put into editing x
When i heard that they were doing a remake of "The Wicthes", i rolled my eyes. When i heard that Anne Hathaway was set to play the Grand High Witch, i immediately knew that it going to be a corny-ass CGI romp with generic charm. Seeing this video confirms everything.
Everybody’s talking about the CGI in the new movie, but I was mostly focused on the eYEBROWS they decided would be a good idea to slap onto the mice
Loved that you pointed out the trust relationship between both films. Totally agree with you that the 90s film version was a bit forced and sudden
One thing I do like about the Grand High Witch’s introduction outfit (I liked a lot of it but I’m with you it would have looked cool with pants it would show that she was in charge a bit more) is that the hat she wears is bigger than the other witches that wear hats setting her a part from them and giving the effect of her almost having a crown, which makes sense she is basically the queen of the witches. Something else I would have added is having her wear something that acts like that when she’s in her “human form,” like how when she’s in her room she has the turban. For scenes she’s mostly indoors it could be a hair accessory that she can pass off as an heirloom if someone notes it looks a little strange (even better she’s technically not lying, it could have been something that the last Grand High Witch gave her).
I like remakes when they are necessary. And this generation has a lack of horror for children material.
yay, i was waiting for your opinion on it ❤️❤️
the no garlic scene is me at my retail job when a customer doesn't speak loud enough
I love your movie reviews ☺️
“I was too poor to afford,” that comment hit different. Lol, me to sis, me to! 😩
I wish they toned down the witches accents, because i could barely understand what they were saying lol but i really liked the clothes and sets
I love how “The Witches” 2020 is more of a second adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic instead of a shot for shot remake of the 1990 adaptation.
I think Kristin voicing the older mouse was a good choice. She’s always had such a quirky voice which added quite a bit of charm to her character.
i love anne hathaway but whenever she has to have an accent in a movie it makes me cringe - see Becoming Jane
I thought Anne Hathaway was fantastic, honestly. She's truly an A+ actress.
Remember being so scared when I watched that... my childhood.
Tried to play the remove hair scene so many times lol
Did I get scared? No, I’m an adult and knew not to expect too much from this.
Were there some scenes that made me uncomfortable and slightly jump? Yes.
I enjoyed the movie and I knew the CGI wasn’t going to be that great (you could tell from the trailers) so it helped ease the disappointment and I focused more on the story and characters. The extra mouse girl I didn’t really care for, and I did wish they did a little more with changing Anne Hathaways look as the Grand High Witch. A little more scary than her just hovering above everyone.
“Only saw them at the scholastic book fair I was too poor to actually enjoy” omg I hated when they would bring each class down to look around the book fair to see what was there (taunting those who wouldn’t be able to buy books or the trinkets available)
Lmao I was just searching about this reboot about and the old movie while listening to the The Witches OST - Opening & Closing Credits soundtrack right now weird is it?. 😂.
When you said "The Scholastic book fairs I was too poor to enjoy" I felt so seen
When you talked about the accent, my mind immediately went to Jodie Comer's russian accent in Killing Eve. And legit, I just watched this movie for Anne Hathaway.
I like this version better overall, really good acting like you said and it's scarier overall
The new version.... sucked. The pacing is bad. The characters are extremely shallow. The special effects were terrible, seeming more like a cheap Alvin and the Chipmunks movie. Only Anne made it *kinda* worth it. Even the main character was terrible and shallow, no matter how much they tried to make a story for him.
Scholastic Book Fairs did remind of our destitution. I hear you, Ma’am!
Wow- I feel _so_ old; when you put up The Land Before Time poster- it was the very first movie I ever saw at the cinema!
the book and original movie hold such a special place in my heart, and i was so excited for this new version. i can see why people don't like reboots/remakes. sometimes it feels like a story you love so much has the chance of being tarnished, and many of them are obvious cash grabs as you said, but i'm very much pro reboot/remake because i like to think of it this way. here's this story that i adore, that i get to watch again but in a new way. this new witches movie didn't let me down in the slightest. anne hathaway's performance as the GHW is stellar, she's very obviously having the time of her life being the biggest ham she can be. her performance is so campy and fun, and while i don't think this GHW is as scary as anjelica houston's, i think she's still terrifying in her own right, especially that horrific elongated maw of razor sharp teeth. this movie was so much fun to watch
Yeah that's the thing I don't quite get. People are complaining it wasn't AS scary or that GHW wasn't Anjelica Huston, but it's a reinterpretation of the original not a shot for shot remake. Why would I want to watch something identical to the 90's version when that already exists?
I love the witch actually hahaha and when the part that anne hathaway nose haha
The protagonist's mouse is really cute
I watched it before bed last night, now this was in my recommended
