  • Trying an interesting alternative to our go-to Katadyn BeFree water filter. We like the BeFree's flow rate (when it's new and used in relatively clear water sources). We also like how the BeFree is easy to store in a pocket or sleeping quilt when temps start to dip below freezing. With the collapsible bottle attached, it packs small and we don't have to worry about water leaking into our pocket or quilt. The HydraPak Filter Cap seems to be similar to the BeFree but with a sturdier flip top cap (but it's cap is not really replaceable on trail).
We like the Sawyer Squeeze for dirty water sources, over-all reliability and longevity, but find the BeFree's flow rate so much faster that we would rather replace the BeFree multiple times than fight a slowed-down Sawyer Squeeze...especially when it's cold and every second squeezing water freezes our hands more.
This is an initial comparison of new BeFree and HydraPak filters...we'll see how they compare over time
    Website Specs Comparison:
    HydraPak Filter Cap:
    - .2 micron "hollow fiber"
    - filter life approx 1,500L
    Katadyn BeFree:
    - .1 micron "pore size"
    - filter life approx 1,000L
    Gravity Filtering Results:
    BeFree Total time: 3:40
    HydraPak Total time: 5:41

Well I’ve had and used both and I’ll tell you the hydrapak is twice as fast as the Befree

Can you do this w/ long term used ones? Even w/ vinegar or distilled water cleanings, the BeFree flow rates end up suffering for me (west coast w/ lots of glacier/snow run-off)
